Daryl Morey Doesn’t Believe Rockets Are Among League’s Top Three Teams

The Rockets have completely overhauled their roster over the last three seasons, but GM Daryl Morey still doesn’t believe they’re one of the League’s top few teams… yet. Appearing on a Houston radio station, Morey had this to say: “’I think there are probably at least three teams better than us if not more… Until you’re going into a season felling like you are the top one or two I think it’s, and we haven’t really accomplished anything, I think it’s hard to talk about ‘hey we’re one of the favorites to win the championship.’  But I do think we go in with a chance, where as we haven’t in the last few years… I think [Miami, San Antonio and OKC], I would say going in for sure are better than us, and they’ve definitely proven more. I think the Bulls and the Pacers they’re very good as well this year.  I am hoping we are in the mix with them, maybe equal quality.’”

    as he shouldn’t

  • LLC#12

Probably top 10 but no higher. On paper, last seasons Laker squad was better than this seasons Rockets, but the game isn’t played on paper…

    he is synch with reality

  • spit hot fiyah

    in synch

  • pposse

you would hope with all the money they just shelled out that they would have a top 10 team atleast. I say they should be in the top 7; i’m seriously debating on the 5 team league pass and electing to watch Houston games

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

a lot of Houston’s games will be on national TV. You should consider how many “league pass” games you’ll get out of each team you choose. You don’t want to choose a team that is on national TV for 25% of its games.

  • JibbsIsBallin

Wow a GM with some common sense thinking and speaking realistically.

  • Youngindy21

Real Top 3 teams = Miami, San Antonio, Indiana

The Rockets won’t be nearly as good as Indiana and unless Dwight Howard becomes a beast again, they won’t be as good as Chicago either.

  • pposse

yeah thats true, well then that probably knocks off every team i was going to get besides the Bulls.

I was thinking OKC, Miami, Houston and either Golden State or LA Lakers or NYK for that last spot. Now I’m going to have to rethink this.

i’m not trying to talk you out of it, i just want you to get the most out of your money.
    .
if i end up getting the 5 team package (probably won’t) — i think the teams i choose will be,

    —– Washington / New Orleans / Chicago / Golden State / Portland

    — i would try and grab teams from different divisions, and teams that won’t be on national TV every week… although, Chicago and Golden State are definitely not safe bets in the latter front.

they are not…. plain and simple

See? Nothing wrong with being realistic.

  • pposse

that was also very close to my next list. Im in DC so you know i’m getting Chicago regardless and that eliminates Washington as an option but I am interested in seeing how much better the Wiz can be with a full year from Wall and Beal and co.

New Orleans can come up big time this comng year it should be exciting to see what AD, Jru Holiday (always liked his game for whatever reason), Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans can do, and Steph Curry is pretty damn entertaining. Portland is the only team thats not appealing out of your list for me.

I still want to get Miami cause that team has been getting better and better, this team imo has a legit shot at breaking some records this year.

i enjoy Portland because their games are always competitive. No matter how good/bad their opponent is. I also am excited about CJ McCollum out there. I think he has a real shot to be the ROY. I also want to see if Damian Lillard has any room to grow as a player, he seems pretty close to max’d out to me.

5 team League Pass? Is that new?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the e-mail the league sent out was very confusing. it included the full-league pass price, but stated that people get to choose 5 teams.

SO it seems like there will be multiple options this season. Last year they released a League Pass Press Release that had a bunch of mistakes on it too.

  • Dfrance

Its funny everyone saying he’s being realistic, but had he said they were top 3, everyone would say “What’s he supposed to say?”

  • jbp

dude Houston is a top 3

  • Dfrance

Sounds intriguing. I still think there is more than enough free basketball on TV for me, but that’d be a nice reduced price option.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange has a saying for moments like these, “Underpromise and overdeliver.”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah, if it’s like $75 for 5 teams all season, i really might consider it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh well, thanks for saying so. That helps a bunch.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s a little different with a GM isn’t it? imo it is. maybe i’m off base though

  • Dfrance

I can see the NBA making it something silly like $125 in hopes people just say eff it and pay full price since its “only a few more dollars”

  • Dfrance

I see it as the same way a player believes in himself, a GM is supposed to believe in the team he helped create. As delusional as that belief may be.

  • pposse

    https://account.nba.com/leaguepass/broadband/

$130 for 5 teams or $190 for all teams. you was pretty much spot on

  • Dfrance

Smh. People that want LP are gonna pay the $190 anyway. If they want to attract the customer like me who says “I ain’t paying $190 for a bunch of games I’m not gonna watch” they can’t charge $130. That’s just greedy.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, i think the GM is the one guy who should always be realistic. Maybe not admit it, as i think you are implying the psychological detriment of saying you aren’t good enough has a negative effect on the players.

But the GM should always know where his team has weak points, and he should always be planning to better the situation.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

no sh*t. i am just going to go without league pass again for the 2nd year in a row. Raising the prices every year is not something i’m ever going to support.
    -
plus, you can just buy a synergy account and watch every play of every game the next day.

  • pposse

i’m looking at it from the perspective of it’ll cost me $130 to see all the Bulls games – since im not in Chicago it makes more sense to just pay that then go to these bars/restaurants locally to watch the games, and more than likely drop $130 after watching one or two games.

I believe thats the demographic that LP is going after with this option; and if thats the case giving me 4 other teams to follow for leisure purposes is added incentive.

  • Dfrance

I hear you, I actually like the response. I just feel that he could have went either way with it and gotten support. But I guess that goes for any statement like this.

  • Dfrance

Well let me not sound like there is no value to LP, I definitely think it can be worth the money if you know you’re gonna watch the games.

I just know for someone like me, who wants the option there when I want to watch a game, but won’t actually make time to watch the games, $130 would be a little too much.

  • retrobat

Hey so one of my main gripes is that LP only seems to have one HD channel, at least where I’m from (San Diego). I have cox so I’m wondering if anyone else has more than one LP HD channel…or am I just missing something?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

Be aware that if you get LP broadband through NBA.com they will automatically re-up you, with the cc on file, before the season even starts. Not cool.

  • pposse

yeah thats bs when they do that..if that happens to you you can just call your cc company and say it was not authorized, they should be able to take it off for you right away

  • bike

The best all-around response to these type questions is ‘I think we are capable of doing something very special this season’. It’s positive, ambiguous, and vague.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

That happened a few yrs ago but I kept it anyway. Last yr I got it thru the cable company. They will let you spread out the payments. For me it’s worth it since I don’t watch anything else on tv. My kids will never forgive me if I cut the cable once and for all but I’m very tempted. Last yr the 5 team broadbent plan was just too hard to narrow down and with the cable plan you get all teams + on broadband. Heaven!

  • straight cake

    lol smh

  • Rig Veda

i think you will work extra hard if you have some confident and not too much confident.

That Synergy Account is something I’m probably gonna get

  • grgeblck

    being humble is great.

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Yeah exactly….mind you I bet it wasn’t a phrase he said to Dwight to draw him to Houston in the first instance, “Hi Dwight sure come to Texas we want you here… but we still wont be top 3…we probably arent even the best team in Texas with you hut come anyway!!!”

  • robb

    smart guy

  • Jone

if you plan on howard getting you to the promise land then you are in a for a loooong season.
