Doc Rivers Says The Lakers Are ‘The Best Franchise in Sports History’

Doc Rivers will spend the upcoming season coaching the L.A. Clippers, but he has no lack of respect for the organization that his team shares a building with, as he went as far as to call the Lakers the best franchise in all of sports history. Do you agree? Per Yahoo!: “Over lunch in a Century City restaurant last week, Rivers considered the irony of it all and laughed. For weeks after the trade in 1991, Rivers refused to speak with Clippers president Andy Roeser. He played a season and moved on to the New York Knicks. All these years later, Roeser had come recruiting Rivers again. This time, everything had changed. The franchise’s commitment had transformed, and the Clippers were offering Rivers the power, pay, personnel and locale to chase championships. ‘The risk is all mine,’ Rivers, 51, said. ‘To go to an organization that hasn’t won but [two] playoff series in their entire history, in a town where the other team is the best franchise in sports history – that’s risk. But the opportunity – for me – gives me life. If we get this right, it will be the story of stories to tell. At this point in my life, the gamble is worth it.’”

The most important word in that statement is “history”.

    Yankees

In the vein of regurgitating random facts that lead to nowhere … Lola Falana, Jayne Kennedy and Pam Grier are three of the finest women in history.

The lakers are for sure top 3 all time….I know the yanks also in the conversation. The lakers don’t go 25 years through title droughts, they have only missed the playoffs twice since 76′ and 5x in league history. Over the last 30 years, I would agree with doc on this one.

  • berkamore

Well, the Lakers’ winning formula was based on two things, a genius owner and a big checkbook. Now, the genius owner is no more (and no system seems to have been put in place to capture and replicate his once in a generation skills) and I am willing to bet that they are going to become just like the Knicks. (a lot of dough, championship expectations but ultimately no cigar). To quote the great Walter Sobchak, “they are entering a world of pain”, they won’t get anywhere the NBA finals for the next decade at least. Mark my words.

I disagree…people tend to forget mitch kupchak has traded for chris paul (nixed), dwight and nash all within 1 1/2, while also trading for gasol in 08′…was doctor alive then, yes, but the lakers have been mainly operated by the buss’ offspring. The lakers have virtually NO one signee past this upcoming season. 2014,2015 & 2016 have q bevy of quality free agents(not just lebron or melo)…I’ll put money on mitch signig at least two.

Let’s save this thread and we’ll talk about it later. But I’m pretty confident that I’ll be proven right. They are not going anywhere. But then again, could be wrong, that’s why they play games……….

The Yankees are without a doubt the greatest sports franchise in history. This isn’t really debatable.

  • Mack

Yankees, Lakers, Celtics, Montreal Canadiens. Everyone else is not on their level.

They said the same thing when Buss originally bought the team

I gotta say Slam, I’ve been a fan of you guys for years,…but lately, these fake headlines have been very annoying. Just tell it like it is. He was talking about the Clippers,…just because he said a few words about the Lakers doesn’t mean the whole statement was. I wish you would stop writing for clicks and go back to posting quality content.

  • Mao

Haha mark your words! That’s funny. How much are you willing to bet? The Knicks have won two championships, circa 40 years ago. Lakers won 5 in the past decade. When the Lakers have a 40 year drought, then you put them in the same sentence as the Knicks. Your whole statement was pretty ridiculous, and then you ended it with “mark my words”. Then I knew you were straight clowning.

He knows that was a subtle hit at Boston. Right now he’s a sour ex-girlfriend who left but doesn’t like that he was talked bad about.

    …it’s an offseason thing…..
    I hope.

Which one should be with the Zen Master instead of Mr Pringles….?

Real Madrid are the greatest franchise in sports history.

Oh wait, you meant “American” sports history? Then why didn’t you say so?

Btw, interesting that Rivers would say that right after leaving the Celtics, who have won one more NBA championship than the Lakers.

  • rande3p

Everyone keeps saying what the best team in the world is … likely isn’t an american franchise #sorrynotsorry

  • grgeblck

I think Houston Comets is the best franchise in sports history….. of WNBA….

  • Drig

I’m hoping he means American sports history because quite a few football ( soccer in america ) clubs are more worthy of that mantle.

They, along with the Yankees, are the best in American sports though. Hard to disagree with that.

  • LakeShow

    Ignorant.

  • berkamore

Ok, Slam isn’t going anywhere so we’ll see. And yes, I am willing to bet money on that. Are you?

Easy to set up, just create a paypal account and I will send you money if I am proven wrong. Again, I am assuming that you are a person of your word and will do the same. Deal?

  • berkamore

Is it the only word you can spell correctly? LOL. But you are right to keep it short, long paragraphs are tricky for you. LOL.

  • LakeShow

You’re obviously too smart for me. I’ll just stop now.

  • berkamore

I am not smart because you are successfully trolling me. But you are right, this conversation is absolutely pointless.

  • Drig

Heat don’t belong there. Not when they can’t even get sold out crowds when they are repeating……..

Spurs are a class organization though. They just don’t have the history to back it up unlike LAL or the Yankees.

  • vanhorn

When idiots say the Celtics have a better record in the finals.. At least we made it to the finals more than you guys. Know what that means? You couldn’t reach the finals, pricks. We’ve got the best winning record in the NBA so shove that down your throats

  • RedDragon10

Hardly. Baseball isn’t as universal as basketball or Soccer. Maybe best franchise in America. Even though I don’t personally think that way.
