NBA Suspends JR Smith Five Games for Violating Drug Policy

New York Knicks guard JR Smith is facing a five-game suspension for having violated the NBA/NBPA’s Anti-Drug Program. Per the NY Daily News: “The same source indicated that Smith did not test positive for a performance-enhancing drug. If the league suspends Smith for five games that would suggest that he tested positive for marijuana since the NBA’s drug policy calls for a suspension only after a third positive test. A second offense results in a $25,000 fine while first positive test calls for the player to enter a program. Smith, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, is currently recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to be ready for the Knicks Oct. 30 regular season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. If Smith is suspended it is unclear if the suspension will begin with the first game of the 2013-14 regular season or if it will begin when Smith is healthy enough to play. Smith is no stranger to trouble, having already been suspended a total 17 games by the NBA during his time with the Denver Nuggets. In 2006, NBA Commissioner David Stern suspended Smith 10 games for his involvement in a brawl against the Knicks. In August 2009, Smith was suspended seven games after he pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge for a 2007 auto accident that resulted in the death of a passenger.”

    I blame Rihanna…..

SE knew it. JR’s delusional NBA title guarantee makes sense now. JR smokin’ that “Broadway Joe” son.

  • Dfrance

So this is his 3rd positive test? Do they not disclose it until the 3rd strike?

  • JibbsIsBallin

Funny man. Smith knows what he’s doing, just doesn’t give a crap. Plus, when was the last time a little bit of Mary Jane didn’t help with some keen pain? They’re still not winning a ring though.

marijuana? players union should get this plant on the approved list already..

  • pposse

if your an nba organization and your player is injured but is suspended like jr smith is right now..can you take him off the IR for 5 games in which he serves his suspension and then say he got injured in practice and put him back on the IR list?

  • Dfrance

It says the suspension starts when he is physically capable of playing. I’m sure if the NBA knew he was on IR and then he gets suspended and is all of a sudden healthy, they’d investigate.

  • Ugh

I am shocked, SHOCKED to discover that JR Smith smokes pot.

    Must be his 3rd then.

“Marijuana has its own more lenient standards, where a first positive test results in treatment, a second positive result means treatment and a fine, and third positive test calls for a five-game suspension.”

    **Happy Gilmore Heckler Voice**….”JackAss!!”

  • Dfrance

Yeah, they just worded it all stupid, confused me for a second.

  • bike

JR mistake was purchasing a used Whizzinator at a local gun show.

I knew he was on something when he said the Knicks would win a championship this year

  • ClydeSays

    “I guarantee…. I’ll be suspended… At least once…”

  • pposse

but if you just say he reinjured his knee in practice sometime in between the suspension and when he will be eligible to play can’t you get away with it? i know its shady, but i mean he has 3 months to recover from the offseason until the first game, that should “technically” be enough time to supposedly get healthy. all i’m saying if i was an owner, coach, gm I would explore that option. Its all about winning!

  • Basketball_iQ

Why?? So critics like you can have a field day with it?

  • Basketball_iQ

If you smoke Newports making this sound bad,,, gtfoh

  • Biga5113

There should be no consequence for using a non-physically-enhancing drug. Especially if the player is physically incapable of playing. Weed is not going to help his chances winning games, so why suspend him?

  • Ganchan

Wouldn’t it just be easier to take him off the IR when he is 5 games away from being ready to play?

If its all about winning why is all about JR Smith?

  • hoodsnake

    Was Beasley suspended?

  • danpowers

we all knew that was coming when he promised a championship.

  • Interdico Scriptor

    Shock new it… same dealer

  • Interdico Scriptor

    Boom boom

  • Dfrance

Also, I would think if it was publicized, it’d also serve as a deterrent from a player repeating the offense. If you get caught and there is no real penalty, what’s stopping you from doing it again?
