Paul George Inking Max Extension With Pacers

by Leo Sepkowitz | @LeoSepkowitz

Last week, it was reported that Paul George would sign an extension before the season begins. Now it looks like the deal is nearly done, and it’ll be for max money. From Yahoo:

“All-Star forward Paul George and the Indiana Pacers are finalizing a five-year, $90 million-plus maximum contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports. A deal is expected to be signed this week, league sources told Yahoo. For the Pacers and George, who was voted the 2013 NBA Most Improved Player, the five-year deal will cement the gifted young forward as Indiana’s designated franchise player. George’s extension will begin with the 2014-15 season. He will make $3.2 million this season. In three NBA seasons, George has developed into one of the league’s most thrilling young talents, blossoming into a starring role in the Pacers’ march to a Game 7 against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals last season. George, who was selected to the All-NBA third team for the 2012-13 season, is part of the 2010 draft class that has until Oct. 31 to agree upon extensions to avoid restricted free agency next summer. George raised his scoring average to 19.2 points a game in this past postseason, up from 17 per game in the regular season. He has a strong chance to be part of USA Basketball’s 2014 team that will compete for the World Cup of Basketball in Spain, and the 2016 Olympic team in Brazil. The extending of George’s deal solidifies a Pacers core that could contend for an NBA title this season and beyond. After pushing the Heat to seven games a season ago, Indiana will return forward Danny Granger from a knee injury, and added a key reserve in a trade, forward Luis Scola, to strengthen what had been a weak bench. Indiana also signed free-agent forward Chris Copeland of the New York Knicks. Indiana re-signed forward David West to a three-year, $36 million extension in July, and secured center Roy HIbbert with a four-year, $58 million deal last summer.”

Might be early to give him a max contract, he is a great player tho

  • spit hot fiyah

i don’t mind the contract. he has untapped potential (probably more than he knows), he can become MUCH better offensively. Defensively he is already one of the best on the perimeter.

they could have saved a lot of money by not extending him and just matching a max offer from another team. this might be way for the pacers to give him increased confidence and basically handing him the keys to the team

  • JibbsIsBallin

Good for George. I think the last year’s playoff run really matured him a lot. I still think the Pacers are the biggest threat to the Heat, mainly because of Paul.

  • FuTangClan

I don’t see the SUPERstar that people see in this dude. Am I the only one?

  • ctk

His deal should of been between Durant n Batum ..should of got like 65…he flat out ain’t good for the max

  • straight cake

nope its not too early he has great potential:

  • Youngindy21

He deserves a Max. If both Larry Bird and Lebron James (2 All-Time Greats) cosign this kid then the rest of you sound like idiots trying to say he don’t deserve Max.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

Uhhh Slam, I know it’s still early but something pretty significant happened yesterday on the European basketball scene.

  • Youngindy21

And that’s one reason you are not a GM.

  • TR

This is gonna be an interesting year for the Pacers. They made a couple of moves, but so did everyone else. Heat got better, Nets got better and Chi will be better with Rose. Excited to see how they match up this year

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

No way! Lakers fans told me he was coming to LA. This is just shocking. Am I rite?!?!

  • Max

    Ofcourse he deserves me.

  • shockexchange

Exactly. You can’t play cash. They were going to re-sign him no matter what so why alienate the guy by only matching a max deal from another team. Now they have him locked in for five more years.

  • spit hot fiyah

something significant has been happening for the past 3 weeks, but European basketball doesn’t seem to matter on this site

  • RayJr

    What happened?

  • RayJr

    Yes

  • Mike Gilbert

LOL how would the Lakers be able to sign LeBron, Melo, AND Paul George…don’t be ignant!

  • BugEyes

pacers are signing max deals left and right to. very good players, not superstars. wow

  • shockexchange

Interpretation: It’s a “very good player’s” market. If you are a great player, your salary is capped. If you are a very good player, you will still have several teams bidding up your services under the “illusion” you’re a great player.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

    Lol

  • 23

    Heat got better?

  • 23

Just like when MJ decided Kwame was #1 draft pick material?

  • 23

Mmm its mainly because of the Hibbert+West combo. Now they added Scola.

  • bike

This guy has come a long ways in three years. Relatively unknown when he came out of college and never had much in the way of hype in HS. Poster child for the term upside.

  • KC

Paul George is a very good young player but I attribute a lot of this teams success to 7 footer in the middle and, the great overall balance of the starting 5. The pacers aren’t a contender because George is a dominant player. He is an allstar talent but, wether he proves to be a franchise player has yet to be seen. It’s going to get increasingly difficult to keep this team intact with one of their players getting a max deal. If I remember correctly , Granger got a pretty sizable deal himself. Look for lance Stephenson to be moving to another squad if he keeps improving because they aren’t going to be able to pay him. They could have an Oklahoma city type problem soon.

  • Wings23

As a Bulls fan I’m worried, the Pacers look pretty solid.

Paul George may not be a Max player today but he we can’t forget that he is only 23 and has a ton of room to improve. If he isn’t a max player today it’s pretty safe to assume he’ll be worth the contract in the coming seasons.

  • http://basketball-performance.com/ Basketball Tips

    can’t you see the sarcasm?

    http://basketballcoach.ca/

  • Neaat

No Los Angeles mostly likely won’t get any major free agent.

It’d be nice to see Lebron in a lakers uniform, but when they traded Shaq instead of Kobe it changed the dynamic of the team.

I wish the Lakers would have traded kobe for tracy mcgrady.

  • Swagnow

    that was utterly Max

  • jammie

I concur FuTangClan!!! Ill take Kahwi Leonard or Jimmy Butler for same production, less hype and 1/3 the price.
Sorry but Paul George (same goes for John Wall) is NOT a max player, he just extremely athletic and willing to play defense. However he turns the ball over too much, doesn’t take the best shots, minimal handle.
He should earn 8-10 mil because yes he is a fantastic player, but superstar max player, hell nah, 5 million of his yearly salary is hype

  • jammie

ditto. The max contract is now a contract of “well everyones doing it so”…

  • bike

He said ‘a’ Max, not THE Max.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

man, i believe we knew he would be getting a max this summer about 3 months ago. sorry i wasn’t clear, i am just learning how to use sarcasm….that was my attempt up there……

  • TR

Oden and Beasley joined the squad…

  • Caboose

Yeah, did you watch the Playoffs?

  • retrobat

Totally got that, man. Funny stuff.

  • Interdico Scriptor

lol. Stick to well spoken know-it-all. lol

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

The 7 footer in the middle signed a max deal as well. So, there’s that.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

They didn’t get worse. Still up in the air as to whether they got better.

  • Conor

“most likely”? Is that you, Nostradamus?

Trading two championships for a disintegrating spinal cord makes you a poor mock businessman.

  • Conor

Comparing a high school centre’s potential to an established N.B.A. player’s, coming off a series which actually saw him outplaying LeBron James at certain junctures? Ok.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i have learned my lesson. i’ll never try out that sarcasm thing again probably.

  • shockexchange

LOL. Everyone gets a max contract so as not to hurt a player’s feelings or make him feel less than another player. Max contracts are like the new T-ball – there are no outs and everyone gets a trophy.

  • Max

“Trying to sau he don’t deserve Max.

  • FuTangClan

    OK mr. cool guy.

  • straight cake

Paul George is a Max Player, maybe you should watch Basketball:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8nkTQCW68w

  • Feez_22

Roy hibbert got 4 yrs 58 million. It averages out to 14.5M a year. If you look at it, his salary is in the same range as andre iguodala and josh smith.

Paul george just signed a 5 yr 90 million dollar extension. It averages out to 18M a year and is pretty much the mega max under this cba. In fact, paul george’s contract extension in this new revised cba ECLIPSED the deal durant got under the old cba (5 yrs 85M). Paul george will be making more than durant, westbrook and harden.

Roy hibbert’s contract is manageable and is what a bunch of mid tier specialty players are getting. Paul george got superstar dollars… He makes the same average yearly money as durant and lebron now. So… there’s that.

  • Youngindy21

You are comparing a guy whose had no success in the league to a guy who already made the All-Star team. That is like comparing apples and oranges.

  • Youngindy21

Danny Granger’s contract expires after next season. The Pacers can resign Stephenson if they really want to but it may require trading some of their backups. Also Paul George’s contract is not set in stone yet.

  • 23

I’m not comparing players. I’m just saying that just because a HOF has an opinion, doesn’t necessarily make it true. Even if its the opinion of arguably the best ever.

  • 23

Wade is 1 year older, that’s worse imo. And I hear you on possibly being better. But I am not one of those ppl that thinks oden or Beasley is a difference maker.

  • 23

How many teams have Beasley or 0den made any better?

  • shockexchange

A max player would not have disappeared in Game 6 and Game 7 of the ECFs. He’s not there yet but he could get there in a few years.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Good thing these “max” contracts last longer than one year, are capped out, and pay more every season then huh?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Man that is just nonsense.

  • Jimmy Anderson

I believe he deserves a Max deal because of his consistency of getting better every year. He did not play at max deal level last year but he deserves it because he has future superstar written all over him in the next couple of years. He didn’t seem like he wanted to the main number one guy last year, but wanted to lead them. I think this max deal will push him to be the go to guy. I really like this deal because finding players like George are slowly becoming harder to find guys who are humble, great work ethic, loves to play defense, and doesn’t need to score 20 a night to be satisfied. Great young player I really see him and Granger helping each other out. Granger is going to want to prove why he used to be the main guy and do well while, George is going to show why he got the contract and is the #1 guy in town now. I really like Indiana’s moves the resigning of George, Hibbert, and West and adding Copeland was huge. This Indiana team is the only team I believe that can beat the Heat 4 times in a series. If George has anywhere near 24 PPG and 8 RPG this year, oh boy the Pacer are going to be very tough to beat.

  • shockexchange

And after the nonsensical rambling, the Shock Exchange stands corrected. A max player would have disappeared in Game 6 and Game 7 of the ECFs. It’s all sorted out now. Thank-you.

  • Mike Gilbert

maybe he is not a max player now, but he has played 3 years. Surely it’s not an awful investment to count on him improving even more than he already has

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    Obviously you missed it…

  • straight cake

Lebron and Harden no-showed in the finals in past years but they eventually redeemed themselves, PG is a young guy and is obviously still developing in the NBA.

  • Mike Gilbert

    oh lord

  • shockexchange

Harden disappeared, so that’s why OKC didn’t want to match what Houston was offering during the offseason. The Kang never disappeared though. He was merely a victim of “The LeBron Rules” ( http://clicky.me/thelebronrules ). *Welp*

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

And after self descriptive rambling, the shock exchange still expresses that he does not understand that not all max contracts are the same. As max is just a term, like “this”. Now every time I say “this”, is “this” the same “this”? Or “that”? Is “that,” “this”? Essentially, saying “And after the nonsensical rambling, the Shock Exchange stands corrected. A max player would have disappeared in Game 6 and Game 7 of the ECFs. It’s all sorted out now. Thank-you.” – or as self described, “nonsensical rambling”

  • shockexchange

And after more incessant rambling, the Shock Exchange stands corrected. A player really worth $90 million over 5 years would have disappeared in Game 6 and Game 7 of the ECFs. It’s all sorted out now. Thank-you.

  • shockexchange

Maybe the Shock Exchange can’t date Lola Falana now, but in 3 years … well, uh … you get the picture.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    You are welcome.

    funny but irrelevant

I agree. I’m just saying Roy Hibbert signed for the max money he could with the Portland Trailblazer.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

Oden just has to be better than Joel Anthony to make a difference.

  • Diego Franco

i agree he got a great potential
