Chris Smith Could Make Knicks’ Roster for Being JR Smith’s Brother

According to New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, his respect for JR Smith’s family will factor into the decision regarding Chris Smith’s roster spot. Per Newsday: “Mike Woodson said Chris is ‘still in the mix,’ and that his relationship to J.R. factors into the decision of whether to keep him on the roster. ‘Sure it does,’ Woodson said. ‘I look at him just like I look at J.R. Although J.R. is the guy who’s played in the uniform and has been very productive for us — I have a great deal of respect for that family and that’s his brother. I respect that. But we got to make some decisions and what those decisions are going to be at this point I don’t know.’ The Knicks have 12 players with guaranteed contracts, so they could keep up to three players. All signs point to Smith being one of them despite being just 1-for 7 in the preseason in a team-low 20 minutes, including none in Wednesday night’s 105-95 loss to the Bucks at Resch Center. Woodson said he will sit down with new president Steve Mills and other Knicks officials after practice Thursday to discuss cuts. Rosters have to be set by Monday. Woodson said the roster probably would be set by Friday’s preseason finale. ‘He’s still in the mix,’ Woodson said. ‘I can’t give you any answers in terms of which way we’re going to go.’”

So surprise here. That’s how the world works; it’s all who you know

  • Saleem Rainman

The real question here is why does J.R Freaking Smith have so much pull with the New York Knicks organization?

  • Cortez Mack

Bad sign. One more piece to the upcoming fiasco

  • spit hot fiyah

his agency is supposedly calling a lot of shots, from what i heard. i don’t know how much truth there is to that. maybe someone can add something to that

  • C.M.G

    ***D-League Roster.

  • Smits#45

A lot of teams can use “spectaculair” “streak” scorers. I think that is why teams are interested in him. Other than that I do not think he will ever be part of a championship team. Just too inconsistent in my opinion.

Why!? Why would Woodson do this? We need to sign one of the bigs as a cautionary backup to Stat/Kmart. Not this Chris Smith, a scrub that averages 6.7mpg 1.0ppg and 0.143 fg 0.500ft. in the Preseason!?! The Preseason! This guy is the king of scrubs. Knicks cannot possibly sign this guy just because he is related to JR.

  • danpowers

bigs? you sign the best player available, which in this case is toure murry – by far.

  • danpowers

chris smith is not nba material. toure murry needs to get that roster spot anything else would be madness

  • Chester

Why not bigs? We are so thin at the center position, there is no one to hold the fort if chandler goes down. Bargs and amare ain’t gonna do it, and Kmart is only 6″9 thats not going to work against big centers. Toure Murray is a fun exciting point but were loaded in that position already. But more importantly it”ll be a traversty if we end up giving the final spot to Chris Smith.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

yeah but who would you take steph currys lil bro or chris smith… chris smith more than capable defender but stephs lil bro would be able get his shot off in the L

  • danpowers

    none of botth

  • danpowers

there are two spots. so they should sign one of the bigs – e.g. diogu – and murry, anything else would be nonsense.

  • Anthony

Nepotism…deal with it MITCHES! If anyone’s basketball playing experience has eclipsed H.S. junior varsity…you know politics (and other things) becomes increasingly a part of the mix, not just talent & ability. I respect Woody for being man enough to admit it.
