Derrick Rose Says it Will Be Scary When He Finds His Groove

by Marcel Mutoni / @ marcel_mutoni

Boosted by Derrick Rose’s return to the lineup following an 18-month absence, the Chicago Bulls went 8-0 during the preseason and appear poised to be serious NBA title contenders.

The superstar point guard is encouraged by what he’s been able to do so far, but the former MVP sees plenty of room for improvement.

Derrick Rose explains the evolution in his game, and warns the rest of the League of what’s to come once the regular season begins Tuesday night.

Per the Chicago Sun-Times:

“I bet I surprised a lot of people, but at the same time, I know how hard I worked in the offseason just to get back on the court,” Rose said. “My hard work is paying off. I’m not in my groove yet, but I’m still able to go out there and control the game a little bit. I guess when I get back into my groove, it’s really going to be scary.”

“I think then I was just running,” Rose said of the way he used to play. “[Now, I’m] just controlling the game as a point guard, instead of just coming down. I think I’m shooting less shots this year, getting to the line more, just being smarter, being more efficient. I think [previous years] I was just coming down, jacking shots sometimes. But this year, that’s going to change.”

Derrick Rose averaged 20.7 points, handed out 5 assists, and most impressively, shot a blistering 44% from three-point range during the exhibition season. All of that from a guy who wasn’t playing at full speed, and still rounding into game shape.

Scary, indeed.

He’ll be fun to watch but Noah is the heart and Soul. He needs to stay healthy.

  • spit hot fiyah

i hope he uses this if he breaks his nose

  • CommsFC

And you’ll be scared when LeBron guards you D-Rose!

  • playa

I don’t think LeBron or whoever else will be shutting down D-Rose anytime soon, they all will be HOPELESS ,mark my words fellas.

  • @iamMrjump

My prediction D.Rose will be this season MVP. He may not beat the Heatles, I am still impressed that he raised his vertical

  • CommsFC

    Era of the King.

  • K Dub

D Rose easily when 100% healthy 2nd Best player in NBA! I agree No one will be able to stop him This Year! Ppl keep judging when Bron gaurded him in 2011 he was way older than Rose more experience Now Rose is older stronger faster better shooter! So Bron better look out! Rose only man in the league stopping Lebron from 5 MVPS and a 3rd Ring!

    mark my words fellas.

i did, and then copy pasted. did i take that to literal?

  • RunMoreThanYourMouth

I like the confidence coming from D-Rose in his answers to all the questions people have been asking him. But none of it really matters unless they can get past Miami. If they still can’t, it will be great for him, the Bulls organization and the league that he’s back, but it won’t mean anything more than that. So until May-June, we’ll enjoy watching him play, but in the back of our minds (those of us who aren’t fanatics) we’ll all just be waiting for Chicago-Miami in the ECF (if everyone stays healthy). And if anyone has kept up with Rose since Memphis and knows his mindset, then you know the biggest thing on his mind outside of his son and the rest of his family is beating Miami and getting to the Finals.

  • JibbsIsBallin

Its definitely going to be scary for the defenders when he gets in the groove. But the fact that he is a scorer and he tends to drive in the lane is going to put him on the ground a lot. Much like what happened to DWade earlier in his career and we all see what that has done to his body over the years. Hopefully DRose doesn’t get knocked to the ground a whole lot.

  • CommsFC

Just sit back and enjoy the show bro. The quest to the 3-PEAT begins.

  • shockexchange

Sometimes an injury can be a blessing in disguise. It gives players free time to work on their weaknesses. It’s clear D. Rose has been working on his shooting. If he shoots like he did in the preseason, the L is in trouble.

  • http://signup.divinerenergy.com/ Anthony Dixon

They gotta get past Brooklyn and Indiana First.

  • Ross Fawcett

Derrick Rose is going to be the finals MVP this year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’m just totally smitten with his jumper in the preseason. the evolution of that part of his game has really won me over.

  • danpowers

if he really continues to shoot that way he couldnt only become the mvp again, but also be legit this time lol

  • Slick Ric

    He was legit last time.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

your boys jumper looks so damn good, i’m starting to think you may be right about him, not immediately, but that jump to best PG in the league, might really be solidified by the end of the year if he doesn’t regress to old habits. and i don’t think he will, there are so many positive changes i’ve seen to his shot in the 3 preseason games i’ve seen.

  • Max

    looool

  • therichardkirby

cosign nbk. Rose clearly focused on his mechanics, and the work he put in the gym makes for better balance for his jumper. Scary

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

seriously, the knee injury is probably going to end up a blessing in disguise as long as he stays healthy.

  • danpowers

not if you put all tangibles in perspective.
that year in that order regarding true mvp-ishness: james, howard, rose. being the third most valuable guy in the league doesnt make his election a real upset or scandal, at least he was the most valuable guy on the best record in the east, and really had a great run individually – but i didnt really buy the hype neither.

howard carried a much bigger load with less support, but obviously more wins added (check win shares. rose ranked somewhere . lebron was just a victim of voter fatigue and a team that finished below most people’s expectations, which made his perception extremely subjective while rose had a decent year, but also a great defensive scheme / coach and players behind him, that enabled him to come up with that performance. just go with win shares and wins added. (im aware that this doesnt actually tell the whole story and leave room for estimates instead of pure facts, but imo are quite often legit evidence to rate a guys impact on teams wins): rose was 5th in win shares behind james and howard (and as always also behind cp3), 10th in win shares per 48 minutes and 5th in hollingers estimated wins added, with 19,0 behind howard 22 and james 25,7.
people tend to underestimate the impact of thibs coaching and the bull’s defense. in washington that year bulls wouldve been nothing but a slightly better john wall. put james or howard on a team like that and you got a playoff squad.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’m sorry but for the record, no team was better with Dirk on the court that season. and no team had a bigger drop off with their star player off then Dirk.
    .
And then Dirk and the Mavericks won the title.
    .
i think the true MVP of that season is the only candidate nobody mentions.

  • danpowers

first of all: my condolences for the squad given to you in the fantasy league.

shame on me! that you have to tell that to a german is really disgracing lol

  • bball knowledge

Already best PG in the league being the only former MVP other than Lebron and carrying his team to 62-20 in the regular season that year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’m probably going to still end up decent in that league. just gotta make a few moves. The only problem is, we have so many teams, it leaves me no room to add any good free agents. i’ma have to dominate you guys waiver wire wise to even compete.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

please don’t. an MVP award, and being on a great team does not just = best PG.
    .
    narrative doesn’t = best.
    mvp doesn’t = best.
team record doesn’t = best player
    .
feel however you want, but don’t make such an empty argument without any context.

  • Kadavour

has he ever averaged 8 ASTS in a season? He has to do better creating for others before he get’s BEST PG honors.

  • bball knowledge

Keep in mind that rose outplayed the best basketball player in the world in Lebron and led his team to 62-20 when most of his best players were in and out of the line-up with injuries and played consistently throughout the year.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nah, assists aren’t THAT important. He runs the offense extremely well, and he’s by far their best option offensively. I’d rather him average 26+ points than 8+ assists. As long as the team is beating people.

  • kc

Its time to sop talking and go out and prove it. In the words of KD “Don’t tell me, Show me.” or something like that lol

  • knowledge huh?

If he outplayed the best player in the world, they why did they basically get swept after game one lol ?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

keep in mind that Derrick Rose just sat out a whole season and his team just was a 5th seed and won a playoff series. He was hardly the “most valuable” player in the league.

    .

And do I really need to go over how meaningless a few regular season games are in the grand scheme of a season? Or do I need to highlight why Rose’s performance against LeBron in that regular season was indicative of just about nothing?

    .

And Chris Paul has still been better than Derrick Rose every season of his career except one……which is still extremely arguable, even though i’ll give Rose the edge in that season because he carried a larger scoring load, and his team won more games. But other than that, even the next season, he hasn’t proven to be a clearly “better” player than Chris Paul. At most, on the Derrick Rose side, it’s been arguable.

    .
again, feel however you want, but don’t come at me with a shallow argument.

  • pposse

hardest working superstar in the league?

  • danpowers

yes, that league is really deep, getting into scrubs territory in the latter draft rounds was interesting. guess youll be able to catch up as the season continues, none of us really has an all star caliber roster

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i’d still say that’s Kobe, but from what i can tell, Rose is definitely in that conversation.

  • pposse

yeah like all reports are saying rose’s confidence is stemming from the work he put into his game. Don’t know if he is the hardest worker or not, but there is a correllation between the work he put in and the quotes like the one on this page.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i just got stuck with guys like Nerlens Noel, Shannon Brown, CJ Watson, and Devin Harris.
    .
i only predrafted like the first 250 picks (yeah….”only” – didn’t realize i should have gone all the way to 400).
    .
But my first few picks turned out ok aside from Nash.
    .
I got a lot of the players I thought would over achieve this year. So as long as i’m right about all of them (LOL), i will be middle of the road competitive.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

either way, he clearly has a great head on his shoulders, and puts in the work necessary to be one of the all-time greats. just about staying healthy and humble.

  • bball knowledge

MVP is a regular season award after all and has no bearings in the playoffs and the last time I checked Miami was the better TEAM than Chicago that series.

  • Slick Ric

First and foremost, NOBODY underestimates Thibs Defensive system at all but that defense only got them to fifth last year…Rose impact is what’s really understated because some understand the importance offensively but not defensively, PG’s are more effective against the Bulls when he doesn’t play. Rose was the only player that season to be top ten in scoring and assist, he accounted for more of his teams points than anyone. People forget Boozer and Noah missed a combined 57 games but the Bulls were still able to finish with the number one seed ahead of LBJ and the Heat who were swept in the regular season by the Bulls. Rose was most valuable to a team that was actually a contender, Dwight season was impressive but he was on a fifth seeded team that obviously was not in serious contention for a ring. Players are rarely rewarded for that; LBJ was not just hurt because of voters fatigued but because of the question: Is he really Most valuable on a team that has somewhat underachieved with the likes of a top five and fifteen player at the time in Wade and Bosh? Its completely understandable how some could come to the conclusion of him being the Most Valuable Player.

  • Feez_22

Rose has looked really good in preseason. The dude’s jumper is looking really good and on top of it all, his vision has improved. His passing under pressure has improved and the bulls as a team are now more adept to making the right pass off of his passes for wide open shots. A few years ago, the bulls as a team weren’t the best at that but a few yrs under this same flex system really shows.

I definitely think rose will be scary but the next step in his development is a “less is more” attitude. Right now, he attacks these bigs with reckless abandon but that might increase his chances of injury. The next step is being a dual threat passer/finisher close to the basket like many of the elite pg’s we have seen lately (nash/paul/kidd to name a few). When that happens, o man… the dude will go to a whole other level.

This is going to be a GREAT season

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    well said.
    .
same as i felt then, his MVP was not really worth arguing against. He was definitely a top 5 player. He was definitely on the best regular season team in the league. and the narrative was definitely in his favor. as MVP is a subjective award, i have no real qualms with Rose being the winner in 2011.
    .
but i also hope (i know you know this, but others apparently don’t) people realize that MVP doesn’t = Best.

  • danpowers

reminds me of last year when i missed draft night and ended up with andrew bynum as my main man, i really had to overhaul the roster during the season, was still fun tho

  • Slick Ric

    Indeed.

  • LakeShow

35% on 3-4 attempts from three point land would do wonders for his game.

  • RunMoreThanYourMouth

They’re better than Brooklyn. And slightly better than the Pacers since they still don’t have a real PG. The last time Rose was healthy, the only team in his way was Miami. Not NJ/Brooklyn. I’m sure he’s not worried about Deron Williams who, even though he’s good, can’t do a thing to even contain Rose. LeBron can. That’s who the Bulls are most likely focused on more than any other team.

  • http://signup.divinerenergy.com/ Anthony Dixon

Brooklyn is not worried about Rose because he will shoot the Bulls out the game. Brooklyn is too balanced for them and i wouldn’t be surprised if Deng is traded.

  • ATL dynamite

I forgot where I read this from, but Boozer broke his right arm during childhood, and his father tied up his right arm to his back, forcing Boozer to practice his lefty hook – hence his all-around game near the basket now. An injury may be a blessing to people who are determined and dedicated.

  • Tiquan Green

Is the slam staff gonna give me some he@d like they was, earlier today.

  • NotaRosehaterbutcmon

    Can he shut up already.

  • Fitzy

Noah can have the Bulls. Derek Rose is the heart and soul of Chicago. That’s his home.

  • http://signup.divinerenergy.com/ Anthony Dixon

    lol

  • bike

He’s moving really well, he doesn’t look like he’s lost a step, and that jumper…wow.
But……he needs to take it easy. For a while anyway. Some of those preseason crashes to the floor are what is scary about his game. ACLs don’t grow on trees.

  • RunMoreThanYourMouth

Rose will shoot the Bulls out of the game? Because he’s been known to do that, right? Are you sure you know who Derrick Rose is?

  • http://signup.divinerenergy.com/ Anthony Dixon

His improves hooting will get too his head which will lead to excessive shooting. Boozer and the rest of the team will not benefit.

    adrian peterson of the L

  • shockexchange

Ha ha. He does look more like a running back than a PG. D. Rose barreling down would make anybody wanna bail out.

  • zeebo

Despite your apparent lapse in memory (or judgement), Kevin Durant is alive amd well thanks.

  • 3Chainz

Yea dudes been shooting like 50% from the 3… and that’s been a huge sample size. I’m not certain but i think he atleast took 3-4 a game.

  • 3Chainz

I know this happened to Ronnie Brewer, that’s why his shot looks garbage. Not sure about Booz tho…..

  • 3Chainz

    King Rose!!

  • 3Chainz

Neither team you’ve mentioned beat Chicago or Miami so I’d say they have to get past Chicago and Miami before you can make another comment… lol joking but seriously they have to get past CHI and MI

  • 3Chainz

Rose shoot the bulls out?? You from BK?

  • 3Chainz

    true…..

  • 3Chainz

Every game was close but game 1. Game one was the ONLY blowout in favor of the BULLS

  • 3Chainz

If you see its a Rose article why click on it???

  • Jonathan Thomas

This guy love to keep on bragging. He need to stay humble before another injury happen to him. Who have to give LeBron credit for staying quiet and humble with all the things he went through.

  • Jonathan Thomas

My prediction… the way Rose play. He may injury himself again. Don’t get cocky.

  • Guest

    that’s not nba regulation.

  • vic

And they never won another one. So what does it really mean?
