Doc Rivers Says Clippers Should Be the Best Team He’s Ever Coached

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

According to LA Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, his new team may no longer be known as “Lob City”, but they have their own formidable Big Three in Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.

Rivers, in fact, believes this group has the potential to be the best team he’s ever coached.

(The 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics are likely rolling over in their graves.)

“I’m always focused on our big three guys, Blake [Griffin], DJ [DeAndre Jordan] and Chris [Paul],” Rivers said. “Their leadership is important to our team. I’m always watching them. I think those are the guys that I have more focus on than anybody else.” [...] “That’s our big three, I like our big three,” Rivers said. “I like what DeAndre gives us. He gives us something a lot of the guys in the league can’t do. He can block shots, he can run the floor, he can defend, he’s talking and he’s in the best shape of his career. He’s doing a lot of great things for us.”

“They should be better than any team I’ve ever coached, I really believe that,” Rivers said. “They’re more athletic. They don’t have the veteran IQ but they should be in that area. We have a couple of individual defenders that can be dominating on defense. We have great speed but we don’t have the size in some ways as some of the teams I’ve coached.”

Expectations are sky-high for the Clippers heading into this season.

They have the talent and coaching to compete for a title, and as Doc Rivers surely knows, anything short of a very deep Playoff run will be considered a huge failure.

    I seriously doubt it

  • Christian

I know this is your new team and you wanna hype the guys up.. but best team you ever coached? Chill Doc..lol.

  • hashzz

Come on Doc…the clips are great, will win 55+ games this season. But somethings missing. I really thought getting kg and/or paul p would have put them over the top. Because of russell westbrooks injury, depending on how he returns, the clips could go to the west finals, but I just can’t see a title yet.

  • Sérgio

Oh, boy, that was the joke of the day. This Clip’s “Big Three” would be MURDERED by PP, KG and Ray Allen in 08. And I’m not even including Rondo and the supporting cast that produced the stingiest defense of the last decade.

Just pointing out: Doc said, “should be,” and Mr. Mutoni wrote, “has the potential.” No one’s saying the Clips today are better than the 2008 Celtics.

would be true if he coached the Nets

  • LakeShow

    That’s offensive to me Doc.

I hate the Celts, but that 08 team was ALL TIME great.

Wait till an egg hatches you d*ck.

  • Dfrance

I don’t think people believe they even have a shot to be better. I for one don’t.

“you know, i haven’t really seen how truly bad DeAndre Jordan is yet, haven’t seen Blake Griffin get lost on defense but these guys jump really high. this is the best team i’ve ever coached by far!”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    hell no they don’t.

  • ROBB

Blake: But coach, the other day I said Lob City is dead. We’re gonna find our own identity, and leave that high flying thing behind!!!

  • spit hot fiyah

“I’m always focused on our big three guys, Blake [Griffin], DJ [DeAndre Jordan] and Chris [Paul],”

If deandre jordan is part of your big 3 than this won’t be your best team ever

  • Junior Taylor

I don’t know about calling that 08 Team “all-time great”. Don’t get me wrong, they were a great defensive team but far from some of the greatest defensive teams in League history. Going all the way back to 99, there are 2 Spurs teams and 04 Pistons that are better defensively.

  • Dagger

It’s almost like Doc has gone out of his way to throw the Celtics under the bus these last few months. Every one of his quotes that make headlines are either implicitly or explicitly disparaging to the Celts.

  • Jerome

DJ can’t hit a shot from 4′+. Excellent use of language Doc.

  • LakeShow

They are really close. Probably on the outside looking in, you’re right.

  • LakeShow

Agreed. Not sitting well with me…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what are you basing that off of? 05-06 featured rule changes that really affected scoring. if this is based on opponent scoring and FG % you are pretty much ignoring all context.

  • Junior Taylor

    Team Defensive Ratings.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah that’s just based on points per 100 possessions. the defense had a lot more freedom in those seasons, that finals in 2005 is actually what spurned the rule changes that made offense easier.
check out the scoring in that series between Detroit and San Antonio

  • Dfrance

Its tarnishing his image a little bit for me.

  • Sparker

look, these guys were pretty tough with vinny friggin’ del negro at the helm. they are going to be a lot better.

  • Junior Taylor

Fair enough but I still think that 04 Pistons team was the best defensively since the 98 Bulls.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

That’s fair, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t letting the stats dictate your opinion

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Hopefully deandre can reach his potential under doc. If only KG was there to mentor him.

  • @iamMrjump

Thank you @d89d81f673dac06b16cade5b4bf19954:disqus @disqus_j65FuvcSML:disqus ! I was born and raised in Boston so I bleed GREEN #AGE ALL GREEN EVERYTHING – DOC IS A HATER ! HE CAN’T COACH Young Talent.. Let’s be honest 3 HOF’S clearly veterans (Pierce, Allen, KG) any decent Coach could have done a decent job.. DOC + RIVERS = OVERRATED

  • Junior Taylor

A little but I do remember just how dominant that 08 Celtics team was on defense. I remember visiting my dad a couple years back in Boston, so I got a chance to watch them play on a daily basis for a couple of months and boy were they fun to watch on the defensive end. A lot of people expected them to struggle coming out of the gates given that it was their first season (KG/PP/Rondo/Ray) together but that never happened and it was due in large part to their defense. I think they started the season 18-2 which ranks among the best 20 game start in League history.

  • ChosenOne

What were the new rule changes?

  • Smits#45

Exactly. They´re a good regular season team and they get noticed a lot because of their highlight plays. However by now they should know that they can´t play the same way during the post season as they do during the regular. Maybe Doc Rivers can make that happen.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They basically clarified the rules on the use if the forearm on the perimeter and other types of physical contact to ball handlers. Look at the scoring averages of Kobe-Iverson-LeBron in those seasons (and notice, they are all career highs) just for examples sake

  • Pride

Doc River is a certified d!ck for this one. I can understand he’s suppose to say good things about his new team, but you can’t just claim that there’re the best team hes’ coach. He is an ok coach… look at his coaching record if it wasnt for p2, sugar ray, big ticket and rondo then he would absolutely suck. Guys? remember; when he got canned from orlando because he couldn’t deliver as a coach. T-mac was his best player he has coach and he never took them anywhere. Smh. Doc needs to remember where he got his reputation from and stop talking like he’s the one that help celts get that title. Doc is so pathetic for this.

P.S. He has never even been in a single game with them yet as their coach and already talking. Big WOW!!!!

  • flog gnaw

    Ooooo that shade

  • shockexchange

The Clippers are even more annoying than the Lakers. At least the Lakers have actually won something besides lottery picks.

  • The Seed

I informed people, a long long time ago. Doc is overrated. He is a bandwagon cat, see Magic when he coached. Clippers will be the same team with Doc, then everyone will turn on Doc. That Celtics team is one of the best defensive teams I have ever seen as a team when they had Tony Allen. They were good team. Clippers are overrated with an overrated CP3, overrated PF, who does not block shots or rebound and a Franchise owner who don’t care about winning. BOOK IT

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i never bought that they’d struggle (i had picked them to win the title both that, and the next season) i actually thought it was perfect from the jump. Finally pierce and allen got to have a defensive anchor behind them. All 3 guys were at the end of their primes, and none had won anything, so none of them brought in an air of superiority. it just seemed like a perfect mix, especially with Garnett being the best, and more unselfish of the bunch.
the guy who did get affected by that season was Rondo….he loved the attention he got from being a good passer, so he traded effort on defense to do ALL of the initiating on offense until the last 4 or so minutes when the ball would filter over to Pierce. If he would have stayed hawking the ball like he did that first season on defense (and if they kept Tony Allen), they could have had a never before seen run of dominance on that end of the court.

Doc needs to sit the hell down somewhere and shut up. Why is this even news?

  • Evan Boland

Doc needs to stfu I’m so tired of hearing of him. He’s changed so much.

  • Evan Boland

    All true

  • Björn Atli

    but DeAndre is like 6’11

  • Chic Sosa

(The 2008 NBA Champion Boston Celtics are likely rolling over in their graves.) -.- Perfect example of terrribly misusing a popular phrase

  • grgeblck

For once, the headline didn’t mislead us.

  • danpowers

if anyone gets them to play something close to good defense, it will be doc. they’ll be fine and the west’s top team (as always: barring major injuries)

  • danpowers

overrated? even though the east was weak by that time: check the record of his magic squads and have a look at the quality of these rosters.
calling him a bandwagkon cat is nothing but proof of a total lack of basketball knowledge.
the animosity towards rivers due to his “departure” from the celtics comes from desillusionated fans who were naive enough to think that class and loyality would exist outside the spurs organization.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I loved that season where Kobe was averaging 35 ppg, Iverson 33 ppg, LeBron 31 ppg, and Gilbert Arenas 29 ppg. It was awesome.

  • Blarmac

  • Interdico Scriptor

as if…. what a load of sh*t. He’s got a new team, he can’t placate everyone.

  • Interdico Scriptor

    Thank you

  • Ken

If you take over a team and they are already as good defensively as the worst of your title contention teams why would you not believe that with your coaching that they can be even better.

The Clippers were a top 10 defensive team last year its not like hes talking about the Nash Suns .

Its like if Thibs took over the Grizzlies or the Pacers would it be such a huge stretch to say they should be better defensively than previous teams given where the arr already at when you take over ?

Everything said now gets blown out of proportion

  • Max Tubu

Also he has been up 3-2 in a playoff series 4 times and lost. Orl-det,bos-orl,Bos-la and bos-Mia. The worst was up 3-2 against orl with 2 games at home and they lost both. That’s just not getting it done

  • Max Tubu

D rivers is very overrated. There are a lot of coaches who could have won a champ w the big three. When he was at Orlando he never won a Series. He also has the worst season record ever in celtics history.
