JR Smith Could Replace Iman Shumpert in Knicks’ Starting Lineup

According to New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, there’s a strong possibility that JR Smith could be moved from the bench and into the starting lineup. Sorry, Iman Shumpert. Per the NY Post: “Woodson reiterated he wants to go with a traditional shooting guard this season rather than last season’s backcourt featuring two point guards. Shumpert, coming off a sore shoulder, likely will start the preseason opener Wednesday in Providence against the Celtics, with point guard Raymond Felton — unless Woodson feels Shumpert isn’t ready. ‘I’d like to go with a big lineup with Raymond and either J.R. or Iman at the two[-guard],’ Woodson said. ‘If I can get to that point where they’re competing [for it]. We’ll see how it plays out.’ Shumpert started last season after returning Jan. 17 from an ACL tear. Woodson may be trying to light a fire under Shumpert in not guaranteeing him a starting job. Smith said last week he would no longer complain about the sixth man role. ‘We’re still trying to figure out Iman [and his role],’ Woodson said. ‘I’m going to turn to him, play him and [get] his confidence in his game.’ Woodson indicated Shumpert is more prepared to learn this season. ‘When he came in, some of the veteran guys got to him early and he was able to listen,’ Woodson said. ‘With young players, you got to listen and accept coaching. As coaches, we’re not always right. But you have to accept coaching. He’s done that.’”

jr smith instead of iman shumpert in the starting five? soo…. woodson is trying to play a “no defense” starting five and a “no scoring” second unit?

couldn’t have said it any better

But you know it’s like when you substitute you bring off all your starting 5. It’s a risk to get a strong scoring punch in the beginning of the game and rely only on tyson to prevent easy buckets.

Then slowly bring in some defense by substituting iman in for Jr or Ron for bargnani and move Melo to the 4.

Woodson’s taking a gamble with this creative scheme maybe it pans out.

I really want to see how the warriors will use their line up. I personally think klay thompson should come off as a scoring punch when curry is out. And move iggy to the 2 and have barnes start. Because he and curry together sometimes are a wrecking crew from the 3 if they are both on, but if one of them is off then its better separate them.

you know how some coaches like to offense/defense for like the last 3 minutes of a close game? woodson should try that for an entire season at every dead ball

JR’s not consistent enough to be a starter and everybody knows it.

could be interesting to watch. still gt a bad belly feeling with jr, bargs, felton and melo in the same lineup

youre right. but i just love the luxury of having this extra scoring punch off the bench to give the starting unit a little lift. that was really huge for the team last season. on the other hand youre right, there wont be 5 – 5 substitutions and enough good players on the bench to mix it all up.

I guess Shump heard about this and decided to bring out his perfect shooting night…
