Nerlens Noel Likely Out for the Season

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

The big man nightmare continues to haunt the Philadelphia Sixers.

Barely removed from Andrew Bynum’s varying hairstyles on the bench, the Sixers will likely not have the guy who was supposed to man the paint for a second consecutive season.

Sixers head coach Brett Brown told reporters on Monday that rookie center Nerlens Noel, still recovering from a torn ACL, isn’t expected to play in 2013-’14.

Per the Delaware County Daily Times:

Brown made that statement Monday night in Columbus, Ohio, before the Sixers played the host Cleveland Cavaliers in a preseason game on the campus of Ohio State University. “I doubt, everybody doubts (Noel) is going to play this year,” Brown said. Brown went on to say that Noel has shown improvement in his rehab, but added that progress been “slow.”

This is the first instance that Brown has ever hinted of Noel’s injury causing him to miss his entire rookie season. Noel has been traveling with the Sixers while rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, an injury he sustained last February in a game at Kentucky, where he played one season. The Sixers had intimated all along that Noel’s debut with the team seemed most likely in 2014, possibly as early as January, but had never assigned a timetable for the 6-11, 230-pound center.

No official decision has been made regarding Noel and his surgically-repaired left knee, but Sixers fans probably shouldn’t hold their breath about seeing the rook — or anything too positive from their team — on the court.

He came into the League with a chip on his shoulder, talking a big game, and scored a splashy shoe deal.

Nerlens Noel will have to wait a while longer until he can prove the doubters wrong.

You know, I’m from Indiana, so I naturally dislike anyone that plays/ed for UK. I don’t like this kid’s attitude all the time, but man if I wouldn’t like to seem him succeed. Hope this isn’t another big man bust. His legs are just so skinny…

  • @iamMrjump

dam I wish this young man a speedy recovery ! One of the best talents that came out Massachusetts in years, plus I am rooting Haiti needs another superstar lol

  • King David

    he sucks anyway

  • Fat Lever

Nothing to see here. Sixers have the luxury of throwing away the ’13/’14 season. Better to ensure he’s as close to 100 than take the slightest risk of re-injury.

Evan Turner will have to step up.

  • Dfrance

“Tank city b*tch, tank tank city b*tch”

Guess he’ll have to wait a little while longer to take revenge on the 5 teams that dared to pass him up

  • Anthony

The first big they pick with a regular Cesar hair cut will post nearly 20 & 10 a game…(inventive Tyga reference)

I think he’ll be a bust unfortunately. He was limited even in his 1 year at UK. His defensive is excellent just like AD was at UK but AD had a much better offensive game. I don’t really see Noel being that great.

  • truf

    bynum 2.0

  • Melvin flynt

What a bust! Hope he gets better!

  • Dfrance

Lol, yeah these wild haircuts ain’t working out since AI left.

best nickname i’ve heard for them?
    .
    “the 6 and 76ers”

  • docio

His D tight. He okay for real they just wanna let him get a full year of recovery and lose as many games as possible in the process so Andrew Wiggins is his teammate next year.

  • Fat Lever

Love it. It’s going to be brutal down at the WF Center this year, but if we get that franchise player in next years draft that we’ve been missing for the last 5-7 years that makes us relevant again, it’s all worth it.

  • Dfrance

    Lmao, thats great!

  • anon

Maybe the 76ers should bring back AI — he’d be the best player in that roster. Just sayin’…

  • spit hot fiyah

trying to be like d rose

  • Jerome

This is terrible news. On the upside I would buy Wiggins’ Sixers jersey in a heartbeat.

  • You Know

Stop being so hard on Nelens, OBVIOUS TANK MOVE. GOD FORBID HE WON THEM SOME GAMES THIS SEASONS

  • bike

This doesn’t sound good. Seems like they would want to get their top pick some playing time even if it was limited. It’s not like he was going to help enough to disqualify them from the lottery jackpot anyway.

  • LP @ThisisEther

    lolllllllll

  • Wings23

He should change his number to 365 to note the number of days that pass him by before he gets to play again

  • Feez_22

A lot of people don’t know but nerlens is basically nursing 2 injuries. Yes, he is nursing his ACL back to health. However, when he was in high school, he fractured his growth plate in that same knee. Doctors told him to not play basketball for 2 years because that growth plate needed time to heal and he didn’t listen. All in all, he will now have 1 year and 9 months to heal his acl and on top of that can finally take the time to fully heal that growth plate injury.

  • melvo

I’ll never understand that Jrue Holiday trade…
It’s a point guard’s game today. The sixers had a top 10 PG, and decided to trade him for an injured project.

  • ballislife

Yeah they are winning anything anyways why rush him back to the dumpster fire that is going to be sixer basketball this year.

  • Caboose

    Wiggy and Randle.

  • Caboose

230 pounds? Either Philly is lying by a whole lot, or Nerlens is on the Eddy Curry diet cause he sure as hell didn’t put on 25 pounds of muscle this summer.

  • underdog

Blake missed his first season too, he’s still turned out to be quite good. I’m not saying Noel will be anything close to Blake, but it’s just too early to give up on his career. I wish him all the bests.

  • JML-G

i kinda suspect this will be Bynum/Oden situation and not Blake Griffin one…

  • bball knowledge

Tanking in this case is a good idea because they will have a chance at Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker both guys who can change a franchise longterm.

  • bball knowledge

Jrue Holiday reached his ceiling and it was clear he was not going to lead them to the playoffs or anywhere else for the time being.

  • robb

I do believe he gained 25 pounds but not of muscle. He’s dealing with an torn ACL which means he’s not working out a lot. He’s just out of shape.

  • dyop

i was waiting for this article to be posted here in slam so I can enjoy reading “tanking” comments. I wasn’t disappointed.

This is terrible. I feel for the dude, hope he comes back next year and plays well. We don’t want to witness another bynum oden storyline lol

  • RealG23

    Another shitty season coming soon…

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Neither of those two will. It’s Julius randle that will. And many ppl are sleeping on the young feulitosa Dante exum

I say tank pick up exum and randle and tank again pick up Myles turner and tank one more time for the heck of it

  • bball knowledge

Randle doesn’t stand out to me but that’s just my opinion.

  • bball knowledge
  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

how many really feel nerles will be factor defensively. i mean if he alys center you know hes too samll to stay with bigs and if he alys pf those versatile 7footers like garnett are gonna do damage

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

who gonna win ROy this year?
