Suns Trade Marcin Gortat to Wizards For Emeka Okafor

It’s Playoffs or bust for the Washington Wizards in ’13-14. So when Emeka Okafor suffered a neck injury last month, leaving the team without a center, general manager Ernie Grunfeld was facing some pressure to do something.

And something Grunfeld did on Friday, pulling the trigger on a trade that sends Marcin Gortat from the Phoenix Suns for Okafor’s expiring contract and a top-12 protected 2014 first-round pick. The Wizards also received Shannon Brown, Malcolm Lee and Kendall Marshall, who are expected to be waived immediately.

Per the Washington Post:

“The Washington Wizards announced Friday evening that they have traded center Emeka Okafor and a protected 2014 first-round draft pick to the Phoenix Suns for center Marcin Gortat.

“The Suns will also send guards Shannon Brown, Malcolm Lee and Kendall Marshall to the Wizards. Washington is expected to release Brown, Lee and Marshall, a former standout at Bishop O’Connell in Arlington. The draft pick is protected through the No. 12 selection.

“Okafor has missed training camp and is out indefinitely with a herniated disk in his neck. He averaged 9.7 points and a team-best 8.8 rebounds in 79 games last season and was hailed for bringing a professional, workmanlike attitude to the Wizards. Okafor is in the final year of a deal that will pay him $14.5 million this season.”

The Suns now have four potential first-round picks in next June’s Draft—their own, Washington’s, Minnesota’s and Indiana’s.

Awesome trade for the Wizards and Gortat.. Tank city for Phoenix though.

  • Shifty

Whoa……….I wonder whos going to pick up those waivers……..must suck for the players who are playing one day and then BOOM waivers the next…..

  • danpowers

playoffs for washington and a bright future for the suns – thats what i call a win win situation… except for okafor, i feel for this guy

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

The heat should pick up Shannon Brown.

I don’t see how emeka okafor fits in with the suns. Gortat seemed like a better running type for bledsoe and dragic, but now Wall has a big who fits his style more on the pick rolls and fast breaks.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    Eric Bledsoe Julius Randle

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Ryan McDonough for President!

  • Smits#45

I suppose the suns’ medical staff know something that the wizards don’t.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

I remember you and I debating on Kendall Marshall’s game back when he was entering the draft. Was he just a bad fit for the Suns, or is he simply not a serviceble back-up pg at this point in his career?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I think I defended him right? Smh, Anyway, whoever did was wrong (think it was me). .
He can’t shoot. And he can’t defend. And he is not athletic. Seems so from here at least. Looks like a long run in the D League is ahead for him.

  • Da-Meat-Hook

You were pretty high on him because he was an elite passer. Which he is. All I remember from that convo was me comparing him to a more polished Marcus Williams, whiched pissed you off lol.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol, he’s quite a bit bigger than Williams was, that guy was so damn tiny, and he was so fearless. Marshall seems afraid of his shadow. If he develops any sort of shot, he could become a rotation player……but I don’t see that happening. I was totally wrong about him.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Or they are tanking and freeing up cap space while grabbing an extra draft pick

  • Da-Meat-Hook

No worries. I thought Emeka Okafor should have been drafted over Dwight, so the fak do I know?!

  • Smits#45

That is probably the main reason but still gortat is a solid center in my opinion that wouldn’t have cost them too much to keep around.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They just drafted Alex Len 5th……and Gortat helps them win games they don’t want to win. While Okafor is out indefinitely with a neck injury, and has an expiring contract that will not be renewed.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol there is no exact science, and it’s not like we get to see a very big sample of these guys before the league.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    the tanking is only reason.

Len could have shifted to the 5 and gortat play the 4.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

i mean its impossible to tell because of also how the nba team influences the development of a player as well.

kawhi leonard is a perfect example. put him on the bobcats like mkg and he’s an afterthought. but how the spurs system has amplified his performance he’s not considered to be a future staple in the league as an allstar repeat.

If carmelo had been drafted by the pistons. he would have had more mentoring from those 4, tayshaun doesn’t seem that talkative on tv but maybe behind the scenes so ill say 5 pistons. carmelo’s game would have been different possibly more efficient and more playmaker with more defensive effort.

  • uqk

they could get more than injured emeka for gortat

  • JML-G

Okafor will prolly join a contender next summer so its cool for him too

  • LLC#12

Surely The Suns got robbed a bit here? Anyway, Shannon Brown back to the Lakeshow? Make it happen!

  • Stepfan Raiford

    5th seed

  • Stepfan Raiford

    4 first round draft picks….wow

  • Caboose

Why do people assume this is a trade that allows Okafor to play? It’s not. It’s to grab more draft picks and shoot for an 0-82 record to get Wiggins or Randle. So for those of you saying “the Suns got ripped off,” they didn’t. They did exactly what they wanted.

  • bball knowledge

    4 first round draft picks.

  • RKJ92

Mannn, nbk this looks great for your team! I read this yesterday and immediately thought damn Phoenix is going to automatically get Wiggins, Randle, or Randle now haha. You must be so happy now that your only competition is Phili for that first pick, AND you have Bledsoe + Len, a HUGE amount of cap space to resign Bledsoe and maybe another solid player, and multiple draft picks to work with man I’m so jealous haha.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I am just happy that I have a great chance to watch one of those guys for their whole careers in person on a team that is built to evolve. Ryan McDonough for President.

  • Enigmatic

Nothing’s guaranteed, of course, but even if Phoenix ended up with the 4th pick, they would be able to choose whoever hadn’t yet been picked out of Randle, Wiggins, Parker or Smart, who would all challenge for the number 1 pick in most drafts. That’s dope.

  • RKJ92

Ya I’ve been to a bunch of Raptor games in my day but nothing was more special then Carter throwing in down on players live in the first row. I honestly hope you’re able to have that same experience in Phoenix if you’re able to draft one of the aforementioned players. It’s been awhile since the Amare Nash years haha.

  • RKJ92

Enigmatic its more then just those guys on the board; collectively you have Wiggins, Parker, Randle, Smart, Exum, Harrison, Gordon, and Embiid. Like dude this draft is STACKED any position from 1-8 you will be walking out of the draft with either a superstar, a star, or a potential all-star.

  • Enigmatic

Oh, I know. I follow the NBA draft every year like I work for nbadraft.net or Draft Express haha.

I was merely making the point that even with the 4th pick, which usually brings disappointment in most drafts, this one will yield a likely franchise player, with those 4 being the most highly touted.

Hell, like I’ve said before on here, I’m rooting for the Bobcats to get the 11th – 14th pick so my Bulls can snatch up a guy like Willie Cauley-Stein, James Young, or Wayne Selden. Kids that would be top 10 picks in most drafts.

  • Tobias Fernandez

Goran Dragic is next to get traded

  • Nathan Shane Long

This trade is a signal that Phoenix is going to give a big contract to Eric Bledsoe that Kendall Marshall is another typical UNC bust and that Phoenix really like Archie Goodwin and his potential even though he left Kentucky three years to early and he will get backup minutes at point guard this season but anyway this trade don’t help Washington Gortat has become irrelevant the past two years and i know most you idiots on here don’t watch preseason basketball but Washington looked GARBAGE their record was a pathetic 2-5 Bradley Beal was the only bright spot he is Washington best player not John Wall they won’t make the playoffs while Phoenix went 5-2 Bledsoe looked great in preseason being the “man” on that team

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    2 chainzzz

  • nba_socrates

Dang! Kendall Marshall already outta the NBA after being a lottery pick a year ago dayum!

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Shout out the homey perfect pair

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Snap…. they are definitely going to cop a decent rookie….or 3 in the next draft. Mind you, there goes any semblance of trying to look competitive out there……. boston and phoenix for the top 2 picks in next years draft…?

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

As was I… I thought he was going to be my new fav pg….. eh.

  • AndyK415

    76ers?

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

  • The Philosopher

    Watch John Wall this year.
    Just watch.
    And, great pickup by Washington.

  • LLC#12

How is 11 and 8 last year, and 15 and 10 in 11-12 irrelevant? How is Beal better than Wall?

  • bball knowledge

    #truuuuuuu

  • Nathan Shane Long

Marcin Gortat has put up mediocre starters numbers the past two seasons he ain’t been nothing since Nash left Phoenix as far as Washington is concerned if you had watched any preseason games which i know you have not it is very obvious who is the Wizards best player is and that is Bradley Beal John Wall has looked look like John Wall shooting bricks committing turnovers looking clueless the usual for him nothing new while Beal shooting has improved as has his scoring

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

If you are chrisitian, study where the bible comes and what christianity is rather than focusing on basketball. Who wrote the Gospels, do original texts exist or erroneous copies, Did people change the Bible (Martin Luther, and more) to create new religions under chrisitianity. Which Gospel teaches the authentic teachings of Jesus. If he was Rabbi then he could never have believe he was God because by definition jew is a person who believes in one God. Don’t give supernatural origins to a book just because the masses say it is. Look up White Privelge that white jesus image sure oppressed many Blacks.

Did St. Paul really adapt teachings of Jesus to fit with Roman Paganism. Look up the Mithraic Religions. Some scholars say there is partial/no comparison but it’s odd similarities. Persian Mitrhaic Religion and Roman.

The negative impact christianity has had on scientific progress and race relations is terrible. WAKE UP PEOPLE Revolt against the oppressors.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

The draft pick and getting rid of the other players was what they wanted. taking okafor was their bargaining chip, not their prize.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

lol. substitute lakers for heat… and that is true of the last 10 years. Are the Heat the new Lakers?

  • Caboose

What are you doing to help the revolution, comment on a basketball site? Nice job there, Lenin.

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

ahhh yes. Say Phoenix, 76ers then Boston – bottom 3 order?

  • AndyK415

I would definitely have to say Philly, Phoenix, and then Boston based on their rosters. I think Phoenix has a couple more players than Philly.

  • http://triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    It’s a race to the bottom Andy!! : – )

  • AndyK415

This is the draft to do it for.

John Wall cannot shoot the basketball,Gortat won’t change that. He isn’t a hell of a playmaker either, just a great athlete and a nice handle. The passing and shooting elements of his game are not advancing like I though they would.

Brother. Snap out of it. This is a forum, none of this is real; the names, the guesses, the opinions, the personalities – none of it. In real life we’re clerks/janitors/students in dorms/soldiers/adolescents/caretakers etc, therefor you don’t need our approval to ask/say anything. Stop taking it so seriously and practise being a little more accessible. Dude, I was the king of saying the most redundant superficial sh*t on this site for YEARS (I’ve since been surpassed) but that’s what it’s all about, growth. Look and you’ll see in anonymity there is great truth amongst the lies.

  • Interdico Scriptor

Gortat and Howard were an underrated tandem back in the Orlando days. Is that a reflection of SVG or Howard that they didn’t utilise that skill set more often? I mean VG coulda play Gortat at the 5 and DH at the 4 and wow, hat coulda worked..Does that show that Howard is not very good working with other bigs? cos Gortat has a decent offensive repetoire, a does Asik?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Gortat is much further along offensively then Asik probably ever will even get. But the reason he wasn’t utilized with Howard is because Stan Van Gundy understood that Orlando as a whole was reliant on spacing. They weren’t a defense first team, and with Gortat and Howard sharing minutes, if defense isn’t your strength, then it just isn’t worth it.
    .
Kevin McHale i’m sure is just going to use Asik/HOward together because of Asik’s true value, and contract. Other than that, he will be dealt at the first sign that things are actually better with him and Howard not sharing the court. I wouldn’t expect Asik on Houston’s roster past December.
