Carmelo Anthony Thinks the Lakers Should Pay Kobe Bryant $40 Million a Year

While the Internet burns to the ground in reaction to the surprisingly massive contract Kobe Bryant signed on Monday ($48.5 million over two seasons), Carmelo Anthony says that, if anything, the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t paying their superstar enough. Per Newsday: “They got off easy,’ Anthony said. ‘He’s Kobe, man . . . I’d at least give him 40 [million] a year and let him bow out gracefully.’ The collective-bargaining agreement doesn’t allow that, but it tells you how Anthony feels about Bryant: They’re friends. Bryant has called Anthony and tried to help him through some tough times in his career. He could be one of the first to call Anthony when he becomes a free agent July 1. Anthony didn’t talk about his future before the Knicks tried to snap a five-game losing streak late Monday night against the Trail Blazers. He has said he wants to stay with the Knicks, but he believed they would contend for a championship this season. Right now, that’s as realistic as the Jets or Giants making the Super Bowl. If the Knicks don’t go deep in the playoffs or make major changes to upgrade the roster, there’s no guarantee that Anthony will re-sign just because they can offer him five years and roughly $129 million, about $34 million more than any other team. Anthony says he continues to remain positive because he has to for his team, but he also had some revealing comments about the Knicks’ 3-9 start. ‘I think it’s time for us to kind of get that monkey off our back,’ he said. ‘It’s starting to turn into a gorilla. I can’t handle that. It’s starting to get tough. When you’re losing, it’s not fun. Are we having fun on the basketball court? No. The game is not fun right now. When you start pressing, pressing, pressing, it makes everything that much worse. So no, we’re not having fun playing basketball right now. We got to get back to that.’”

Carmello must open his eyes and contact chicago come July 1 – quit being young and dumb!

LeBron, Carmelo and all the first rate free agents are happy. Kobe just drove everybody’s asking price UP.

Here’s what’s gonna happen this summer:

    Ring!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Carmelo: “Yeah?”

Dolan (of the Knicks): “We love you and want you to stay with the Knicks. How about 20 million per year?”

Carmelo: “F..k you. Kobe is making 25 and I am way better than he is”

Dolan: “Let me work on something and we’ll call you in one hour” Hangs up.

Dolan (out loud in his office) to himself: ” F..k Jim Buss and F..k Kobe. Even when the Lakers are a joke, they still manage to f..k it up for everybody. F..k them.”

I can’t even imagine what the conversation in Miami is gonna be like. LOL.

I see you have moved on.

i havent im still in denial. What people don’t understand is that Rose is everyone in Chicago’s godson…when he hurts we hurt, when he is happy we are happy…

  • spit hot fiyah

carmelo anthony makes david khan look like a financial genius

  • JML-G

Lebron doesnt need to chase a huge NBA contract. and the best thing about it – he wont!

  • bike

Actually, Kobe could have got much more but he settled on 48 million under the conditon he gets a statue at Staples as soon as he retires. And it has to bigger and shinier than all the others. Much bigger. Way more shinier.

  • pposse

yeah cause if he did he would be a complete hypocrite

  • berkamore

Maybe you’re right. But at this point, it may be about bragging rights. When Jordan made 30+ mil per year in his last few seasons, nobody could even look at his paycheck because he WAS the League.

Now this summer, LBJ could ask why Kobe makes more than he does when he (LBJ) is the best player in the League. Should be interesting.

Which brings me to another point, the Superstar that the Lakers want to attract,………LOL. Suppose, for the sake of argument, that LeBron wants to go the the Lakers. Do you really believe he’s gonna take less than Kobe when he’s the best player on the team?

Oh man, that Kobe deal is flawed on SO many levels. But hey, free country and it’s not taxpayer (our) money so who cares really?

  • LakeShow

You think Kobe “needs” money? LOL

you are missing the opinion of a lot of people in chicago. (i actually agreed with you until i started to read some of what was being said), for example, https://t.co/JRAiTmPHEX

ahhh the trolling make it stop! i seriously can’t handle it.

Okay maybe not ‘everyone’ but you get my original point.

There might be a day where i can contemplate the bulls not building a team around D Rose, but I want to emphasize the word ‘might’ and that day is definately nowhere near today.

  • grgeblck

the difference is individual vs. team. ;)

Instead of bronze it’d be gold and silver studded, and designed by his wife.

  • havoc33

Lebron only took a paycut knowing he would have a cakewalk to the Finals for years to come. Get real.

  • bb91103

I don’t think Dolan cares what the other teams are paying (sort of). He is kind of in his own world.

  • bb91103

t has nothing to do with the money. It’s the principal. LBJ doesn’t play for free does he?

  • bb91103

Yep. It is a business move. He knew that without a Championship people would give him a hard time no matter what kind of number he puts up. He can average 50/10/15 with Cleveland but people will still say, well you haven’t won. He want to be the biggest and the best star and he knew he needed rings to make that happen.

  • bb91103

I am not from Chicago and not even a Bulls fan but I love watching D Rose play. I Tivo the games on WGN to watch later (West Coast time).

  • bryyzz

Correct me if I’m wrong, but he’s not making the most money in Miami either

  • JB

Kobe is being paid for more than his current skill set, that much is obvious. Its a show of loyalty from the Lakers. He could have gotten 33 million. He took 23.5 . As a Laker fan do I wish he took a little less? Yes. Did Kobe earn to go out being paid 23 mil on his 20th year as a Laker? Yes.

  • JB

and NO state tax. Really wasn’t that big of a cut by NBA salary standards.

  • JB

Its a 2 year deal. A free agent could sign for MUCH more money. And the Lakers aren’t going for lebron. They are going for Melo/monroe/Bledsoe type guys. Lebron isn’t going to the lakers. Lakers don’t need to hit a homerun in 2014. They just need a hit. 2015 will be a big year too.

  • JB

    Melo’s gonna be a laker in 2014

  • Boonie K.

LBJ made more on endorsement than Nba contract right? so he should be playing where he wanted to.
Melo on the otherhand dont deserve big money, he can’t lead a team. He can’t even lead them on win streak unless he is on a very very good team (Denver) and have second /third scoring options or it will be just another 10-28 night for 25 points.
