Knicks Reportedly Want Rajon Rondo in Blockbuster Trade

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Things aren’t going very well for the New York Knicks. Off to an ugly 3-6 start, players are sniping at each other through the press, JR Smith is in danger of losing his newly-acquired starting position, and management is looking to shake up the roster.

Iman Shumpert is the team’s lone tradeable asset, and the Knicks are doing all they can to package him in a deal (with little success). The latest rumor is that New York approached the Boston Celtics about a blockbuster deal involving Rajon Rondo.

Per the NY Daily News and ESPN:

There are also reports of the Knicks talking to the Sacramento Kings about a deal for Shumpert. Coincidentally, Kings forward Jason Thompson is represented by Leon Rose, the agent for Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith and Chris Smith. The Knicks’ primary target is Rondo, Boston’s All-Star point guard who is recovering from knee surgery. The Knicks have been trying to trade Shumpert, Raymond Felton and Stoudemire in a complicated deal for Rondo but the Celtics haven’t shown much interest.

Sources did say the Celtics would be willing to take on Stoudemire’s contract if they could unload some of their longer deals, namely those of (Gerald) Wallace and Courtney Lee. The Knicks may be reluctant to take Wallace back because they’re hesitant to take on salary beyond the 2014-15 season.

The Knicks would obviously love to move Amar’e Stoudemire’s giant contract off their books, but that seems like wishful thinking at this point.

Things are further complicated by reports of a secret knee operation that Iman Shumpert underwent during the offseason. That being the case, it certainly feels like it’s only a matter of time until he’s dealt away.

been calling for this for 3 years now

  • the rain

If Danny Ainge does this I am done with the celtics for life

  • Chubachuchi

Just terrible management by Dolan. The team has never had direction even with their roster.

  • ablade

It can’t be true, Chris Broussard said earlier “Sources: Right now, Celtics have every intention of keeping Rondo & seeing if they can build around him”. Then again, Chris Broussard claims sources have told him everything, I bet he’s already posted “Sources: Rondo on the move”, then when he does/doesn’t move he’ll say “LOOK! See, I told you!”

    He has the best “sources”!

  • Bb4

i dont understand why they are not trying to get asik from the rockets since thats what they need

  • LLC#12

Outside of Melo, the Knicks don’t have a single player/combination of players who are worth what Rondo is.

  • Seth

This exactly. And if Shumpert is the main piece the Knicks are offering for Rondo, go away. Keep that bum Stoudemire away from me too.

  • spit hot fiyah

depends what rondo is worth to the celtics. if they are really trying to bottom out they might not want him. they might value expiring deal more than him right now. but if are looking at it strictly from a production stand point, then yes

  • Dfrance

Its sad when you’re lone tradeable asset is a defensive 2 guard that can’t shoot with 1 good knee.

  • KingBenjamin

Why would they do that? Asik would just pout again about not starting over Tyson Chandler.

  • Guest

Shumpert, Amare and Woodson’s Goatee for Rondo and Gerald Wallace’s dreadlocks and their expiring deal.

  • Mike Gilbert

I mean I guess it makes a LITTLE sense, because Amare’s contract is up a year before Gerald’s, but honestly this is wack

  • Mike Gilbert

    Dolan is so drunk

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

This actually backs up Broussard. It says in the article the Celtics want to keep Rondo and build around him. They just didn’t copy and paste the whole thing here from ESPN. When it references them taking on Stat’s contract it would be without rondo leaving, just unloading gerald wallace and lee.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

They coudln’t get asik without unloading STAT…and I don’t see the rocket’s going anywhere near him.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

I don’t see the celtics moving rondo… Unless he comes back early and starts tearing it up. They have a nice David Robinson situation now with an injured star they can tank with and gain back after a promising draft.

  • Jerry Alex

In other news…I want Kate Upton. But I don’t have the assets to get her either. smh. delusional Knicks.

    ** Completely off topic **

I love this website because of the thoughtful and well thought out comments. ( for the most part ) But this site takes forever in regards to basketball news compared to almost every other site. & Most the time they miss the headline.

    ** Back on topic **

Knicks stay disfunctional as always. None of their plans or roster moves never seem to make sense into a long term plan and almost never compliment each other. It’s always just a shot in the dark. Wonder if Dolan can do a Sterling-esque turn around. ( Sad when sterling is something your owner should strive for )

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Stoudemire for Wallace/Lee/Bass actually makes sense for both teams.
    .
Rondo on the other hand, there is nothing close to equal value coming from New York.

  • jessedogg

    what you said.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They can just keep Rondo on IR if they want to bottom out. Or get something better than anything the Knicks are offering.
    .
Plus the golden, “don’t trade stars within your own division” rule of thumb

  • bball knowledge

Agreed because Celtics are rebuilding and rondo might sit out the year and the Knicks need more pieces to make the playoffs at this point.

  • shockexchange

In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Rondo doesn’t need this soap opera that is the NY Knicks.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Shumpert is a better “shooter” than JR Bricks

  • 23

    True fan

  • bike

If Boston actually did trade Rondo for what the Knicks are offering, they would redefine tanking. They would actually have to come up with a new term.

  • Max

    Celticing.

  • Daniel Noel

We wanna keep bass. We’ll give them humphreys instead

  • Junior Taylor

It’s crazy that the Knicks are doing everything in their power to trade one of the few guys (along with Chandler and Prigioni) that actually cares about playing consistent defense.

  • danpowers

wallace to the knicks would make sense for the knicks? isnt his contract running till 2016? i mean, doesnt that jam the knicks cap for the 2015 summer and keep them from signing a quality free agent when melo and chandler will still be on the knicks payroll?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well i guess it depends what you plan on doing if you are the Knicks……judging by what has come out of James Dolan’s mouth as of late, winning is the one and only option. So spending extra money on Wallace (really, it won’t be extra if it doesn’t have to be, i’ll explain below) is worth the risk of actually getting more than 10 minutes of use out of your millions of dollars.
    .
the Knicks cap in 2015 loses flexibility assuming they don’t deal Wallace/Lee’s expiring deals before that summer. Wallace’s $10m expiring is a moveable contract, and so is Lee’s $5m — and in the mean time, they are two role players that can play big minutes if need be. Which you can’t say for Stoudemire. And their contracts are insured, if the worst happens and they get hurt. Another big issue you can’t say for Stoudemire.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nah, you want Humphries. His deal is expiring, and you sure aren’t winning a title by holding steadfast to Brandon Bass. Might as well capitalize on your ability to bottom out while freeing up cap space in the process.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    exactly.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    LOL that’s funny

  • Dfrance

    Aingeing

  • The Mauve Avenger

    Wait, seriously?

  • danpowers

i wallace and lee are movable and an update over stat right now, sure. i just dont have much faith in the knicks organization to get anything reasonable in return. see what they brought in for camby and novak. stats contract will also be movable next season for any team in tank mode and the sg and sf position are not exactly positions the knicks need to stack up.
besides that danny ainge doesnt seem to be too fond of moving rondo at this point anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

by moveable, what in the world do you think he would get the Knicks in return? and by waiting to move a contract that big, you are volunteering to take on multiple longer term contracts.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk
  • danpowers

or a good vet refusing to lose on a team attempting to tank + one long term bargage as the usual fee. idk, wallace + lee could be nice if things turn out as you put it into perspective, but if they also have to give up shumpert in that deal id say this is too much. then they better go for a package including rondo, but ainge would have to be really drunk to do that.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they aren’t giving up Shump just to get rid of Stoudemire. Shump is only included in a deal that includes Rondo.
    .
the Knicks are never going to tank. And no tanking team is going to take on Stoudemire without giving up multiple terrible contracts.

  • danpowers

@all possible ways how this could turn out: just wait and see how the knicks front office is going to make the worst of all available options. i see a panic move coming soon…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehhhh, it’s hard to put them in a worse position then they are already in. i tried telling you this when they signed Tyson Chandler.

  • danpowers

i wont argue anymore that chandler is overpaid and that this comes at the expense of a discount point guard “running” the show. well, the situation didnt look that bad last year and the outlook for the next two years isnt that dark as all contracts are coming off the books. it just seems that the coach lost the team and or just everything else is going wrong. as you said, dolan is making it unbearable for a superstar to play there – seems like this is not only going for superstars.

ps: thanks for ur shooting form advice by the way, it rlly got better by sticking to basics in shot training. especially this elbow rubbing on the hip bone felt really akward in the beginning but created a little change in shot motion that added range. at least it feels like this. but now im out with a chip fracture in my shooting hand thats why i didnt send footage to analyze yet. still thanks alot

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

my issue with Chandler was more about how fragile he is. Being injured for large chunks of seasons is a big issue. And when 2 of your 3 “superstar contracts” go down, you need a way to maneuver. New York just doesn’t have that because those “superstar contracts” – are, in just about every sense of the world, handcuffing the Knicks from making moves to at least temporarily better their situation. — and i haven’t even mentioned Andrea Bargnani….
    .
no doubt man, sorry to hear about the hand. shooting is about confidence and simplicity. happy you didn’t just take me as a quack, and actually put it to work. looking forward to hearing about any future progress.

  • Bb4

A 3 way trade, boston gets amare, knicks get gerald wallace, omer asik, houston gets courtney lee, iman shumpert and tyson chandler

  • JibbsIsBallin

Even if this trade happens, regardless of who gets traded to whichever team; neither team is going to win a ring anytime soon. Nor do I see either one of these teams going deep in to the playoffs. The East is controlled by Indiana Chicago and the current champs.

i just wanna point out, that converse banner is annoying as hell..

  • The Mauve Avenger

haha I just realized “shooter” might have meant shot choice. In which case, I agree.

Fracture in your shooting hand…. your punching backboards again??

I think you misunderstand the objective of Slam…its not a source for up to the second…is it truth is it false heresay its a forum for like-minded youths and the young at heart to talk about what has transpired or might be happening on the hoop scene. Whether slam reports it first is irrelevant. Also this is where we can hear about the Lebron Rules, Black Rick Flair, die-hard laker fan boys, NBK correcting our own opinions, SE’s preference for middle aged women and all the awesomeness that makes NBA/basketball fans the greatest sports fans in the world. Also Slam has a magazine out…

its funny how they dont seem to learn. it all kind of started when they got rid of ewing. since then they seem to repeat the same mistakes over and over again. besides dolan being an excentric coke head – do you have any explanation for that?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dolan literally thinks he can buy a championship. The rest just trickles down from there. It sucks to just blame things on the owner, but he’s the one he approves each decision, and drives the franchise’s direction.

  • danpowers

    “and drives the franchise’s direction.”
true, the problem is just that there isnt really a clear direction at all. it seems like they are not moving anywhere since the 2000s

  • danpowers

“happy you didn’t just take me as a quack,”
sure i wont, am glad about all help i can get. for now ill just hve to wait untill ill be able to go on with it. that fixes wont make me mark price but i think itll get good enough

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Won’t happen. But please feel free to take STEEZ and Gerald Wallace for Amare and a #1.
