Omer Asik Asked the Houston Rockets to Trade Him

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

It was evident from Day One that the Omer Asik/Dwight Howard experiment wouldn’t work out. The Houston Rockets, of course, tried to convince everyone that it would.

With his starting spot gone and overall playing time slashed, Asik has once again asked for a trade.

Per the Houston Chronicle:

Asik, a 7-0 center, made his trade request within the past 48 hours, a person familiar with the conversations said Thursday. The Rockets have no trade involving Asik, 27, in the works, with one individual saying a deal is more likely in months than in days. Asik declined comment, referring questions to his agent, Andy Miller, who also would not comment on the request.

“I would say the situation is very frustrating right now, and we’re trying to work through it,” Miller said. “For Omer, the objective has always been to continue to develop and grow as a player. That’s why we came to Houston in the first place. If that objective can’t be met, if we can’t get the right platform to grow and contribute as a player, it’s certainly frustrating.”

The Houston Rockets, sticking to the same stance they had at the beginning of the season, don’t appear to be quite yet ready to ship the big fella out of town. They have reportedly told his reps that a trade isn’t currently in the works.

Prio to Wednesday night’s loss in Philly, during which he played only four minutes off the bench, Omer Asik had started all 90 games since signing with H-Town as a free agent in 2012. He didn’t play at all last night against the New York Knicks, with head coach Kevin McHale claiming the center wasn’t feeling well.

The stalemate between the Houston Rockets and their unhappy big man continues. Omer Asik has two years and $20 million left on his contract.

OMER NOT HAPPY TAKE BALL WANNA LEAVE DWIGHT JERK WAH

  • Markus437

Omer Asik for Ryan Anderson makes too much sense right now

  • danpowers

in the short run for both teams, yes. but give davis another year to bulk up a little and gain weight so that he will be able to bang as a center. then the pelicans would be better off with anderson next to him. this season tho, the move would make sense for both teams. guess it would make more sense for new orleans to think future.

  • TR

Davis kind of looks like a decent stretch 4 himself. He obviously doesnt have Anderson’s range, but he seems comfortable facing up and shooting between 14-21 ft

  • Saleem Rainman

Why dont they trade him? He’s rotting on their bench anyways, they could get a good piece that can actually contribute if they do. How freaking stupid this whole situation has been, from the very beginning.

  • brothasdontsurf

NYK can definetly pick him up, as long as their willing to depart with the invaluable Chris Smith…

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what, but so many of you were sure Dwight/Asik would work….what happened?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

think about what you just said…….and how much more effective Davis would be doing that as a Center, with 4 shooters around him (Ryan Anderson being the most important piece of that puzzle).

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    nope, they can’t.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they are going to trade him. they will get more value when a team with a need at Center decides for sure they are making a run at the playoffs. Houston has been fielding offers since Dwight signed, they just haven’t received one worth pulling the trigger on.

  • brothasdontsurf

    Sarcasm chief

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you are the chief of sarcasm?

  • LakeShow

    You’re being sarcastic right?

No one thought that would work. Right??

  • okc123

anyone have a clue where asik might go? portland, lal and okc could use him. people have been talking the r.anderson swap for a while but idk if thats a good move for pels

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

A LOT of people thought it would work.

  • LakeShow

    *___*

  • bike

They probably want to hold onto him for a little while longer in the event Dwight suddenly becomes unhappy about something.

  • BIG ED

Asik is selfish more interested in playing time then winning championship.

  • Fat Lever

Let’s check in with the Sarcasm Chief to get a ruling.

  • jimmy

fuck trade dwight, keep asik and make a play at kevin love next summer. or at worst lamarcus alrdridge who played at the university of texas. dwight kills their offence, he cant shoot free-throws, hes a bad fit in houston.

  • LakeShow

He wants to prove himself as a player before riding coat tails to a championship it sounds like.

  • Frick advertising

This converse ad that pops up and takes up the whole screen is the worst thing in the world.

  • the_unknown

    let’s do it!!

  • thebossman15

Do you really think that team is winning a championship lmao, the fact that bargnani can shut dwight down and outplay him should tell u enough, but i guarantee theres no championship coming for that team. Especially when the guy has been working with 2 of the most skilled centers for months now and has shown absolutely no benefit from it. Arguably the most overhyped player ive ever seen in a long time

  • CraigandThem

Wow, on a douche roll? Keep going.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

a douche roll? is that a type of bread?

  • CraigandThem

    You’ll be here all week?

  • TR

I feel you..I mean Asik wouldnt do anything for them but clog the paint…I just dont know if I like Anthony Davis as my biggest guy having to hold it down every night against guys like Dwight, Marc Gasol,Cousins etc. He could do it, just seems like a lot to put on the guy every night.

  • CraigandThem

    Know who to step to.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that’s definitely a fair argument

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nah, week’s almost over, i don’t do weekends.

  • TR

On such a slow Friday at work, this is my biggest achievement…i hate my job

  • Trout

Send him to MIami for Haslem and Cole.

  • Busta213

That just made me laugh out loud maniaclly

  • Busta213

Lol, the rockets havent even proven they are an elite team for anyone to worry about “riding coat tails”
The reality is that Asik is putting his self interest first. Thats his right, I just dont get why folks are defending him for it when they were just killing Dwight for doing similar.

  • Busta213

Dwight is putting up 17pts 15rbs and 2.5bpg so far this season. If he puts up 3 or 4 more ppg, turns the ball over less and the Rockets end up with a decent seeding that wouldnt that be a good enough output from him?

  • LakeShow

I think it’s pretty obvious that a team with Howard and Harden is an elite team.

Championship worthy? Not looking like this year, but within a year or two, with another piece or two added, they can compete for a title.

Asik doesn’t want to play Center #2 for the next few years is the entire point here and a justifiable one.

  • LakeShow

Know who to step to brah. He runs this internetz thread.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he didn’t say that to me. he said it to himself. lol

  • thebossman15

dude, he doesnt know how to bang in the post, in the playoffs he will get exposed when teams slow them down and he tries to score off a post move..hack a dwight alone will destroy houston in the playoffs at the end of close games..in order for them to be a successful team dwight will need to learn how to actually get on the block and actually post up with the use of at LEAST 2 moves with a counter consistently, hes gonna have to improve his free throw shooting, and hes gonna have to be a demanding enough presence to command a double team in order to allow easy kickouts for three to james, lin, parsons, garcia etc. I dont look at stats to determine these types of things, you shouldn’t either.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    LOL

  • LakeShow

LOL, my bad, he’s keeping himself in check.

  • Caboose

    1. Asik for Seflosha and Perkins
    2. Asik for Nash and a 2nd rounder
    3. Asik and Lin for Marion, Vince, and Harris
    4. Asik for Diaw, Bonner, and a 2nd rounder

  • bigA

The thought of Dwight and Omer shooting jumpers always made me cringe.

  • grgeblck

If you are a good center and your team signed another good center, what would that make you feel? You would feel Asik right now.

  • grgeblck

Chris Kaman won’t be happy. lol.

  • burnt_chicken

I did. Or at least was really hoping. Loves the idea of tower lineups against smallball. Thought they had enough good shooters, rebounding, and interior defense to pull it off. And stand corrected. What happened? In the sample I saw, looked like neither Dwight nor Asik were talented enough post passers to make packed defenses pay. No real chemistry between them either.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It could have worked in a different system, given they were afforded enough time to build the chemistry you talked about. But not in Houston where the team is totally reliant on spacing, James Harden can’t lead the league in FT attempts if both of his bigs are no threat to stretch out the defense. .
And the other problem is that neither Asik nor Howard are quick footed enough to guard most of today’s PF’s. If Houston isn’t overwhelming on defense, the strengths implied by having Asik/Howard on the floor together are significantly out weighed by their weaknesses.

  • H- town

    Trade him for stat

  • Mack

Davis is not a center; he’s a forward with ridiculous length, ball handling skills and a great jump shot. Keep him mainly at the 4 and in certain line-ups a 5. Davis is not built for extended banging down low even if he added weight over a few years time.

And how do you figure this is only good in the short run? Asik would be a Pelican for a long, long time if this trade went down; he would give their frontcourt an enormous boost in a number of ways. Sure his contract is loaded at the end but once that runs out he would likely resign for a more reasonable price. Also, Anderson gives Houston a reliable, established stretch 4 who is familiar with Howard’s game.

  • melvo

Do you have adblock on Chrome?

  • Caboose

Funny, didn’t the Magic make the Finals before? Riding Dwight in the post? Yes. They did. Don’t be a moron.

  • Caboose

Honestly, this dude can’t be worth much in a trade right? EXTREMELY limited offensively, good not great defense, poor athleticism, and a horrendous contract. Paying $8-10 mil a year for a very good rebounder seems like overkill.

  • Evan Boland

Everyone on this site let stats make up their opinions. Good to know somebody else actually watches the games.

  • Evan Boland

They’re not an elite team. Harden and Howard both have terrible attitude problems.

  • Drig

Actually, Dwight wasn’t featured as the focal point of the O. I thought it was Hedo, Dwight’s D and Orlando getting ridiculously hot at the same time that propelled them to the Finals.

Hell, Howard himself came out and asked for him to feature more in the O.

  • Drig

As a Lakers fan, I’d rather have the 2nd rounder.

  • Mike From Spain

They sure look like they are underachieving…

  • Mike From Spain

Asik is heaps better than Kaman… and Nash is already retired. Pity about that second rounder

  • Mike From Spain

Asik for Sefolosha and Perkins? Sefolosha is a great 3 and D guy, who would the Thunder replace him with? I wonder if the Thunder do this, Sefolosha is brilliant for them, it looks like in terms of Win Shares, Asik alone does not compensate for the loss of Sefolosha.

  • Drig

Exactly. Might as well end up as the worst team for 2 years and get back up right to the top than blow up cap space for a middling player and end up stuck in purgatory for the next decade.

  • thebossman15

They didnt ride him in the post idiot, that team hit an outrageous amount of threes every game and set records while doing so.. @disqus_Wshl0Laafp:disqus is 100% correct, dwight was just a rebounder and defender, and who did they beat to get to the finals anyways that year lol, the bobcats/hawks/ and the celtics who were the only team actually worth mentioning and it was not because of howard they won that series. Dont take my word for it though
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdEO3gFy_9E

  • Max

Isn’t his contract only 2 more years?

  • Max

If they (Harden and Dwight) would just give a f*ck, the Rockets would be legit.

  • Smits#45

Well he’s 7 ft, not too old and more importantly he’s shown a desire to play and improve. That being said I agree with you on his contract but I still think there would be more than a few teams that could use him. Just not sure about what the Rockets want for him in return though…

  • Max

The year they went to the finals they beat Philly, Boston and Cleveland.
Dwight had 24 & 16 and 3 blocks in the first round.
    2nd round: 16 & 17 with 3 blocks.
Then against Cleveland he had 26 & 13.
How is that just being a rebounder and a defender?
People seem to forget how good Dwight was..

  • Max

    Is Ryan Anderson 100% tho?
If so you try to make that trade right away.

  • thebossman15

they didnt even play philly..once again dont look at the stats, if u watched the games u would see that he was simply scoring off lobs and simple dump ins which worked better against the weaker teams such as charlotte and cleveland, the lakers shut him down, he was always throwing fits and getting in foul trouble because he couldnt post up(see spurs playoff series game 4 of last year to refresh your memory). You are forgetting just how good of a team that magic team was..and stop taking what i say so literally, he averaged 17 and 11 the whole playoffs and the only thing he did consistently was defend and rebound, he got exposed against the lakers and you know it. He plays with no heart, intensity, or skill that will allow him to lead a team to the finals in the western conference and thats glaringly obvious

  • Struggle

Hey Knicks, if you are listening come up with a ridiculous trade offer for this guy

  • Busta213

Ive watched enough of Dwight to be patently aware of his strengths and weaknesses. I simply dont think his skill set is as terrible as you make out – he just needs to get his mind right.

Sure there are games when he struggles but they are not the rule night-in, night-out – which is why its useful to use stats to point out that “no – he doesnt spend the whole time sucking” as some people are prone to imply.

  • thebossman15

He doesnt have skill. His iq is low as hell, he cant even post up properly, he has no post moves..hes just super athletic. Im not the only who makes him out to be this bad, have you ever heard kareem/shaq/barkley talk about him? they say the exact same thing im saying, so if 3 of the best post players of all time have the same train of thought as myself i know im right because there opinion holds much more weight than anyone elses

  • Busta213

Obvious that they should be elite….but with all the doubt surrounding Dwight I think its reasonable to suggest that theres enough people who dont think their elite status is a given – they still have a lot to prove.

Hmmm, if youre really an elite team, shouldnt you be considered a contender?

Like I said thats his right, I just see a double standard is all.

  • Guest

Can you play the post better than dwight howard?

  • Guest

Challenge them to a shooting contest. They are in the nba.

  • bball knowledge

I completely agree the Rockets are not a championship team, the top 3 teams in the West are the Spurs, Thunder, and Warriors.

  • bball knowledge

Howard was never a post player it was pretty much Howard dunking and the Magic shooting 3 pointers which carried them to the finals that year.

  • Drig

Wasn’t it 3 years? I think it runs out in 2015……..

Man, according to you LeBron has almost zero skill. Ive never heard Kareem/Shaq/Barkley say that – usually the opposite. So will you now admit that youre wrong about Bron? ;o)

Kareem like most other Lakers was throwing dirt on Dwight this offseason. Id immediately discount that. Shaq enjoys f-ing with Dwight ever since he swagger-jacked his nickname. And Ive never heard Shaq call him low IQ – he just sets a higher bar for DH. A bar which scoring wise I dont expect him to reach, but I also dont think he needs to, to succeed.

Ive seen him do all the things you say he cant do. Again, his issues are more about his mentality rather than physical or skill-set-failings. Not about “heart” either.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

uhm, the Bucks are the only team that would say yes to that trade.

  • Mike Gilbert

idk about that, Rockets get an upgrade at the 4 and an upgrade at the 1 for their system. I guess getting Gerald Wallace too is a little over the top though

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Brandon Knight is not an upgrade

  • Mike Gilbert

regardless, it would make the Rockets a better team

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It makes them marginally better, by bringing in less than they are giving. If it doesn’t win them a title, they won’t take a “talent loss” in a trade for Asik.

  • LakeShow

Yeah, I agree. The Clippers look to be on the outside of those three.

  • thebossman15

Pretty sure lebron has nothing to do with anything I wrote about, you knee-pad that guy to the fullest lol. Did you notice one thing about the guys i mentioned in my post that broke down Howards game(clearly not)..they all happen to be the some of the greatest post players, and no Kareem didnt just come out of nowhere with his statements about Howard, he has always thought lowly of his game and has been caught on record countless times saying how he has no skills and relies on his athleticism. You probably think Griffin is skilled offensively too huh? all those dunks probably got you mesmerized.

Its not like any of the greatest wing players have got together and broke down Lebrons game on national television like they have dwights, you think shaq and charles are gonna give insight into being a great wing player? especially when the NBA is trying to market Lebron as the face of the league now that Kobe is near the end of his career im pretty sure no one would want to make headlines for bashing the guy except for dudes like skip bayless who dont fear the media.

If you need Shaq to tell you that Howard has low iq, then you have no basketball knowledge at all lmao..I considered breaking it down to you but that would just be a waste of my time, and i actually watched the guy play because Kobe is my favorite player and Howard was a laker last year so im not just attacking the guy for no reason.

  • Busta213

Lol – what you can only handle one topic at a time?
    1) I brought up Lebron because you talk out of the side of your mouth. When it suits you, the great players’ opinions are all that matters. But when it doesnt you ignore it (e.g. Magic isnt great enough for you?). You cant have it both ways son.

    2) Skip got tons of publicity (read: views) out of bashing Bron. But even he had to scale it back when he realized how retard** it made him look. But you keep on, by all means…

    3) You dont have to tell me youre a Kobe fan – I think he left a dab of his dna on your lips. Your main viewpoint on DH comes from that jacked-up hot mess of a season while Ive watched his game closely from his time in Orlando.

    4) Lol, I mentioned Shaq there because its not like Shaq was or needed to be the highest of IQ players (though he was a much better passer out of the double team than DH) – he was more aggressive.

    5) Bottom line is that he isnt a natural scorer but he is more than capable. No, it wouldnt matter if you broke it down, Ive seen him do everything you say he cant do – regularly. If he gets back to being the defensive force he was and upgrades his thought processes, he’ll be good.

  • thebossman15

Wow you people are just retarded. Just the other day people were trying to bag on me for bringing in kobe into an argument irrelevantly but when it comes to Lebron its ok? Double standards!?!?! lmao and alright man, if kobe left a dab of his dna on me i can only imagine the litres of gravy(take it as you may) this guy has unloaded on you.

One of the funniest things is how you think im the only one who doesnt think Lebron is as good as he is made out to be, like slamonline is maybe .000000001 of the basketball world, your the type of dumass to have no actual playing experience and simply watch espn and refer to stats and have been a bench rider all your life if you cant see the visible flaws of lebrons game.

In terms of Dwight no my main viewpoint doesnt come from one season u idiot, it comes from watching the guys free throw percentage decline steadily every year, from his game having never progressed past putbacks and alley oops, and him being however many years into his career and still not knowing how to seal his defender properly and get the ball and score, like say demarcus cousins(demarcus is in his 3rd year btw and has been doing this since he got in the league). When i think of a skilled post player i think of guys like Bynum, Cousins, the gasol’s, lopez etc. You told me his basketball iq wasnt questionable but in your post above you say he needs to upgrade his thought processes so clearly you dont what the hell your talking about. And when did i ever say he wasnt capable, no shit he has potential hes the most athletic center in the league, he simply hasnt shown himself to be reliable on offense, your a flat out idiot if you think so and im no longer addressing that.

  • Busta213

You make stuff up some times, huh?
    1) They did play Philly that postseason
    2) DH put up 20ppg 15rpg for the playoffs and was the Magics leading scorer
    3) DH was the primary reason the Magic were an elite defensive team (sharing a front court with defensive sieves Hedo, & ‘Shard)
    4) Noone denies that DH played poorly against the Lakers, but the Magic dont make the finals without Dwight putting up 40 & 14 in game 7 vs the Cavs.

  • Busta213

    1. Donut, I only brought Bron up to expose the fallacy in your “well if these great players say it, it must be true” argument
    You people? Im one person.

    2. On that topic, I dont think you responded to the post about how the fact Lebron has becoming an elite % jumpshooter amongst volume scorers would constitute an actual skill.

I dont think Lebron is perfect, but I can only laugh at Kobe nut huggers who hate him because his jumper isnt as pretty as Kobes.

    3. Lol @ you boasting about your playing skills online. Im pretty sure youre fat and out of shape. Im not worried about you.

    4. See thats the thing, people hype about more polished offensive players like Al Jeff, Cousins, Bynum and Brook, but they dont give you as much as Dwight does overall, they simply dont. Sometimes not even on O where theyre supposed to be the sh!t.
Id put Gasol on a different level from that bunch – at least I wouldve a couple of years back, but he isnt that guy all the time anymore

    5. See, if you’d watched him in Orlando, youd know that he constantly got down the floor and was able to seal people in the paint and finish. Youd also know that even when he got to the spot with good position, Jameer Nelson was more likely to jack up a shot because dude was sh!tty at throwing entry passes.

    6. His basketball IQ isnt the best, nor is it the problem. A different outlook and some maturity would improve him. He wouldnt need to learn any new moves or skills that I havent seen him utilize many times before to reach that point. Even if he doesnt change hes still better than the likes of Bynum. The freethrow issues again are likely mental, more than physical.

posting here while your comment is in moderation

  • Busta213

    1) “I wish you would call me donut in real life”??? Spoken like a true internet tough guy! Hahaha, stop being a dumbass.

    2) Imbecile, I presented you with information that showed that you were incorrect about Brons skill level. Shooting is a fundamental basketball skill in case you hadnt noticed, and he was shooting at an elite level.

    3) Lol, why would I be mad at a muppet? …and when did I ask for your life story? Im SURE everyone on this site is a D1 prospect or future NBA star.

Prove it or STFU. Noone wants to hear internet noise otherwise.

    4) Typical laker fan, overrating Bynums “prime”. You think Im nuts but think I should get excited about centers like Brook and Bynum who cant give you double-doubles on the regular.

    5) Spoken like someone who only really watches the Lakers play. And really…….only paid attention to Kobe

    6) He knows the moves. Its like J.James said about Yao. “I cant guard Yao – he only thinks I can”

6b) Sorry to burst your bubble but Hack-a-dwight is rarely truely successful. Fouling Dwight puts his team in the penalty and gets opposing bigs in foul trouble.

6c) Despite the poor free throw shooting, his advanced shooting stats (adj to incl. ffs) are still very good, so putting Dwight at the line isnt as bad as most people thing.

  • thebossman15

    1. Idiot, you are calling me a “true internet tough guy” because i called you out for being one..how does that make any sense to you? if you called me a n**** and i said i wish you would say it to my face, would that also make me the internet tough guy? lmao you clown.

2.you didnt present any information lol, bruh WHO is your supplier, like you really think hes a great shooter. You stated that bron had a high field goal percentage..no sh*t dumass he scores like 80 percent off cuts/fastbreak etc it takes common sense to understand why his field goal percentage is so high.

3.First im a “donut” now im muppet lol, i feel like im arguing with one of the nerds that play video games in the corner during lunch at my school your insults are so soft. And as far as my recruitment goes, what do you wanna know? want me to give you my name/age/where i live, take pics of my mail/phone call history with coaches lol like wtf, why dont i flip this around and ask you for all your info, believe me or not idgaf, i see absolutely no point in lying about that sort of thing.

4/5. Not even a lakers fan, you idiot. Kobe is my favorite player and i want him to get his 6th because theres no one else more deserving imo, players like him only come around once every so many years. Bynum put up 18-12-2 his last healthy year in ’11, thats a consistent double-double idiot.

    6. You quoted jerome james, you claimed hack a dwight isnt effective and god knows if you think it wont be effective, during the playoffs as well, and then you say advanced stats defend his free throw shooting, in that order lol, arguably the most retarded triad of comments ive ever seen…your out of your mind and i refuse to argue with someone who is clearly an idiot, dont bother responding im done with you

  • Busta213

    1) The implication was that I wouldnt be willing to say it to your face. Why? ‘cos youre a scary internet tough guy! Lol, please!
    2) I said Brons JUMPSHOT rated elite amongst all volume shooters. Try to keep up
    3) Lol, still dont care. (tho for future reference youtube reels?).
    4) Youre a Kobe fan boy – that makes you much worse than a Laker fan. Much much worse
    5) Thats one season. Now go look at how many other seasons Bynum has done that. Then consider how often hes likely to do it again. Its not impressive…..
    6)
Was the J.James quote incorrect? Nope it was both amusing and correct.
Does Dwight have a high efg% despite his awful ft%? yes he indeed does.
There are doubts surrounding the effectiveness of the hack tactic. It works sometimes, but isnt infallable.
p.s. I keep my insults juvenile because theres little value in being rude. Have a good day.
