Danny Ainge Says Rajon Rondo Not Close to Returning

Boston Celtics GM Danny Ainge threw cold water on speculation that point guard Rajon Rondo was nearing a return to action. Ainge says Rondo isn’t close to being game-ready. Per the Boston Globe: “I don’t think he’s close,’ Ainge said. ‘I don’t think it’s gonna happen in the next few weeks. We’re not on pins and needles about it. We’re being very cautious with Rondo. He’s still got a little bit of a limp. He needs to get his strength back.’ Ainge said Wednesday that Rondo will meet with Dr. James Andrews, who performed Rondo’s knee surgery, within 10 to 14 days. The Celtics guard has not been cleared for 5-on-5 basketball. ‘He’s just not himself yet, but he’s getting there and he’s pushing himself to get there,’ Ainge said. ‘Listen, we’re going to be very cautious with him and make sure he’s right before he comes back. There’s just a little bit of a limp still, and he’s got to get that strength in his knee back to 100 percent before we’ll let him back out on the court.’ [...] The Celtics boss also said he was more concerned with development of the team’s younger players than with wins and losses or the early season standings, mentioning Jared Sullinger, Avery Bradley, and Jordan Crawford as players he was particularly interested in monitoring.”

This whole situation just screams tank to me every time I hear about it.

I like how Rondo has assumed almost an assistant coach’s role. It shows he is dedicated and it builds a good relationship with Brad Stevens. They don’t need to rush him back

For real. Especially seeing how fast Westbrook came back.

Funny thing is the Celts are top of the Atlintic Division right now.

And then you look at their division and you’re like what da f?

Take as much time as you need… They have the whole season to develop the players they want to keep (Olynyk, Favarani), and package off the ones they want to move (Humps, Wallace). If they manage to land a center (like a Varejao) for a push to win the division, then I could see Rondo coming back maybe in February. It would nice see how they look with Rondo, Courtney, Green and Bass and a big of similar talent. Crawford and Bradley look great together, and would prefer Jordan to come off the bench as a PG to spell Rondo, who is going to be rusty, and possibly be off a half-step for awhile, as he gets into true game shape.

Yes. But also it screams, “On January 15 we can trade Rondo for other team’s free agent signings and if we play him before then he might not look so good with injury rust and non-HOF teammates fumbling his passes, thus depreciating his trade value, so we’ll probably debut him right before then, if at all.”

The sad part is that this team could finish like 10 games under .500 and STILL potentially be the 4th seed in the East.
