Lionel Hollins Wants Another Head Coaching Opportunity

After getting let go—well, “not retained”—by the Memphis Grizzlies last summer, Lionel Hollins has yet to be offered a head coaching job in the NBA. And after some time off, he wants back in. Via ESPN: “As sabbaticals go, the one Lionel Hollins has been on the last few months has been pretty nice, but the former Memphis Grizzlies coach said in an extended interview with ESPN.com that he is ready to get back to work. … ‘I believe I’ve established myself as a head coach and I’d like another opportunity to show that [my success] wasn’t a fluke,’ Hollins said. ‘I feel like I’ve proven I can take a young team and develop it, then sustain what I’ve done by what I did in the last five years in Memphis.’ Hollins was let go by the Grizzlies despite winning a franchise-record 56 games and leading Memphis to its first Western Conference Finals appearance last season. The reasons were philosophical in nature, after a season in which Hollins didn’t always publicly embrace the moves or direction set by the Grizzlies’ new ownership and front office. … ‘I was antsy when training camp started. But once they started playing, I was comfortable not being there. I get to watch a lot of basketball on TV. And now I’ve gotten to re-evaluate what I like to do and what I want to do.’”

Oh Lionel… are you sure you really want to coach a team for another organization that throws away its best chance ever of winning a “gold ball” because it saves a couple of greenbacks?

    Are you sure?

  • TriggaMan

Respect to Lionel, he is a classy dude and a stand up guy. Instead of tucking his tail like most coaches he went after ownerships neck. I’m still thinking what if gay didn’t get traded, would they of went to finals?

  • Mack

RAPTORS NEED THIS GUY! Masai Ujiri make it happen please

what would be different to woody then? hollins got fired for a reason

  • Jake

    Denver needs him. Fire Shaw.

  • TriggaMan

Hollins got fired for publicly disagreeing with the Rudy gay trade, not because he was a bad coach. The man won56 games and went to the wcf

  • danpowers

i didnt say he was a bad coach neither do i think that. but he has his limitations when it comes to offensive sets and offensive adjustments. woodson is a solid defensive coach with a limited understanding of the game on offense, too.

maybe the fresh wind of change of hollins could bring some short term change in ny and generate a handfull of wins – but at the end of the day he has more or less the same qualities and limitations that woodson has. hollins might be slightly “better” but the situation in ny would stay the same in principle.

the knicks problems are structural anyway and i doubt that a coaching change would change much at this point.

  • Heirforce

yes, as I raps fan I could not agree more.

  • KingBenjamin

Both you and TriggaMan are idiots, Hollins wasn’t even fired his contract expired and ownership chose not to renew it because of the differences they had.

  • TriggaMan

One in the same my dude. I would rather get fired lol

  • shane

I think he would be perfect for the Jazz

  • TriggaMan

I get the comparisons that’s true but Hollins played his cards well. He has 2 low post guys. And Tony Allen on the wing, not Melo, he had no choice but to run the same slow sets everytime. The thing I like about Lionel is that he don’t have a coaching style, he coaches based on what he has, if the knickd hired him I think he would do a great job personally

Hopefully he’s still available at the end of the season for Utah, and can start fresh with a young core. And a top pick (Jabari Parker preferably)! But if not he could help Sacramento, or Washington!

Hey Lionel you can come and coach my team no problem.. the second Nate Robinson stepped out on the floor today, Dwane Casey saw this 5’10 weapon and nearly sh*t a brick.. and couldn’t find one player on our roster to stop him nor did he have any defensive plays drawn up it was so sad to watch.. lol Casey baffles me sometimes.. he has to be one of the worst coaches we’ve ever had on the Raptors in a long time..

  • Fitzy

yeah right Brad Stevens is our coaching prospect.

  • Cameron

Before the season I would’ve rather had Hollins over Brad Stevens. With that being said, I’d like to see how Stevens does this season and give him next season. I don’t have very high hopes for him anyway.

  • Fitzy

No one knew Stevens was even an option when we were looking for a coach. Having said that I can certainly see the reasons why and he was also up on my list of wants mind you if we get Hollins odds are KG and pierce would also still be sporting green. I think he has already surpassed expectations to this point and will continue to impress.

My hopes are through the roof for him and I hope he’s a Boston mainstay for a while, Danny Ainge didn’t hire this guy to fire him two years later. He’s gonna be here for a while. We know we haven’t given him much to work with.

be happy everytime we lose a game it puts us in great position to nab King Wiggins or any of the other potential superstars in this loaded draft. do you want to be mediocre forever with your 2 best players being demar derozan and rudy gay?? I love what casey is doing right now

  • RKJ92

You must not know me very well.. I’m all for the Tank World Order! The fact that we have the ultimate tank commander coach in Dwane Casey makes me hopeful that come draft time we drove our tank into a top 5 pick ;) let’s just keep hoping tank commander Casey keeps Amir glued to the bench like today, and finds more reasons to bench Jonas just because he feels like it as per usual.. TwO.

  • danpowers

to me thats the same, hollins wanted to stay there but they didnt extend his contract and their differences were at least partially about offensive sets.

the guy was not retained by Memphis for a reason. i wouldn’t want him coaching any team competing for a title. maybe a middle tier playoff team, but nothing more than that.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i just gotta say, Demar Derozan and Rudy Gay could very well be the worst possible veterans for Wiggins to learn the NBA under. Just for whatever that’s worth.

how do you know he coaches based on what he has?
his only other stint as a coach was for a single season in 2000 (when they were still in Vancouver) accompanied an 18-42 record.
last season, specifically in the playoffs, Hollins showed glaringly that he either could not, or was not willing to make adjustments.
    – for example, he did nothing about Zach Randolph killing them defensively against the pick and roll against San Antonio. He just let the team sit pat, while Randolph got roasted like a hog.
    – he went away from running the offense through Marc Gasol, specifically again, against San Antonio. Despite Conley and Randolph struggling mightily, he made no adjustment to find a better solution

The guy just showed no willingness to adjust, off the court, or on it. I wouldn’t want him coaching any team honestly.

  • RKJ92

Oh I couldn’t agree more.. I want the whole team to be dismantled, and gutted (except Jonas, and Amir if he settles for a more reasonable contract) its time the Raptors build a new identity under the new management, and escape the Bryan Colangelo era.. The Bargnani trade was an awesome start, now they just need to continue by trading Gay, DeRozan, and Lowry. Dropping Gray, Novak, Augustine, Buycks, Stone and go from there!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i actually don’t mind Derozan long term. I think he’s all about improving, and he doesn’t have the type of ego that can kill a team. he is just a little bit wild, but most all great teams have that.

  • RKJ92

The only things that bug me when I watch DeRozan play are that he doesn’t play defense (he plays when he wants to Melo style) and is virtually a black hole but I’m hoping that’s just because of Tank Commander Casey’s system.. There’s deff hope with DeRozan considering he’s only 24 so I’m honestly praying for him if he survives the trade deadline.. And wtf is with DeRozan never getting ref calls its pissing me off now..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, i think a lot of it is that Derozan has had no reason to play defense. not necessarily the system, but the toxic environment and personalities within that franchise are more something i’d blame. i mean his best player/teammate has not played or even cared about defense since that last season with Bosh.

  • TriggaMan

I think if they had gay to relieve some offensive pressure they would of won that series. The spurs pick and roll made the heat, best d in league in my opinion look silly. I agree with you about taking the offense away from gasol, tht was dumb. I heard him explain his philosophy in an interview some where, how he coaches a team based off personal unlike dantoni who ciaches the same way no matter what

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

If they would have kept Gay, in all likelihood, they would had a worse regular season (they improved after trading him, significantly so) and been ousted early. All of Memphis’ playoff series wins in the last 8 years, have come with Rudy Gay either hurt, or on a different team. I see no reason to believe a 43% volume shooter who is average at best defensively, helps you against the Spurs.

Mr.Hollins watching the game on TV might be your best bet, you lost your job not because you were a bad coach but because you thought Rudy Gay was your whole team.
In any job you can’t embarrass your boss by publicly criticize them. As Toronto found out Rudy Gay is a one way player, since they booted him the team is about 13-3 and leading the division.
You hang your hat on Rudy and it cost you a job. You also had Davis on the bench doing well and for some reason you would not play him, also you booted Vasquez out of town even though he would of just got better and would of made you a great back-up (oh wait he was already a good back-up as rookie) you traded him to New Orleans.
we all know the rest of the story.
So yea, you probably are better off on your couch…coach, you didn’t make good decision because you were fascinated by a selfish player like Rudy gay, you thought you needed him to win so you got all bent out of shape about that.
