Memphis Grizzlies Reportedly Shopping Zach Randolph

Z-Bo’s dream to retire in a Memphis Grizzlies uniform doesn’t appear likely, according to the latest trade chatter.

The Grizz are said to be shopping Zach Randolph, as they look to shed salary and improve their outside shooting.

Per Bleacher Report:

“Several sources said the Grizzlies are currently shopping power forward Zach Randolph, and two of them are hearing there’s a destination and main trade piece involved: New Orleans and stretch-4 Ryan Anderson, who’s averaging a team-high 21.7 points per game on 47.7 percent shooting from three-point range. ‘A trade centered around Randolph and Anderson should happen down the line this season,’ one source said. Randolph wants to stay put; he told ESPN.com last month that he would ‘like to retire (in Memphis).’ In fact, he’s so committed to the city that on Wednesday the NBA presented him with the November Kia Community Assist Award in recognition of his charitable efforts and contributions in the community.

But Randolph is 32—seven years older than Anderson—and the Grizzlies likely don’t want to pick up his expensive $16.9 million player option for 2014-15. They’re a capped-out team that sees promise in younger power forward Ed Davis, who’s a restricted free agent. On the Pelicans’ front, they’d get a player in Randolph who would command the low post and help them push further forward in the competitive Western Conference. When Anthony Davis returns in a few weeks from a non-displaced fracture in his left hand, his All-Star ability to pick-and-roll and spread the floor, as well as defend the paint, would complement Randolph’s interior game.

Anderson is compelling because of his scoring versatility at 6’10″ in the low- and mid-post, pick-and-pops and spot-ups from downtown, which would complement Grizzlies center Marc Gasol’s inside game. Anderson is also an underrated offensive rebounder. Through 21 games, the 10-11 Grizzlies are one of the worst scoring teams and are dead-last in three-pointers made (97). Anderson is leading the league in that category per game (3.7), 0.3 more than each of the Splash Brothers, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.”

Makes sense. Need bring the darell up to speed. The grizzlies hit that plateau like the hawks with JJ Horford Smoove and Marve Will

  • Dfrance

Had no clue Ryan Anderson was putting in that kind of work.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Memphis gets – Pau
    Milwuakee gets – Z-Bo
    Lakers get – Ilyasova/Udoh/Ridnour

  • spit hot fiyah

i don’t do this if i’m NO. anderson is perfect together with the brow

  • JML-G

already thought my hope of Z-Bo staying in Memphis was utopic :(

  • TR

I like that…Ilyasova is nice if he can get it together, and Ridnour would make the Lakers the deepest pg team in bball history

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well lol, all their PG’s are hurt

  • LakeShow

Not bad, even though I hate Udoh.

Ilyasova would probably ball like a boss under D’Antoni.

I don’t want Pau to leave, but it looks like he wants to leave, and it’s best for the Lakers financially.

  • LakeShow

Phewwie… those are nice shooting numbers.

  • Stepfan Raiford

See’s promise in Ed Davis? Are you kidding me?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I figure it solves two necessities and one desire. LA doesn’t lose Pau for nothing, while getting a long term asset or two without hurting future flexibility. Memphis rids themselves of Z-Bo while staying competitive, also opens up cap room next summer, and Milwaukee gets the piece they need to sneak into the playoffs as their owner desires.

  • http://twitter.com/niQknacks niQ

Wow, they just keep shipping people out from their (what was it) WCF team?

  • shawnkemp4prez

We (Grizz fans) are all sad to see this. I honestly think we’d rather lose with Z-bo than win with someone else. He means that much to the community.

  • danpowers

This is the kind of headline reminding us that the nba is nothing but business. I get why the grizzlies have to do that, but ill hate to see z-boo wear another jersey

  • house

oh god. how I wish my Bulls were shopping Boozer. I’d love to see Zach on my Bulls in place of that bumbling one trick pony Boozer…. I can dream I guess….

  • brothasdontsurf

Z-Bo is the only dude to really come out and show Memphis love, yet the organization just cares about the money.

  • Fitzy

I feel like john hollinger is wrecking the grizzlies with his advanced analytics.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i know right! like, wth! you got us further than we’ve ever gone! it was the worst

  • sheed33

This is what happens when a franchise does not trust in Basketball expertise and integrity (Lionel Hollins) that focusses on dfense, rebounding, hard work and hustle plays but instead follow the crazy ambitious “it’s all in the statistics” guys.

  • DALE WITTIG

It’s pretty sad to see these stat geeks take a team that made it to the Western Conference Finals and strip it down to one that won’t even make the Playoffs. The team that made it to the third round was essentially the one that existed before the new ownership took over, except for the absence of Rudy Gay (and I very much doubt that it was the Gay trade that made this run possible.)

  • Nick Holden

Ermm why would the Pelicans ever do this? Anderson is playing great and he complements Davis nicely, no way they’re taking on the ageing Randolph and his huge contract with Anderson’s contract being very reasonable. Would the trade even make them better at this very moment? I doubt it. If Anderson is to be traded it is because they want to play Davis at PF and would therefore need a center in return (I’m also not doing the much talked about Asik for Anderson deal from the Pelicans’ perspective)

  • Evan Boland

    Sad

  • Evan Boland

He’s done. We need to rid ourselves of his decaying a** ASAP.

  • Evan Boland

    They would not be competitive.

  • LakeShow

    Show some respect.

  • LakeShow

Yeah because Pau is such a down grade from Z-Bo.

  • dannyb

This is sad. They had such a great team and just needed one more piece to really take it to the next level. I know it’s a small market but they had so many great pieces who all gave an s-load of effort on the court. What a shame.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

have you watched a lick of eastern conference basketball this year or nah? 38-44 comfortably gets a team into the playoffs. you don’t have to be “competitive” – you just have to be a step above terrible.
    .
unless you mean Memphis? — are the competitive right now? they look like a dumpster fire. Plus, Pau and Marc is a more daunting front line than Zbo and Marc, it’s not like Zbo is a 20-10 big anymore. And defensively he’s by far the worst player on their entire team.

Get out of the basement and get a life.

  • Ugh

As sad as this may be for the Grizzlies, one good thing will come of this: in three years people will realise that teams built via advanced stats save money but don’t win championships and that Hollinger’s metrics don’t either. And, finally, people will stop paying attention to this rubbish and go back to watching games.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Still too bright!

  • i_ball

Loyalty goes both ways. That’s why the Lakers are THE franchise and the Spurs have been doing it for so long

  • candlewood jay

Allenp and Eboy already have lives.
    Don’t you want that?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh that’s cute. You actually think you know something about me based on this comment section don’t you?

  • candlewood jay

Okay, tell us about your imaginary work and imaginary family in Arizona.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

That’s ok. I’d rather not tell you about my family. But thanks for showing interest. It’s so lonely in this basement!

  • Evan Boland

    I was talking about Memphis.

  • candlewood jay

    I could tell.
I’m just trying to help, buddy.

  • Evan Boland

If Memphis traded Z-bo for Pau they would get A LOT worse.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Word. Well my opinion of that is above. My bad for the initial misunderstanding

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh well, thanks! You should become a detective if your obviously much higher quality of life than mine has time for that sort of thing. You must have learned all about me by reading my comments while being super busy right? Probably read them while sky diving or running from bulls in Spain huh? What’a world it must be out there.
“No way this guy can know and talk about all this bullsh*t and still have a life” – sounds like the type of an assumption someone with a ton more to live for would surely make. Wouldn’t you agree?

  • candlewood jay

Okay your defense mechanism is on again.
I’m leaving you alone now. Just try to spend time on other things okay?
There are more to life than this comments section. Always remember that.
    Adios Amigo.

I was just asking a question, didn’t know how to be more concise while still making the point. But that’s cool, my email won’t ding again, that I’m grateful for. Later gator.

  • candlewood jay

    The truth hurts huh?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol you can do better then that

  • LakeShow

Nah, Z-Bo has taken a step back also.

He is not any better defensively, he just has a better defensive team around him. He’s slightly better offensively. Slightly.

  • LakeShow

    yep..

He knows about Allenp and Eboy and he’s pretending like he isn’t someone who checks out the comment boards too. The only difference is when you do it you actually provide commentary. I’m no better than him, I mostly just read. But I also am on this site every d*mn day reading every d*mn comment. Apparently so is he. F*cking people man.

  • Initbruv

Dude how is it you know about Allenp and Eboy? You’re all about the Slam comment board life too. What are you doing? Feeding starving kids in Africa? GTFOH

  • Evan Boland

Man, I wish I could bet you on this. Lakers would be sooo much better with a tough Z-bo than Gasol. It’s fact.

  • Evan Boland

You really think Pau would result in more wins for Memphis than Z-bo? Stats aside, the toughness factor? I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree.

  • Max

It would be a sad season if this happens.

  • bigA

why are you behaving like a little bitch?

  • jkinghoops80b

z-bo got underated game. he’s physical and has low post moves.

  • Ganchan

Not a bad trade scenario. The only thing that may thwart the idea is that Milwakee is in prime tank position at the moment and could arguably get a franchise player next year for a lot less than 16M or whatever Zbo will cost.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

right. if allen iverson was subjected to this efficiency then he wouldnt play and we would never have seen lb for lb greatest hooper not athlete

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    no personal attack

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Well I don’t think it makes much of a difference either way, they are a 2nd round playoff team at best. I just think Gasol doesn’t hurt, and adds the potential for Memphis to improve as an overall team. Since he’s a better passer and defender than Randolph.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah, it’s pretty normal for someone to flame at me like that from time to time. I appreciate your honesty, and I’m not actually judging anyone whether they comment or read the comments all the time, just trying to put a mirror up for homie to peer into.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

I don’t understand. Explain. Is Zbo’s charity work that much. I never knew that

  • initbruv

Much obliged, I will do so.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

They used the Bleacher Report as their source. Might as well have used my twitter has a source for the next article, both sources are just saying nonsense.

  • Mike Gilbert

it’s not just about money though. By the time Gasol comes back they could be as many as 10 games out of the playoffs. It make sense to trade Randolph if they can get quality assets to improve the future of the team

  • brothasdontsurf

That was what the whole “money” part was about dude. Dump his contract for more logistical assets. Trading Z-Bo would be such a devastation to team chemistry though, he is one of the only dudes who can get an easy layup at any point in a game.

  • Interdico Scriptor

On a totally unrelated matter – Glen Rice? Tim Hardaway? Isaiah Thomas? WTF. 90s flashback dude…

  • coalminds

After watching them diss Hollins I look forward to seeing the Grizzlies regress every season.

As a Warriors fan I don’t understand how Udoh is even in the NBA. He really has zero skills.

  • davidR

we drafted him over monroe. sigh. at least it led to us getting david lee, and eventually bogut

  • JL

AI was actually pretty good when he got to Denver and had good players. When he’s alone he has to force shots. I’m not saying he should have, but just that he could be good (efficiency wise) in the right situation.

  • JL

This has got to be made up!? Why would the Pelicans want to get older? They already did the stupid trade for Holiday (expensive and overrated), and the dumb signing of Tyreke Evans (who they didn’t need). I guess he was Gordon insurance, but they’re not like contenders. Plus they go and traded away Noel and their 2014 pick. If I was a Pelican fan I’d be pissed.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

If iverson had shaq and not kobe… today iverson have 3 rings possibly 4 or 5 because you know he and shaq wouldnt have chemistry issues.. practice.. no only the results.

  • JL

Ha! Yeah him and Shaq would make for a hilarious team. Two supremely talented players who didn’t need to practice. Sign up Lenny Cooke straight from Middle school.

Though him and Kobe would make it work. They are both winner mentality type players. That’d be actually a scary combo. Where the other players on their team might as well be Kendrick Perkins clones.

Lol john hollinger was signed in January of that year, hardly him getting you there. He forced Lionel hollins out of there by confronting him about his coaching style. They even switched to a more uptempo offence this year as hollinger requested and it showed in their record they weren’t built for it. Now he’s gonna force z-Bo out. Lol “you got us further than we’ve ever gone.” You act like he’s on the floor

  • Interdico Scriptor

Not big on Bleacher, are we?

Ehh they have a couple pro beat writers but in the trade sources department, we’ll just say they lack any credible evidence to fall back on

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

There was a pretty big trade that resulted on a drastic improvement from the team… That is what I’m referring too. Didn’t think anyone would be naive enough to take the statement literally.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    he’s pretty damn good defensively.

  • LakeShow

    Tough Z-bo vs tough Gasol?

I mean sure, Soft Gasol Z-Bo.

It all depends on when Pau gets his head and body right. They are comparable at this point.

  • Dagger

Almost every team in the league now uses advanced stats to evaluate their rosters and potential additions/subtractions. The Miami Heat more than most: it’s one reason they play the way they do.

You’re looking at one big name in the advanced analytics crowd (Hollinger), rather than seeing the overall picture. Advanced stats are now integral to the league and are here to stay.
