Mike D’Antoni Disagrees With Kobe Bryant on Lakers’ Start

According to Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers sputtered to start the season (going 10-9 without their superstar, and 0-2 since Bean’s return.) Not so, says Mike D’Antoni. The head coach thinks the Bryantaires did just fine. Per ESPN: “After Kobe Bryant downplayed the Los Angeles Lakers’ modest success in going 10-9 without him, saying Monday, ‘It’s not like we were gangbusters before,’ coach Mike D’Antoni came to the defense of Bryant’s teammates. ‘I have to disagree with that,’ D’Antoni said after Tuesday’s shootaround in advance of the Lakers’ game against the Phoenix Suns. ‘We were 6-2 in the last eight [games before Bryant's return] and I thought we played extremely well, winning three [in a row] on the road. … So, that’s not quite right. I’m really proud of what the guys did.’ Whether the difference in opinion has more to do with Bryant’s elevated standards as a five-time champion than it does with him disparaging his teammates is open to interpretation. But even D’Antoni had some critical remarks for the team Tuesday. ‘Our defense is fairly good,’ D’Antoni said of the Lakers, who are 19th in defensive efficiency, allowing 102.4 points per 100 possessions. ‘We can be better, always be better, but in the paint we’re awful and we’ve got to get tougher.’”

Off topic, but anyone who thinks Melo and Kobe on the same team would work is completely out of their mind.

In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Horry Jr’s “elevated standards as a five-time champion” has more to do with being aligned with “exceptionally more talent than the rest of the L” than with Horry Jr’s individual talent.

  • Sean Superstar Juan

I will say that he looked pretty good in game 2, only taking 11 shots for 20 points.

He didn’t look bad at all. The Shock Exchange wishes he had waited until mid January to come back though. That would have given him ample to time to recover and come back at his best.

Because both of their egos as the “top dog” are so high neither would be willing to take a backseat to the other. Not saying Melo won’t come here to LA but I’m not on the bandwagon that it’ll work.

He must not be that big a Horry JR fan or something? Who knows :S I mean you would THINK someone would know the greatest ROLEplayer of all time..

  • LakeShow

    Magic
    Bird
    Doc
    Shaq
    Wilt
    Kareem
    West
    LeBron

Do you recognize any of those names…

  • LakeShow

Melo has always looked at KB as a mentor. That would help the relationship. Plus it’s not like Melo has won his way like Kobe has.

He would be a huge idiot if he didn’t understand it’s Kobe’s team. I don’t think he’s that stupid.

    It could work. Could…

  • manu081

Lol come on? Melo & Kobe together is just not a great duo. I’d rather try to chase down Kevin Love LaMarcus Aldridge Kyrie Irving. Melo isn’t taking a back seat I agree with T-Ray defs not on that bandwagon.

I mean offense isn’t our problem, it’s defense and mainly guarding quick athletic guards. Melo isn’t going to help there so rather pass on him & build with some solid role players (Lowry, re-sign Wes Johnson, bring in an athletic big man that can defend etc)

  • spit hot fiyah

they have been better that i expected

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

I’m hoping that you’re right man. I would love to see this work out if it were to come to fruition but Melo’s attitude thus far in his career has me skeptical.

  • shockexchange

    LOL.

  • shockexchange

Yes. Not sure why you would mention on a post about Horry Jr though.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

if they go after Melo, then they are forfeiting their ability to go after Kevin Love the following summer. I really hope they don’t make that mistake.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Ahh how could I forget K Love. Now that you mention it I would much rather snag him than Melo.

  • berkamore

Off topic but I was doing little research to find out who sang the “Django Unchained” theme song. Rocky Roberts it turns out.

So I am looking around to see what I can find about the guy and I found this.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRIe1LJMXwg

Rocky is performing with……drumroll……………LOLA FALANA. And now, Shock, I understand why you talk so much about her. Because………..DAAAAAM She was FINE.

  • shockexchange

That’s it! When the Shock Exchange put a message in a bottle to Lola, if only he had written it in Spanish …

  • LakeShow

What is with you and Bob Horry’s bastard son? You’re weird dude.

  • LakeShow

    ok

  • ww5

Very true , everybody needs somebody in this game, he had a few years to do it alone and he cried about his supporting cast and demanded a trade.

  • euendun

U probably need to play with two additional basketballs to accommodate Carmelo and Kobe. Remember melo teamed up with A.I for a while and everybody thought the same thing two scorers together equaled championship somebody has to be the robin most nights

  • The real

I knew this was going to happen when Kobe came back. I watched LA’s games and without Kobe they would have definitely won both of those last two games. it’s also funny that Kobe gave his first game a F or D whatever cause he only had 9 points, but after a 20 point game he gave himself a B, the man is only concerned with himself and his stats. That LA team without him was good enough to win some night. He is to busy trying to be like Jordan and win six rings and he shoulda retired cause he ain’t gone get it.

  • uqk

    6th ring…doubt it
he still chasing alltime scoring lead….just bout 600 more to past jordan

  • LakeShow

Kinda like Magic, and Bird, and LeBron, and Wade, and you know the other all time greats.

  • LakeShow

    F*cking idiot.

  • LakeShow

    NOBODY thought championship.

And they played very well together BTW…

  • davidR

they played really well together, the only problem is they ran into the spurs and lakers in the 1st round a bunch of times in a row

  • RKJ92

Lake I’m just clowning xD I know he’s a top 20 player of all time, you have to know when I’m joking around man!

  • TTN

Of course he wants that too, but that’s kinda out of reach. He needs to average like 25 or 30 a game till he is 40 over 82 games for it to happen-that’s not exactly right but I saw it broke down on tv this past year. Kareem averaged 20 for years late in his career he set the bar fairly high.

  • LakeShow

    That’s what I don’t get.

I hate LeBron as much as you guys hate Kobe.

You don’t see me come on here every day and sh*tting on him.

I find it to be incredibly lame, but whatever. Continue…

  • euendun

Yes they did, everybody thought about all the points they could possibly put up and they started drooling. The same way this dude is doing by saying melo should play wit kb in LA.

The reason these dudes assemble teams is for championships so they odviously didn’t play well enough together if they didn’t get very far.

  • euendun

Then they frankly weren’t good enough then were they, it’s like bringing together melo and KB so u can see nothing but offense.

  • Initbruv

People love to sh*t on those that are on top. Nothing Shockexchange or anyone else says will change Kobe’s legacy and place as a great in basketball history. And I say that as someone who has rooted against dude from day 1.

  • 2chainz

completely agreed there is a reason why he only has one MVP that he barely should have won in the first place.

  • 2chainz

Lebron left in free agency and the others stayed with their respective teams with no drama created in the process.

  • butternuts

    Right on the money shock

  • Pfunk

But u do come on here and jump to Kobes defense like u owe him something , so u sir are just as lame.

  • Pfunk

Kobe is not exactly on top buddy and has not been the best in league for some years now. there are better players on better teams, everybody has their time. Basically when other dudes are on here giving their opinion about a situation or ball player stop crying about it like he just talked about your family.

  • LakeShow

That’s fine if you see it that way.

Just remember, I’m standing up for truth, and facts. These guys are just sh*tting on someone.

    Yeah i’m lame, they’re lamer.

  • davidR

nah man, melo and ai were great together. the rest of the team… not so much.

you said it yourself. you need to assemble a TEAM. melo and ai were great starting points. but they simply didn’t have the interior presence or the proper role players to compete with the spurs and lakers those years.

are westbrook and durant not good enough either?

  • Initbruv

He’s on top of the basketball world whether he’s a top player or not. I mean, unless you’ve been paying no attention.

  • LakeShow

You’re right man, I know you’re a hater of his so I just appreciate you acknowledging the truth.

    Some people can’t do that.

I can’t help but think the ones whom can’t give him any credit are quite jealous, or just upset about his success.

  • LakeShow

Pfunk’s what i’m talking about… So much hate.

Obviously you didn’t mean he’s #1 currently, you just meant he’s a huge part of basketball history.

  • Initbruv

Right, and like I said-he’s still on top of the basketball world. He shares it with others, but still on top of the media, culture, sponsorship, etc part of basketball.

  • LakeShow

lol… Look into Magic’s draft situation. Yeah not dramatic…

He had the all time leading scorer and a guy good enough to take Finals MVP from both of them. With a suberb supporting cast.

LeBron leaving in free agency is the most egregious of them all.
He joined two Super Stars in his prime and theirs within the same division, and got the greatest shooter of all time to play back up for them.

Bird had one of the greatest Power Forwards of all time coming off the bench for his squad…..

Wade won one championship on his own and then asked the best player in the L to join his team and a top 3 PF to tag along.

    The list goes on.

    Take of your goggles.

  • Pfunk

Every ball player has faults , Lebron got his, Kobe got his, if another dude call him out on something just cause u like the player don’t make that other guys perception of him no more wrong or right then yours. I’m sure you got heaps of shit to talk about Lebron even when it ain’t true u feed into it anyway. Just because Kobe was a member of 5 championship laker teams don’t make him absolved from wrong. And he was wrong last night with his assessment of that laker teams success without him. So you defending a dude who is clearly wrong does make you just as lame. It shows your nieve, valunerable side to Kobes shit.

  • tannertang

That’s so true. This fool acts like his name is Vanessa Bryant. Why does he care so much? Get the f over it. It’s not going to stop, and homeboy isn’t your lover, brother, or daddy. Suckers.

  • Pfunk

Pfunk on here telling the truth. The fact is every ball player from Kobe to lebron to Jordan all of em got faults. For u lakeshow to come on here and whine about another mans comments and perception of Kobe is lame. When a story break on here about Lebron no matter if it’s favorable or not you still gone put him down cause u don’t like him. The same with these dudes they don’t like Kobe and don’t have to. Kobes comments about the team last night was wrong, they was fine without him. You know that but yo love for him got u up here trying to defend it, give it up.

  • Pfunk

And if you were standing on facts then you would know that Kobe ain’t been helping these last two games he been hindering. Young and henry been getting less minutes since he came back and they lost both games. When know as a laker fan they could have won the those last two. You trying to defend Kobes comments is lame it show your nieve side, the dude is not a perfect.

  • PFunk

For you he is, people got options some like KD some like Lebron some like wade still, u and some others need to stop acting like Kobe is it, he is good but there are others if you been paying attention.

  • LakeShow

To relate a player that is a top 10 all timer to a player that is not in the Hall Fame is straight up disrespectful. And dishonest.

And no, I rarely ever write negative things about LeBron. I choose not to comment. Why would I comment if I’m just going to hate? And if I do hate on him, I admit it. I say “I’m hating.”

These cats? None of that. Just reveling in their own pig sh*t.

And you? You’re defending men who enjoy lies and hating.

Where did I say Kobe helped the team the last two games?

More importantly. From an intelligent POV Why would a man who has had 8 months off with 17 years of NBA wear and tear on his body “help” a team in his first two games back?

Calling me naive while misspelling it as “nieve” is too funny to not pass up on… Moving on…

Just admit you don’t like me because I like Kobe and the Lakers. And you enjoy the people that hate on KB because you too are a hater.

    Just admit who you are.

  • LakeShow

The hate is strong in this one…^

Initbruv has long disliked Kobe. He and I have spat before. You’re such a hater that you think another person who dislikes Kobe actually likes him…. smh…

  • thebossman15

He just came back from an achilles injury..do you realize how stupid you sound? i dont know(or care) who your favorite player is but i wouldnt expect them to be playing well after coming back from an achilles injury(months earlier than normal), with only one month to get in shape before playing in his first regular season game(with NO pre-season) and still 15 pounds overweight. For god’s sake the man dropped 20 points on 11 shots.

He obviously is disrupting the chemistry because he is just getting acclimated to his new surroundings, but lets not act like what the lakers will be able to do with a healthy kobe is better than what the .500 squad they are without him..there is clearly a much bigger window with kobe..marathon not a sprint..stop holding him to some next level standards that you wouldnt hold your favorite player to..the guy isnt jesus

  • robb

Jordan Hill should play more minutes, the guy’s the only guy who rebounds the ball. The team needs him.

  • Pfunk

First off this ain’t about Kobe coming back off an injury. This is about what the man shock exchange posted at the top. So u sir need to read before u engage. All that back drop you gave me about injuries and holding him to a standard. I’m not the one that thought he would come back and average 30 I know better that’s you Kobe fans that expect him to save LA. Fact is he a ego maniac who had the best center in basketball in shaq and wanted him gone so he can try to do it on his own. And when he didn’t get it done he cried for more support and asked for a trade. Point is he need help just like Jordan just like Lebron and all the others to win but u Kobe fans think because he scored 81 points he can do it all and perfect. U can be a fan that’s fine but when dude wrong he wrong. Stop being a female up here calling names cause people ain’t saying what u want them to say.

  • thebossman15

lol i clearly addressed the dudes comments, you just cant be that stupid

  • Pfunk

I’m not defending nobody on here we all got opionions. You got real sensitive when shock exchange spoke the truth and I pointed that out.

U said the dumbest thing ever “why would I comment if I’m going to hate on Lebron” then in the next sentence “if I do hate admit it” so dummy u do hate how stupid do u sound.

I never said u said helped he in the last two games I said u need to realize he didn’t help in the last two games. Your emotions about Kobe are getting the best of you calm down and read.

I never said he would help in the first two games, but being the Kobe fan that u are I would assume u thought he would because he is your Kobe bryant. For the record I been saying him coming back was going to hinder not help.

You trying to be a English teacher up here and correct my spelling when you using asterisks in yo curse words makes u a hypocritical lame.

Lakeshow honestly I dont care if u like Kobe I don’t know u, we just passing time debating. If u like him u like him that’s cool for u. The point of our conversations is that when them dudes joked on Kobe and it was true (cause it’s definitely well known and documented that Kobe alone in LA ain’t done a damn thing but whine for help) you talked about em like they were crazy

Stop bring up other topics that we not discussing to sound smart and cloud the conversation.

  • Pfunk

U must be too busy jacking off to some Kobe pictures and game tape cause yo wrote a heap of nonsense that had nothing to do with what me and the others been discuss. Be ashamed of yourself.

  • thebossman15

“And if you were standing on facts then you would know that Kobe ain’t been helping these last two games he been hindering” you fuckin dumass..put 2 and 2 together fuckboi..plus why are you commenting on 2 accounts you pathetic lame-o lol..you and pfunk are the same person and i will bet everything on that lmao..friggin imaginary friend lookin ass

  • Pfunk

All that you typed look and sound like you trying to convince yo self Kobe gone be alright.

Fact is they sucked last year and the year before wit him. They invested to much money in a 35 year old alpha male 2 guard. Because the lakers don’t use the draft they don’t retain their free agents (Trevor ariza, Shannon brown, shaq, Ramon sessions etc.) and no tier free agent will sign to play with kobe they will struggle for years to come for the loyalty they have shown Kobe.

Lakeshow, bossman read that and cry cause it’s true. Pfunk signing off, my work shift is over see y’all tomorrow.

  • Initbruv

Yeah everyone sees them. And Kobe is amongst that sh*t.

  • Initbruv

Yeah and honestly I’m a hater of his simply because I’m a Jazz fan so it’s a prerequisite part of the game. But I can’t help but admire his warrior attitude of never give up. Then again, I guess the appropriate response is f*ck that hack, he’s never been nothing….(sigh)…

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com/ Off The Backboard

I think deep down Kobe knows its over in terms of rings (at least definitely for this season). Next season they may have a shot depending on free agency, but you can’t win a ring with Kobe as your leader when he’s coming off an Achiles. And you definitely cannot win a ring with MDA as your coach.

However, as a player and a competitor, its pretty clear why he came back. Did you really want Kobe’s final game as an NBA player to be one where he crumpled to the floor after an injury?

The funny thing is that during last season, Kobe was dropping hints left and right that he was likely going to call it quits after his (pre-extension) contract expired, which was going to be this season. This season would have likely been Kobe’s last had he not torn the Achiles. I guess the Basketball gods had other plans for how his career comes to an end.

  • Initbruv

Dude, of course all of them have faults. And you’re no being some hero bombing on Kobe, everyone does. You’re getting called out on your substance, nothing more, nothing less.

  • havoc33

No point trying to understand him. He’s an ignorant fool. Don’t give him the attention.

  • Sérgio

Man, I really don’t get why some many people hate on Kobe. I haven’t really lived through all NBA eras, but he might be the most polarizing player of all time.

But one day, when he is retired, those haters will apreciate his brilliant career.

  • Pfunk

Shut yo stupid ass up, ain’t nobody trying to be a hero by talking about Kobe. How stupid do that sound. Somebody stated what rationale people would consider a valid point about Kobe and u and the other dudes hanging off Kobes nuts got y’all panties in bunch because of it

  • euendun

Its not two on two basketball so A.I averaging 20+ and Melo averaging 20+ amounts to the nuggets not getting out of the first round then they were not great they didn’t get it done. As the faces of the nuggets at that time they were not good enough to take them to the grand prize. Not saying they were not good players just saying the combination of jordan and pippen= 6 rings or Lebron and wade= 2 rings or shaq and Kobe =3 rings those guys can be considered great together because they won it all.

No because Westbrook wants to be the number 1 option when we all know thats ridiculous with KD on board. Their window closed once harden got trade. they had 3 guys with world class (u.s.a Olympic team talent) talent and they didn’t close.

  • TTN

Realistically the NBA as a whole is so deep with talent I think the Lakers window closed some years back. I remember that series with OKC were the harden, Westbrook and Durant just let Kobe and the lakers have it and it showed how far they were behind in terms of talent to the rest of the league. that Dallas series was ugly too.

The lakers shot themselves in the foot. They do not draft, they do not make trades or free agent signings to get younger. They are living off Kobe and no high level free agent will sign there to take a backseat to Kobe, which was part of dwights issue taking a back seat.

I don’t think he really had plans to quit. He was at such a high level still at 3rd in the league in scoring even if he did drop off a little he would still be better than a lot of other guys so I think Kobe knew he had a couple year left to play if he plays the chip is a possibility.

  • davidR

think about what you’re saying. you’re right, it’s not 2 on 2 basketball. it’s 5 on 5. AI and Melo are only 2. the 3 others on the floor with them to make 5 were not good enough to beat the 5 that the lakers and spurs had on the court…

and you’re assuming people immediately thought denver was an instant contender, especially with the spurs and lakers in the same conference. that simply isn’t true. the west was way too stacked those years, remember, the warriors won 49 games and still didn’t make the playoffs.

when you lose every year to the nba champions, but have a great 1-2 punch, it just means you’re either playing a better TEAM, or don’t have a good enough cast to support your stars.

  • LakeShow

I couldn’t even read you’re way of speech, sorry.

    It hurt my brain.

  • RKJ92

Hey man I’m not shitting on him, it was seriously just a joke; and this is me stepping up, and saying I am sorry for offending you.

  • RKJ92

    We cool?

  • LakeShow

    Of course dude.

    You’re good.

    I don’t really care.

I’m just overly weird where I don’t like people lying about someones skills. Even if someone says someone is “overrated” I’ll ask “why?” because often times people are just hating.
Even if someone saying LeBron is garbage. I’ll correct them. Cause that’s BS.

It’s SOL good dogg. Do your thing.

  • Jim

    KOBE plus Lakers: 1 – 4

    Lakers minus Kobe: 10 – 9

    You make the call.
