Sacramento Kings Not Concerned About Rudy Gay’s Poor Stats

Statistics were Rudy Gay’s biggest enemy during his brief stint with the Toronto Raptors. Given a fresh start in Sacramento, Gay and the Kings’ brass claim they’re not worried about the ugly numbers. Per the Sac Bee:

“Gay, 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, is the biggest acquisitionfor Kings first-year general manager Pete D’Alessandro because of his talent and contract ($17.9 million this season with a player option for $19.3 million next season). The Kings have lacked top players during their stretch of seven losing seasons, with the greatest void at small forward. Since trading Ron Artest after the 2007-08 season, the Kings have had a revolving door at small forward, something D’Alessandro hopes ends with the acquistion of Gay. Though Gay is shooting a career-low 38.8 pcercent, he is averaging 19.4 points this season, offensive production previous Kings coaches have begged for from the multiple draft picks and bargain-priced free agents the team has used at the position. Assuming the players dealt to Toronto pass their physicals, Gay will add scoring and athleticism to the Kings’ lineup beginning tonight. ‘You look at the man, you look at the body of work,’ D’Alessandro said. ‘This is a very, very good player, and we’re really excited to have him here for that reason. This is part of the process. We’re not there; it’s not a quick a fix. We’re saying let’s bring in talent and let’s see where it takes us.’ Gay isn’t surprised he was traded again. New Toronto general manager Masai Ujiri is remaking the Raptors and had already jettisoned high-priced center Andrea Bargnani in the offseason to create more financial flexibility. But Gay said he was thrown off by the timing. ‘We were in L.A. (Sunday) getting ready for a game and all of a sudden (he was pulled from the lineup),’ Gay said. ‘It was really all of a sudden.’

‘Yes, this year has not been a good year for him, shooting 18 times a game, shooting 38 percent from the field,’ head coach Michael Malone said. ‘But I think playing alongside a guy like DeMarcus will open up things. They didn’t have that kind of a post presence in Toronto. They had that in Memphis.’

DeMarcus Cousins leads the NBA in usage rate at 32.6. Isaiah Thomas is tied for ninth at 28. Gay is eighth at 28.3 from his time with Toronto this season. The question becomes will there be enough scoring chances for the trio? Only Oklahoma City has two players in the top-10 in usage rate (Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant). There’s also Player Efficiency Rating, which is the overall rating of a player’s per-minute statistical production. The league average is 15 every season. Cousins is sixth in the NBA at 26.27 in PER. Thomas is 10th at 24.14. Gay is 116th at 15.98. That doesn’t worry the Kings at all. ‘A lot of these things I don’t know what they mean,’ said Kings coach Michael Malone. ‘I know Rudy Gay is a talented player. I know when he was in Memphis and they were a competitive team and he was a big part of their success.’”

Good Luck Sacramento. I am glad as a Raptor fan that this happened. Get ready for the Rudy Gay show, and I don’t mean that in a positive way.

I thought the same before he came to Toronto. After watching every game this season Gay did not impress. He takes terrible jump shots. When he drives to the basket he turns it over the majority of the time or misses a layup. He kills the ball movement. One thing he is consistently good at is making clutch shots. His defense and rebounding where also good. But he killed any type of flow offensively

I’m far from a Rudy Gay supporter. Hell I’m actually one of his biggest critics but he was not the main problem with your Raptors. That whole team is a train wreck.

I’m waiting for the inevitable mid-season headline that reads “Demarcus Cousins Smacked Rudy Gay in the Locker Room for Taking Too Many Shots.”

i agree he takes bad shots and kills flow but in toronto he had to. after the raps got him, they were around a .500 team and even derozan was a more efficient scorer. they were better off gay taking those shots than someone else riiiiite?

Sounds like Tank commander Casey when he’s looking at the Raptors playbooks..

HELLLLL NOOOOOO… Rudy should NOT, and I repeat NOT BE TAKING 19 shots a game that was just ridiculous.. Tank commander Casey just didn’t have the balls to stand up to Rudy that’s why he kept shooting..

  • RKJ92

Agreed, but 38% shooting on 19 shots per game (which is almost a quarter of the Raptors shots), AND Rudy’s lackluster defense was not helping either dude lmao

This team… Is gunna be wild…

I totally agree he was (is? lol) awful so far haha I was just saying he shouldn’t be the scape goat for the Raptors’ inability to compete. Kind of like how delusional LA fans do out here when it comes to Pau Gasol.

  • RKJ92

Oh for sure its more then just Gay I have NP saying that it’s kinda obvious my team is like the repugnant sea donkey of the league in terms of success LOL. And I said (was) because it was meant like.. When he WAS with the Raptors; as in his success with his tenure here. He is still sh*t though that’s for damn sure.. Scal came through in the clutch more then Rudy man.. And that’s hard to admit.. lmao

i don’t have the link anymore but posted it yesterday or the day before.

an sbnation article was looking at rudy and his sharp decline following that shoulder injury. there was also a strong correlation between his usage rate and his inefficient play. maybe they are thinking that he will become more efficient if he doesn’t have to do too much on offense since they already have two guys in cousins and thomas that use up a LOT of possessions.

that player option is killer though

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Now that’s funny lol yeah I know you understood what I was talking about. It was more of a generalized statement to those who jump on the “Rudy Gay was the ONE thing holding the Raptors back” campaign.

    Long 2′s are a killer.

  • ciolkstar

I hate this trade, mainly because I have Boogie Cuzzo and Rudy on my fantasy team. LOL. They can’t both get shots up the way they had been this season. With Derrick Williams there now too, this Kings team is super-talented, still dysfunctional, but TONS of size and talent on the floor…

  • dont

Its only you raptor fans critisizing him at the moment..dont forget just a few seasons ago he was putting up 20 points and shooting 47%..lowry wasnt what you expected him to be..demar cant shoot..You guys are acting like hes the one and only problem you had

  • Saleem Rainman

now now, if Rudy did anything in his time with the raptors, it was come through in the clutch-at least more so than he did anything else. the times he held the ball and threw up a contested long 2 was aggravating, but he also had big plays in the 4th as well. (see houston game where he forced overtime with a 3, and portland game where he drove in for a lay up to force overtime, and a few times in his first few games with Toronto last year he hit 2 game winners) Give credit where its due at least…its just the first 47 minutes that he istn all that good lol

  • bee

just curious, if Gay was a free agent what would you guys pay him?

  • RKJ92

Well its not a few season’s ago, and this is now 3 full seasons of him shooting the ball poorly, secondly I don’t know what kind of rock you live under but the whole leagueleague, and most everybody on this site (not just Raptor fans) have been criticizing his game all ’3′ years he’s been playing poorly HENCE HIM BEING TRADED TWICE. Lastly do not generalize me as you Raptor fans because as I said below to T-Ray my team is utter garbage so I know Rudy wasn’t the sole reason my team lost games. If you’re gonna comment pure ignorance to me, without knowing a thing about my views dont bother commenting to me at all.

Sacramento’s offense does not permit that any player consistently take 18+ shots a game except for Cousins. Malone has designed it this way: isolation for Cousins and hit the boards hard after the shot goes up or kick out to open guards. The acquisition of Gay was awesome for this franchise. Isaiah, Ben, Gay, Thompson/Williams, and Cousins is an extremely athletic starting five. Thornton is a nice guard off the bench that provides scoring. Gray can give Cousins breathers. Jimmer should never see the floor because he’s a defensive liability. Nonetheless, with Cousins, Williams, Gay, and Thompson (if he isn’t traded in the next few weeks) receiving consistent minutes, the Kings have the potential to become an elite rebounding team, which isn’t easy in the Western Conference. Ultimately, the Kings haven’t had a big name in a long time, and whether you like it or not – Rudy Gay is a big name. I commend Sacramento’s front office for pursuing this deal and believe the Kings will be .500 by the end of December.

  • Steven Zenovieff

He wont be like that in sac. No way Malone will let it happen, because unlike the coach in Toronto, Sacs coach has balls. He doesn’t have to be the man because we already have the man. You didnt have a man, therefore, Gay had to be the man.

If you’re asking what we feel is his real worth, I’d say right around $8m a year.

  • asifyouknow

    lol

  • asifyouknow

You guys got great takes on the trade. This is going to be a disaster but don’t say anything to most Kings fans . They think Gay is the second coming of the Lord…lol

  • asifyouknow

sbnation article …oh yea that is reliable…lol….

  • Dagger

When Gay got to Toronto, everyone here said: “he’s inefficient, but he’s played with two big guys who clogged up the paint and closed off his driving lanes. He’ll shoot a higher percentage here!”

Now Gay arrives in Sacramento, and it’s: “he’s inefficient, but he didn’t play with a real big man who could attract attention down low. He’ll shoot a better percentage here!”

The reality is simple: Gay is not the player he was, period. Hasn’t been for years. He’s inefficient because he doesn’t recognize efficient shots, and even if he did he doesn’t have the handle he needs to get where he wants. When a lot of your possessions are consumed by a guy who misses (far) more than he scores, it’s not going to improve your team.

  • Dagger

I don’t think he’s a scapegoat at all. He was just not earning the team wins while making $17 million/year. There’s no sense in keeping someone like that, and there’s every reason to celebrate his departure.

  • Dagger

Derozan shot a much higher percentage this year while Gay was on the bench. And you better believe that some of Gay’s shots should have been taken by Valanciunas or Amir Johnson.

  • JL

I think he’s inefficient because he can no longer get efficient looks at the basket. Strange though since he’s still pretty young.

  • Mike From Spain

You seem to forget he played in a team where he had two strong post presences and he still shot inefficient shots at a high volume

  • some random guy

Good Luck with that. Gay will want to be the man regardless, it is in his blood to think of himself as an All-star without ever being an All-star. When Gay is taking constant isolation long contested 2pt jumpers, or Driving to the rim with every other player open and gets constantly stripped of the ball remember this comment. Either you are going to have Gay taking lots of shots, or he will be benched, which won’t justify the trade and his money. If he is benched, he has no value as a trade or free agent and will use his player option, which comes back to wasted money (where you can’t use to sign anyone productive).

And the Coach is the problem in Toronto, a lot of Raptor fans say the best way to tank this season for the hope of Wiggins is keeping Casey as coach all year.

  • some random guy

I agree, I am not saying otherwise. I would say the coach is the biggest problem. But I am one of the Raptor fans who say that keeping Casey as coach is the best way to tank and have chance at Wiggins.

  • dont

go check the stats now that were a good number of games in after the trade…shooting 50%, taking 7 less shots a game, and averaging the same amount of points.dont just listen to what they say on sportscenter dude. form your own opinions, a lot of rudy haters out there. dont generalize you as a raptors fan cause theyre garbage??so your waiting to hop on the bandwagon??cause thats what your basically saying..LOL. im a die hard KINGS fan, they suck, im proud of it, im what you call a real fan. your not and youll never be.goodbye :P
