Carmelo Anthony Reportedly Has Lakers, Clippers and Bulls on Free Agency Short List

As the Knicks continue to sink, New York tabloids are feasting on Carmelo Anthony‘s free agency and potential (likely?) departure. The NY Post reports that Melo’s short list of possible destinations next summer include Los Angeles and Chicago:

Though still undecided, there’s part of him that may want to bail if he thinks the Knicks’ ship completely sinks. He does not want to be the scapegoat.

Anthony wants to play for a winner, but desperately wants to play in a big market because of his business ventures — his Jordan Brand sneaker line, his PowerCoco energy drink, his watch deal.

That is why New York, Los Angeles, where he has a home, and even Chicago are on his short list, according to a source. The source said the Clippers — with buddy Chris Paul — are more attractive than the Lakers, though the purple-and-gold have cap space and the Clips don’t.

[...] But Anthony’s preference is to remain with the Knicks if he sees a solid plan in place — one that could include Kevin Love in 2015. It was one of the chief reasons president Steve Mills was hired and Glen Grunwald fired. Owner James Dolan and his lieutenants thought Mills could convince Anthony of their future plan better than Grunwald, who didn’t have a relationship with Anthony.

I don’t think Melo deserves to have it like that. The sort of mindset that whatever team he chooses should be grateful he has chosen to play for them.

As a Clippers fan for the past 10 years I don’t wish to get a near 30 year old selfish ball hog who completely slows the ball down on offense and doesn’t try on defense. He’s a world class ball player but you can’t win an nba championship with Melo.

  • KingBenjamin

Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony will never win a championship in the NBA.

  • Saleem Rainman

I seriiously hope he doesnt sign on just because of a “plan” the knicks have for free agency…those never work, and it leaves them scrambling for a plan c or d. example : getting Amare stoudemire instead of LeBron, Wade, or Bosh

  • LakeShow

He and Kevin Love would be terrible on a team together. I hate to say, since I’d love to see it, but it just doesn’t add up well.

They both need to play the 4 to have maximized success. And both need to be surrounded with a defensive front court to win.

It’s certainly not a match made in heaven.

  • brothasdontsurf

And now, starting at Small Forward for your Los Angeles Lakers….

  • Nathan Shane Long

Does it even matter where he go he will NEVER win an NBA championship

  • robb

Not the Lakers, please go somewhere else

  • robb

How about Love and Russ Westbrook?

  • robb

    don’t say that

  • LakeShow

    Now that… That’s more promising.

  • Evan Boland

You’re a thousand percent right. Don’t compliment each other at all.

  • Vince Gully

It would be beautiful to watch Westbrook finish off those Kevin Love outlet passes on a nightly basis.

  • brothasdontsurf

lol it’s the perfect place for his diva asss

  • derrick

with a healthy D. Rose, i think the Bulls should go after MELO cause the only thing that chicago’s team is missing all these years is a scoring option. so a starting lineup with rose, butler, melo, booz(maybe) and noah would be great for the trophy (IF melo start to play with a team-spirit)

  • Duriel

Melo & Kevin Love do not = a Championship in New York. Melo needs a PG who is more important to the team and better than he is to run the Knicks. Melo is a bonafide scorer and that’s mainly it. Unless Melo plays with CP3, LeBron, Rondo, Lilliard, Irving, Bledsoe, etc type player I don’t see him getting anywhere close to a ring regardless of what team he plays on.

  • robb

    lol

  • Dakota Uluilelata

the thing with melo is that he must be your BONAFIDE STAR…his game doesnt translate to simply teaming with other superstars because its so offensive based and he needs the ball in order to succeed. His only chance of winning an actual championship are with him at the forefront with a good team of roleplayers who are comfortable with revolving their game around melo. aka the traditional way

  • robb

    Why do you hate DRose?

  • robb

Yeah, i’d love to see that

  • LakeShow

    On the Lakers preferably :)

  • kwamepooh

“aaahh the pressure of playing in new york city… BIG expectations”

  • danpowers

given that he’ll demand a max deal i wonder how this teams would be able to sign him and stay/become contenders by doing so. adding his max deal to another max deal will make it difficult, if not impossible, to add/keep enough quality pieces willing to do the dirty work

  • The Seed

Bulls should get him. As a Laker fan, I don’t want him.

  • robb

    obviously! lol

  • 2chainz

As long as Lebron is healthy and has a dominant team you might want to add Kevin Durant and Paul George to that list also.

  • spit hot fiyah

actually very possible in a not so distant future

college teammates who team up in their college city and (i think) become free agents in the same summer.

  • Mike Gilbert

problem is, we don’t have even close to the cap space needed. Even if we amnesty Boozer and don’t resign Deng, we STILL don’t

  • Mike Gilbert

that’s not true at all. When has Melo ever had a bonafide ball handler on his team? Why do you think the Knicks run the offense through his ISOs? Cuz they got no other options!!! Having CP3 share the offensive duties with Melo would be insane, because neither would ever get doubled. Have you seen Melo play in the Olympics? I know that’s not a great sample size, but he becomes the best spot up shooter of all time

  • COYNE

That team is all about defensive steel, Melo cant defend.
If Rose get’s healthy it would be detrimental to his offensive game to have basketball-black-hole on the court with him.

  • COYNE

‘Lol’ at the thought of Kobe and Melo on the same team. No one else would take a shot all year.

  • servant james

the Lakers and Westbrook can crash and burn in hell….oh wait…they have.

  • sabs

Seems like this dude is the only one really “watching” basketball games.

  • playa

Sooo are you implying that Lebron will win next 10 championship or what??You do know that George is 6-7 years younger that Lebron which makes his “window” a little wider right?

  • Castrovi

    D. Rose as well

  • Castrovi

Their thinking bout adding Jr smith as well. Imagine this, nick young, Kobe, melo, smith, n gasoline if he’s still there. They’ll need 2 balls to play.

  • thebossman15

calm down it isnt the MJ era, if nowitzki could do it then george and durant definitely can

  • Castrovi

    Ummm yes they will

  • largenation

man 10 years?! gtfoh. smdh. you blake d#*k riders need to get off his jock man. clippers fan be like “down since 1970″ get off the bandwagon

  • pposse

the play is to trade Deng for Bynum and then release bynum right away we will have enough to make a run at Melo in the offseason and this should be his preferred destination by a country mile

  • Nick Holden

Honest question here: What does bonafide in this context mean? (English isn’t my first language) From the definitions I’ve been able to find I can’t get “bonafide ball handler” to make sense.

  • 2chainz

if Lebron showed up in those finals they would have 3 peated by now headed for 4 straight this year.

  • 2chainz

I would not say the next 10 championships thats a bit of much, but as long as Lebron is healthy and the heat are competitive maybe the next 2 titles at least but thats all just speculation.

  • thebossman15

if kobe had help from 04-07 while at his peak he could of had god knows how many rings, you cant have your argument based on ifs

  • LakeShow

    Oh man… that is funny.

The thing ppl seem to forget about these Knicks is that Melo & Amare /w Chandler were supposed to be the BIG 3 in NY. Amare knee problems obstructed that and has not played at an all-star level since his 1st yr /w the Knicks. Melo leaving the team to go where??? L.A. to go play for Dantoni again? Him going to Chi-town for what?? to be stuck with another player who’s having knee problems? The Clips have no Cap-Space. Melo is staying in NY. $$$ talks B.S. walks

  • robb

    absolutely

  • robb

    Only 2 balls?

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

Come on now. We all know the heat are good, and will be championship contenders for however long they stay together. But they are beatable. Hell, they should have lost last year. That being said, I think Melo will have trouble ever winning a title without taking a huge pay cut. Not many other big stars compliment him. Paul could play with anyone I think.

  • Mike Gilbert

bonafide in this sense means very good. It’s not a perfect word to use in this sense, as usually it means genuine, but it has a bit of a slang meaning like this also

  • Mike Gilbert

will they though? Because even if they amnesty Boozer and don’t resign Deng, it will give them about $10 million in cap room with like 6 players under contract because of cap holds and such

  • Mike Gilbert

Even if we do that, AND amnesty Boozer, we will have about $10 million in cap space with only like 6 players under contract because of cap holds and such. If we REALLY wanted to sign Melo, we’d have to get rid of Taj as well

  • Nick Holden

Yeah that’s what I figured, thanks.
What about Allen Iverson though? ;)

  • Castrovi

As a matter of fact your right. I didn’t even took into consideration rose increase in salary. Melo will have to do something we all know not happening

  • Castrovi

Lol your right 4 balls should work

  • 2chainz

He had help in 2004 and 2008 and could not get it done. Never mind that 39pt blowout in game 6 against Boston to close out the series lol and if Perkins was healthy he would only have 4 rings right now.

  • 2chainz

Melo might not win a championship but he is fun to watch like Stephen Curry and the only teams that can beat Miami are San Antonia and Indiana and the heat still have a distinct advantage and that is Lebron James.

  • thebossman15

wtf are u smoking, he had shaq and a 40 yr old karl malone in 04 lmao..and in 08 it was arguably the most cheating i have seen ever, they weren’t giving kobe any calls and yet they still almost won..If allen missed the 3 and the refs didnt give lebron more calls then the rest of the league combined the year before lebron would have no rings so whats your point? Plus lebron choked for the whole maverick series lmao this guy was M.I.A there were missing persons reports everywhere looking for this man

  • 2chainz
  • thebossman15

…i could stick a truck in between the amount of space defenders gave lebron to shoot, that shit is embarassing for a guy to be the apparent “main focus of opposing defenses” yet cant even attract a defender within 2 feet of him lol. Plus where is the elite skill in the way he scored all of these points..the dude scored all his points off wide open jumpers and backdoor cuts and transition lol, if thats the type of ball that appeals to you then whatever floats ur boat guy, the dude looked like a role player that had a breakout game
