Executives Reportedly Think Kevin Love Wants to Play for the Lakers

Kevin Love is one very unhappy camper in Minnesota. Despite his own spectacular play, he hasn’t made the Playoffs with the Timberwolves, and as his sixth season spirals down the drain, there’s growing speculation that Love will look elsewhere — Hollywood, for instance — when he gets a chance to bolt (the star forward is in the second of a four-year contract.) Per CBS Sports:

When time came to sign Love to an extension during the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, (former GM David Kahn) declined to give Love a five-year, 30 percent max deal under the newly minted Derrick Rose rule. Love had to settle for a four-year deal in which he demanded — and received — a player option after the third season.

That opt-out is coming in July 2015 and will be a guiding force in every decision that the new GM, (Flip) Saunders, makes between now and then. Essentially, Saunders will be faced with the same predicament that encumbered Masai Ujiri in Denver with Anthony; Otis Smith in Orlando with Howard; Kevin O’Connor in Utah with Williams; and, once upon a time, Danny Ferry in Cleveland with James.

There’s no clear answer, and no guarantees that one strategy will work better than the other. It’s worth noting, of course, that Love shares the same wanderlust for a bigger market that led to (Deron) Williams’ departure from Utah. He also shares the same agent, New York-based Jeff Schwartz.

“They should trade him,” one Eastern Conference executive said. “No one thinks he’s staying. Everyone knows he wants to go to the Lakers.”

UCLA bretheren come together where you belong!!!

  • hashzz

It won’t take long for the Lakers to get their next franchise star. And that player will not be carmelo.

  • shockexchange

It only makes sense. He’s from the west coast and his dad, Stan Love, played for the Lakers. Coming to L.A. would be a homecoming for Kevin.

  • Anthony

And once again Minnesota looses an all-star caliber power forward. Perhaps he goes to LA and wins Kobe his 6th chip in his 2nd year in LA similarly to KG?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

HE IS NOT MAKING IT TO FREE AGENCY IN MINNESOTA.

    k bye

  • i AN LEGEND

    MAKE IT HAPPEN MITCH

  • spit hot fiyah

    ??

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he will be traded before his contract expires. he hates minnesota lol they know that.

  • spit hot fiyah

jelani mccoy should make a comeback

  • spit hot fiyah

oh, making IT to. i didn’t understand what u were writing

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    whoops! fixed

  • pposse

way too high of expectations for a guy who never even sniffed the playoffs

  • LakeShow

Who is the 2nd best player he has played with? Pek? Martin? Rubio?

Let’s see what he can do with someone that plays both sides and cares about winning.

  • LakeShow

It’s almost as if LA is Krypton and it’s time for Superman to come home.

  • LakeShow

Westbrook is built for LA, but I feel bad for KD haha.

  • LakeShow

Yeah, needless to say, I would like this.

  • TR

Are we talking about a Love and Kobe combo? That isn’t going to work. Kobe’s gonna be half the man he used to be by the time hes in LA

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange has gone on record with his thoughts on the “entitled, underachieving” Lakers. However, Kevin Love is a totally different situation. He has an emotional attachment to the Lakers and that’s probably where he belongs.

  • https://twitter.com/_SimeonA703 LBN-3805

I’m a Celtics fan but I would still want to see Kevin Love on the Lakers

  • LakeShow

There would need to be other pieces added of course.

  • Vince Gully

If Minnesota is serious about moving forward, they shouldn’t just assume Love will bolt. Look at Portland. Aldridge was looking for a trade, but Portland didn’t cave. And it’s not like Portland got instantly better by adding marquee free agents. They’re basically competing with the same team as last year, with a couple of mid level/minimum guys to shore up their bench. The only difference is all their contributors got better over the summer and their coach was better able to implement his system. Who’s to say Minnesota can’t make a similar leap? This is basically Minny’s first year with all their core intact and healthy. Rubio is still a very young player who still has potential to grow and make a Lillard-like leap.

  • robb

    I don’t lol

  • robb

    Yes

  • Sérgio

    Absolutely cosign.

  • LakeShow

    lol, Seattle connection.

  • KSupreme

ditch pau, let marshall train under nash, pick up melo and love

  • shwoop

Do people not realize Kevin Love was in LA for like one year before moving to Oregon? He’s from Oregon. He played basketball in LA for ONE YEAR.

He’s not an LA guy, he’s from Oregon.

  • Micah Thomas

He’s specifically from Lake Oswego, one of the affluent suburbs of Portland. This area is so different from L.A. it’s not even funny.

  • Micah Thomas

Rubio can only make a Lillard-like leap if he goes back in time and is a baller from Game 1 of his NBA career. Not to say that Rubio can’t make the jump, but his mind isn’t built the same way as Lillard – he lacks killer instinct and that confident swagger.

  • Conor

Gasol never passed the first round in Memphis before joining LA… instantaneous Finals berth. And Love is much better than Gasol ever was.

  • Kap

Stastically yes but in real life, NO!!! Gasol is a top ten passing big man of all time and a great post up player. And was a good shot blocker.

  • brothasdontsurf

Jerome Moiso would be a sensational backup, with Cedric Bozeman running the point!

  • Anthony

Love is a rebounding PF that can hit 3′s…basketball wise it seems like a match. He’d clean up all of Kobe’s misses, and Kobe’s Bball IQ would make Love a prime assist target once he drives to the cup and pulls the help side D.

  • Fool of a Took

I don’t either cuz westbrook is overrated and KD would do better without that faker

  • LakeShow

    Firstly: Awesome name.

2ndly… You are a complete idiot and you know it.

  • V

lol assist target. kobe doesn’t have any assist targets dude

  • LakeShow

That’s funny cause he put up the highest APG of any SG last season.

Any other fallacies you live by you want to bring up?

  • JJ Jones

That’s what I’m saying idiots used the same cliche that he doesn’t pass but don’t fucking watch games. For most of his career kbe had no consistent shooter to pass to and whn he did he led all sg in assists last year. I guess headen and wade are ball hogs too fucking idiots.

  • JJ Jones

Gasol was never better than love not a better scorer or rebounder. Ill give u that he’s a better defender but he hasn’t done shit without him 0/16 in playoff games without kobe bryant. Yeah that the 2010 finals mvp alright the soft spanidard who can’t win a damn playoff gamewithout the supposedly overrated kobe bryant.

  • playa

Agree with the first part, about the second- I would enjoy watching Durantula going Kobe/MJ 35 ppg for a season or two& I believe he’s good enough to win a title sooner or later,so im only able to feel bad for lakers i guess :)
Ps. I hope LA loses all of the remaining games & draft as first, let’s win this TANKATHON!!!!

  • Conor

The sole advantage Prime Gasol has on Love is his blocking ability. Love either equals or surpasses him in every other facet of the game, statistically or physically.

  • andrew

    ‘sota cursed

  • LakeShow

They act like Shaq and Pau were marksmen.

Those guys don’t convert a lot of passes into instantly made shots. They are 1 on 1 players. Not shooters. LeBron has always been on elite shooter laden teams. KB has not. When he was, last year(Meeks, Nash)for a stretch; he put up amazing stretches of double doubles with assists.

  • LakeShow

If you are ever in LA for any stretch of time, living in the city, I think you feel a bit native to there. Yes he’s “from Oregon”, but his Dad was a Laker and his Uncle is a part of the Beach Boys…

Stop acting like it doesn’t make sense.

  • LakeShow

Yes, exactly what I was thinking.

Love would be able to let KB operate in the post more also. Where we all know he’s highly effective. Probably even at 36+ years old.

  • Waingro

No, he just lacks a consistent jump shot. He’s plenty competitive and better defensively than Lillard. And his passing is obviously super-elite.

This is a good time to note that the T-Wolves could’ve had Stephen Curry or Ty Lawson.

  • pposse

how so? Gasol was getting that Memphis squad to the playoffs, It wasn’t like Memphis had overwhelming talent back then. I don’t even think he played with another all star caliber player back then. I’ll take that Pau over current Love until Love proves otherwise still.

  • The Seed

    LA likes Love.

  • Me that’s who

Stop talking like u know basketball, by yo dumb ass comments we can tell u just in love with Kobe. Shaqs number speak for themselves, and if Pau can’t score when u give it to him, how come Kendall Marshall been dropping nothing but dimes to him in the pick and roll lately? Instantly made shots? That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. So Kobe passed the ball and shaq and Pau was just missing the first shot and getting the rebound and putting it back? Cause they damn sure scored a lot of points as lakers. They would have a million damn rebounds for they career by yo logic.

  • Me that’s who

This too is another dumb ass comment, Kobe do not work mf’s over in the post like that. He score off pulls ups and drives. U wishful thinking. U just want another big name to come to LA to try to save the team it ain’t gone happen.

  • Ugh

    “Shaqs number speak for themselves”
“he put up the highest APG of any SG last season. ”

Apparently Kobe’s numbers require an interpreter.

  • JML-G

yeah, Durant is already better off without Harden, now he needs to get rid of Westbrook and also Ibaka…

all humbe Kevin needs is his friends Perkins and Fisher!

  • JJ Jones

Thats what I’m saying u don’t get the assist unless the player…I don’t know MAKES the shot. Evergon says that kobe always has dominant big men first of all thats not true. Gasol is a pussy is 0/16 in playoff games without kobe. Would anyone even know who his washedup a** I today if he hadhadn’t played with kobe? I doubt it.

  • JJ Jones

So why was kobe the most efficent player int the post last season then hmm?? In 2010 in the stretch where gasol was out kobe averaged 33 ppg just playing exclusively from the post. Just sayin

  • JJ Jones

Or they can get both we’ve seen this before people never learn.

  • shockexchange

Great point. Love has no connection whatsoever to LA or the Lakers. That’s why NBA execs think he wants to play for the Trailblazers … oh wait …

  • RunNGun

The executive mentioned in this article belongs to the Knicks. Walsh was not involved. :)

  • RunNGun

Love to the Clippers for Blake Griffin. Make it happen, Sterling.

  • Me that’s who

U making up shit, do u think i started watching basketball last week to believe that bs the most efficient in the post last year? Don’t make up stuff cause u love the guy. I like Kobe too but to say what u just said was the dumbest thing ever here u go…..http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics/_/year/2013

  • Me that’s who

He been playing in the league for damn near 2 decades and he finally passed the ball and u act like he been doing this his entire career.

If u knew anything basketball I wouldn’t have to explain to u why he was passing during that small stretch…

Read something and stop making up sh/t Goran Dragic and Monta Ellis averaged more assist then Kobe last year as 2 guards….
    http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/player/_/stat/assists/sort/avgAssists/year/2013/position/shooting-guards

  • Me that’s who

33ppg just from the post huh? Thats the reason the lakers let Dwight walk then… Because they can have Kobe play the post and average 33ppg like he did when gasol was out? Did that happen on your NBA live video game or something?

Dude u know nothing about basketball. With your logic Kobe should play both PF and SG for the lakers and then they would only need to put another PG,C, and SF on the floor and they good to go… Because we know what Kobe capable of as a SG so let him work the league over from down low to and average 75 a game then… U dummy.

  • The Real

It don’t matter who come to LA, they signed Kobe for two more years and 48.. They down bad for years to come the game last night solidified that,

And don’t say Kobe didn’t play, cause he played last year with this SIMILAR type squad and barley got to the post season.

  • JJ Jones

Really if u actually watched games instead of following myths then you woul d know that as long as teammates continue to hit shot then hell continue passing. Kobe is NOT a point guard and he’s paid to do what SHOOTING guards do put the ball in the hole. He averages more assists for his career than mj put no one ever mentions that. Perception is not always reality.

  • JJ Jones

Wtf if kobe is in the post for an entire game then where would howard and gasol be on the three point line? It doesn’t take a dumbass to figure this out kobe is versitile enough to score from the perimeter and the post gasol and howard can only score down low effectively

  • LakeShow

No rings without the best shooting guard in the L…

    Pretty spectacular.

Yes career 26-5-5 on 45% fg’s with 5 chips. 2 as the main guy and 3 playing the most important player next to the most dominant player ever.

    A lot of interpretation…

    If you’re an imbecile.

  • LakeShow

Yes… I’m ignorant for thinking KB is a very capable post player.

    Me.

I’m the one that is ignorant…

  • LakeShow

When you right, you right Shock.

  • shockexchange

What kid never wanted to work for the same company his father worked for? People come off like that’s a new phenomenon.

  • Me that’s who

U sound to stupid, you are so stupid u didn’t realize I was using your premise on this subject to show u how stupid it sounded for u to say Kobe averaged 33 without Pau from the post. Go learn something and then I’ll talk to u.

  • Me that’s who

I know u don’t know sh/t about the game based on what u say on here. Ur so stupid for Kobe u probably think he could start at C or PF and lead the league in scoring huh?

If u knew anything u would realize Kobe doesn’t operate IN THE POST. He posts up guys from time to time just like his idol MJ and then he shoots a fadeaway jumper. U dumbasses act like he is posting up two feet from the basket and scoring that’s operating from the post. Nobody said he wasn’t a capable ball player, wake your ass up he can’t do everything.

  • Me that’s whos

Following stats is following facts from games played ass. Myths where u get that? There u go talking nonsense again Kobes career assist average is 4.8 MJs 5.3 neither one of really passed unless they had to this is no myth. I say that based off how often they have the ball as go to players. U need to get wit reality and start using google, espn, NBA.com before u speak on here about stats. Thank u

    http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/110/kobe-bryant
    http://search.espn.go.com/michael-jordan/

  • LakeShow

Hey, did you not hear me? I’M the ignorant one, not you, obviously…

    *cough** **cough**

  • Me that’s who

I know u the gay one, did u hear that…

No need for coughs here u can read i said you are gay for Kobe…

  • LakeShow

Okay, well I’m not homophobic like you so that is not a insult.

    Very nice try though… **cough**
