Injured Kobe Bryant Ruled Out of NBA All-Star Game

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

He didn’t feel like he deserved to play in the 2014 NBA All-Star Game, and now, Kobe Bryant won’t have to.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced on Tuesday night that the superstar guard will be out for at least three more weeks due to ongoing knee pain and swelling. In December, Bryant was initially ruled out for six weeks with a fracture of the lateral tibial plateau in his left knee.

Kobe, as one might expect, is bummed out about the whole thing.

Per the LA Times:

“[I'm] down about it,” Bryant said following the team’s 104-92 loss to the Pacers.

“It’s like an internal swelling,” Bryant said. “It’s different. It’s not something that’s kind of on the surface where you can pinpoint and feel the swelling around. It’s deep in there.”

“Just trying to be patient, trying to be calm, just trying to take it a day at a time,” he said. “I’ve been through worse. The Achilles was much much worse … With the Achilles, I couldn’t move at all. With this one, at least I can walk around a little bit, at least I can do the bike, do something active. Just trying to find the positive in it.”

Kobe has appeared in just six games this season, averaging 13.8 points and 6.3 assists.

Bryant will stick to non-weight bearing exercise, which means mostly working out on a stationary bike. He’ll miss at least the next seven games, including All-Star Weekend (Feb. 14-16.)

The Lakers, losers of five in a row, are 16-30.

An all-star game with no Kobe, KG or Tim…I’m starting to feel old.

  • don

the 90s draftees are starting to be out of the ASG now… damn i’m old

  • Lloyd

TD should get a reserve spot.

  • playa

I hope everything will be alright with my man Kob, but for the sake of our tankathon…..http://replygif.net/1016

  • Lloyd

    Harden’s getting that spot.

  • shockexchange

In the Shock Exchange’s opinion, Horry Jr needs to simply go home, relax and curl up with a good book. He’ll (i) be well rested for next season and (ii) be an expert about the stock market and U.S. economy.

Here’s hoping the Lakers pick someone who doesn’t mind being screamed at for his entire rookie/sophomore season before the team becomes his. I pray to the basketball gods that they take Embiid or Exum. I want nothing to do with Jabari Parker.

Tell me about it and I’m only 21 smh

  • bike

Man, the way he describes his knee condition doesn’t sound good at all. Wonder if we will see him at all this season.

I wish Kobe would see the writing on the wall for the Lakers this year and just sit the rest of the season. Why?
    1. Better draft spot in a draft full of very good (though I hesitate to say great) players.
    2. A year to get completely healthy and recharged, which would give him enough juice to get that all time scoring title, and just maybe (but not likely), another title shot.
    3. Massive write off for his team, which I doubt he cares about, but could help them out.

No one wants to see him chucking shots in a meaningless, doomed season, just so he can say “I’m a warrior, I made it back”. We know you’re a warrior, Kobe, so relax a minute!! (I’m talking to him now, as I assume he reads my comments)

  • spit hot fiyah

i’m cool with that, as long as it is not anthony davis’ spot

  • The Seed

Kobe, should sit out the rest of the season, but he will probably play. I hope the Lakers can get Parker, Wiggins, Exum or Smart. Lakers need one of these players.

  • LLC#12

I hope so but it’s no certainty.

  • Lloyd

Yea between Davis, LA, and Dwight I think there are going to be too many bigs to give Timmy an honourary spot. Unless team record plays a part in it too.

  • spit hot fiyah

and people aren’t even mentioning dirk

  • Lloyd

Boogie should get a look too.

  • spit hot fiyah

for real, my snub game suggestion sounds better every day

  • Lloyd

Haha or just have two West squads face each other, and then have a Pacers/Heat starters game with some Eastern reserves on either side instead of the Dunk Contest

  • brothasdontsurf

Kobe would NEVER play the All Star Game if he wasn’t able to play for his team during the first half of the season. I really don’t know why anyone would think he would either.

  • Jay Brodes

this is just downright depressing..lost year…great!! well mamba signs some autographs and he did not feel comfortable suiting up anyways…damn!

  • Evan Boland

    :(

  • Evan Boland

Aldridge, Cousins, heck even Pau is outplaying TD. Dirk. It’s close. Dwight.

  • Dfrance

I’ve long thought they should just select the 24 best players regardless of conference. Fans still vote in the top 10 by position, coaches still pick the reserves and the top 2 vote getters draft their teams.

  • shockexchange

    How ’bout Thor?

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com/ Off The Backboard

I think that is what he is actually doing. If the Lakers were winning, he’d have been a lot more focused on coming back. But he doesn’t talk about his injury much, and when he does, its not “I’m training and rehabbing like crazy to come back!!!” like he normally does with injuries.

This is called the “sneaky tank” method.

  • Caboose

    Pau. Stop.

  • http://www.offthebackboard.wordpress.com/ Off The Backboard

    SNEAKY TANKING ALERT

  • Caboose

Kobe getting the starting nod this year makes the years Yao got them seem justified.

  • Evan Boland

I agree TD > Pau. But Pau putting up better numbers in points, assists and rebounds. I’m just saying it wouldn’t be a snub if TD didn’t get a nod based solely on his production THIS season. There’s a lot of guys deserving in the West.

  • Max

    AD?

  • Max

    That would be great!

  • Max

That would even make it a lil more interesting!
    Make it happen Stern/Silver.

  • robb

I like the new NFL format.

    Team Magic vs. Team Bird.

Kobe Bryant. How quintessentially & consistently basketball has this guy been? I am gonna miss him & and I wish him a few seasons back as a premiere player… that being said.
I hate him. Have since he took the whole LA thing a bit, well, you know. In fact, on point of purpose, I went for anybody that went against him, from memory; Miller; Iverson; Kidd; Duncan/Parker/Ginobli; Billups; Pierce; Allen; McGrady – to name a few. You know, to me, for the better part of my NBA life the name Kobe Bryant = NEMESIS

    noun (pl.nemeses |-siːz| )
the inescapable agent of someone’s or something’s downfall: injury, consistently his nemesis, struck him down during the match.
    • a long-standing rival; an arch-enemy: will Harry Potter finally defeat his nemesis, Voldemort?

A now seeing you and Nash like this, it’s kinda sad.
Oh Kobe. When that day comes, I’ll look down at my pot belly and though it may not be on the outside, I shall weep.
On the day you go, a part of me is gonna go.
    It’s funny.
    Now, I don’t even hate.
    I have Lebron…

When is Lakers nation going to come to.grips with the fact that this team is tanking…since Mitch can’t come out and say”we’re tanking”, what he can do is make sure half of this team stays on IR for the remainder of the season. Of course the draft is a lottery system, not guarantee #1 pick, they might as well take the chance.

This is the only draft within the next 4 years in which the Lakers have their draft pick, in others words, perfect time to enter the shark TANK. who knows, maybe they get lucky like the spurs with Timmy coming after a David Robinson injury.

No joke, the West All Star Snubs MIGHT actually be a better team than the East All Star Team.
Here’s how I see it shake out (by the L, not my actual picks):

West: Curry, Paul, Durant, Griffin, Love, Aldridge, Harden, Howard, Davis, Lillard, Westbrook, Parker

East: Irving, Wade, George, Bron, Melo, Bosh, Wall, Lowry, Drummond, Hibbert, Milsap, Deng

West SNUBS: Thomas, Lawson, Dirk, Duncan, Cousins, Bledsoe, Ibaka, Randolph, Monta, Matthews, Lee, Dragic

Like no joke, that East team against the West Snubs? Sure, the East would PROBABLY win, but it would be competitive. And that’s sad.

And I’m not even gonna post the East snubs, because there really aren’t any.

  • no one asked for your opinion fuckboi

  • Armando

    West ASG Depth Chart:
    G: Curry – Paul – Lillard – Conley – Lawson
    G: Bryant* – Parker – Harden – Dragic – Ellis
    F: Durant – Davis – Cousins – Parsons – Iguodala
    F: Griffin – Aldridge – Nowitzki – Lee – Randolph
    F: Love – Howard – Duncan – P. Gasol – Ibaka

Lots of deserving players… I think Nowitzki and Harden makes it as wild cards, whilst Lillard replaces Bryant… If Paul doesn’t make it i think the coaches will select Duncan as his replacement… All of which will be fine by me…

    East:
    G: Irving – Wall – Lowry – Walker
    G: Wade – Stephenson – Johnson
    F: George – Millsap – Derozan
    F: Anthony – Noah – Deng – West
    F: James – Hibbert – Drummond – Jefferson

Derozan and JJ as the wild cards based on team play? (Personally I’d take Deng… he’s well liked by coaches so maybe…?)

  • Armando

It’s the commish who will select Duncan as the replacement obviously…

  • Lloyd

I don’t think Lillard gets that spot over Harden. LA is the best player on that team so I can’t see them choosing Lillard to start over him.

TD doesn’t deserve a spot based on this season, but I want him to get an honourary place just because he’s one of my favourite players.

And I think Klay Thompson and Jamal Crawford should be in that chart too. They won’t make it most likely, but they should be in the conversation.

I consider Demar a guard and he’s having as good a year, if not better, than any of the guys you listed. Lance is the 3rd best player on his team. Deng definitely shouldn’t be considered over Demar either way.

And I really want to see Kyle Lowry on there. He’s been playing MVP level ball since the Rudy Gay trade. No way they give the Raptors two spots though.
