JR Smith Says People Lack a Sense of Humor Regarding His Antics

New York Knicks guard JR Smith wishes people — fans, media, his employer — weren’t so uptight when it comes to his behavior. After all, he’s just goofing around. Per the NY Post:

Essentially, Smith showed little remorse and said he’s “extremely surprised” by the backlash against him.

“I see both sides of it,” said Smith at the morning shootaround at Temple, ahead of going 5-for-8 from the field in a 14-point effort as the Knicks cruised past the 76ers, 102-92.

“I’ve been doing it four, five years. I’ve only seen it from the joking side. It is what it is. I guess some people don’t have a sense of humor.” [...] “(Head coach Mike Woodson’s) been telling me [to grow up] since I got here,” Smith said. “Honestly, growing up I really don’t understand the true meaning of it. I’ve been misunderstood my whole life. It’s not going to change now.”

People stop laughing at a joke when they’ve heard it over and over again for 4-5 years straight.

  • Blue

Grow up = Shut up JR

I’ll let Woj handle this one,

  • LLC#12

99.99% of people who say they are “misunderstood” are just complete idiots who can’t get their heads around why people see them as complete idiots.

If the Knicks were leading the league in wins, and the team looked like a true championship contender, the stuff JR is pulling might be viewed differently. You don’t pull that crap when the team stinks.

  • Vince Gully

Hopefully JR Smith won’t become the next JR Rider.

Gilbert Arenas said the same thing, look where he is now.

  • i_ball

Still getting them check. He is out of the league mainly because of injuries. If he was still a 28 ppg scorer, even a 20 ppg scorer he would still be playing

You completely missed the point about people forcing their “humor” onto others and then saying they just don’t have a sense of humor or are just misunderstood.

  • Lloyd

Or when it wasn’t even funny at first.

  • Anthony

The NY Knicks management is to blame for this. They enabled him by the contract extension they gave him. JR may not understand “grow up” or “be professional” but one thing I’m sure he understands is DOLLARS and CENTS. NY you knew what you had when you signed him and made your proverbial bed so now lay in it.

  • spit hot fiyah

i think he lacks a sense of seriousness

  • i_ball

When Gilbert was on the court he was ballin and not goofing around, the Wizards were winning. Off the court you can try to be funny as much as you want, I personally liked most of the agent 0 stuff.

After the injuries it all went downhill for him…

  • First & Foremost

On court antics… Wade throws Mike Bibby’s shoe during live action of a playoff game. Not a word from the NBA. JR Smith unties a player’s shoe during a free throw, everyone loses their mind and the NBA fines him 1/2 of what Kobe got for calling an official a slur.

  • LP @ThisisEther

and don’t forget they gave him free “OPEN ROSTER SPOT” coupon to use on any family member of choice for a limited time….coupon expired on 12/31/13….

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    You know what that say…

  • Caboose

  • robb

J.R’s too dumb to understand anything. SMH

  • anon

Just to be clear – the league didn’t fine JR for untying a shoe. They warned him. They fined him for acting like he was going to do it AGAIN. The fine was for disregarding the warning.

I’m speculating here, but I think if Wade threw away someone’s shoe twice, he might be fined.

  • LakeShow

    What show is this from??!!

    Just playing, just playing!

Grew up on Screech and the gang lol.

  • LakeShow

    Indeed Smithers.

  • The Fury

There, he said it “he never understood” anything about being “mature” so leave him alone!! Okay JR you can return to your room under the stairs now…

  • Jerome

    Send him back to Charlotte.

I don’t know man. Where Woj may see Bishop and Q I see Harold and Kumar.
He doesn’t strike me as a fast talking inner city kid at all, but that might be just as presumptuous as Adrian’s article. I see a not so bright, lacking a mean streak, prone to bad judgment on and off the court goofball.

  • Jking-hoops

im happy that you posted in the big letters. J.R. Smith is so immature

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh I just posted a picture of text lol I have no control of how big it comes out

  • danpowers

there is nothing wrong about arenas’ or smith’ humor. what they dont get is the appropriate place and timing. you pull that sh*t in a pick up game or a pro am? fine, thats cool.

but during nba games, especially during a “shaky” season when fans spend/sacrifice way too much money for the teams they root for and a guy getting paid millions is putting games, other players health, etc at risk coz he clearly doesnt understand how blessed he is to be in the position he is: well, thats whats clearly f*cked up

  • danpowers

especially when he was / is one of the main reasons for his team stinking.

  • danpowers

yup, same like people bothering about how they are being judged by others or b*tching about their “haters”. just shows the dude got the mindset of a 12 year old

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

nobody called him a fast talking inner city kid. it’s just saying he does know exactly what he’s doing and why it’s wrong. he just chooses to act like he doesn’t. which is exactly what he is doing by saying he guesses everyone else doesn’t have a sense of humor. he’s absolving himself of responsibility that he knows falls on nobody other than himself.

  • danpowers

….and it shows on too many levels. anytime he steps on the court this season i feel like i need a drink

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

He calls him a con-man pretending to be an inner city tuff guy. Your talking about the middle part (the factual part) and I’m mostly referring to the opening and closing part (the authors opinion). I guess it all depends on how he interprets the behavior of inner city kids. I find the general distinction that he makes presumptuous. I’m in no way defending JR and his retarded and immature behavior. I just feel that Adrian has made an imaginary association that is inherently false. Probably flamed by the abundant tattoos and the loose uptown connections. His conclusion: JR is supposed to be smart but he prefers to act like a thug the likes of inner city kids. The opening sentence and closing ones are very revealing.
He maintains that because JR grew up in the suburbs (going to subpar academic schools btw) he should know what he’s doing. My opinion is that JR is a suburban nincompoop that clearly does NOT have the mental judgment to know what he’s doing half the time.
I propose his parents reveal his report cards going back to Millstone Middle school.

it seems like you are comparing “being educated” with “knowing the difference between right and wrong” — i agree with literally everything you are saying, i just am looking at it from the perspective that whether or not he is a dumbass, he still knows not to do this sh*t. it’s like a 6 year old who repeatedly keeps doing the opposite of what he’s told, all 6 year olds are freaking idiots, but that doesn’t mean they all don’t knowingly cross the line that their parents drew in the sand.

  • sim888

If it doesn’t exist already, a JR Smith drinking game needs to happen….wait, maybe it doesn’t.

  • sim888

    JR needs some PR.

  • danpowers

it does – drink a shot whenever jr takes a bad one. prepare to get an alcohol poisoning

  • sim888

2 shots for shoelace untie attempt

3 shots for a successful untie
    …you’re right, recipe for disaster.

  • just saying

man i don’t see the big deal either…he just trying to have fun while he out there. so what.

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

But how would he know not to do these things when his society has always granted him a pass. Even in the manslaughter case he got off with very little. He walks to his own crooked beat. Even after the recent fine he’s not faced. The suspension: one game and he’s back. He said benching was the worst feeling in the world. How can he say that when 6 years ago his actions killed his childhood friend and he spent 20 odd days in county? JR will never learn until the day his skills will erode. You’re right, he behaves exactly like a perpetual 6 yr old. My almost 6 yr old broke his sister’s pinky last night. It was an accident but he shows intrigue not remorse nor compassion. I feel like Mike Woodson. Not sure what the teachable moment should entail and if it will be effective.

  • Caboose

There is this drinking game I heard about (gotta be with beer though). Everybody picks one player. For every missed shot, turnover, or foul, you take a drink. For every made shot, assist, rebound, or block, or steal, you tell someone else to take a drink.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I mean, I don’t really know the guy, and obviously you have a good perspective on this, you could be right, maybe he’s never faced real consequences to his actions and thus has never learned the true implications of choosing right over wrong

  • danpowers

during november and december this wouldve led to several “death by drinking” cases among knicks fans lol

  • spottieottiedopaliscious

What’s woj and where’s this from?

  • spottieottiedopaliscious

    Never mind I got it.
