JR Smith Unsure of Future With the New York Knicks

After being benched last night during a nationally-televised win against the defending champion Miami Heat, JR Smith said he didn’t know if he had a future in Gotham. The New York Knicks have grown sick of his childish ways, and Smith is uncertain of what lies ahead. Per Newsday:

A day after the NBA fined him $50,000 for trying to untie the shoe of an opposing player in two consecutive games, Smith did not play a single minute in the Knicks’ 102-92 win over the Heat Thursday night. He seemed stunned by the whole turn of events, saying coach Mike Woodson hadn’t said anything to him before the game.

“There hasn’t been any discussion,” Smith said. “That’s the whole misleading part of it. I could see if I was told, but there was no conversation about it.”

When asked about his future in New York, Smith said: “Honestly, I don’t even know at this point. At one point, I was for sure, and now it’s rocking the boat. But it is what it is. It’s the nature of the business.”

Woodson, long one of Smith’s biggest supporters, refused to talk about him before or after the game, but he didn’t have to say a word to send a loud and clear message.

Advice to JR SMITH. Get out of the media. Get back in the gym.

I believe a coach should explain to his players why they are being benched. I don’t mean the scrubs that don’t play, but if you have a rotation guy like JR and you’re going to sit him out a whole game, I think you should tell him that and why. “Hey JR, you’re an immature idiot, so I’m gonna sit you tonight.”

You’re the head coach, he has to accept your decision, but an explanation is the right thing to do. The whole silent treatment thing is not professional in my opinion.

    Coming up.

“Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, a source with direct knowledge told Yahoo Sports. He kept ordering food, stacking piles of trays upon trays – “just to see if they would keep bringing it to the room,” the source said. All uneaten, all on the franchise’s tab.”

No he doesn’t. During the game when asked about this he said it was irrelevant. It’s about trying to win games. All the JR Smith shenanigans is too much to add to such a disappointing season. Woodson need to use what he’s got. All JR needs to do is stop letting the media be a part of his game. He’s gotta leave it on the floor. That’s it.
JR will play again soon. He didn’t deserve to play. It doesn’t deserve comment. Woodson need to win games and will utilise pieces that have positive impact on the game; not a detriment. Simple

I SEE THE FUTURE (In other words more caps)

The worst part about this situation is that HE STILL DOESN”T UNDERSTAND this has all been self inflicted. Woodson gave him unlimited range on the court and seen him as a cornerstone of the franchise. The coaching staff or managment don’t have to explain why they are on the outs with anymore at this point, all they have to look to is his immature actions from the past that they feel will produce future behavior.

A benching on the heels of a $50k fine and media attention on his outrageously poor shooting %….there is no way JR Smith is that slow and cannot connect the dots. There’s just no way….

I’m guessing Woodsen had a talk w/ JR about his behavior and the benching was understood. JR knows dam well why he’s sitting and if he can’t come to grips with it then I hope they keep his knucklehead ass glued to the bench.

ehhh …. in general i understand that POV, but if JR doesn’t understand why, or didn’t get that he would be sitting, then he’s a complete idiot.

  • Dfrance

Lol, I definitely don’t think JR is clueless as to why he’s benched, I’m just responding to him saying Woody didn’t say anything to him. Even if it’s implied, I think something should be said. Idk, I had a bad experience with this very thing so maybe thats where my way of thinking is coming from. lol

oh you were one of those guys huh? you get caught hitting on your coaches daughter fam?

No explanation is needed for a mature player. I was late getting on the bus to a game in college one time, AND left my game shoes in the hotel room. As a rotation player battling for minutes, I didn’t play one minute. coach didn’t say a word, and he didn’t have to. I already knew.

just like when Bill Belicek benches Stevan Ridley for fumbling 4 times in 3 games, Belicek doesn’t have to go over and tell em he’s benched. he knows, they’ve warned him multiple times. A explanation is NOT required for that situation, or for JR getting benched for doing dumb S&%T. Only way to get players attention is to give em that rude awakening. Bench em in a Nationally televised game against the champs.

and i hope ridley fumbles a few times this weekend also. go colts.

Lol, nah not even. Long story short, senior year I was on a coach approved “reduced practice plan” since I had a baby and was working overnight in addition to full time classes. Guess he got tired of the reduced practice and benches me, with no warning. Quit the team that night. smh

oh f*ck that, that is TOTALLY different than this JR Smith stuff. You got screwed over, JR Smith dressed up as a screw driver and screwed himself.

  • AndyK415

I see what you mean but he has been doing stuff that is even more dumb. I just read on yahoo and posted it that one night in a hotel room he ordered $3,000 worth of food and put it on the team’s tab just to see if the hotel would keep bringing him food. He just stacked the trays and didn’t even eat any of it.

he is such an idiot !

I wonder how things would turn out if JR somehow made it onto my Bulls, (not that I want this to happen), A coach like Thibs wouldn’t put up with any of his childish antics. Hell, let’s be honest, he would probably end up sitting every night or at the very best would just be garbage timing it.
