Knicks Reportedly Looking to Trade JR Smith

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Mere months into a new, three-year contract extension, the New York Knicks have already grown tired of JR Smith’s act.

According to multiple reports, the Knicks are exploring trade options for the embattled shooting guard, though getting rid of Smith will be tough, if not impossible.

Per ESPN and CBS Sports:

Sources close to the situation said Wednesday that the organization has become increasingly frustrated with Smith’s on- and off-the-court transgressions and may feel that a fresh start would be best for all parties. [...] Wednesday’s fine didn’t necessarily push the Knicks over the top, but one source with knowledge of the team’s thinking said the organization has become “fed up” with Smith’s erratic behavior.

But given Smith’s struggles this season — not to mention his lack of focus and seriousness — the Knicks’ attempts to trade him are proving even more difficult than the task of climbing out of their 12-22 hole.

“I hear Shanghai has a spot,” one rival GM said Wednesday when polled about potential takers for Smith.

Another executive, when asked about teams that might be interested, texted, “Erie?”

For what it’s worth, JR apologized for his latest gaffe via Twitter on Wednesday:

Smith, 28, is putting up just 11.3 points a night (way down from the 18.1 he posted last season as the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year) while shooting a grotesque 34.8% from the field.

    dudes about to get gilberted

I’m a Knicks fan but whoever didn’t see this team was going to be a circus the way it was shaping up this past summer doesn’t know basketball.

  • TriggaMan

Metaphorically speaking, he untied his own shoelaces and tripped over them..

  • Saleem Rainman

another untradable contract owned by the New York Knicks.

  • shockexchange

When asked about a JR Smith trade, one GM asked anonymously, “Is this April Fool’s Day?”

  • danpowers

dont do that to my hopes

  • danpowers

i was stupid to believe in smith last year during the regular season. but oh boy what a difference a summer makes. last season i would have taken smith over a guy like monta ellis any time of the day. today id be even fine if the knicks traded him for a scrub

Lmao you guys got Bargnani now :D

  • KSupreme

so….. will woodson play him tonight play him tonight and he will play motivated ball or will he be benched cause he’s an idiot….i need to know for draftstreet

  • RyanDeahn

He was focused last year. Probably the most he ever has been in his career and his stats proved it. Then he wins the the 6th man award and it all went to his head. He has regressed back to his old ways of showing flashes of brillance with to many instances of whacky behavior. Woodson has spoke several times about getting J.R. to mature and it seemed to be working up until this season. However it looks like the Knicks are stuck with him because no other GM wil want to put up with the headaches this guy causes. He’s a high risk high reward situation.

  • underdog

    Mission impossible.

  • retrobat

    JR Smith for Chris Smith?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i had to man. this is SLAM feeding off of the same nonsense that big media is. they can’t trade JR Smith for anything close to “equal value” — y’all are stuck with him.

  • Mike Gilbert

Won’t happen but JR Smith+2nd round pick for Ben Gordon seems fair

  • pposse

The Slam commentating alumni would do a better job running the Knicks. Does nba.com take resumes?

  • davidR

    *high risk, moderate reward

  • danpowers

    cancer for malaria? hmmm….

  • danpowers

    sad but true.

  • danpowers

no equal value needed. any scrub would do. the knicks wont go anywhere anyway this season, they should throw as many minutes as possible at murry, thj and shumpert to develop these guys.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’s still the best value contract on your roster outside of Melo (which is debatable). you don’t want to take a loss on that value knowing the rest of your cap is in handcuffs next year.

  • danpowers

who is doing suprisingly well tho

  • LP @ThisisEther

  • danpowers

(yeah i know, that one came at a cost way too hight and if that max extension goes down there will never be enough cap space to add enough quality to contend).

“knowing the rest of your cap is in handcuffs next year.”

but thats exactly the point. the team wont win anything, so why not develop the young guys. even if there are no future plans of keeping them they might develop some trade value by playing more minutes.
smith just takes these minutes away and turned out to be a team cancer after his nice season last year. i expect him to pick it up a little bit, but that wont make the knicks that much more competitve. the knicks front office should think basketball and sustainable just once instead of business.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

because, JR Smith on an expiring contract is not going to act like this…….his value is not going to get any lower lol

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

smith talent wise is top 5 sg,,,, he needs go to spurs or heat. ppl hated on beasley and now look at his per 36

  • danpowers

if he wont be banned from the nba by then anyway lol.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

top 5 sg talent just needs to be on the heat or spurs…… look how beasley is doing wit some discpline

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    guns versus untying shoes

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

nah knicks management… name top 5 potential gms on the boards

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    go away

  • pposse

top 5 gms? hmm..ME, Myself, Irene and everyone else posting on here on the regular are my top 5

  • pposse

but it all reality i would start to look at some of the proven scouts some of the teams have. I’m not versed in that part of the game at all, but owners might be better served if they stop looking to fill front office or even coaching roles with former players

  • danpowers

well, eddy curry used to be a top 5 center talent wise. but in pro sports its not only about talent.

well, IF any organization could set him straight, itll be the spurs, bulls or heat. but then again, i used to think that being on a team with kobe bryant and an owner like buss could set a knucklehead straight… and then came the dwightmare reloaded lol

  • Ugh

He means Dan Gilberted. Dolan will send a post-trade tirade in Wing Dings font promising that the Knicks will win a championship before the [trade destinaton] do.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    As Salamu Alaykum ikwa

  • Fitzy

    yeah he’s been a real defensive rock…

  • Jonin

Wa? Top 5 sg? Heat?? Spurs??? Dude. This is your most asinine comment yet, and that’s saying something…

  • Jonin

I would have said the same; but he was GOOD versus MHeat. It’s not enough to sway me & say yes I like him, but for the first time I saw promise. ; he has a solid jump pop from the baselione that’s better than Bosh, or on par with at least. As an ex number one pick considered a bust if he gets some confidence (like it looks like he had) and gets some coaching tips on how to react in the clutch, then there’s promise for him.

On another note, It looks to me like when Melo gives it to Felton he never thinks he’s getting it back….

  • Interdico Scriptor

Yr the new crazy guy on the site now. THEY’RE NOT TRADING SMITH. It’s a bluff to keep him in check…. nothing more…
    Don’t believe the hype.

  • Interdico Scriptor

Why why why did they pay so much for Amare? Seriously??

  • Interdico Scriptor

I said JCraw was a better 6 when he was second to Smith last year. Crawford is pretty bloody good in the 6th man role. He’s sustained it again this year.

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Top 5 sg talent not top 5 sg

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

Crawford is god but talent wise jr hasn’t even attempted to really dedicate himself and see how good he can be.

    He’s capable 20 ppg scorer

JR Smith just needs a good mental tune-up is all.

  • Interdico Scriptor

No way is JR capable of being BETTER THAN HE EVER WAS. GET OVER IT.
The Knicks pay him more than he’s gonna get anywhere else; plus NO ONE WOULD BE CRAZY ENOUGH TO TAKE HIM. ADAM MORRISON HAS A BETTER CHANCE.
Apologies about capslock but u get the point

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

because they thought Phoenix was overreacting about his knees, and they thought he was the type of player that would help them win consistently for a few years. really their only mistake with Amar’e is not realizing that Phoenix’s witch doctors aka training staff, know what the f*ck they are doing.

  • AndyK415

    Check out this story:

“Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a
room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, a source with direct
knowledge told Yahoo Sports. He kept ordering food, stacking piles of
trays upon trays – “just to see if they would keep bringing it to the
room,” the source said. All uneaten, all on the franchise’s tab.”

  • bike

JR is the spawn of that bottom-feeding, boil-sucking weasel of an owner named Dolan.

  • danpowers

he will never be a good weak side defender or monster in the paint. but he is a better one on one defender than i expected. he is also quite good on offense. not the guy i wouldve wished for to have on the knicks, but the team has worse issues to deal with
