LeBron, Durant and Kobe Headline NBA All-Star Starters

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Starting lineups for the NBA’s midseason bonanza were announced Thursday night — the East and West lineups feature some familiar faces, and a few surprises.

Despite pleading with fans to vote for younger, healthier players, Kobe Bryant was picked to hoop in his 16th NBA All-Star Game, while Steph Curry will make the first start of his career.

From the press release:

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors will start in his first NBA All-Star Game, having secured the top spot among Western Conference backcourt players after the final returns of NBA All-Star Balloting 2014 presented by Sprint. Curry (1,047,281) is joined in the West backcourt by the L.A. Lakers’ Kobe Bryant (988,884), who was selected to play in his 16th All-Star Game, second all-time behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (19). LeBron James of the Miami Heat was the leading overall vote-getter with 1,416,419 votes, followed closely by Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who finished with 1,396,294 votes.

James, an All-Star for the 10th time in 11 seasons, is joined in East’s frontcourt by the Indiana Pacers’ Paul George (1,211,318) and the New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony (935,702). The Heat’s Dwyane Wade (929,542) and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving (860,221) comprise the Eastern Conference’s starting backcourt. Wade is also making his 10th trip to the All-Star Game in 11 seasons.

Durant, who earned his fifth All-Star nod, is joined in the frontcourt in the West by the L.A. Clippers’ Blake Griffin (688,466) and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Kevin Love (661,246), who overtook the Houston Rockets’ Dwight Howard for the final starting frontcourt spot in the West. It’s the fourth straight All-Star nod for Griffin, while Love is set to play in his third All-Star Game.

Reserves will be announced Thursday, Jan. 30 on TNT.

The 63rd NBA All-Star Game takes place Sunday, Feb.16 in New Orleans.

    KLove over Dwight?! Hell yes!
Kyrie over Wall is a crime though…

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

Yeah that says a lot with KLove. The media always hypes up the general hate a player has received. Dwight and Lebron were supposedly universally hated by fans but always got a ton of votes. But, it appears Dwight might be on the downslide.

  • JJ Jones

Yeah because people have figured out that he’s just good not great he doesnt have the right mindset.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

No, he’s still great. He’s just not as popular as he was.

  • ScrewT

Dwight got robbed, Kobe in is a joke.

NBA fans lose again on voting.

  • robb

    Really? Let’s see:

    PPG
    Love: 25.0
    Dwight: 18.3

    RPG
    Love: 13.0
    Dwight: 12.6

    APG
    Love: 4.1
    Dwight: 1.8

I see no robbery here. Besides, this is a popularity contest and Dwight’s not very popular right now

  • Coolstorybro

He’s not great, but he’s always had the potential to be. The problem with him is that he acted like a super star before living to the expectations. Orlando was counting on this guy to deliver a championship, but instead he got coughs up with his head in his a**.

  • ATL dynamite

I’m not defending Dwight but the top PF in the league not making a single playoff appearance yet isn’t great either

  • JJ Jones

Im sorry but there is nothing great about dwight howard right now. The only thing that WAS great about him was his potential but he has made little to no improvements in his game since 2009. His back injury is partly responsible for that though.

  • JJ Jones

He’ll get there eventually but right now he’s better than dwight howard without question. What you lose in defense he makes up for with even better rebounding and FREE THROWS

  • Nathan Shane Long

This year proves that fans should be banned for voting the all-star starters all these Kobe d*ckriding brainwashed idiots that made him a starter should commit suicide because they have no life!!!!!! only the press&media should be allowed to vote for all star starters and LeBron being named is a starting center is unreal is the center position that terrible in the east why is Roy Hibbert not starting at his position that a F’N JOKE the all-star game is just a glorified AAU ALL-STAR GAME

  • Armando

If anyone was robbed it was Aldridge.

  • hashzz

Almost identical to his stats with the Lakers….glad “kobe” isn’t taking those shot attempts away hehehe…Dwight is who he is, a great defender, rebounder, not so great offensively

  • hashzz

This isn’t ALL NBA, it’s the all star game, will always and forever be a popularity contest. If players are truly the BEST at their position, then make ALL NBA. Much harder to do consistently.

  • KipSmithers

We need the UK trifecta of Cousins, Wall, and Davis as back-ups.

  • brothasdontsurf

The real question is who will take Kobe’s spot? I think Damian Lillard has earned that spot, considering how well the Blazers have started off. It will most likely go to James Harden though.

  • Chester

and you are an even bigger of a joke. stop being so negative and enjoy the game lil nathan lol

  • Busta213

They did away with the center position – its 3 front court + 2 back court.
Its the fans game – if the fans want Kobe then why is that an actual problem? The commisioner will pick a replacement, problem solved.

  • JJ Jones

Yeah damn that kobe from taking shots from the offensive prodigy dwight howard! Hes such a master in the post that he scores below league average from the post! Damn u kobe u selfish bastard! (Facepalm)

  • Nathan Shane Long

Kobe making the all-star team this year is worse than Jordan making in 02-03

  • Busta213

Ive always said Dwight is quite happy being the second option – but in the games where he is hot and playing well, he wants to continue to get touches. That wasnt always the case when playing with no. 24. Simple as that.

  • mmm

He gets a lot of selfish defensive rebounds tho.

  • Puddin’

Not if your name is Kobe Bryant. Look no further than the travesty that has been All NBA Defensive voting for the past 7 seasons.

  • i_ball

I want the center position back in the ballot. I know it’s an exhibition game but I doubt any coach will ever star 2 guards and 3 small forwards even in preseason. And it’s not like the Center position is week this year. You have (in no order) Boogie, Hoah, Hibbert, Howard, Jordan, Drummond, Hawes, Gasol.

I’m not saying any of them is better than the current starters but the way you can at least guarantee some balance in the starting line-ups – 1 big guy.

  • Busta213

Well thats not totally true – he was the best defensive big man in the league when in Orlando – his help defense was excellent. Watching the Rockets, I dont see the same level of defensive play from him. It may well still be the back issue.

Also, being a 3 time DPOY and five time all pro 1st teamer is about more than just potential.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

considering Houston’s team defensive rating is 106, and the only other starter outside of Dwight with a D-Rating below 106 (it’s 103) is Terrence Jones…….
    .
Dwight’s defensive rating of 100 renders Houston (typically the 15th ranked defense) a top 3 defense when he’s on the floor…….

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dwight plays defense, Kevin Love is literally (and factually) the worst rim protector in the league. Plus, Dwight’s team is winning a lot. Kevin Love’s team is not.

  • Busta213

Interesting stuff. Thats better than I wouldve guessed. Would you happen to know how his Orlando teammates (e.g. the finals squad) compared defensively to his current teamamates?

  • TR

In Love’s defense (no pun intended), hes not getting paid for his defense…Plus not too many dudes at 6’9 with his athleticism are gonna be great rim protectors.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

in the season Orlando got to the finals, both in the regular season and playoffs, the closest starter in Defensive Rating to Dwight Howard was 8 points worse.
    .
In the regular season Dwight’s D-Rating was 95
    — The closest teammate among starters? 103
    .
    In the playoffs Dwight’s D-Rating was 98
    — The closest teammate among starters? 106
(the only player better than 106 outside of Dwight was Marcin Gortat….who only played 11mpg)

  • Busta213

But that wasnt worse than Penny making it in 98!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s not getting paid for his defense? you get paid a max salary to not be a great all around player? and i’m supposed to let his height and lack of athleticism substitute for defense? being undersized and unathletic is not a weakness, but a strength that takes the place of defense?
    .
    no.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Jordan averaged 20-5-5 in 02-03, and was a coaches selection. nitwit.

  • TR

Melo has a max deal and plays no defense. Kobe just got a deal and plays no defense. I’m not saying his lack of defense should be discounted rather that his offense is where his value comes. I dont cut the checks brotha.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the point is, it’s not about what he’s getting paid to do. or what limitations he has. if he has a glaring weakness that makes him worse than his offense would indicate, that should matter. The reason people think Dwight got snubbed is because he’s a better player and he’s more deserving than Kevin Love to start in the all star game.

  • TR

I could understand that, but until they get rid of fan voting we cant say anyone got snubbed.

  • Busta213

Thanks I appreciate that. I think that fits in with what I was expecting.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well we can say they got snubbed, it’s just a meaningless exercise to waste time…..

  • JJ Jones

I meant what people expected him to be by now offensively but your right the back surgery was probably the main issue

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    glad i could help

  • JJ Jones

    True

  • Nathan Shane Long

On a bad irrelevant Wizards team you dumb troll he made the all-star team that year as a career tribute basically

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

or he was a worthy all star reserve for a team that while still bad, was much better than it should have been. you were what, 6 that year?

  • Nathan Shane Long

Who else was gonna score on that team KWAME F’N BROWN come on he was an all-star that year as a tribute to his last season in the league

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Jerry Stackhouse averaged 21ppg and was actually their leading scorer.

  • Nathan Shane Long

LOL what would you trolls do without GOOGLE

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the same thing? i didn’t have to use google nathan, i have a good memory.

  • Nathan Shane Long

    you’re lying straight up

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    you’re*
    .
believe whatever you want. there is some stuff i have to look up, but other things i don’t. i have no reason to lie.

  • Nathan Shane Long

yeah right you have such a good memory you remember meaningless stats from 12 seasons ago troll please by the time i posted the comment till your reponse (5 minutes) was the time used to “GOOGLE UP” those stats

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

or i’m just working, not waiting for your comments? i mean, it took you 6 minutes to say all he had was Kwame Brown, does that mean you used google and failed? lol, you don’t think much through before you say it do you?

  • Nathan Shane Long

“working” as in staying at home doing nothing as usual right? just admit you used google no big deal troll it was either that or one of those basketball data websites you nerds love to use

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i wish i could stay at home, but i have to keep a job to pay the bills.
    .
i really don’t have a reason to lie, i did look up that Wizards team a couple weeks ago for someone making a similarly ignorant argument about Jordan “being voted” onto the All Star team. But that person had a better argument then you do, they just mistook how/why Jordan qualified as an all star that year.

  • Nathan Shane Long

What argument every one know who can remember that all-star weekend 2003 in Atlanta was just one big Michael Jordan tribute

  • JoeMaMa

The All Star selections are for the fans.
The All NBA Selections are for the players.
And the trophy’s for the winners!!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

they did do a tribute to MJ. But that was not why he made the all star team.

  • Nathan Shane Long

Yes it is Jordan could have averaged 10 ppg and still would have been an all-star

  • TR

    haha, i feel

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

based on your imagination? i don’t operate in fantasy land nathan. the fact remains he was one of the 12 best players in the Eastern Conference that season, and deserved his all star spot. Regardless of the tribute.

  • QTR

so what it was cool he ended up hitting that buzzer beater

  • pposse

that center list looks like it is perfectly in order

  • robb

nbk man, why are you even arguing with this guy?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

during that conversation i was actually on hold at work trying to get some pricing. i was extremely bored.

  • LakeShow

Boredom can cause us to do very stupid things.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yes it can

  • 2chainz
  • 2chainz

All Stars are not based on team wins but individual performance and fan voting…not the players fault if he is on a bad team.

  • http://kingakai.com/ Alpha-bet

I think Dwight not getting in as a Starter has more to do with the Center position being wiped off the ballot than him being ‘not liked’ or whatever. Simple as that.

  • Evan Boland

    You’re an idiot

  • Evan Boland

You’re stupid he was definitely an all-star that year.

  • COYNE

Oh yeah and he’s Michael Jordan, so even if you’re right, which you’re not, why not pay tribute to him while he’s still around? You’re the biggest moron on this website.

  • The Seed

If Kobe played all year, he would be an All Star, not to dumb by fans in my opinion. Really what shooting guards in the West have stood out. Also Dwight is playing average this year, he is doing nothing different that last year with the Lakers. Houston will be put out in the 1st round, Dwight will speak slow, blame others, eventually Harden will call Dwight out, then he will want a trade to Brooklyn. I love Curry being on the All star team, he is probably the best person to watch in the NBA right now, he just has to improve on turnovers.

  • Dagger

I guess it’s just too bad that there’s no shooting guard position on the all-star ballot.

  • Armando

How ’bout making it 1 point guard, 2 wings and 2 bigs(ish) players… And/or you choose from all players, regardless of listed position who plays which position, distinguishing between PG, SG, SF, PF, C. For example, if you select James as one of your wings, or as your SF you can’t select him as a big, or PF. Like when the coaches select the reserves they’re allowed to pick players out of position if the player is able to man the position and they feel it would benefit the game as well as give room to players who would be snubbed because a less deserving player plays the position… If a player leads the race at two positions he wins the spot where he’s got the most votes and the no. 2 at the other position gets that spot? …The thinking man’s east starters would then look like this: James, Wade, George, Anthony, Hibbert… West: Paul, Parker, Durant, Love, Aldridge…

  • pposse

a major part of defense is securing the defensive play with a defensive rebound. Love fills that void, he may not be a stellar defender but he does finish off the possessions

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

By not attempting to stop shots at the rim. He hurts your defense, grabbing defensive rebounds should be a function of the teams defense. Not as an aspect of one players selfish desire to rack up numbers despite the fact that it hurts the team as a whole.

  • pposse

By not attempting to stop shots at the rim. He hurts your defense, – ofcourse agreed

but the last part of your statement is ridiculous. Your basically assuming that if it isn’t Kevin Love getting the rebound then someone else will. Thats absurd.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Have you ever played organized basketball? All a defensive rebound is, is the product of a successful defensive possession. Which is a product of 5 players working together. Teams shoot f*cking 47% against Minnesota. Good to be dead last in the NBA. This is a result of how easy it is to score in the paint against the Wolves. Because their big men value a rebound on a possible miss more than actually forcing the other team to miss a shot. By only focusing on rebounds, you have one player openly saying he doesn’t trust his teammates to rebound. 4 out of 5 (in Minnesota’s case it’s 3 our of 5 because Pekovic is just as much of a disaster) people committed to all aspects of defense is never going to work. Especially if that player is your best one.

  • pposse

yes i did. The twolves are the third best rebounding team in the league right now, so they must be doing something right.
the wolves might not have the personnel to be a great defensive team, but your trying to make it seem like its all K Loves fault cause of his selfishness, like K Love can’t make other teams better, that they will somehow regress with him.

The real problem is that the wolves are playing 4 on 5 on the offensive end seeing as how Rubio deserves zero respect to actually shoot the ball. Your best defensive weapon is having a good offense.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol you are a bulls fan and you just said the ignorant nonsense? All I’m saying is, Kevin Love is worse than Dwight Howard because he hurts your defense. Not your team, but your defense. .

Portland outscored Minnesota 60-46 in the paint. – last night.
    .
And btw, Minnesota averages is 3rd in offensive rebounding and 15th in defensive rebounding. 15th. It’s pretty impossible to be a top 3 rebounding team if your opponent makes more of their shots then any other team in the league. Which should be common sense.

  • pposse

other teams respect everyone on the bulls to make their open jumpers. Seeing as how bball is a nonstop sport where you flow from o to d at all times our defense benefits from the offense that is run because the ball gets passed around and defenders have to expend energy to close in on potential shots which ultimately helps weaken the opposing teams offense.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol Chicago is 2nd in defense, and 27th on offense. 28th in FG%. Just stop while you are way off.

  • pposse

so does that mean other defenses dont respect our offense and just slack on that end of the floor? stats don’t measure everything, try watching games or stay ‘way off’

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol you keep trying to rationalize that your defense is reliant on a good offense while living in the same city who has proven that false for the last 4 straight years. But that’s cute, the whole watch the games argument. .
“I have nothing to actually say, so obviously you don’t watch the games” .
Have a good Sunday, don’t give yourself a headache. .

  • pposse

the offensive system is just fine, executing is the hard part since Rose is not available. You keep trying to push Howard to something he is not plain and simple. One day you say he should have been MVP for making a mediocre team good, now he’s on a good team and the team is only 5th in the WCF, in which i told you that its 50 times harder to make a good team great…and DH is just proving that 10 pts an 12 rebs just yesterday ha haa against a C who is is supposedly his competition for best in the game if he aint aready

  • pposse

and btw the way thats not how you use quotations since i didnt say that, it just exemplifies how you constantly try putting words in someone else’s mouth. You want me to say those things? is that it? Even your first sentence was off, like you can’t even read what i just wrote or something.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

“Your best defensive weapon is having a good offense”

  • pposse

yup thats what i said, NOT “i have nothing to say” – is that what you want me to think? cause it sure looks like it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Oh man you are slow

  • pposse

not really, not really at all. And if you can’t infer when i said your best defensive weapon is having a good offensive SYSTEM (which is what i mean to say) then in fact you are slow. Coffee might help idk

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    Lol

  • The Seed

Answer the question, what shooting guards in the West have stood out.

  • Dagger

No need to answer that question. The real question for all-star positions: what guards in the West have stood out.

  • Interdico Scriptor

Unremarkabley, yr right. However it is a question of poularity, and Howard’s fall from popular grace is a factor.
I would take Love over Dwight in a starting 5 anyhoo… but what do I know?

  • Interdico Scriptor

True again. Would Love be better in LA?

  • Interdico Scriptor

    ha

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i don’t think he’d be individually a better player, but i think they could do a better job a building a roster around him. he’s a great player, but his weaknesses need to be made up for with the rest of his roster. and in Minnesota, they are not even sort of doing that.
