Nicolas Batum Says He Should Be an NBA All-Star

Damian Lillard and LaMarcus Aldridge are likely headed to the big game in Nola next month, and according to Nic Batum, the Portland Trail Blazers deserve a third representative: himself. Batum feels he’s earned an All-Star nod with his play so far this season. Per CSNNW:

Nicolas Batum is averaging 13.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists for the season and is Portland’s most versatile defender. He has two triple-doubles and has fallen just short for more a handful of time this season.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard are virtual locks to be in New Orleans playing on that Sunday. So when asked Saturday night if he feels like he deserves to be an All-Star, the small forward didn’t hesitate to give you his thoughts.

“Yes, of course,” Batum said. “If they have to pick one small forward behind K.D. (Kevin Durant), I think it should be me.”

Why?

“Because of the numbers that I have and the way I play with this team,” he responded. “I got two triple-doubles and I should have about five or six. And we’re 31-9, maybe the best team in the West so far. I think it’ll be tough to get three All-Stars because Damian and L.A. are going to be in it. And our coach, too. But I deserve consideration.”

There’s still more games left to play for Batum to make his case but he says if Portland finishes as the top team in the conference heading into the All-Star break, he believes Portland should be awarded with three representatives.

“If we’re in first, yes, I believe we should get three,” Batum said. “If I do, I would be proud to represent Rip City and France.”

Um… Nope! “Because of the numbers that I have…” C’mon, Man! 13, 6, and 7 (rounding up) are not All-Star-calibre numbers in any league. Calmes-toi, Nicolas.

  • Guest

Oh man… You need to score 20 or more points a game to become an all-star. And give us moves man!

  • Foxx Dot PH

Oh man… You need to score 20 or more points every game to become an all-star. And give us moves man!

  • JML-G

maybe yea, but Portland already got two allstars this season in Aldrigde and Lillard (somebody needs to get shot in groin if one of them gets snubbed), so Batum got no chances

  • Slick Ric

Damn, I didnt know he was averaging that many assist this season. Quite impressive…

  • Harvey

    I agree.

  • JJ Jones

    Um no.

  • Drig

Well…….if you were in the East…….maybe.

  • LakeShow

    “13.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists”

Switch the assists and rebounds. It should read 5.6 assists and 6.8 rebounds.

Honestly, I just wish he was at 15ppg. If he was, I’d be all on board. But you don’t normally get into the All-Star game by being a swiss army knife.

In addition, his points steals and blocks are down from last year. He is only averaging .9 steals, and .7 blocks. So his immediate numbers don’t make the cut, but team success and importance should play a part, and for that reason I wouldn’t be upset if he made it.

  • Reedan Seven

Is marijuana legal in Portland yet?! #JusAskin

  • SWIFTboy

Wesley Matthews has been playing just as well as Batum, which makes it even more likely that neither will make it.

He’s playing great team ball though, and should be happy with his teams success even if he doesn’t make the ASG.

  • John Rances

i don’t get it, statistically he and Lance Stephenson are having identical seasons and he is considered a legit All-Star calibur player so why not Nico? I’m not saying he is, I’m just saying he should be considered.

  • LakeShow

“I got two triple-doubles and I should have about five or six.”

No, you got two. You should have two.

  • Caboose

Nope. Here’s my All Star Teams

    West:
Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeMarcus Cousins

Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Dwight Howard, Damian Lillard

    East:
John Wall, Dwyane Wade, Paul George, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony

Andre Drummond, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, Luol Deng, Arron Afflalo, Al Jefferson, Roy Hibbert

WOW the East team is sh!t compared to the West.

As for Batum, there are still a BUNCH more guys who should make it ahead of him who are NOT on my reserve list:

Tony Parker, Isaiah Thomas, Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis, then MAYBE Batum.

He’s so far outside of being an All Star in the West, it’s ridiculous.

  • Caboose

    1. Lance Stephenson isn’t an All Star.
    2. East vs West. The worst player on the West squad is gonna be….Damian Lillard? James Harden? The worst player on the East is gonna be someone like Al Jefferson. BIG difference.

  • Caboose

Lake, check out this list of guys (I posted them above)
    Paul
    Curry
    Durant
    Aldridge
    Cousins
    Westbrook
    Howard
    Harden
    Love
    Davis
    Griffin
    Lillard

    That’s 12.

If you wanted to swap some out, you could make a case for Tony Parker or Dirk Nowitzki, but Batum is NOWHERE near the guys on that list. Same for freaking Wes Matthews too.

  • Caboose

What the f*ck are you talking about? Guys who have STARTED with under 20ppg in just the past 3 years.

    1. Paul
    2. Rondo
    3. Garnett
    4. Dwight
    5. Bynum

I haven’t even gotten into reserves.

  • Max

Because Lance plays in the East and Batum in the West.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Dirk is having such an extremely good year ……. i’d leave off Kevin Love (just kidding) —–> Westbrook gotta go.

  • Caboose

I’ve got nothing wrong with that, Russ has missed a lot of games.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Al Jefferson should not make the all star team LOL, Kemba Walker has been the best player on that team. And Al’s taking 16 shots to score 18 points EVERY SINGLE GAME.

  • Caboose

Fair, fair. I know you REALLY hate Big Al lol.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well….people think he’s an all star. i don’t hate him, just like i don’t hate Monta Ellis…..i just don’t like the over inflated reputation these guys gain by putting up scoring numbers.

  • Caboose

Alrighty. Well my East team is above, what would yours look like?

  • LakeShow

Absolutely. I wasn’t speaking in terms of him being a better player than anyone you mentioned, as much as I was saying that he could possibly get the nod due to PDX’s success.

But like I said, he would have to be at 15ppg at least for me to be on board. He’s undeserving.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well my Eastern team would need to represent the conference as a whole, so……

    Starters:
    - Derrick Rose
    - JR Smith
    - Josh Smith
    - Larry Sanders
    - Andrew Bynum

with a bench of Heat and Pacers players.

  • spit hot fiyah

well actually he is the best at shooting guys in the groin

  • King David

Melo should’ve been MVP last year, Knicks should’ve beat the Pacers last year, Celtics should’ve beat Lakers in 2010, Iverson should’ve had Shaq for 8 years !
COULDA SHOULDA WOULDA but didnt happen…………

  • Lloyd

    Demar Derozan?

  • Caboose

Ehhh….maybe. Prolly take Kemba over him though. Maybe.

  • Lloyd

Demar’s having a great season and the Raps are 3rd in the East. Demar should be on that list over Afflalo, Deng, and Walker for sure. And Al Jefferson shouldn’t even be in consideration.

  • King David

DAYUMMM the East is HOT GARBAGE starting with #6 from the Heat and their bench oh god !!!

  • King David

    PREACH brother !

  • Caboose

I suppose. I’d still take Afflalo and Deng over him, but sure, I’d put him over Al.

  • danpowers

agree on these players except you being too low on jefferson. the bobcats were total garbage without him. now they look at least like a basketball team and his presense down low has a lot to do with that.

  • Caboose

It’s his god awful efficiency I think that people are taking umbrage to. He’s had a good impact, but he’s a stat machine, not a winner.

  • danpowers

you are right about walker being the best player on the cats, but jefferson is a big reason why they look like an nba team now. b4 him they were a joke. he could do better down low and on d, but his positive impact on that squad is pretty obvious imo. in the weak east he should at least be under all star consideration

  • Caboose

That West All Star Team is looking like one of the best in a LONG LONG time.

  • danpowers

come on, batum is one of those guys that you cant rate with stats. at least not primarily. he just plays the right way and could easily put up more points if he was asked to. that blazers team is fun to watch and batum is one of their main guys. i know there are a handfull players better than him who will most likely make the cut. it would just not be that unfair if he would make the team for whatever reason.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

ehh, they are 17-25, 3-12 in their last 15….hardly a positive impact, they just started pretty strong, not unlike last year.

  • lies

And one of them was vs the spurs like the first week of the season and he had like only 7 points or 8 i forgot, but there was only like 3 seconds left in the game and portland already won but he still shot it from halfcourt and it went in. big disrespect to the spurs.

    so he should have 1

  • plz

also throw in chandler parsons in there too with batum. those two are playing very similar with similar stats

  • plz

and in my opinion i would put demar derozan before kyle lowry even though lowry was better stats but derozan has been the face of the raptors post rudy gay era so far.

  • BigAl#13

Derozan’s averages in the standard categories are career-high 21.3 points, 4.5
rebounds and 3.6 assists. That outs him in the argument for one of the best shooting guards in the league. He should be an All-star 100%.

  • Lloyd

Just because they’re better on paper than last year, doesn’t mean he’s an all star. He’s not even close. Kemba Walker is the best player on that team.

  • LakeShow

“batum is one of those guys that you cant rate with stats.”

    Agreed.

Hence: “but team success and importance should play a part, and for that reason I wouldn’t be upset if he made it.”

    whooops, my bad

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    THEY ARE TERRIBLE

  • danpowers

i may have to differ: he could be an all star in the east this year. i wouldnt be too upset about it. i didnt argue that walker is the best guy on this team. but without jefferson this team wouldnt be competitive, walker is not ai, jordan or durant. cant argue that they are not as half as competitive without jefferson. that says more about the weak east / bobcats than about jeffersons individual quality tho.

  • danpowers

can we please count injuries as factors for their recent struggles? at least more than last year. even when they lose, they look much less like a dleague team with jefferson than they did without him. this also requires walker on the team tho, he is no doubt their main guy. as soon as walker is back, with mkg back at 100% they will clearly finish the season better than they did last year.

  • brothasdontsurf

I don’t think that matters too much in Oregon guy

  • danpowers

he is not tim duncan or pre-dwightmare howard, but at least they look like an nba team now. even when they lose lol

  • danpowers

they are a terrible nba team now. last year they were a terrible d-league team lol

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol fair, but that doesn’t make Al an all star

  • danpowers

this year in the east? i mean, magloire made the cut in the 2000s. why shouldnt make al jefferson the cut in a vintage east? lol
sorry, i cant take that league serious after what ive went through with my team this year. sometimes you gotta laugh if you dont want to cry.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Oh I posted my east all stars below. You can see how seriously I take that conference

  • danpowers

just saw it now, love it lol

  • brothasdontsurf

    Just for fun…
My What the Fu(n)ck?! All-Stars (Post Merger)

    PG: BJ Armstrong
SG: Cedric Ceballos (Same with the Dunk Contest win)
    SF: Wallace Szczerbiak
    PF: Chris Gatling
    C: Jamaal Magloire

Bench: Chris Kaman, James Donaldson, Danny Ainge, Hersey Hawkins, Otis Thorpe, and finally “Some people call me Maurice” Mo Williams.

  • Jake

I definitely can see him being in the discussion but I don’t think he’s quite there yet. Bump up the PPG and he’ll be there within the next 2 years. One of the problems is that the Blazers only have one really noticeable player, even with the emergence of Lilliard. The fans simply won’t vote someone like Batum into the ASG when they never see him on tv, as sad as that is.

  • Foxx Dot PH

Man, i mean is that they so many great player than Batum and you line it to Paul, Rondo, Garnett, Dwight and Bynum? Din’t include Bynum. Haha. Only 24 Players can join to an allstar team and i think, he need to give more moves to impress people and become his fan.

  • Foxx Dot PH

The 5 players your talking about have a moves even they not score 20 points or more.

  • idk

The funny thing is, he said if they had to pick One SMALL FORWARD behind KD then it should be him. Looking at the typical small forwards in the Western Conference, I think he has a good case. All these lists you guys are making only include one small forward and that’s Durant…

  • Lloyd

Again though, just because his presence may make them less terrible than last year, doesn’t mean he should be an all star. Compared to all the other players are playing at all star levels this year, he’s overshadowed.

“Compared to all the other players” i was just reflecting on bigs in the east. there are not really that many all star no brainers. when it comes to overall play, sure, even his teammate kemba comes to mind when picking guys over him.
still i wouldnt judge him as harshly as the efficiency fetishists in here do

  • iceman

@disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus ic the numbers but we all know they don’t tell the hole story and most of us only look at offensive prowess for entrance into all star status, I haven’t seen his d, does his d make up for his numbers?

  • Coop NAsT

Gordon Hayward over Batum any day. If you disagree you’re stupid and unAmerican

  • davidR

i think what he’s trying to say is, unless you’re a fan favorite, you need to score at least 20 ppg to have some all star buzz

  • ATL dynamite

If it turns out that Lance Stephenson gets in with similar numbers and being the 3rd player of the no.1 team in the east….. your claim would be easily refuted

  • ATL dynamite

talking about hate, there’s more hate if you take al Jefferson over millsap

  • Nathaniel Shields

Correct. Born Ready is also far from All-Star Ready.

  • ATL dynamite

Agreed. Too soon to put him on that map yet

  • Lloyd

Speaking about just Eastern bigs, Roy Hibbert, David West, Andre Drummond, Al Horford, and Joakim Noah should be considered before him.

You should. Taking 17 shots to get 18 points is horrible by any standard.

  • DJ_BobbyPeru

    Ummm, no.

  • therichardkirby

If not for some questionable calls that went the Lakers way in the last few games of the season, Jefferson would’ve had the Jazz in the playoffs last year in a crowded West.

  • Reedan Seven

Thinking he must have been high as hell during that itw … All Star? NOT! I don’t see coaches giving him a ticket to New Orleans.

  • Foxx Dot PH

Okay man. I’m just saying the truth and read some comments. We’re all have own ideas/reaction/belief.

  • Saleem Rainman

    agree. dirks been great.

  • t31

ridiculous, maybe is he is averaging a 25 6 6 stat line and if his FG% is high and hes active defensively forget about it.
