USA Basketball Announces 28-Man Roster

usa_roster

USA Basketball released 28 names to its initial roster on Thursday, the first step in a process that will ultimately determine who represents the United States in the 2014 World Championships and the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. Check out are the players in the running (H/T Ballislife):

Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks), LeBron James (Miami Heat), Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers), Deron Williams (Brooklyn Nets), Tyson Chandler (New York Knicks), Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), James Harden (Houston Rockets), Andre Iguodala (Golden State Warriors), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves), Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder), Dwight Howard (Houston Rockets), Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers), Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards), DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons), Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets), Paul George (Indiana Pacers), Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), Kyle Korver (Atlanta Hawks), David Lee (Golden State Warriors), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio Spurs), Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers), Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors)

Following the announcement, USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo gave his take on what this means in the bigger scheme of things.

“This is the first step of building the USA Basketball National Team pool of players for 2014-16. This roster is extremely talented, deep and versatile,” said Colangelo. “We are very fortunate to have 11 of the 12 members who won gold at the London Olympics wanting to be part of the national team program again. To receive that kind of commitment is remarkable and it demonstrates how much it means to our players to represent USA Basketball and their country.

“Continuity and familiarity with international basketball are critical parts in our success, and between our coaching staff and these 28 players we certainly have that. Every one of the selected players has been involved in USA Basketball previously and that speaks to how well our pipeline is working. Because of injuries and circumstances that will develop where players won’t be able to participate, we know we need flexibility with the roster and as we did in 2006-08 and 2010-12, the pool of players will be fluid, so you will see the addition of players as they emerge and as they are needed,” continued Colangelo.

“Our first challenge will be the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup that is being held in Spain. With 24 teams competing for the world title, including host Spain who we have had memorable games against in the last two Olympic gold medal games, we know it will be a challenge to repeat as world champions. In the history of the FIBA World Championships/World Cup, only Brazil (1959 and 1963) and Yugoslavia (1998 and 2002) have won back-to-back titles, so repeating will not be easy and is a challenge we look forward to.”

Gordon Hayward being on this list ahead of John Wall is ridiculous.

  • Al

    It’s too many guards anyway…

  • Paul

    Kyle Korver??

  • Saleem Rainman

No Demar DeRozan this time? that sucks…

  • Jerome

They seem to get weaker every international competition … maybe the rest of the world is just getting that much better? Anthony Davis should be added.

  • Jerome

My bad I can’t read apparently.

  • ScrewT

John Wall and Chandler Parsons should be in over Korver and Klay Thompson in my opinion.

  • cheshire

Korver is a great fit IMO he can literally park at the 3pt line/ Kwahi is a great add because he actually listens and plays D. As for the too many guards… nobody really cares about the big men anyways they just need to play D against them Euro stretch bigs

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Nick Tha Quick

    No Mario Chalmers. CMon man!

  • buschfire

Really DeMar DeRozan should be on this team…

  • Rapist on BAIL

Blake griffin being on this list is laughable!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he’s got the stigma of needing shots to put forth effort on the other end, plus he’s not a knock down shooter from distance. Bradley Beal has essentially taken his place.

  • spit hot fiyah

yeah, he is only consensus top 4 at his position.

  • spit hot fiyah

klay could be an absolute killer in fiba play

  • d

    roy hibbert?

  • b

    how?

  • b

True, but i feel hes easily better than a couple of the guards up there. I guess they care more about shooting.

  • robb

I understand the complain about John Wall not being selected, but you already have CP3, Rose, Curry, Lillard, Kyrie, D Will and Russ Westbrook. The USA needs guys like Haywood and Korver, there are too many PG’s already IMO.

  • andreiiiuhasz

Where is Dwayne Wade?! He’s got far better stats than Hayward

  • Dfrance

Pick your 12, I’ll go first:

    Durant
    James
    Paul
    Love
    George
    Davis
    Aldridge
    Beal
    Howard
    Curry
    Harden
    Griffin

  • robb

    bad knees, he needs rest

  • brothasdontsurf

If you watched the past few International competitions, you would know how much of an emphasis everyone tries to put on 3 point shooting.

It’s seen as a viable, if not the only, equalizer for other countries to compete with Team USA. So our national team probably felt that they needed to have some gunners of their own.

  • b

    Cp3 Steph Russ
    George Harden Blake
    KD Melo
    LBJ Love
    Davis Howard

    very hard to do lol

  • davidR

i would replace harden with klay. harden plays no D, and i really doubt he’s going to get all those flop calls in international play.

klay is the better defender and shooter

  • robb

That was Lebron man, that’s the only explanation I can think of

  • brothasdontsurf

    I’ll give it a go…

    Starters
    PG: Chris Paul
    SG: Stephen Curry
    SF: Kevin Durant
    PF: Lebron James
    C: Dwight Howard

    Bench
    Blake Griffin
    Iggy
    Kevin Love
    Paul George
    Damian Lillard
    James Harden
    Carmelo Anthony
    Unibrow
    Derrick Rose (I hope!)
    Russell Westbrook

  • brothasdontsurf

He’s more of a system big man, and this system doesn’t fit him.

  • bizzle

where the hell is Rudy Gay at he should be added to this list

  • LakeShow

No. He shouldn’t. Not even close.

    Name one practical reason.

  • LakeShow

While Tyson and Dwight aren’t as good as Hibbert defensively, they are both better offensively, and more athletic.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i think Dwight is a better defender. Once you factor in the pick and roll and not Indiana’s system, he’s better. But Hibbert fits that system so well that with the responsibilities he’s given, that it renders him the best defender in the league.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    PG – Paul (Curry/Westbrook)
    SG – George (Harden/Thompson)
    SF – Durant
    PF – James (Love/Griffin)
    C – Davis (Aldridge)

  • Jeremy de Sa

    Derozan

  • roon

Guess demar wont make all-star either…

  • Evan Boland

Dwight not as good as Hibbert defensively?

  • LakeShow

    This lineup….

  • LakeShow

    Yep, precisely.

  • LakeShow

You can make an argument for both.

Hibbert has been the more impactful defender as of late though.

  • Anthony

USA Basketball is notorious for going small and fast. Lebron at the 4 was first instroduced at the Olympics, wasn’t it? Tyson Chandler as the only true 7-footer on our squad is tough. I bet by the time the games actually occur Roy work his way into contention.

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

Wall and Hibbert stand out as the biggest snubs. But i completely understand the reasons for both not being there. I thought a guy like Chandler Parsons, or Demar might get a nod over Hayward.

  • Dfrance

12 Man roster if I’m not mistaken. Gotta make a few cuts coach

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it’ll be 15 until they do final cuts after the pre-olympic stuff

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    yeah…it’s pretty much without weakness

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

tbh, Korver will serve as a practicing tool. They can simulate what some of the other teams do with their shooters using Korver/Beal/Thompson/Love/Curry.

  • The Real

I saw that state to and couldn’t believe it.

  • The Real

All these guys bring something and can play, I would like to watch them go at it for these spots.

  • BE.water

He and Durant and Curry were stars on the 2010 team. Rudy Gay is actually great in FIBA competition.

  • The Real

He is a shooter, I don’t think he will make it though, out of all the guys on list nearly all except DHoward, Chandler, faried, types can shoot the 3. The international 3pt line is in closer so you may see guys like Blake who don’t shoot NBA 3s well taking them to. The line is that much closer that it turns almost all players on the roster into shooters except the for mentioned guys.

  • The Real

To me u said that in reverse, their both definitely better than Hibbert on D. He is definitely better than Chandler on the offensive end. U could make a case Dwight is better but to me both can put up numbers but inconstantly at times, but Hibbert hits FT’s.. Both will more likely make it before Hibbert because as u said they are athletic and the U.S loves to use those guys to protect the rim and catch lobs and it is intentional ball Hibbert is not mobile enough.

  • LakeShow

Don’t disagree with any of this, but why should he be on the team over George, Durant, James, Iguadala, Thompson? etc…

  • sauldreyes

nice lineup, but there’s no way Melo is being excluded considering how good he is as a 4 in international play

  • CraigB

Wall, Thompson and maybe Parsons in time will get a shot at the team, Klay might make it this year, with the 3 point line being almost 2 feet closer, he gone light sh/t up.

  • LakeShow

“their both definitely better than Hibbert on D”

    Oh really?

Hibbert anchors and is the best defender on a team that allows fewer points than any team those fellas have played for.

I didn’t even have to look that up. I can guarantee it.

Hibbert is a more polished “looking” offensive player, but that doesn’t excuse that he can’t put up 50%FG’s while Tyson and Dwight have led the L several times in that category.

I don’t see how you could possibly prove your statement.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

it wasn’t a prediction the politics of it make predicting the actual team impossible, @DFrance21:disqus said “your 12″ so i obliged ;)

  • The Real

Scratch Rose now, he ain’t played in a while and definitely not coming to that camp competing with those guards he’s been out of practice. Klay got a good shot to replace iggy. They both play defense well but Klay is a much better shooter.

  • CraigB

Word. Roy so slow Chandler and Dwight can probably make it 1.5 times up and down the floor before he hits half court. He’s a traditional big man like u said he don’t fit the system.

  • CraigB

He can’t shoot though, guards that can’t shoot won’t make it.

  • CraigB

U my friend got to catch some Clipper games……he been ballin.

  • TTN

I can’t wait…nothing like basketball on TV the entire summer.

  • DJ_BobbyPeru

Bradley Beal is in and Wall isn’t? Weird. Hopefully he gets to be a replacement when either Westbrook or Rose can’t go due to injuries.

  • VanCityBBall

I want to agree but playing over seas the 3 is the biggest weapon.. thats why there are so many pg’s so they have diversity of people who can handle the ball but can still shoot… Team USA usually have strong enough guards to defend opposing 2′s anyways

  • TJ

Dwight won Defensive player of the year 3 times man,Respect. As of this season, yes, Roy is a better D than those two but can he sprint like Dwight and Tyson? But i think they should replace Tyson for Hibbert… Tyson was a non factor vs spain.K Love fucked spain

  • Adrian Alzamalo

    no shock, but AWE

  • brothasdontsurf

Yeah I just found out about Rose and Melo probably not playing. But there is no way that Iggy is not on the team, I just spoke on it yesterday but he’s too good of a versatile glue guy to not be on the team.

  • brothasdontsurf

And plus, the team will only use 10 players most of the time in the rotation during the competitions, save for the blowouts.

Korver will be utilized mainly in training camp, but players like Klay Thompson, Beal, and Damian Lillard have higher upside and can also shoot the 3 off the dribble along with spotups.

  • BOSTON PRIDE

RONDO Is not in the 28 man squad whilst he led the NBA in assists last year and is an amazing defender

  • ibrar

DeRozan????? dude is a beast at least give him a chance

  • rhoniel dandan

    where is kobe bryant????

  • BE.water

Unfortunately, he does so many things at a really high level that he doesnt quite excel in one area as those guys do. Each of those players would fill a sperate role. Rudy is a good utility guy/ backup scorer

  • The Real

U like to argue….or u oblivious to the game. Dwight and Chandler together have 4XDOP’s between them, several all defensive 1st and 2nd team all defensive teams selections in between them. Howard has lead the league in rebounds 5x, 2x in blocks. Both have anchored D’s that have be far more successful (both took teams to the finals) than the pacers and Roy. Both have been on several Olympic teams just to anchor the D inside. U should have looked that stat up cause that was an idiotic guarantee. And many might say PG is the best DP on the pacers roster and I would concur.  U still don’t get where/way people (not just me) on this site are saying their better defensively? if u don’t stop calling your self a fan RIGHT NOW.

On offense I agree with u, with the eye test hibbert looks better than Dwight , dwights moves are not terrible he just looks stiff like he spends to much time in the weight room and not enough on time on the court.

I couldn’t possibly say hibbert was better on offense because Dwight has clearly better numbers throughout his career. To Hibberts defense he shoots way more shots (jump hooks, 10 footers etc.) than dwight and chandler that explains his FG% being lower, they get higher % baskets. he doesn’t get the dunks and lobs like Chandler and howard because as YOU and I stated their more athletic.

  • CraigB

Very true man, I thought he could have made this past summers squad instead of Iggy, both defend very well, I think Rudy score better tho…

  • Ther Real

Why not Melo I haven’t heard? last summer they said it was very close between him and Gay for a spot. That tells me they could go another way, like a younger player i guess this time around, even though he still the same old Iggy

  • d unit

    where is john wall?

  • jhay andrada

BradleyBeal is there but no JohnWall !? wew

  • ARISE CHICKEN

dwight would love to have teammates who like to defend, like all of indys starters. dwight has many defensive slackers on his team.

  • brothasdontsurf

    He took himself out actually

  • 4ryyr

    Last year….

  • LakeShow

Oh we are going totality of their careers?

Yeah Dwight and Chandler have DPOTY… So they are the historically better defenders.

But today is not history. It is present.

Hibbert is currently the most impactful defending anchor in the L.

    FACT.

  • playa

IMO there should be only like 2 vets in this squad/sqads – Melo & maybe Iggy(bron bron should call it quits at the top, he played like clear cut best player in the wolrd in london, there’s nothing to add).Go Young !!!!

  • playa

Yeah& he probably wouldn’t take a single 2 pointer, save for a open layup or dunk haha

  • playa

Holy shit, i might wanna try this in 2k14 on a down day….

  • The Real

Yeah why would u not base your argument off their careers? That’s what tells u who they are and what they are capable of. U say hibbert is better like the other two got old and lost a step and capability. Chandler been hurt most the season so that’s kinda not fair. If we use your logic then James harden is a better shooting guard then Kobe and Wade. I would love to hear u say he is jpknowing the Kobe fan u are. It wouldn’t make sense based on resumes and the fact that harden only been playing at a high level for one and a half seasons. Its Not a FACT it’s your opinion like a lot of this basketball who’s better stuff is opinionated.

  • BE.water

If One of those 3 In Durant George or Bron aren’t there, I would want Rudy To fill one of their spots. Just like he really went to work on college competition, he showed that same ability on the international stage. I think the negative press that he has gotten about him being counterproductive for his team hurt him for USA consideration. Since he has been to the Kings, he seems to be fitting into a role as a first/second/third option scorer and actually becoming the player we all think he should be becoming at this point. Been a Rudy Gay fan since his days at UConn.

  • vbull4

Rondo has made the personal decision not to compete internationally

  • vbull4

As a raptors fan I’ve seen Rudy live many times, and though he’s a good on ball defender, he doesn’t play team defence, and iggy also can play point forward because of his passing, whereas Rudy can’t pass
