Blake Griffin Will Never Enter Another Slam Dunk Contest

LA Clippers star Blake Griffin hasn’t taken part in any All-Star events aside from the big game on Sunday for three years, and he plans to keep it that way. (The Slam Dunk Contest is out of the question, and besides, BG does enough spectacular in-game dunking.) Per ESPN:

“I wouldn’t say it was a mistake [in 2011] because it was a great experience, but it’s something I would never do again,” said Griffin, who won the dunk contest that year.

“For me, All-Star Weekend is about getting a chance to rest as much as anything. With the All-Star Game alone you still have obligations almost all day Friday and you have some kind of an event Friday night and Saturday’s practice and appearances. Saturday night for me now has become the time where I hang out with my family and hang out with my friends and take it easy.”

So I guess when Jordan, and Wilkins did it they didn’t have the same busy schedules smh….the truth is that guys are scared to loose, period….Lebron won’t do it, because he’s scared to loose, they have too much at stake if they loose. I’m from Akron, was in a dunk contest against Lebron (that was fixed) and believe me I almost beat him with a broken foot, to make a long story short my missed dunks were counted his were do overs….any way the look on his face he had that he could loose to a street ball dude was classic…Bron is the man I can’t front, but he doesn’t dunk cause he’s afraid to get beat.

Now after saying all of that, the dunk contest should be for the young guys, dunking is overrated….they need to scrap the contest, and have a 1 on 1 tournament instead. Don’t get me wrong I would love to see a live dunk contest, but I doubt it will be this year, and if it isn’t the stars doing it who cares anyways…I’m sick of seeing 1 trick pony dunkers make a name for themselves, but can’t do anything else, but dunk…smh it’s called All Star Weekend…Bird was the best shooter, Jordan, Wilkins were the best dunkers and they were also some of the top players…I miss basketball in the 80′s & 90′s

If he doesn’t want to participate thats his decision and I’m cool with that, but the whole “this weekend is a time for me to rest” statement is pure garbage, especially for a relatively young guy like Blake. Like he said, he’s not getting any rest any way, being that he’s an All Star player. Whats an hour worth of dunks in the grand scheme of an 82 game season?

  • vINSANITY

Anyone know how tiring a dunk contest really is? I could only chime in for a below the rim layup contest

  • Slick Ric

This is why I respect what Lillard is doing, some may say its crazy but you have to take full advantage of these experiences man, its not promised tomorrow. You could end up like Rose, having to sit out for two seasons, why not compete while you have the opportunity. I don’t like the mentality of some of these new school guys.

  • Anthony

I like that Dame Lilly is going all out too, but I seriously doubt he’ll do it again.
Were talking about the mentality of new age players in the gym the other day. Its like these young fellas do it all for the money, or fame to create a “brand”. The guys in the early 90s and 80s seemed to just do what they did for the love of the game.

  • Anthony

I think its not really “rest” per se but just being “off the clock”, not having to abide by a given schedule. Just having a day or two to do what you want when you want. If you look at BG’s comments most of it was about appearances and other time obligations as opposed to the actual events.

no they didn’t have the same busy schedules in the 80s that they have now…..

“The Washed Chronicles” Pt. 1: Me against LeBron.

  • Slick Ric

Yeah, of course he shouldn’t do it every year. lol…I concur and I’m a young guy, SOME of these guys don’t seem to embrace the competition like the old school players used to, namely the superstars.

  • Dfrance

All Star weekend is only relax time for dudes that are not All Stars. He’s still gonna be on the NBAs/Jordan Brand/Insert Sponsor Here’s schedule. He doesn’t want to do the contest, thats cool, don’t make excuses as to why.

All I know is he better not be at any of the celebrity parties or on the sidelines at All Star Saturday, if he’s really about relaxing. lol

Unless you’re missing multiple attempts in a row a la Nate Robinson, it can’t be THAT tiring for an NBA athlete.

  • Dfrance

If people think dudes are scared that their rep will take a hit if they lose a dunk contest, why do you think they would sign up for a 1 on 1 tournament?

  • vINSANITY

Or Birdman. I need a snickers bar right now!

  • Anthony

Agreed…lack of accountability if you say you want to “rest” but you go out an behave in a way that is not restful.

  • SwissArmyKnife5

@disqus_rOeXXBD2qs:disqus you’re right bro, but I get sick of that excuse

  • SwissArmyKnife5

They probably wouldn’t, but anybody playiing 1 on 1 would be more interesting than the dunk contest.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

I agree with you but I’m sure the league doesn’t want them to be honest, saying “it isn’t worth it” is not a good look for the league lol so they gotta use any excuse they can

  • SwissArmyKnife5

Actually it was Myself, and like 4 other guys in the contest against Bron…thanks for being a fan!

  • SwissArmyKnife5

I feel you bro…I just want to see a guy who wants to win everything. Dam Lililard gets alot of respect from me for being in all the events.

  • spit hot fiyah

get dunked on by patrick chewing

  • Interdico Scriptor

You beat LeBron with a broken foot? over & over??
    Wicked!!!

  • Interdico Scriptor

Griffin (IMO) says this because he’s trying to establish himself as MORE than just a dunker.. which is understandable. I had the same prop in the NBL (NOT)
Clipps are the gas to watch, especially Blake (and DJ)
    Clipps for the chip!!!
