LeBron James Calls ‘The Decision’ the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Him

We’re unlikely to deal with anything like “The Decision” should LeBron James enter free agency this summer. And despite all of the grief it caused him four years ago, LeBron says the televised PR disaster was a blessing in disguise. Per GQ:

The Decision show was a flop. He gets that. But the decision itself was just a man having a growth spurt. “The best thing that ever happened to me,” he says. “I needed it. It helped me grow as a man. As a professional, as a father. At the time, as a boyfriend. It helped me grow. Being confined, I spent my whole life in Akron, Ohio. For twenty-five years. Even though I played professionally in Cleveland, I still lived in Akron. Everything was comfortable. I knew everything, everybody knew me—everything was comfortable. I needed to become uncomfortable.

“Now I’ve seen everything on and off the floor this league has to offer,” he says. “I got an answer for everything. Winning, losing, being a free agent, staying, leaving, media, media down on you, media big up on you, agents, money, parking it, family, money. All, everything. So whatever your question is, I can deliver.”

Former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel said in an interview that the thing he was most thankful for when getting crushed by the media was James texting him and giving him advice.

“Oh, seriously?” says James, flashing a grin. “He said that?”

What did he tell Manziel?

“My secret words.”

    “Parking it”?

  • JJ Jones

Well it definitely lit a fire under his ass to start incorporating the fundamentals of the game with his freakish athletic ability.

    Park them big cars

Lebron is an extraordinary human being. However the guy literally thinks so highly of himself, and lives inside his own head. It would be great if the best player in the NBA wasn’t such a full-of-crap windbag. Stop talking, and just play basketball.

We’re not stupid! You flop, and you have a high tendency to speak with your foot in your mouth. We can tell.

Even though the event itself was an actual disaster–and I’m sure he knows it was really stupid–the consequences of it probably helped him grow as a person and a player a lot. He learned to start taking criticism, understood that he wouldn’t always be liked, and was able to manage his public-image better thanks to it.

Anyone know when The Decision comes out on Blu-Ray? I’m still waiting…

quick, complain about a player saying something in an interview, he’s the one who looks ridiculous. not you

So you hate the man’s self-esteem? Lolol. One yourself.

I want the 6 disc special edition that shows the full behind the scenes dance party when James arrives in MIA, and the bonus “Bron confronts Delonte” disc.

I have no idea how a man worth nearly 300 million if not more before ‘the decision’ can ever put himself in a situation that is “uncomfortable”

These types of quotes are what normal every day people can relate to when they move away from what they know; but guys like Bron people with ‘power’ have no idea what your talking about.
