Boston Gameday Musings

When will Ray Allen show up?

by Tzvi Twersky

I am convinced that tonight’s game is a do-or-die game for the Celtics. If they go up 3-2, even if they lose Game 6 in Orlando, then at least Game 7 will be back in Boston. And, last year—and in the first round this year—they didn’t seem to flinch at that scenario, winning two Game 7’s in Boston. If they lose tonight, however, they would have to win back-to-back Playoff games, something that they’ve only done once this postseason, and struggled to do last year when one of them was a road game.

Here are some of the key factors that’ll be in play tonight:

– Brian Scalabrine was not feeling well this morning and missed the Celtics shootaround. If he can’t go tonight, the Celtics will be missing three big men—Kevin Garnett, Leon Powe are also out—and will be severely shorthanded at the 4 and 5 spots. This would be a story against any team, but against Dwight Howard—and with Kendrick Perkins also having a bum shoulder—the Celts better hope that Glen Davis and little-used Mikki Moore bring their best.

– The Celtics kept us in the closet towards the end of the year as to the severity of KG’s injury. I have a feeling that they still are. He is not playing tonight, and it’s not plausible to expect him to play in Game 6. But, if there is a Game 7, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in uniform on the bench—even if just for the energy it would bring to the arena. It’s tough to tell, though. Doc is doing his best impersonation of Bill Belichick.

– Ray Allen has been M.I.A this series, shooting an abysmal 0-10 from 23″9′ in the last two games alone. He is averaging 12.8 ppg for the series. The Celts need him to find a rhythm tonight. Doc knows this, so look for him to try to get him involved early.

– Eddie House was lights out for a minute there, but in Game 4 the Magic had him bottled up, reminding everyoKendrick Perkinsne why he is a reserve. If he can provide 12-18 minutes of rest tonight for Rondo and Allen, and bucket two or three long-bombs, Doc will be happy enough.

– Back to the bigs for a second, Kendrick Perkins has a chronically bad shoulder. We all know that. But it seems that when Brad Miller took a judo-chop at it in Game 7 of the first-round series, it must have aggravated it. Since then, Perkins has gritted his teeth and played on, but he has been tugging at it, and even needed to sit after hurting it again in Game 4.

– Sam Jones made a rare appearance at a Celtic game, as Game 4 was only his second time watching his old team since he retired. Tonight in Boston, though, look for a handful of former Celts to be on hand, cheering for the current group. In my mind, the Celts of old are more loyal to their old team than most other franchises. And I think it plays a role, albeit small, in their homecourt advantage.

– The Celtics hit only one Three last game. They will not win tonight if that happens again. Ray, Eddie and Paul need to make it rain from downtown.

– Glen Davis is catching a lot of flak for nearly maiming 12-year-old Nicholas Provetti. I don’t like it. It’s hazardous sitting in those court-side seats. It’s also amazing to be so close to the action.  That’s the trade-off. As a life-long nosebleed sitter, trust me, I would trade places with that kid any day. Besides, Baby did his best to get out of the way. Imagine if actually hit him head on? We’d be talking to the kid live from the hospital today.

Bottom Line: Look for the Magic to play aggressive tonight, upset at what they perceived as too much celebrating from the Celtics last game. The Celts just have to weather the initial storm and keep the game close heading into the 4th quarter. Because, as they’ve proven over and over again, if it comes down to one possession, they will win.

    Magic in six

  • AlbertBarr

Celtics don’t have much left in the tank…of course it would be fun fun to watch LeBron destroy them. Which will happen if they advance.

  • AlbertBarr

Ray Allen…on the decline for real? I’m starting to think so.

  • Dwayne Charleston

T in the key, dropping the truth on us in two’s and three’s.

  • daniel

Man, if I were Nicholas Provetti I’d be the happiest kid on the planet – and Big Baby would be my new favorite player. And maybe I’d go on a diet. Just saying.

  • Diesel

First off – I hate the cetlics and their antics. Second – the second I saw Davis push that kid I knew either the kid or his father would try to A. get some money out of it or B. get some face time out of it. Someone should have powdered up the hand and slapped the dad for demanding an apology. I’d have slapped the kid to for having a weiner as a father.

  • Diesel

@ daniel – good stuff. Big baby was just preparing the chubby kid for what he’ll be experiencing once he enters high school

  • Kulchakris

I always disliked the Celtics growing up, largly because of their many battles with the Lake show. That said, I find this current iteration (Ray Allen and Doc Rivers aside) to be absolutely unlikable. The always scowling Perkins; Stephon “I’m afraid to shoot” Marbury; and of course, the King douche-bag Kevin Garnett, whose behavior is even worse now that he’s on the bench. Nothing would please me more than to see them humbled in this series, if not the next.

  • Darrion Burroughs

T is rite. if J. Shuttlesworth doesnt hit some threes, Dwights gonna be too much for the C’s.

  • Opie

If KG was playing this series would have been over in 4. Great analysis Tzvi.

  • michelle

good piece – no way the celtics win tonight.

  • TP

Love the Work Tzvi, Celts have been playin some inspired ball, I see Rondo in a big way tonight…Where’s the love for Bill Walker??

I think its ridiculous that people are getting on Davis for sweeping that kid out of the way. Like you said, those are the perks of being 6 inches away from the action buddy, get over it. 14 year old ball boys are ALWAYS spoiled little brats anyway. Baby is a good guy, and a kid at heart, I gurantee he meant no ill will, he was just crazy excited and running to celebrate with his teammates.

  • Harlem_World

AlbertBarr, you did watch the Bulls series, right?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Like I said, a kid at heart. How can you not root for this guy?
“No, I didn’t see the kid. Like I say, I’m a big guy and I’m emotional and I didn’t see him. If I’d have seen I’d knocked him down, I’d have picked him and rubbed his head and try to make him feel better. Because I’m a big guy and I’m sorry if I hurt anyone at all.”

    Give it a rest Orlando.

  • Tommy Patron

That kid’s father proved, once again, that only celebrities and dbags sit courtside. Maybe that kid should have been closer to his seat. Where was the father to look out for the kid?

  • kirsch

theres no difference in this years C’s and last…accept KG. Theyv held up pretty well considering the loss of their star player. lets see where the Lakers or Cavs would be without theirs. (the rockets have done pretty well in one game) celtics in 7 at home in OT…then Lebron steamrolls them in 5 next round…thanks for the input Tzvi

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

I’m with you on Glen Davis. If I was that kid I’d be freaking ecstatic! You’re part of sports history now you little punk, be happy about it. I’m not a C’s fan, but as a louisiana native and a “root for the underdog” kind of guy it was great to see Big Baby nail that shot and go crazy.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

except KG kirsch? And Leon Powe and James Posey and P.J Brown… I’d say there’s a lot different about this year’s Celtics.

  • mike

AlbertBarr – Did you by any chance see Ray Ray in the Chicago series? Decline not for real buddy

  • AlbertBarr

Harlem…Yes I did see the BUlls series…Ray Ray has had some good games, great games in fact, but some games he struggles, many games in fact…to the point where you cant really count on him to produce points unless its in the clutch…I didn’t say he wasn’t any good any more…I just think he is losing a step or two…or three…0-10 from the three line over the last two games alone, bleh!…what about his performance in last years playoffs where he didn’t really contribute till the finals…he got a pretty J and can still sink the game winner but if he is on the the court and I am the magic, I’m not really that worried…then again Ray might go off for 40 tonight so…

  • tenorca

When missing Scal is a big deal, that’s one hurting crew. I’m no Celtic fan, but, like Houston in game 4 and Dallas last night, I love to see these guys battle through games they’re supposed to lose and pull it out. LeBron, meanwhile, is in his robe and underwears, waiting to fustigate one of these teams.

  • AlbertBarr

Wasn’t he being guarded by Ben Gordon in the Bulls series? Might be why his offense woke up at times.

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

The thing about jumpshooters… and that’s essentially all Ray is at this point, is that they are by nature inconsistent, whether it’s Ray Allen or Reggie Miller or Peja Stojakovich… sometimes the J runs cold and there’s nothing you can do it about it but keep shooting and hope it starts going in.

  • AlbertBarr

Peja isn’t even a jump shooter anymore…he is just a beard with back spasms and a smoking addiction.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The thing about big baby is that if he didnt try and dodge the ref, hence running into the fan, he would have probably got a fine (for hitting a ref)… and what was the court side fan thinking, standing on the court like that?

  • mike

AlbertBarr – can’t wait to see ray go off tonight on your team

  • tenorca

If you give me front row seats to a playoff game decided in the last second, I’ll let Big Baby cannonball onto my spine.

  • AlbertBarr

If Ray Allen were playing my team that would be possible mike..except he is playing the Magic…so its not.

  • Brandon33

In order for the Magic to have any success this year or any year, they have to get the ball to Dwight Howard. Too many jumpers…..

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Ray Allen will never show up in the playoffs. The Magic are going to win the next 2 games and send boston home.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

@ Jacob J: Im guessing u didnt watch the Finals last year or the first round this year

  • that dude

Dwight Howard still can’t score unless it’s a dunk. He’s only got two moves which he recite, regardless of the positioning of the defender. the face up spin move to the right or the running left handed hook. Sadly, neither of these work. ever.

  • that dude

and by recite i mean recites

  • AlbertBarr

Ray Allen is really going off tonight…

  • AlbertBarr

    I mean Stephon Marbury

  • AlbertBarr

Ray Ray made a great pass just now though

  • AlbertBarr

    and a big three

  • Michael

Dwight Howard can no longer be considered the best center in the league. He just can carry a team offensively. This is a joke.

  • http://galatasaray.org madamerica

SVG ıs a terrible coach. And Doc Rivers is the coach of the playoffs so far. And Dwight Howard is the softest superstar in the league.

  • http://galatasaray.org madamerica

And Rashard Lewis is a choker, he’s not half the player Hedo is.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Could you imagine how tense things are at SVG’s house?
Daughter: “Hey daddy, how was the game?”
SVG: “HOW THE FU(K DO YOU THINK THE GAME WAS? I HAD THE PERFECT SYSTEM – A BIG GUY IN THE MIDDLE TO DUNK AND A BUNCH OF 3 POINT SHOOTERS -WHAT COULD GO WRONG?!!! DIDN’T YOU WATCH ESPN? OR WERE YOU TOO BUSY FU(KING THAT DERRICK KID? HUH?! DON’T LET YOUR WHORE MOUTH TELL ME LIES!”

  • Ron Page

Big Baby did the kid a favor. He was barreling down on him and used his hand to nudge him out of the way. If he hadn’t he’d have plastered the kid all over the parquet floor. And the dad that called him a ‘raging animal’ was himself a fat-assed, pasty-faced whiner.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!!

Damn, did I just see James White in for the rockets?!?!?!

  • D12FSU

First of all…im a big Magic fan..but i have to applaud something Doc Rivers did that i dont see anyone else do. He intentionally fouled with a 3 point lead. You just dont see coaches do that, when it really is the best strategy. But anyways, I still think the Magic can take it to 7 because theyve shown at times they they are in fact the better team

  • rabn21

    @D12FSU
Your not suggesting that all coaches should show a bit of common sense. Surely not. Blasphemy!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Orlando cannot hold a lead to save their lives. That will be there downfall. I’m not sure whether to blame SVG, the players, or both?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also, I think someone woke the Lakers up. Was TMac playing last night??

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

can somebody tell me what KG is doing everytime his team hits a huge basket? Is het pretending to type on a calculator while screaming at Orlando’s bench? He does it about 544 times a game. Anybody?

    Thanks

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I didn’t see it Gerard. I’ve tuned out Garnett about 3 weeks ago.
