Top 50: Ben Gordon, no. 47

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Eric Woodyard

The off-season of the National Basketball Association is like a game of chess! Organizations gain great delectation from competitively moving the right pieces to improve their chances of winning… or as Ving Rhames called it in the movie Baby Boy, deciphering the “guns” from the “bBen Gordonutter.”

Now what are the “guns?” The guns are the things that appreciate with value! What’s “butter?” All that other stuff that doesn’t mean anything after you buy it. That’s what it’s about!

Detroit Pistons Manager, Joe Dumars is no different, he goes through the same process. Dumars’ greatest challenge now is to reconstruct a winning franchise from the ground up.

Last season, Dumars went after an AK-47 in Allen Iverson but in the end it turned out to be nothing but regular Blue Bonnet, melting as the season progressed. This season, he hopes Ben Gordon can be that selective rifle. Pulling the trigger and lighting up the opposition with pinpoint shots just as he did in the Chi Town.

Why wouldn’t he be? The 6-3, Akon look-alike brings with him a new commitment to winning that was missing last year. Starting with intense off-season workouts in which he strives for basketball excellence, building camaraderie with teammates, and taking on a new role in his career, there shouldn’t be any doubt in anyone’s mind that Gordon will be top 50 status in the League!

Gordon’s workouts are legendary. They’re an integral piece to his success. They’ve been documented in just about every major basketball publication and airwave. He flouts the same off-season dedication as his Airness and the Black Mamba. He wants to be that good! This season should be no different… In fact, my girl Holly MacKenzie (…Canada stand up!!) just completed a story on his “Summer Vacation” in the latest edition of Hoop, where Gordon touched on this situation.

“I think everyday things are based around what I do on the court,” Gordon said. “So every day [I practice] shooting, ball handling—whatever I’m working on in my game, you know, at that phase or that period.”

“Everyone can shoot the basketball,” Gordon added. “I take pride in taking big shots with the game on the line, knowing my team can rely on me. I attribute that to how I train during the offseason.”

With that mentality of “taking big shots” and “knowing my team can rely on me,” he may be able to single-handedly bring life back into the Detroit Pistons. There will no longer be any worries about who wants that last shot because he’s already made it clear that he does. Prior to this off-season, the fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills had as much faith in the Pistons as the United States citizens did for President Bush during his last year in office—they just weren’t convinced.

This is the perfect spot for BG to become a “superstar” (…Matthew Santos voice) and establish a true fan base. Gordon’s finally in a situation where he doesn’t really have to co-exist with similar talents. This may propel him to having one of his best seasons of his career. I know what you’re thinking… What about Rip Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey? But, Rip can’t create a shot as well as Gordon and Stuckey can’t shoot as good as him so he will be given the opportunity to freelance all over the court. This was not the case in Chicago, where he had to play with the likes of Derrick Rose and Kirk Hinrich, hindering him from showing his full potential as a basketball player.

He’s also coming into this season with confidence. With a solid playoff performance under his belt against the Boston Celtics where he averaged 24.3 buckets per game, including a 42-point explosion in Game 6, why wouldn’t he be? This may be why he’s made an effort to begin building such great camaraderie with his new teammates in the Motor City…because he’s confident and comfortable.

• He’s joined forces with two former UConn Huskies, Rip Hamilton and Charlie V, to give him some familiarity. (Note: All three of them have been National Champions, just for the record)

• He attended Rip Hamilton’s wedding earlier this summer to show his support for the masked man.

• He signed a five-year deal, along with Villanueva, in an effort to show his commitment toward establishing a new core for the future of Pistons basketball.

All of these factors will play into the success of Gordon’s first season in the red, white and blue. The lucky No. 7 has accepted his role of coming off the bench, which was the problem in the D with Allen Iverson. BG’s also accepted a new role of handling the ball more this season, taking the pressure off Rodney Stuckey in pressure situations.

In his mind, this has never been an issue.

“That was one of the main reasons,” Gordon told Dime earlier this month. “In Chicago, scoring was what I was asked to do. But I can do a lot more—I can make treys, I can pass, I can create. There’s a lot to my game that people haven’t seen, or seen enough of. I think in Detroit I’ll be able to do more than just score.”

Don’t expect him to become Chauncey Billups, but hey you never know…

It seems as if playing in front of the Michigan fans has been his destiny. Since his rookie season, he has constantly drawn comparisons to Pistons legend, Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson and now he will be awarded the opportunity to excite fans in the same fashion. At 26 years old and reaching his prime, don’t expect him to disappoint.

whys everyone sleeping on the raptors they’re top 8 in the east FORSURE

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Their styles don’t mesh well imo. Though I’m not one of the ones who said they would clash.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

TAD: because he got P-A-I-D. BG is not like Manu, there’s a lot of emphasis put on being a starter over here whereas most Euros do not care as much. He got the big contract, he’ll want to hear his name during the intros. / Allen: Cleveland third, word? Orland and Boston improved that much or you don’t like the moves Ferry pulled off? I thought that Ferry went 2 for 3 in the off season. There’s now a low post scoring option and size on the wings. He missed out on a stretch 4 but, apparently, LBJ is going to spend a lot of time at that spot which would solve the well known and documented match up problems at that spot.

Raps will not be top 8. Only if they click, Bosh stays healthy, Jack can actually step up every night, or every second night. And Calderon has to stay healthy!! They have made imporvements but it will take them a while to the different kind of play they all have. And Bargani is still going to be a dissapointment again this year.

  • Exile

Allenp: Where do you see the Raptors falling? They made a lot of moves this off-season…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

After the top 3 teams everyone has questions marks. Can Louis Williams play the point? Can the Hawks run some sort of offense except isos? Can Beas play the 3? Can JO’s body hold up? Can the Raps not get slaughtered on the boards? Can Luol Deng bounce back? Can the Pacers stop ANYONE? Can the Bobcats find the basket?… and even the top 3. I mean we don’t know how the style change will affect Orlando. We don’t know if Shaq has a healthy season in him. We don’t know if Sheed is really back from the dead.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Raps have a MASSIVE hole at the 2-guard spot. Jack is a tweener, Graham has no ball skills, DeRozan is raw as eff, Bellinelli… I don’t know much about Bellinelli tbh.

  • Kas

This piece is not very well written.

  • http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://slamonline.com/online/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/kobe_bryant_top_50.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.slamonline.com/online/category/nba/slamonline-top-50/& James the Balla

Co sign Z. Just because the Raps made changes, doesn’t mean they will work … this season. Give Derozan a season under his belt. Bosh can hopefully play more the 2/5′s of the season as an all star. Jack, plays okay once every couple of nights. Belli will either really help the team out, or be non effective. They should have signed Pop’s, and they let parker go, so who is your startng two? Like Z said joey has zero balls, and zero jumpshot to go with it.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    totally doesn’t look like akon.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-hoops4life Overtime

Toronto don’t make the playoffs imo. As said above, no real two guard and just don’t see them meshing. And I don’t think Rip and BG will clash, as it was stated in the article Gordon is already trying to get on with Rip…but that doesn’t mean they’ll work together on the court…particurly with Stuckey, who I’m not that big on

  • jdn41

so Toronto doesnt make top 8 because we have a whole in the 2 spot(even though we did draft the best two guard in the draft but w.e) but a team without their starting point guard like philly makes the 6th spot… when did the two position became more vital to a teams success than the 1 position

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    TAD
Don’t take that list too seriously, although I think the Wizards might slip into the hunt now that I think about it.
The Pacers were close last year, although losing Daniels hurts. The Sixers lost Andre Miller, so that’s a good point. But, I think with Brand coming back they still have a better core than Detroit.
Detroit’s frontcourt is horrible, and they are going to have a battle for minutes in the backcourt. I don’t like that team one bit, but I am incredibly biased.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Z
On paper, Boston and Orlando look like better teams to me, although, I think I would look at things again if Cleveland managed to get Stephen Jackson. I’ve been hyping that move the entire summer.
I really like what Orlando did on paper. You know I advocated for them to let Hedo walk and get more traditional, so I have to back that up. Boston has the mindset, and if KG is right, they have the talent. Now, if KG still banged up, then I drop Boston to number 3, and move the other two teams up one slot.
I’m really high on Orlando on paper. That team is just exciting to think about.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Exile
The Raptors? I’m not sold on those cats at all. I don’t like Bosh as the main guy, and I don’t like Calderon’s durability. I think Andrea believes he’s better than he really is as a player, although he does have talent. I think Anthony Parker was a really good glue guy, and they are going to miss him working hard.
I don’t know about the Raps. They have talent, but I don’t think they believe in each other anymore.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t know how AI and Hamilton feel about each other off the court, but on the court they clashed. But, quiet as it was kept, the biggest problem was with Iverson and Stuckey.
Stuckey is not looking to take a backseat to anybody. And, when you have three guards who want minute and want the ball, you typically have problems.
    But, I’ve been wrong before.

  • jdn41

Whats wrong with bosh as the main guy were talking about making the playoffs not winning the championship IMO raptors are an exact copy of the orlando magic last season andrea is a taller rashard lewis bosh is dwight with more scoring less defence we have hedo calderon is better than jameer and they had c lee a rookie as the starting two which is derozan case

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-hoops4life Overtime

Andrea is nothing like Rashard. Bosh does have a MUCH better arsenal than Dwight but also has MUCH less defense and doesn’t rebound as well. Hedo could be big if he is used properly. Calderon is no way better than Jameer. And Derozan is raw, very raw, whereas Lee played his role perfectly

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-hoops4life Overtime

And again I must agree with Allenp, I’m not a fan of Stuckey…to me he’s the wrench in the machine

  • http://www.sonicbids.com/shaemorin doyouwantmore

Ben Gordon doesn’t look anything like Akon.

  • http://bighish3@yahoo.com the big H

Iverson is better then everone on this list so far

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Meh…it’s whatever. I don’t like BG personally, but I have to root for him since he is now on the team I root for. I never wanted to sign him, but I understand what Dumars was doing. Joe wasn’t willing to wait until 2010 when no of those players were guaranteed to leave their current teams. I’ll wait and see how it plays out. Even if Detroit is not a contender next season, Joe was banking on being back on top for an extended period.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    1.Boston
    2.Orlando
    3.Cleveland
    4.Raptors
    5.Heat
    6.Wizards
    7.Pistons
    8.Bobcats (if they get Iverson)

  • tavoris

TADOne…gotta tell u from personal experience, Rip and AI are NOT friends

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Maybe I should have included the Raptors in my list, but something was off about them last year. They just lacked heart or something.

  • tavoris

Allenp, it’s kinda the same problem the Pistons have…3 shooting guards and no point…the Raptors play with 3 perimeter shooting forwards and no center. Belnelli will probably do fine at the 2 (he put up decent numbers in limited minutes in GSW), and Nesterovic will help Bosh tremendously by just BEING there.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Does any of this effect the Lakers winning again this upcoming season?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    @Zee: LOL nope were Repeating!!.

  • tavoris

Pardeep & Zee, if “The Machine” has anything to say about it, the Lakers will repeat…However, my money is on San Antonio.

  • Exile

Allenp: The Raps DID lack heart. Thats probably why they dumped all their contracts. AP, Joey, Pops, Roko, Moon, Kapono etc… all gone. I think they only have 3 left from the beginning of last year. I just don’t know if they are any better.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    joey’s gone?

  • Exile

Yeah. Triano was interviewed and the Raps didn’t extend him.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

BG is a beast, but the Pistons are not going to make the playoffs without a center. And dont tell me that rotting corpse you call Ben Wallace is who their center is, we all know the last time Ben was a valuble contributor to a NBA team was when Larry Brown was in Detroit. A bunch of power forwards (which the Pistons have) will not be able to do battle with actual centers either.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

@BET it was already mentioned that Big Ben came back to Detroit not to play, but more to be a mentor. plus dude is retiring. so nothing special outta him, retire his number? we’ll see.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Klav who is he going to mentor. I understand the whole idea of using him to teach a bunch of power forwards how to be undersized centers, but that is like using a wolf to teach a bunch of domesticated dogs how to be wolves too. It just doesnt work like that. Plus Wilcox and Charlie V are not good defender at all, and Maxiell is almost too short to be a power forward much less a center. Until Detroit gets a legit C, i dont see how they can make the playoffs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Didn’t the Bobcats just get a legit center, like, a month ago? Honestly, other than Shaq, Dwight, and Kendrick Perkins, what center in the East is scary? However, I do agree the Pistons need a legit post-presence.

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

BET, well i’m not saying its going to work, and im not saying its the best idea…thats just what reports were saying. i completely agree with you, i guess it was just a good way for Big Ben to go out. i dont think retiring in PHX woulda been fitting. but as far as him mentoring, he’s got a lot of work to do and i don’t think it’ll help very much. but whatever, just my 2 cents.

  • Ty

Sad time to be a Piston fan. enormous waste of money this summer, Joe D. This time next year,we’ll REALLY be bummed.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Tad, why bring the Bobcats into this? I thought this was about the Pistons. Any center doesnt need to be ‘scary’ to dominate a front line that does not have anyone with the ability to defend them.

  • The D Train

said it before and will say it again: Ben did not have that great a playoff series against Boston. Was the leading scorer in the losses, was not the leading scorer in the games his team actually won. Go back and watch those games and tell me him chucking up everything within eyesight wasn’t detrimental to Rose, Heinrich and Salmons production. He’s a one dimensional, under-sized 2. The Microwave comparison is as good as any, although Vinny was a much better ball handler and quite a bit more sturdy than Ben. As a Bulls fan, I’m not sad to see him go.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Klav i also agree that this is a good place for Ben to retire. We can basically agree on everything…

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

well this doesnt count for anything, since rosters didn’t update on 2K9, BG saved my ass in OT and finished the game with 44! LOL 8-16 from trey

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I had nothing else, BET. I have to use whatever is at my disposal. Ty: Not really a sad time to be a Pistons fan. Detroit had a good run and now have just reloaded. The only question is whether they purchased the right ammunition. I guess we shall see.

  • skywalker

gordon is kinda like iverson, their both short and can score, but neither of them really make your team any better

  • skywalker

gordon is kinda like iverson, their both short and can score, but neither of them really make your team any better

  • http://www.infamousklav.blogspot.com Klav

BG needs to grow 3 inches so he can be called a “shooting guard” for real tho. i would still rather have him than the machine, but i guess he would b!tch about playing time since he would be behind Kobe anyway. a la Shannon Brown!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@Tavoris: I wont be surprised if the Spurs exit in the 2nd or 1st round. I know they got Jefferson but the impact they are saying he is goingg to make is overrated.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

they’re kinda alike except that iverson is about a million times better at that scoring business.

  • tavoris

Pardeep…look at the Spurs roster…they quietly STACKED themselves with athletes, help for duncan, and mid-range and long-range shooters. Plus, Duncan is still an elite player, and Parker is JUST entering his prime. Not even gonna mention Jefferson (which is actually an UNDERRATED addition-he’s a proven scorer, athlete, and defender who gets no recognition) Don’t count them out just yet.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    Shaq is next. Number 46!!
