Top 50: Josh Smith, no. 40

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by DeMarco Williams

Like everyone else, we cherish our homegrown talent in the A. We want them for ourselves, sure. But even more so, we want them to shine whenever they’re thrust onto the national stage.

Dwight Howard. Jamal Lewis. T.I. That’s all us right there. AndJosh Smith though the last two have had questionable runs of it lately, when they were at the tops of their game, hardly anybody in their respective fields could touch’em.

Joshua Smith was born in A-town and attended McEachern High before abandoning us for Oak Hill Academy his senior year. By then we’d seen plenty of the guy. Besides, he and Dwight would still represent for the hometown over the summer as members of the AAU behemoth, the Atlanta Celtics.

Newspapers spoke of Smith highly. Guess that’s pretty easy, seeing as how the dude could leap tall forwards in a single bound. And folks who actually saw him play were even more enamored. The kid had gifts Noah Webster couldn’t put words to. Speed. Strength. Springs. Some would call him a freak. The Incredible Hulk would have probably been more fitting.

We wanted the world to see it all too. But something held back our excitement. Smith’s skills were a bit, err, unrefined. He had potential through the roof, but getting it all to come together in a 21st Scottie Pippen package was something else. Josh was that book report you had in 8th grade. You knew you killed it with the syntax and structure, but when moms asked you to read it aloud, you paused.

When the Atlanta Hawks chose to draft the all-galaxy talent back in ‘04, the capital of the South froze in similar fashion. First off, was the city ready to share Josh Smith with the world? Second, how would everyone else react to the young man’s unorthodox shot selection and gazelle-like way on the hardwood?

Thankfully, the Hawks weren’t really good enough for the world to see. The first three seasons of Smith’s career, Atlanta was in doldrums. A win here, a four-game losing streak there. The squad, which earned 69 victories over those seasons, was the farthest thing from ESPN and TNT programmers’ minds.

But then a funny thing happened: the Hawks got decent. And I don’t care how much you detest a franchise, if it gives Boston all it can handle or dismantles Miami in the playoffs, you gotta show it some love.

Alas, the national cameras were finally on No. 5. (Sure, he got some attention over a couple of spectacular slam dunk contents, but the postseason brings a different caliber of lens.) With Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley’s full attention, how would J-Smooth react? Was he going to force 15-footers like he was prone to do? Would he drive uncontrollably to the hole and lose the ball? Or would he patiently work his defender, shake one way and send the poor chap the other?

In the span of 10 minutes, he wound up doing all three.

Chris Webber can’t understand that. We do.

Last season, Smith averaged nearly 16 points, seven rebounds and one and a half blocks. Solid numbers but clear downgrades from the 17 and eight the previous year. We can’t explain the drop-off. The Hawks front office had cut him a serious check. Teammates Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby were taking off some serious offensive load. It was just one of those things.

All we’re certain of is that when Smith is on his game, he’s one of the 10 most-exciting presences in the League. Period. No Hawk has dunked as thunderously since ‘Nique. No Hawk has sent gasps across the gym with one of his swats since, well, ever. The instant all of the intangibles should come together, it would be scarier than The Descent.

And to that end, Atlanta is super thankful for Al Horford, a re-signed Zaza Pachulia and Joe Smith. All of these bigs play a small role in Josh Smith’s upcoming season. Each time one of these cats takes a charge or an elbow to the back, that’s one less charge or elbow for Smith. Listen, the 23-year-old needs all his functions. (Yeah, 23. We know. Frightening.) But seriously, no man can do all that we need of Josh if he’s banged up.

The smarter shots, better free-throw average and longer fuse will come. Have to. The world may not believe it, but we in the 404 most certainly do. But after a ’09-10 campaign where the ever-evolving Josh Smith has his hands in every statistical cookie jar on the nightly, here’s hoping the masses will have room for a slice of humble pie. When Kenny and Ernie do come around, the city of Atlanta will be standing off to the side, nodding its collective head, saying, “We told ya the kid was special. Next year’s he’s going to be No. 25 on this list.”

I don’t understand this dude either I’ve watched him play in person a dozen times and his shot doesn’t look broke so why does it miss so often? He is the only guy in the league who compares to lebron athletically and he should take pride in that.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

although i love watching Josh play( i am an admitted dunking lover) i have to say that if he is top-40 then Usain Bolt is definitelly top-100.

  • rikson

Well – I dont really buy this guy. Great, GREAT Defender but his offense – or better – his J isnt developing the way I thought it would. Hes kind of behind in my schedule….

  • Czar Ruke

It’s always the same with Josh Smith. “Next year…”

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

IF he had a better shot selection I’d put him top 30, maybe even top 25.

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to 130 kg!!!)

@rikson….:expect from him to remain behind….at the same time i wouldn’t blame him for not trying to became a complete player if he is doing this for money (like…you know who). If he can demand max-contract money and get top-40 consideration by the press just by keeping his body in a good athletic condition then why bother spend everyday of your summer shooting J’s like Arenas or Drazen used to do….

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I’m tired of hearing about how much potential this guy possess. It’s time for him to put up or shut up this year. Fantasy wise, he is a basketball god but he needs to get his shot right like Bryan said. Dude is mad talented but I want to see more out of him this season. play wit it.

  • ctkennedy

josh does his job as a number 2 option way better than joe johnson does his job as a number one

  • http://Www.lkz.ch Darksaber

What DP said, and umm… Play with it.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

Actually, i take that back. Last year he went from 45% FG to 49%. That’s a big improvement AND a good % for his position. So, either you guys aren’t paying attention to his game or you’re just looking at the old Josh Smith.

  • rikson

Im not saying that he isnt trying to become a better player. Hes an pro athlete so thats the least you can expect! But we were told by the media over and over again about his potential, and since then we are waiting. I guess dude just cant live up to the hype…

  • jk_light

One of the best write-ups so far. I really enjoyed reading it.

  • http://myspace.com/showbread Bryan

I still believe in this guy to put up larry nance type numbers except with a few more assists.

  • anon

    > “No Hawk has sent gasps across the gym with one of his swats since, well, ever.”
You seem to be forgetting a certain person who goes by the name Dikembe Mutombo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Yeah, this is a good spot for him. If he ever gets a jump shot lookout, he’ll be a top 20 player.

  • http://slamonline.com/ DeMarco Williams

Hey, Anon. Didn’t forget about “Not in my house” Mutombo. Loved him. It’s just a difference. There’s theatre behind Smith’s blocks and the crowd eats it up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

    ATL, shawty.

  • a_whiteman

i would like to see atl get a real center so he could play more of the 3, which is his natural position if im not mistaken???

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’d just like him to play like a real 4 and leave that perimeter stuff alone. He puts up a spectacular 17 and 8 but it’s still a 17 and 8. He’s going on his 6th year in the L, what you see is what you get.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

His numbers have been the same for the last 3 years. What I don’t understand is what happened with the block shots?!

  • davidR

    he’s only 23..

  • tavoris

Z…Josh Smith is really a 3 playing out of position (just like Horford is a 4 playing out of position). If the Hawks could EVER get a starting-caliber center, then he’ll truly blossom as a player.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Then he’ll be only 25, then only 27, then we’ll realize that he was a 17-8 guy all along. Which is really good, don’t get me wrong.

  • tavoris

Z…he’s still young enough that it’s not a stretch to see a few 20-10 years. His main problem isn’t his shot (which, while flat, is still ok), it’s with his shot selection. If he didn’t have to masquerade as a 4, he’d have more instances where he’s shooting OVER the defender, as opposed to taking a heavily contested shot with a 6’11″ guy in his face.

  • http://slamonline.com cb 34

I’m a fan but i don’t think he’ll ever get that jumper down. Maybe because he’s so young but i can live with a josh smith giving 17 and 8 every night. He was asked before who jumps higher off one foot, him or lebron and he actually didn’t know who jumps higher. A true testament to how athletic he is. Amazing defender and was starting to show a bit of his passing game last year too.

  • Yesse

Isnt Josh Smith suppose to be like 37, not 40?

  • asdf

Kind of suprised that not a single pf or C has come yet. Truly must be a guards game.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

JOSH SMITH IS NOT A WING. I mean, have you guys seen him dribble the basketball?! This is what’s wrong with these young athletic dudes like him and Ty Thomas. They want to be wings but they don’t have the skillset or the footwork. Josh Smith should work on reliable post moves, a decent elbow jumper à la Udonis Haslem and run the break. I want to break the TV everytime I see him try to go for a pull up J off the bounce.

  • tavoris

Z…James worthy didn’t have a handle, either. Or a reliable jumper…but he ended up a pretty good wing for his career. Neither did Nique (who only got a halfway-decent J MUCH later in his career).

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    Hey everyone.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Good placement again. Where was Josh last year?

  • tavoris

asdf…the top half of the list will be pretty heavy with PF’s and C’s…Guys like Duncan, Dirk, Garnett, Howard will all probably be top-10.

  • UnRel

josh smith has skills.. but i agree with Z… what you see is what you get.. he’s not a 20-10 guy.. and probably never will be…

he’s a solid 2nd/3rd option… his career is like Odom’s.. crazy skills.. but can’t meet OUR expectations..

  • UnRel

james worthy didn’t have a handle.. but josh smith didn’t have a magic johnson..

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Josh Smith is the sh!t. No problem with this ranking.

  • tavoris

Unrel…Worthy was a pretty good wing anyway…had a pretty legendary college career. True Josh may never be a 20-10 guy…but he’s also not that far off.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I should clarify my statement: Josh Smith is a very good NBA player. But we shouln’t let his spectacular highlights trick us into believing that he could be a perennial all-star. He’s good but not great. This will be his 6th year and the last 3 have been nearly identical. Why would he suddenly improve? The comparison with Odom is spot on: Odom always looked so smooth out there that people were tricked to believe that he could be a #1 option and perennial all-star… so ppl called him a bust. Now that the expectations are more realistic (an incredible 3rd option on a stacked team) ppl are calling him an x-factor. It’s the same Lamar Odom.

  • jdn41

why are we comparing josh to a 20/10 guy like hes a 4 comparing him to brand, jefferson, duncan, bosh hes a 3 people if i had a 3 that gave me 17 points 7 boards 3 blocks 2 steals id be more than happy

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

It’s Josh’s fault that he’s this low; dude could be mid-20′s if he figures out how to contain his athleticism.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

over-rated… A lot of potential which he may never reach… JR Rider 2k10.

  • knock

I know someone saw the atl-cavs series where lebron tackles Josh from behind and gets credited for a block. At least he’s got that fire in em when he was arguin with the blind mice and received a tech. -If the refs called a foul everytime J.Smith drove to the basket, you know who he would be?? Lebron James.

  • http://slamonline.com John D

Way too high. Lang must’ve had a hand in this.

  • Dyce

Ok, Josh Smith is not better than Josh Howard…Numbers wise I mean you dont expect the leap from him next year to all of a sudden dominate. And Howard clearly is better than him dont understand how he’s even close to being better than him.

  • Dyce

He also could be a 20/10 guy if he hustled all game. He would have the motor to get 4 more point and a few more rebounds on tip backs alone. He is most of the time best athlete on the floor but doesnt hustle enough or play hard enough.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ tavoris: A half-decent jumpshot? ‘Nique’s jumper was WET, and he added a crazy bank shot to go along with it. Just because the man was a human highlight reel doesn’t mean he didn’t have a full arsenal of offensive moves.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Josh Smith is NOT better than Ron Artest, Allen Iverson, Baron Davis, or Kevin Martin.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Granted, all those guys should have been higher on this list anyways, so whatever.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

If Josh is a 3 then Marvin is a… Why is he the one guarding the KGs and the Bosh’s? / “If the refs called a foul everytime J.Smith drove to the basket, you know who he would be?? Lebron James.” Oh boy, where to begin…

  • vic21

there’s a lot more to being a good baller than jumping high and runnin fast….this dude ain’t got much more than that….
