Top 50: Shaquille O’Neal, no. 30

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Myles Brown / @mdotbrown

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not a singular act but a habit.”

The Big Aristotle quoted his namesake upon receiving his first MVP tropShaquille O'Nealhy in 2001 and eight years, three chips, three Finals MVP trophies and a dozen nicknames later, there are still no truer words when referring to Shaquille O’Neal. It’s merely a matter of what one believes he has repeatedly done.

From the moment he was drafted, there were never any doubts concerning his talent or his work ethic…..Well actually, there were questions about his talent. Off the court, that is. But his commitment never wavered and Shaq would be right back on set the following summer, determined to secure his spot at the box office and on the Billboard charts.

Despite the warranted criticism regarding his priorities, it remained clear that Shaq was simply too big of a personality to just play basketball. He was a rapping, acting, break dancing behemoth and we would’ve been cheated if he didn’t pursue other interests. We wanted him in Blue Chips, we needed him on Saturday Night Live.

But we also needed him to win a championship.

The question of how the games most unstoppable player was stopped so easily every spring was too maddening for nuance or circumstance. It demanded resolution, not excuses. So when Shaq turned his full attention towards basketball even his most ardent critics had no choice to acknowledge that when properly motivated, he was an indomitable force the league hadn’t seen since Chamberlain.

He won. Repeatedly. Threepeatedly, leaving his imprint on the record books, the lexicon and pop culture itself while proving Wilt wrong in the process. People did like Golitah.

But that was then and this is about now.

Or is it?

The Cleveland Cavaliers knew the stakes when they traded for Shaq this summer. Windows of opportunity are already small enough in this business and LeBron may not only shut it, but rip the foundation out if he leaves in 2010. They need to win and win now. Of course they’d want the Shaq that won alongside Kobe Bryant, but they’d settle for the Shaq that won with Dwyane Wade.

Eight years, three chips, three Finals MVP trophies and a dozen nicknames later, the question arises again. What will Shaq settle for?

This is the last year of his contract, but it remains to be seen whether he’s playing with any hopes of securing another one. Could this be the Diesel’s last lap? He doesn’t need the money, he’s been planning a life after basketball for quite sometime and he certainly wouldn’t have to sacrifice any of the limelight he’s enjoyed if he did choose to retire. The only things that can keep a player going at this age-besides a paycheck- are a sincere love of the game and a desire to compete. The challenge has been laid before him, but it remains to be seen whether he’s up for it.

Does Shaq have anything left to prove? Depends on who you ask. Does Shaq think he has anything left to prove? Probably not. It doesn’t seem so when he’s more preoccupied with crushing the competition in every sport except basketball. His place in history is safe, why should he care as much as we do anymore?

We wanted it all from Shaq because he had it all. The size, the skills and the Q rating. And now we want just one more thing. A rematch with the Celtics for another Game 7. A rematch with Orlando to show us who’s Superman. A showdown with the Lakers for one last shot at Kobe and a ring for the thumb. And LeBron. Well, I suppose that’s three things, but the more the better. Because what we really want is a properly motivated Shaquille O’Neal. It may be the last time we see him.

It’s about to get good now. top 30 for shaq? I like this pick for him because it’s not too low or not too high. Shaq can still put up 20 and 10 on any given night and with LBJ on his side, I don’t see his production going down that much. play wit it.

  • http://www.sportweek.fr LexaB

That one is gonna make people talk. A lot.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Nah, dude should be like 35-40 slots imo. Oh well.
I mean, he can still flat out play, but his “performance” on the court is going to drop because of the cast around him. Similar to PHX, except that this team has a go to scorer in ‘Bron.
PHX didn’t really. Hill and Richardson were good, but not instant buckets, same with Nash (Ama’r'e’ was injured for like 40 games).

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

30 is a good spot for Shaq. He’s not the Shaq of old but about every center in the L not named Dwight or Yao would DIE for 18-8 with a league leading fg% in just 30 mins. It’s clear to me that the only thing that is motivating Shaq right now is to create separation between him and TD/Kob with a 5th ring. Don’t let the nonchalance and the goofiness fool you, the big guy cares A LOT about his place in the history of the game.

  • Gerard Himself

I can only agree with Z. Nice post Z.

  • d-bo

    Very convincing article…

  • Michael

wow, Z obviously knows Shaq quite well

  • Niio

The last paragraph really got my hyped for the start of the season! Great write up!

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

Neon Boudreaux was a beast, and would say this ranking system is culturally biased. In all honesty, Shaq has never ceased to amaze well, anyone. From being in the midst of creating the most dominant team the 2000′s, and then suddenly stop caring, to the relationship with Co-Mvp, ass tasting, friend and enemy, Kobe Bryant. The Big Man, always shows why he is the most interesting member of the Twitter nation.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Still the 3rd best center in the league. I know he won’t hurt the Cavs, I’m just not convinced he’ll help them.

  • http://slamonline.com/ niQ

I’m not going to lie, the day he retires is going to be a sad day. I’ll miss him in the All-Star Games.

  • dial up

You may like his 17 and 8 but he sure didn’t do it winning any games. So take that as lightly as you can. They didn’t even make the playoffs in fact, shaq is done.

  • Michael

so is this a historical ranking or based on upcoming projections…the criteria seems to change to suit the ranking on any given day

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Good stuff, Myles. I think Shaq/Bron are winning it all.

  • TC

easily one of the top 3 centers on all time, and still one of the top 2 centers in the L now that Yao is out……

  • http://myspace.com/brandnew Bryan

    Wow dial up. Wow.

  • Atrain

I hope Shaq plays another 5 years dude is great for the league and is hilarious…

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

    Co sign Dial up!!
    Co sign Micheal!!

  • T Money

Thanks for that, Myles. I still live in the hope that one day you’ll free Max Arrington.

  • T Money

Oh, and Z done summed it up.

  • jalberto

What happened with no 29 : Manu Ginobili?
Are you going to post it later?

  • blackonblack

Manu time tommorow i take it then..

  • http://slamonline.com cb 34

Probably the best center to ever play and that includes wilt, kareem, russell and hakeem. He’s not done at all. Having bron will only free him up to operate one on one. Dwight or yao can’t even stop him on the block. Myles, i wish you included in your article that they changed the rules for him. They wouldn’t be playing that stupid zone defense if he wasn’t so dominant. Cavs are taking it home this year.

Shaq is still very good when he wants and the fact that there are no better U.S centers than him at this stage of his career further illustrates the scarsity of big men in the league . When Ewing, Hakeem,Robinson were starting to decline Shaq and ALonzo came in. Now those are almost left and we got …..super-guffy” ??? Anyway, I like Shaq as a player (i find his comments-ideas-actions a little bit silly but that doesn’t matter at all )

i wanted to have my final Euro report at the Manu page but….anyway here we go:
    • EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2009-THE END (starring Bill Russell,Pau Gasol, Oscar Robertson,Vassilis Spanoulis, Rudy and,… Allen Iverson ):(PART – 1) The championship ended yesterday and Spain was the rightful winner. I saw all the games the last 3 days and i will present you with the most important highlights of each day starting with the Friday.Friday was the last day of the quarterfinals when Slovenia managed to get past Croatia after the point guard of Croatia made a stupid mistake that got Slovenia back in the game. The other game was an epic one, one of those that make you feel lucky that you follow this sport. After a great battle Greece managed to pass through Turkey and Spanoulis, playing one of his better games with the national uniform outdueled Hedo in the battle of superstars. The game was close but at the end of the fourth quarter Hedo (that went scoreless in the first half) made two big 3pointers under pressure and gave turkey a lead of 6 points two minutes before the end. Then Spanoulis answered back with two huge plays (he had 6 3pointers,all under pressure and two of them from 9 metres) and the game went to overtime. Fotsis was once again huge and Greece prevailed to meet Spain in the semifinal.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2009-THE END (starring Bill Russell,Pau Gasol, Oscar Robertson,Vassilis Spanoulis, Rudy and,… Allen Iverson ):(PART – 2)Saturday featured the two semifinals with Serbia managing a surprise win over Slovenia in overtime with Milos Teodosic having a huge game (32 points with 6 3 pointers including the one that sent the game to overtime). On the other semifinal the two best teams in Europe in the last 5 years (and two of the top-4 in the world along with Argentina&USA) were meeting once again although this time Greece was without 4 of it’s top-8 players while Spain was missing only Calderon. But the Spain team that had struggled in the beggining of the tournament was starting to perform again near perfection and Pau Gasol was determined to capture the tittle that was hunting him in his whole career. So Greece was in a tough position from the bigging that became even worse when a few feet near our bench came to sit, guess who(!),Allen Iverson(oh yes!!!!),who got a standing ovation from the crowd. He then on said that he had a great offer from Olympiakos but family issues denied him th opportunity to play in Europe. He also said that he feels that he has lots of gas in the tank left and he will propably came to play in Europe in the near future (oh my god….).Anyway,at that moment i new that it was almost impossible to ge the win…Greece(that had played less than 24 hours in the overtime quarterfinal against Turkey) fought for the fisrt half but Spain had a plan of not letting Spanoulis beat them by himself. Ricky and Cabezas was pressing him all-over the court forcing him to commit many mistakes. Gasol dominated under the basket and Rudy was flying around for dunks. At the middle of the 3rd period Spanoulis sat on the bench along with the rest of our starting five and guys that hadn’t appear at the moment took some playing time (Koufos!!!). Truth is that even rested and with all our best players in Poland(Diamatidis,Papaloukas,Vasilopoulos etc) we were propably going to lose from Spain. Kalathes that took a lot of playing time since Spanoulis&Zisis went to the bench had the opportunity to test himself against Ricky and he really held his own…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Shaq @ # 30 in the NBA today? I can live with that. Shaq being one of the all-time greats and only having one regular-season MVP to show for it? That’s just criminal, if you ask me!

  • http://www2.gsb.columbia.edu/faculty/jstiglitz/ SOFOKLIS SCHORTSIANITIS(down to…. 150 kg!!!)

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2009-THE END (starring Bill Russell,Pau Gasol, Oscar Robertson,Vassilis Spanoulis, Rudy and,… Allen Iverson ):(PART – 3)Friday was the last day of the tournament. Greece palyed against Slovenia for the bronze medal and the game went once again to the limit. Spanoulis was exhausted but luckily for us Sofoklis “BIG SOFO” Schortsanitis had the gameof his life scoring 23 of our 57 points with 7/9 FG’s and getting also a free throw for most of his made FG’s since his opponents were hanging by his huge hands with no result (if you’ve seen SHAQ from 1997 to 2002 you get the picture). In the end our captain Antonis Fotsis broke the tie with a big 3pointer and Bostjan Nachbar’s attempt from midcourt was unsuccesful giving this young Greek team the bronze medal. in the final everybody was wondering which way Spain was going to lose once again a Eurofinal (they had never won in their history since yesterday). the spaniards got determined from the beggining and Pau Gasol was screaming after made basket like he was playing for his life (no wonder he insisted to play even after a broken finger). He and Navaro were making baskets from all over the place(even Ricky made his 3′s) and the game was over before it started(50-26 just before halftime). In the end Spain proved that is simply the best bball team in the world with only a much superior athletically U.S. team able to challenge them. Next year in Turkey will be really interesting. At the medal ceremony Spanoulis was presented by the great Bill Russell with a trophy for being chosen at the all-star team of the tournament (along with Teodosic,Lorbek,Gasol and Rudy) while a tearfull Gasol was presented the MVP by Oscar Robertson. Next year i hope i give you live reports from Turkey when all the world greats will be present. GO GREECE!!!!!

  • Syk

    i still can’t believe he’s only won 1 regular season mvp…it’s a shamockery…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I’d just like to remind everyone that Steve Nash has more MVPs than Shaq and Kobe and as many as TD. Yup.

  • kobesbestfriend

shaq should def be in the top 15!but like his whole career he isnt given the respect that he deserves!there is still no1 lone defender in the league that can guard him 1 on 1 and people still have 2 use hack-a-shaq 2 try and stop him!who that “SLAM” foolishly ranked above him can say that?when he gets his 5th ring this season i guess he’ll be ranked justly!!!he’s the best center in the league hands down!!!

  • http://jggamer14@aol.com jose

co sign Niio(10:38 AM) that sent chills up myback by how true that is. Shaq’s last chance? =’( If they win it all Then that’s the perfect ‘exit”stategy that he’s dreamed of.) It’ll be a sad day when he retires….

  • billy bob

Shaq has been the best player since mj laced them up after his sixth title in 98. But I believe he will have to get that 5th ring before duncan/kobe

  • rog123

Nash was/is a very good pg. Don’t know why people are shocked he has 2 mvps. If amare stayed healthy, he would also have 1 finals mvp

  • rog123

Nash is still a top 4 pg in the league today. Put him on any title contender and they would automatically become clear favorites. Bet any non pg in the nba would die to play with him for at least one season. He brings out the best in everyone

  • rog123

Shaq only has one reg season mvp but 3 finals mvps and 4 rings. Not so bad when u put it all together

  • tavoris

rog123, you are grossly minimizing how much Nash’s teammates have to play help defense after his man blows by him. Remember that STAT has been practically BEGGING to be traded (as did Marion). Nash is a fun player to play with and watch, but it’s a hollow enjoyment if you don’t win anything.

  • kobesbestfriend

steve nash was a flash in the pan thats all…unable 2 win with shaq proved that…kobe shoulda had those 2 mvps he won…the playoffs is what matters and nashty couldnt play a lick of d and thats y he couldnt ever beat the spurs when it counted!!!i’d take tony parker or billups over nash anyday!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

tavoris your right about the help defense thing…i can’t believe i agreed with you, but one thing your wrong about Stat has not asked for a trade in any way shape or form. He said he would actually like to resign, but only if the Suns are committed to winning

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

Weird, I just saw “nbk’s” info as my posting info. Anyway, it really IS a Monday…nbk and Tavoris agreed. WTH? And Kobe didn’t deserve those MVP’s those years, he didn’t pass much just yet. Wasn’t one of those years the year he dropped 81?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Everyone’s keep talking about how cats would be dying to play with Nash but I have yet to see someone that actually regets his time in the desert except maybe Q-Rich. Joe Johnson and Matrix couldn’t wait to get out, Shaq was not heartbroken to say the least, STAT has been lobbying for a trade all summer… Even Diaw and Bell didn’t seem distraught at all to jump ship. Just saying.

  • tavoris

Klav, that was a “qualified” agreement (you notice he pointed out I was wrong). He may not have pulled a Stephen Jackson, but believe the the Suns wouldn’t be entertaining offers if STAT wanted to be there.

  • http://iliveinphoenixidiots.com nbk

Stat has not said one time he would like to be traded. he said the chances of him being traded were prolly 50/50 but that it because Robert Sarver is/was having a firesale because HE is going broke. the only sun to ask to be traded in the last 10 years is shawn marion. and diaw and bell didn’t jump ship they got traded. And joe johnson left because the suns did not offer him a realistic contract not because he didn’t want to be there.

  • TADOne

    Good ish, Myles.

  • rog123

Besides joe johnson, who has played better after leavin phx and nash? Not qrich, not matrix, not diaw. Do u really think amare would be a 25 ppg game guy w/o nash. Maybe not the best defender, but no doubt his unselfishness and great shooting makes up for it. As far as playoffs, he has had to constantly deal with teamates injury

  • rog123

Not sayin better than shaq, but better than most people think.

  • http://iliveinphoenixidiots.com nbk

    amar’e isn’t a 25ppg player with nash.

  • Mike Klander

I’d like to see Shaq get one more ring before he retires. He still has a lot motivations with all his doubters and naysayers out there. It won’t take much of that for his competitive spirits to start flowing.

  • kobesbestfriend

yeah shaq saw 1st hand that steve nash is overrated like hell…it was more of dantoni’s playing style than nash’s pg abilities that led the suns 2 success…as u saw with that retard of a coach porter at the helm the suns went belly up even with the most dominant center of all time!!!as good as nash is he’s only effective in run and gun basketball!and kobe deserved those mvps more than nash…kobe almost single handedly beat the suns in the playoffs…if u woulda swapped kobe and nash the suns woulda won the ring both years nash won mvp insead nash led them 2 failure!!!it was dantoni that made nash who he was!!!!

  • JuicePig15

if shaq wants to win a title he should go to the hawks
