Top 50: Kevin Garnett, no. 12

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by DeMarco Williams

This may come a tad stalker-ish, but I can remember the day, almost to the minute, Kevin Garnett became my favorite player in the League. It was November 20, 2002. Philips Arena. Visitors lockKevin Garnetter room after a 103-93 Minnesota Timberwolves win over the Atlanta Hawks.

The scene was presumably like any other T-wolves postgame that year. Reporters pretended to have questions for the likes of Kendall Gill and Anthony Peeler, but in actuality, they were only killing time ‘til KG, who had a routine night of 15 and 12, finished in the showers.

Other writers asked their questions of Garnett while he lotioned up. I, on the other hand, waited patiently for my time. It would come after KG finished dressing. I recall asking about the game and the progress of the season –the ’02-03 campaign would be his seventh straight leading Minnesota to the Playoffs- but right as we were finishing, I slipped up in my interview. And one thing you don’t do next to KG is slip up…

Me: Kev, one more question for you. What do you do for fun in Minneapolis? When I was up there with my girlfriend… Well, she’s my ex now.. Anyways, we—

KG: …Hey, that sounds like a personal problem right there.

Damn, even when heading to the team charter bus, Kevin Maurice Garnett is on his toes. I dig that. The rest of the National Basketball Association detests it. Be it a quick one-liner in the locker room or the fourth quarter with 10 ticks left on the clock, the dude is always ready for whatever comes his way.

Throw a high school fight and accusations of gang activity at him as a teenager. It’s nothing. The South Carolina native merely packs his ish and moves to Chicago and becomes even more of a prep hoops legend.

Throw a young franchise like the Timberwolves that knows nothing of winning or playoff appearances before his feet. He laughs and not only guides them to the postseason on an annual basis, but also leads Minnesota to the ’03-04 Western Conference Finals.

Throw a proud Boston tradition, one with 16 championship banners but not a single new one since ’86, his way and you already know what happens. The most versatile big man the game’s ever seen simply ramps up his intensity a few notches past “Insane,” averages nearly 19 a night and helps the Celtics hoist their 17th title banner.

Throw Garnett into the ’09-10 preseason with Orlando and Cleveland looking like certified contenders in the East and, amazingly, it’s still nothing. All 6-11 (6-11 ½, 7-0 or whatever the measurements truly are) of the Boston power forward was built for this. He knows that he’s gotta face Shaq and Dwight eight times. He knows that his rehabbed knee is going to be tested early and often. He knows that it’s been five seasons since he played 82 games of injury-free ball.

But he also knows that the great ones don’t make excuses. They make history. And while the 33-year-old Kevin Garnett has seemingly done plenty already for his own wing in Springfield (12-time all-star, ’04 MVP, ’08 Defensive Player of the Year, only player ever to average 20/10/5 for six straight campaigns), he fully intends to write another chapter in the form of banner No. 18 hanging from TD Garden at the end of this season.

And from the looks of a healthy KG so far this preseason, he’s already back to his vociferous ways on the court. Of course, Garnett cynics will continue to say the animated antics and primal posturing need to be toned down some. But like underground rapper, and fellow Carolina native, Cesar Comanche once said wisely in verse, “Those who hate it hate it for the same reason those who love it love it.”

Consider me a proud, card-carrying member of the latter group since November 20, 2002.

And whilst I realize those two posts in succession are somewhat hypocritical, I thought I was leaving the Durant comment in the “Kevin Durant Cares Not For Your Stats” post.

    So youre an illiterate hypocrite?

  • http://wtfslamonline.com nbk

Illiterate, what does that even mean. (always sunnY)

    Illitecrate, thank you very much.

  • Shifty

Garnett should of been at least top 10 but i can dig this spot.

  • Shem

Well Dirk won MVP because he was the best player on the best team, then shouldnt kobe be first? (i think kobe is better then lebron but i think slam disagrees) Nash won MVP because he made all of the players around him better, then shouldnt Chris Paul be first? Personally, i would just like to know if Slam goes by how valuable a player is to a team or how much they think a player will produce next season.

  • http://wtfslamonline.com nbk

its how much the slam staff thinks a player will impact his team. not actually get the MVP award but contribute to their respective teams. Kevin Durant for instance, the Thunder will win prolly between 25-35 games. without durant they would prolly win between 15-20 games. He may not make them a playoff squad but he is imperative to whatever success they may have. (this is my opinion of how these ranking work)

Getting back on topic, all of the reports out of Boston indicate that KG hasn’t had any setbacks and is completely healthy. If this is the case, I don’t see why the C’s can’t return back to their 2007-2008 form which saw them finish 66-16. As I stated earlier, a slighted KG is a dominate KG. I also must point out the KG has the first legitimate backup behind him in Rasheed.

kg is the best player in the league period.hes the only player in the league who affects every play.on defense he guards the pick-roll better than any big man in the league.he can guard a power 4 straight up ala tim duncan or a jump shootin one ala rashard lewis.a one man press to burn 4-5seconds on the shot clock.offense he has top5 midrange jumper in the league.he has a back to the basket game with a top 5 fadaway.on pick and rolls he can do anythin with it pop, roll.or get the ball and be a playmaker himself hes a better passer than ray allen hes the sg btw can hit his free throws his only knock he aint a clutch scorer how many clutch scorers r big men in nba history

  • james

this is low for garnett i rate him above dwight for sure. dwight is no way top ten. you need atleast two post moves to break the top ten.
id also like to see melo in the top 5. no one shows love for melo, he got as far as, and played better than lebron this post season and everyone is still loving lebron for his first game winner of his career.
if lebrons #1 im going to kill myself.

I’m so tired of “you need post moves” or “you need a jumper” how many times have you played on the playground and had some dude who couldn’t stick a jumper domoniate the court and was obviously the best player out there? If you put up 20 points and 14 rebounds and 3 blocks you’re top ten in the league with one post move or a hundred. Get over it.

  • Vegas

As a Garnett fan, i know melo is lower than King G,but pretty good ranking,

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Anton stop forgetting Derrick Rose this is getting ridiculous now. Two times you’ve left him out.

  • Don

PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS, that greek dude is a professional basketball player? wow.

  • RIPKO

    i f@#**n love KG

  • RIPKO

n Dwight is NOWHERE better than him!!!!!!!!!!!

  • tavoris

nbk..if you think Larry Bird was even a passable NBA defender, then you need to watch Dominique, Bernard King, Chuck Person, and even Detlef Shrempf give him the business THROUGHOUT the 80′s. Nothing against Bird’s brilliance, but he couldn’t stop ANYBODY from scoring.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Myles, its not that people don’t want to see the criteria for MVP lists, but that the NBA never releases it.

  • tavoris

Don…that’s just his alter ego…he’s obviously a non-athlete that lives vicariously through the moderate success of his countrymen.

  • Lazarus

wooah i never thought id see the day he wasn’t ranked in the top 10 of the NBA

  • Shem

To the guy that thinks kevin garnett: Garnett averages 16 pts and 8 boards. He just had a season ending injury so he ll average less then that next year. Hes not even CLOSE to the best player in the league. I can name you 10 guys id rather have over KG.

  • knockonyerdoor

OK, KG is clearly superior to Dirk. Come on. Dirk just shoots jumpers all day. Garnett can play any position and plays on both ends of the floor.

  • TP

You guys at SLAM are always the best. But seriously!!??? KG not even in the top 10? I’ve been watching pro ball since ’92. And believe me…there are NOT eleven players in the NBA better than KG.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Tavoris way to prove how little you know about 80s NBA. Larry Bird was on 3 all defensive teams. And the 4 players you named, 3 of them were around 20 ppg scorers in the 80s. Detlef Schrempf though? way to put out a big huge i dont know jack isht about what im acting like i do. Detlef scored over 10 twice in the 80s against the Celtics. His 80′s decade high against the C’s – 20 points and Larry Bird didn’t even play. He scored 19 and had 10 against the celtics in one game. Larry Bird had 32 5 and 8 and the Celtics won. Oh and in the Game Schrempf had 20, the Pacers still lost. Tavoris once again i know what i’m talking about, you just think you do

  • karan

shem: averaging “just” 16 and 8, or lesser, doesn’t have that much to do with KG’s influence on a game, or a franchise. KG on the court vs. KG not on the court should be the question, and if anyone has really watched him play, you’d know that there aren’t 10 players you would want to take over KG in any game for any team.

  • Luciano Galasso

Good article. I like the ranking. Hopefully he can have a somewhat injury free season this year.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    NBK
So, you think making the all-defensive team means you’re a great defender?
Cause I disagree with that, and I think Bird was a poor individual defender. Tavoris is right that both Magic and Bird were poor individual defenders. They weren’t the worst at their positions, but, they weren’t much better than average, if they were average.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

NO i don’t think he was a great defender but he sure as he11 wasn’t comparable to Kevin Durant. My point was he was a solid enough defender to get the coaches of the league to vote him as the best or second best at his position. And what does individual defense really matter? its about team defense and a players effect of it. Durant is not good by himself or helping people. He is not good at defense period. Bird was a genius on defense, he maybe got burned individually every once in a while, but 9 out of 10 games bird would outscore his counterpart and the celtics would win. prolly 19 out of 20 actually

  • Justin

Based on 09-10 projections, this is a good spot for him. He’s clearly on the downside of his career and while’s he still great, I’m not sure if he’s the same player he was in 07-08. He’s going to put 16/8 with great defense and leadership and that’s all the Celtics need. I don’t know if that’s top 10 material though.

  • http://gmail Akash

KG is an awesome player.I mean this year so far in the Celtics being 3-0 he averaged 13ppg and 7rpg.He can do better though.I think the Celtics might make it to the Finals if he averages a double double and if Rondo sets him up well like in the 2007-2008 season when they won the Finals I think Kobe is better. He is averaging 26ppg and 7rpg.I still think he can pass more.Only 2.5 assists per game.I predict Kobe will win MVP and the King will be second with CP3 and D Wade close behind

  • jojo

    KG is a versatile player!!
