Top 50: Paul Pierce, no. 17

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Adam Fleischer

Growing up, whenever I was at a Celtics game at the TD Banknorth Garden or the Fleet Center or whatever it was corporately named at the given moment, I would rush down to SePaul Piercection 20 with about a minute left. I say down because this was, almost without fail, closer than where I was sitting. Whatever friends I was with and I would get to the section, situated perfectly above the tunnel leading to the locker rooms, and shout out the names of players as they walked byhoping for some level of returned acknowledgment.

On good days, I’d tell New Jersey Net Brian Scalabrine that I didn’t like him (maybe in different terms than that). On great days, I’d catch a towel or a Rodney Rodgers armband (hope the recovery is progressing, Rodney). The best days, and there were two of these, were reserved for Paul Pierce’s headband.

What I felt after ripping that small green cloth out of the air and away from those around me was pure thrill. I was thrilled that I was holding a sweat drenched game worn headband from an NBA player, from the star of my home team.

See, at that time, somewhere around the ’02-03 season if my memory serves, that’s exactly what Paul Pierce was: the star of the Boston Celtics. He was slowly moving away from being a star on the teamalong with Sure, I’ll Shoot This Three aka Antoine Walkerto being the star. Toine’s trade days before the next season solidified the role for Pierce.

With each year, he was putting new things in his game. Upping his free throw attempts. Expanding his range. Adding a now lethal stepback. Increasing his focus on D. Every year, Pierce seems to find a way to get better. Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes it’s subtle. In recent times, it’s been on the low.

Last week, Pierce launched “The Truth on Health Campaign” at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. His plan is to encourage kids to eat healthy and stay active. Like he does on the court, number 34 is leading by example off of it. He stated in an interview recently that his off-season was “real productive” and that he’s “coming back in great shape,” adding “I’ve changed my lifestyle to eat better, to be more healthy.” Granted, most dudes would probably say this when talking about their summers, but I bet you can count on him being in peak form when things tip in at month’s end.

He’ll be a year and a half older than he was when he was named Finals MVP. He’ll have logged almost 17,000 more minutes than when he averaged 26, 7 and 4 in that ’02-03 season. But he’ll still be that contact creating and absorbing, big shot hitting guy that he has been year after year. And when it comes down to it, there’s few dudes that you’d prefer on your team than someone who so evidently gives it all for the squad like Pierce.

Paul is probably the only player whose entire career I’ve been able to truly follow firsthand during my lifetime. He’s not now and never has been my favorite, but he’s the one guy whose game I’ve been able to watch on a nightly basis since his rookie year. In a time when free agency, trade demands, and constant retooling is the norm, Pierce remains one of the very few players who has stayed with the same team for the last ten plus years.

The total? Six. Yup, only six guys: Kobe, Tim Duncan, Dirk, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and the timeless Jeff Foster. And Pierce.

That’s some serious stuff.

Now, it’s not that this longevity necessarily has some correlation to how good you are. I gave up statistics after high school. And Jeff Foster’s in the group. But it’s a fact definitely worth noting. It shows consistency, reliability, and an investment by the organization in the player and by the player in the organization. It’s no coincidence that two thirds of those players are some of the best of this generation.

The Diesel put it best back in 2001.

“Paul Pierce is the motherf*cking truth. Quote me on that and don’t take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn’t know he could play like this.”

By now, I think we all have a pretty good idea.

Moment of truth indeed. I have been wondering if Pierce will have his last top level year of basketball this year- he’s been putting way too many miles on those legs the past 3 seasons. Should be interesting to watch. Paul is definitely an elite player.

  • NUPE Posted: Oct.6 at 10:37 am
This is a good place for him. He’s gettig older so I’m not sure if he’ll really live up to this slot, but if he stays healthy he’s one of the best.

  • Sparker Posted: Oct.6 at 10:39 am
    gross but touching

  • rog123 Posted: Oct.6 at 10:48 am
This guy is a pure basketball player. Tall, sweet touch from midrange, three and able to create his own shot. Does what he needs to do to win

  • Sparker Posted: Oct.6 at 10:49 am
i’m a boston fan, but i grew somewhat weary of the celts tendency (and pierce’s readiness) to wait until 4th quarter to really turn it on. it’s not that it wasn’t effective. it’s just that pp looked more and more exhausted every time it came to that (and too often got desperate and then got stripped). if he has done stuff to improve his conditioning/ health in the off-season, great. if not, this situation will definitely hurt them.

  • kobesbestfriend Posted: Oct.6 at 10:51 am
paul’s best days are behind him-no where near a top 20 player now

  • PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS Posted: Oct.6 at 10:56 am
on of the greatest of our times. Not Kobe-Dirk-Manu-Dunkan level but right behind. Widely undervalued like his teamate Ray(I bet there are kids here thinking of A.I. over Pierce or Ray….) At least he got his ring.

  • Allenp Posted: Oct.6 at 10:59 am
    That Shaq quote is gangsta.

  • James the balla Posted: Oct.6 at 11:01 am
He could have been amazingly good, if he trained, learned how to jump, shoot a better shot, and stopped eating Wendy’s. He has always had natual skill, just never trained like he was suppose to.

  • MR Posted: Oct.6 at 11:06 am
    good spot for him

  • MR Posted: Oct.6 at 11:06 am
    good spot for him

  • The D Train Posted: Oct.6 at 11:06 am
cosign Sparker. I’m a Bulls fan, but watching Pierce struggle at the tail ends of the playoff games was painful. I’ve got crazy respect for Pierce (going toe to toe with Lebron in game 7 a couple years back was straight nutso), so it’s difficult to watch him tire at the end of those games. Obviously dude had a crazy load to carry once KG went out (and Pierce, to his determent at times, takes the weight of the world on his shoulders) so he had a valid excuse. Lets hope he’s not so gassed at the end of this season so we can at least have a fully powered Pierce and Co. to make the playoffs more exciting.

  • Clockwork Posted: Oct.6 at 11:08 am
Damn Jeff Foster’s been on the Pacers for TEN years? Time flies for under-the-radar centers…

The Truth WAS and IS still a top 15 player recognize!

  • tavoris Posted: Oct.6 at 11:16 am
Guess we can breathe now that Derrick Rose isn’t gonna be discussed ad nauseum in every post now. Pierce is a great player…this might be a little low for him if he is in as good shape as he says he is.

  • James the balla Posted: Oct.6 at 11:18 am
Sparker and the D train – He is not well conditioned at all. He does not train like a normal superstar would.

  • La Maravilla Posted: Oct.6 at 11:21 am
I don’t even gotta read this one cause this ni99a is ” The Truth” Mr. Clutch he still go hard men this is my ni99a he should of be top 15 with out him the celtics would of lost to the bulls everybody knows that keep it up Paul and u will be in the HALL

  • rikson Posted: Oct.6 at 11:22 am
Oh man… things have changed after boston won the title! I probably put him higher, but this may be subjective as I really like this guys game! But everyone has to agree that he is an elite player. With that body ?! CRAZY footwork….

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Oct.6 at 11:29 am
    Stop hating on Jeff Foster.

  • Adam Fleischer Posted: Oct.6 at 11:34 am
Yeah, maybe I was a bit harsh on him. Sorry, Jeff.

  • Brad Long Posted: Oct.6 at 11:52 am
DERRICK ROSE IS SURE AS HELL NOT BETTER THAN…Oh…nevermind. Good spot for Paul.

  • The Seed Posted: Oct.6 at 11:56 am
If the best quote about Pierce was in 2001 from Shaq, that tells you alot about his game right now. I understand 17, because won title got Finals MVP, tripled teamed Kobe, but if not for title two years ago, he would be below Caron Butler in my eyes. TRUTH BE TOLD!!!!

  • Brian Posted: Oct.6 at 12:00 pm
    Way too low……

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Oct.6 at 12:02 pm
Hey Brad! Oh The Seed, how confusing that Caron Butler bit was. Paul Pierce, even without a ring, is better than Caron Butler. That much is not even a question. Not to diss Caron, he’s one of the more under-appreciated players of our era

  • The Seed Posted: Oct.6 at 12:07 pm
Justin, you put Caron in Pierce’s place on the Celtics, I promise you they would not miss a beat. Caron can play, just ended up being traded some, now is on a shoot first, no defense team. I would take Caron Butler over Pierce right now in their careers. Just on different teams with different concepts, plus Pierce plays with Hall of Famers, who make it easier for him. Caron has agent knee job and antwan small smaller power forward and no center. Give me the straw chewer, anyday.

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Oct.6 at 12:09 pm
sidenote: is there a list of all the nicknames Shaq gave to players? I mean the ones that really stick?
Liked the piece Adam, and for some reason I always like to see players playing for one team, maybe because it’s so uncommon. This article made me wonder where KG ranks.

  • Hussman25 Posted: Oct.6 at 12:09 pm
Good # for Paul…. My lil brother’s Favorite Player on his favorite team (and were from philly… who knew you could bleed celtic green in philly???) I would have said top 15; but just outside is close enough…

  • Enigmatic Posted: Oct.6 at 12:10 pm
Damn, I was defending Rose’s spot harder than anyone on here, but seeing Paul Pierce come right after Rose on this list kinds of puts things in a different perspective. We Bulls fans can only hope Rose will bring it in 09-10 like Paul Pierce has been doing his entire career. Much respect to The Truth.

  • Enigmatic Posted: Oct.6 at 12:11 pm
Ooops…didn’t mean to drop the “R” word…my bad.

  • niQ Posted: Oct.6 at 12:11 pm
    JEFF FOSTER IS THE TRUTH!

  • niQ Posted: Oct.6 at 12:12 pm
Can I expect to see Jeff Foster next on the list?

  • Wayno Posted: Oct.6 at 12:30 pm
Wow…this comment section is so boring without a D-Rose and/or AI debate going on…not a bad spot for Paul Pierce, I love his game. Based on the criteria of this list though I’m thinking he should be a couple spots lower…I expect to see him decline a bit this season.

  • Lz - Cphfinest 3 Posted: Oct.6 at 12:35 pm
If he is just halfway in the shape he claims to be in, this is too low. PP is a real BBall player, the kind you always would want on you’re team. 17th for a guy who outplayed Kobe in the Finals 1½ years ago. Too low imo.

  • Ken Posted: Oct.6 at 12:37 pm
Derrick Rose>Jeff Foster. Sorry, it had to be said.

  • Michael Posted: Oct.6 at 12:37 pm
come on Wayno, dont you know the criteria can flip flop to suit the player…soem are historic rankings, some are based on this crystal ball method they like to use to justify the guys like Rose

  • Don Posted: Oct.6 at 12:38 pm
damn, I’ve been trying to master that cross-step-back-no-jump-jumper of his, it’s kinda hard. and i would like to have paul’s not-so-high but great elevation-laterally that catches defender for the and 1. cool.

  • NUPE Posted: Oct.6 at 12:46 pm
I didn’t realize the truth has stayed in Boston so long. A meaningless stat, but it says a lot about a player who is willing to stay and win versus either leaving for money or not having confidnece enough to believe they can win where they are. I hope Lebron, D-Wade etc follow suit and stay put. On dif note, why do some think there that having a ring makes you a better baller? There are at least 9 players with more rings than Jordan. Does that somehow mean they are better. I’ve just never understood why having a ring or not is thought of as a measure of how good a player is. Every player still needs a team around them.

  • shotyme Posted: Oct.6 at 12:52 pm
well paul is my fav playerhe got his name from kobe….when he gave him 45…when shaq called him the truth…about 2 season ago when thr truth played among the best …we seen what he did 2 lebron…who witnnesed it….then kobe in the final…he should b number 12….and may the truth b told….

  • jdote Posted: Oct.6 at 12:58 pm
interestin comments on caron vs pierce.. wut about vince vs pierce? am i crazy to think that an orlando vs boston series would be decided based on that match up…btw.. i like the ranking..pierce is the wildcard that every championship team has.. he’s the player that can drop 40 on any given night for the celts… i actually think he’ll be better than kg next season, bcuz kg is comin back from injury and is gonna split time with big baby and sheed.

  • Bryan Posted: Oct.6 at 1:23 pm
    F*ck this dude.

  • [...] The Truth isn’t even in the top 15? * Ok, normally I really don’t pay attention to lists. Especially subjective ones where I know I’m not going to agree with much. But, come on SLAM, Paul Pierce is only one notch above Derrick Rose? I can’t accept that. No, I will not accept that. Assuming that either Kobe or LeBron is named #1, you have to ask yourself who plays those two guys as tough as anyone out there? The answer is clear and finite, Paul mother-effing-truth Pierce. How is Pierce still this underrated? I don’t get it. [SLAM: Top 50: Paul Pierce, no. 17]* [...]

  • NUPE Posted: Oct.6 at 1:30 pm
vince vs pierce is an interesting match-up. pierce is a much better defender and can slow vince down. since vince isn’t interested in D, pierce will get his 40 more because he’s open, than because they need him to. Allen and KG will be well guarded so i’d expect pierce to have the easiest time scoring.

  • Dfrance Posted: Oct.6 at 1:48 pm
I saw someone on here know PP hops. He’s not a high flyer but he will throw it on you! he’s sneaky with it. Kinda reminds me of Brandon Roy, sneaky athleticism. On the topic of Caron, I really like his game and it is similar to PP’s. I get to watch him a lot living here in Baltimore and when he’s healthy, he’s a problem.

  • Dfrance Posted: Oct.6 at 1:50 pm
    know=knock

  • Afonso Posted: Oct.6 at 1:55 pm
this pick is fair… but i´m not over yesterday´s debacle when a 16 and 6 rookie is projected as the 18th best player IN THE LEAGUE next season…just because they made the playoffs with a losing record in the weaker conference and on Ben Gordon´s back… good pick though…

  • Garett Posted: Oct.6 at 2:18 pm
Ryan Jones’ friend Bill Simmons will have Rose top 15 on his list btw, not to beat a dead horse. But i just did. Also check out Pierce in the Mcdonalds HS dunk contest, pretty decent(about 15 years ago, but still…)

  • Anton Posted: Oct.6 at 2:46 pm

  • kobesbestfriend Posted: Oct.6 at 2:55 pm
paul pierce is def better than melo

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.6 at 3:12 pm
I think Pierce is due for a drop off real soon. However, this season is not that season.

  • Brad Long Posted: Oct.6 at 3:19 pm

@kobesbestfriend…..:he is,just slightly, but don’t say such things here, you get small kids confused.

  • tealish Posted: Oct.6 at 4:37 pm
My projection for players who will be ranked too high from here on out:
    1. Melo – definitely not top 10 material. But since he just got a cover…
    2. Howard
    3. Durant – I can see SLAM putting him top 6

  • Lucas Posted: Oct.6 at 5:15 pm
This is “truly” where he belongs. Pierce has the top 5 nicest mid-range in the NBA

  • Paul Pierce is a much better player than Caron.. and Melo and Durant too for that matter. He’s the 2nd best SF in the league. Ppg is not everything. He affects the game in more ways that KD can even imagine at this point in his career.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.6 at 5:18 pm
You guys know what I think about this.

  • PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS Posted: Oct.6 at 5:33 pm
take it easy on Durant…by the end of next year all of you are going to be deeply in love with him…you adore numbers and Durant was easily averaging over 30 serious(meaning: not with A.I. “efficiency”) ppg before he got injured….

  • ysoserious Posted: Oct.6 at 5:40 pm
It kind of funny how overrated Paul Pierce became when Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came around. The same man who had only two winning season in the weak east before 2007-2008 season. It must be that finales MVP Which rightly belong to Ray Allen who had the better serious, Am missing something..

  • Bigbeats'96 Posted: Oct.6 at 5:43 pm
Im a die hard lakers fan and theres no doubt i hate paul pierce for beating my lakers back in 2008 but the truth is the guy can ball. He’s been consistently good in this leauge for ten years on the same squad and nows arguably the leader and go to guy for one of the top 3 teams in this league. His best days stats wise are behind him but i see him having one or two more years competing for the title but to no avail, Kobe and squad out west too talented and younger than aging celts L.A. back to back to back! Yeah i said it.

Im a lakers fan but Paul pierce can ball. He can shoot the three or take anyone one on one at the top of the key, he plays great defense especially in the fourth qtr. He has been consitently god for ten years on the same squad and is now the leader and go to guy for one of the leagues top 3 teams. His stats are as high as they’ll go but he will continue to compete for another title for the next one or two years.

isnt this supposed to not be on past performance?
i like paul pierce and this is the best article ive read about him
but i was hoping for some stats or something

  • Hursty Posted: Oct.6 at 7:30 pm
He looks like he’s in constant pain whenever he’s shooting a jumpshot. Like he’s trying to throw a rock off his chest, or doing a bench press that’s just too heavy.
Can still ball though. No doubt about his game.

  • Klav Posted: Oct.6 at 8:21 pm
The man from Inglewood, well dude is the Truth, but I’m still not forgiving dude for flopping in the Finals. I’ll always hate him for that.

  • Steve Posted: Oct.6 at 9:45 pm
Is Pierce a HOF’er? I am not convinced that he is.

  • Steve Posted: Oct.6 at 9:48 pm
Nice player, but 2nd tier his entire career except for one month.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.6 at 10:00 pm
… Obviously Pierce is a hall-of-famer. Its not even a question right now. His number is going up in the rafters of Boston and his name is getting in that Naismith HOF without a doubt.

  • Steve Posted: Oct.6 at 10:11 pm
The argument can be mae for his inclusion, but I don’t see how he can be a lock. The HOF should be limited to the best players of a generation and Pierce has never been top 5 in his generation, again with the exception of one month. Very good without being great shouldn’t get you in. I agree he will get his numbe retired by the C’s, but that is a different argument altogether.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.6 at 10:17 pm
Career averages of 22.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.6 steals a game with a .366 three point percentage and a .798 free throw percentage. Eight all-star selections. One ring. One Finals MVP. And…he just might get one this year. I think Pierce is in the Hall of Fame.

  • Steve Posted: Oct.6 at 10:33 pm
Remember most of those stats were obtained on one man teams. Other players could also put up big stats in the same situation. One time all-NBA second team, three times all-NBA third team. NEVER all-NBA first team. Beaten out over the journey by such luminaries as Michael Redd, Eddie Jones, Baron Davis, Sam Cassel, Agent Zero. Again can understand the argument for putting him in, but in my eyes he is a good but not great player and having him in diminishes the value of the HOF.

  • Steve Posted: Oct.6 at 10:34 pm
Fan vote all star selections shouldn’t be used to decide if someone is a HOF’er or not … especially when the player is from a big market.

  • Joe A Posted: Oct.6 at 10:38 pm
Pierce is definitely a Hall of Famer. Also, he, along with Bernard King, were the biggest omissions from the SLAM Top 50 list from a few months back.

  • rog123 Posted: Oct.7 at 12:24 am
How can howard be overrated when he is clearly the best center in the league. Top 5 without question. Durant and melo are also top 10 material for sure

  • Furious Posted: Oct.7 at 1:31 am
I dont think Pierce is a lock for the HOF, but he definately deserves it more than plenty of the scrubs who get in based on college/international ball only.

  • PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS Posted: Oct.7 at 2:02 am

  • T Money Posted: Oct.7 at 3:25 am
I would like to challenge the notion that Paul Pierce is poorly conditioned. Dude is 9th amongst active players in minutes per game, while averaging 22, 6 and 4.

  • PANAGIOTIS VASILOPOULOS Posted: Oct.7 at 3:49 am
@Gaber….:i didn’t forget him, when healthy he is somewhere between Duncan and Pekovic….

    Pierce>>>>>Parker

  • Lazarus Posted: Oct.7 at 5:42 am
Top 10 no question in my mind. But then again I doubt he will have a top 10 season, probably in cruise control. He will pick it up come playoffs though. I think another finals MVP is on the tables, book it.

  • Furious Posted: Oct.7 at 7:18 am
    Greek dude, you’re forgetting Sullivan.

  • Shem Posted: Oct.7 at 7:20 am
Pierce is 9th among minutes but to be honest when i watch him play, he looks like hes saving his energy for offense. He doesnt look like he has an intensity on defense. I doubt her poorly conditioned because to play in the nba i think the highest body fat % you can have is 7 but i would say hes not as conditioned some other stars like lebron and nash.

  • Shem Posted: Oct.7 at 7:20 am

@Furious&everybody…: I AIN’T FORGETTING NOBODY!!!! i just ain’t writting all the names(there is some space left if you notice). Put Sullivan somewhere after Howard.

  • T Money Posted: Oct.7 at 8:37 am
@Shem: Pierce has played on some pretty horrific teams that have needed him to score and distribute excessively to even remain competetive. He has played decent defense when it mattered. Certainly not worse than Dirk, Durant, Parker, Melo and Amare, all of whom are ranked higher.

  • DP Posted: Oct.7 at 9:24 am
Pierce should have been mid 20′s maybe higher. I see how this ranking goes because he is the soul of this team at times. I hate him but I cannot deny he knows how to put the ball in the hoop. play wit it.

  • #10 Posted: Oct.7 at 10:09 am
Unrelated, but are there any argumentative or persuasive essays regarding the NBA that Slam has wrote? I need to counter one for my english assignment so if someone could help me out with that it’d be appreciated, thanks.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Oct.7 at 10:10 pm
Yeesh, this is too high for my taste.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Oct.7 at 10:13 pm
Anyone who think the C’s wouldn’t trade PP for Caron Butler is out of their minds.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Oct.7 at 10:14 pm
That one dribble pull up is murder though… can’t hate on that.

  • tavoris Posted: Oct.8 at 12:20 pm
ciolkstar, they probably wouldn’t. Butler is nice-and the closest player to Pierce-but he’s not healthy enough to make that a worthwhile trade.

stop hating on the truth before kg and ray came in he was still in the top 20, even more so seeing how he led his team to the playoffs more so than not, and on top of that, he didn’t play like McGrady, but led his team deeper into the playoffs………..

Paul Pierce is my favorite player since His Airness has first retired. I’ll take him over ball hog Kobe, or Manchild Lebron. He may not be the most athletic out of the bunch but he still put up his numbers.Even the best defender can’t guard him one on one. On his best days they have to triple team him. He might be older with a banged up knee but The Truth is remain with a vengeance for another title.
