Top 50: Jason Kidd, no. 44

The definitive ranking of the NBA’s best players.

by Doobie Okon

On last year’s Top 50 rankings, Jason Kidd ranked 45th. This year, the savvy veteran point guard of the Dallas Mavericks has moved up a spot. That may not seem like much of a jump to you, but it’s quite impressive for the oldest guy on the list to move up, let alone remain in the Top 50 at all. But at age 37, the Kidd formerly known as Ason is still running offenses to a tee. And at age 37, he is still better suited for the pJason Kiddosition than most point guards in the NBA.

Has Jason lost a step? Sure. But it’s not like he’s breaking down. He’s still more durable than most point guards, playing in at least 80 games the last five seasons and also averaging 36 minutes a game last year, sixth amongst point guards.

And the Kidd isn’t taking up space at his ripe old age either. Jason’s first season (‘94-95) was the last and only year in which he finished outside the top five in assists. No difference last year, folks — his 9.1 assists per game was good for fifth behind only Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Rajon Rondo. The court vision is still there. The speed? Eh. The J? Eh. The defense? Eh….it hasn’t improved with age, but he’s still one of the better defenders at the position.

So how do you stick around like JKidd has all these years? Clearly the 10-time All-Star has kept in great shape, but his decision making seems to be just as keen as it was in the ’90s. Out of those top five assist leaders, Kidd’s 3.71 assist-to-turnover ratio was second only to Chris Paul, who played in just 45 games for the Hornets last year.

And maybe, for Kidd, his ability to stay up there with the best, year in and year out, goes beyond the stats. Maybe it’s a matter of hunger. Now in his second stint with the Mavericks, Jason isn’t spending his twilight years fading away from relevance on a sad team, but, instead, he runs a squad that has legitimately contended for the last decade. And the expectations shouldn’t diminish for ‘10-11, where the Mavs will get Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood for a full season in addition to the core of Kidd-Dirk-Terry-Marion.

Dallas is still one of the best teams out West, but those four ain’t getting any younger and you can’t help but think that their window is closing. And like his team, Jason’s first championship ring still eludes him, and that has to be so frustrating for a 16-year vet who hasn’t missed the Playoffs since 1996. Kidd’s 121 playoff games is by far the most of any active player who has not won a championship. Nowitzki is a little bit behind Kidd at 103 playoff games, so you know there’s no shortage of desire amongst the two Dallas stars for the upcoming season.

Jason has the stats (10,923 career assists, second only to John Stockton), the All-Star pedigree, and plenty of numbers to ensure him in a spot in the Hall of Fame someday. So now, for Kidd, it’s about one thing and one thing only — that Larry O’Brien. And whether or not he gets his hardware someday, and whether or not you think Kidd should warrant this No. 44 ranking, it’s impressive that this 37-year-old is still getting the respect and recognition as one of the best.

Oldie but Goodie. Still gets the job done and I’ll take him over that punk Ricky Fabio any day.

Where is Anna..? In …. China??!! One of the all-time greats (ha,ha,ha!!) 5 years younger than Jkidd and whith no micro surgury…?? Are you sure??? I-M-P-O-S-I-B-L-E….

  • Dagger

Let’s not forget that Kidd has transformed himself into a deadly three-point shooter.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Hmm, I’m not so sure about this one…yeah Kidd is still good but will he be producing more than Horford and Mayo? He’s not gonna crack double digit scoring or assists and his rebounding will continue to drop…

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

A 19 year old Ricky sent Jkidd’s corpse on the bench and that was 2 years ago….imagine what happen if they play now….(maybe a heart attack??)
    Calderon>>Billups>>Milos>>>Drose>………..>Rondo………………………………….>>Jkidd>>>>…………………………………..Anna>>>……………………………………………………………………..me.

  • Overtime

cosign Jtaylor. And his jumpshot has improved a lot, which he should get credit for at his age

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

Everything seems pretty good so far.
So, while there’s really nothing to talk about on this issue, WOW can I really browse thousands of local single girls on zoosk.com? Do they all look like that? I like that girl on the left, second one down, she looks all sassy and tan. Girl on the top right looks like someone I slept with though, so that’s always a plus, I’ll be more calm. Oh, but the girl on the right second one down looks like a monster in the bedroom. Argh this decision is so hard!!!

  • http://dsjkfl.com Jukai

Spanny: Isn’t it funny how Gilbert Arenas is once again over Allen Iverson?

  • JTaylor21

@GB, don’t let Fabio’s overrated play in the olympics and euro-league fool ya, dude will be twice as overrated when he decides to man up and come to the league. Also cu*teron> billups HAA HAA, Milos>>DRose HAA HAA HAA HAA HAAA, you greeks must be bad at telling jokes maybe that’s why your country has been occupied more than Paris Hilton’s crater.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

Jukai – what are your thoughts on the remaining point guards yet to be listed? There are more than 11 guys at PG who should/could be here.
CP, Jennings, Deron, Nash, Rondo, Brooks, Rose, Westbrook, Harris, Nelson (beginning to think he didn’t make it), Parker, Evans (unless he’s classed as a 2), Mo Williams (or not), Baron Davis, Curry (eh). That’s 15 guys, and 11 spots. Not saying they should all be on the list, but they all deserve consideration.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com Masr

oh wow milos > drose??? “Ain’t that some sh!t?”

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

seriously??? who da heck is Anna?????

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Hursty, I know I’m not jukai, but I’d say that the order (from worst to best) goes: Brooks, Curry, Parker, Jennings, Nash, Evans, Westbrook, Rondo, Rose, Deron, Paul

  • underdog

I look up to players, who mange to adapt their game to their age. JKidd is awesome. Anyway it’s amazing how the Mavs always have a pretty good roster on paper, and how they never won anything.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

    Wow caboose…westbrook over Nash?

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

Hursty: Welllll I think CP, Jennings, Deron, Nash, Rondo, Rose, Westbrook, and Parker will all be on the list. Those are the guarantees.
Brooks? Not sure. Don’t think he’s gonna improve much and you’d think he’d be on the list very soon. Can’t see Mo Williams on it without Lebron passing to him. Baron Davis is a no. Stephen Curry I could see coming up but… I dunno. If we don’t see him at 35, then he’s not here either.
CP and Deron will be in the ten spot. Nash at 15 (he’s gotta age SOMETIME, right?). Jennings will be low 30s to uppper 20s. Rondo is 20s. Rose will make top 10, not sure I’d agree but he will. Westbrook is in the 30s.
Harris? Not sure they should make it. We’ll see.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

    Oh, I gotta order them?
Paul, Deron, Rose, Nash, Rondo, Westbrook, Parker, Jennings, Wall, Curry, Brooks, Harris. Davis is somewhere inbetween healthy, wayyyyyy out of this list unhealthy.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

AlbertBarr, I know it sounds odd but Nash is getting older (that argument has to work one of these years), he doesn’t have Stoudemire to pass to anymore, and Hedo will take away some of the assist numbers because he is a ball-dominant small forward. I see Nashty putting up about 17=6 and 8 while I can see Westbrook averaging 21 and 7. And, based on the fact the Thunder will get more wins than the Suns, Westbrook is higher in my book

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

17 and 8* idk what that typo was about, plus westbrook’s rebounding numbers will be better

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

Anna definitelly coming sometime later,….i don’t give up my hope so easily, i pray to god all day for this (Walt Disney, please do justice here!!!!)

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

Davis would have been in China 2 years ago if he didn’t have a guaranted contract…all those circus acts (anna, howard, iggy, starbury, etc) are out of the league once their athletisism stops being superhuman….

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Giannis is a funny guy, not intentionally of course

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

  • http://hoopmixtape.ning.com/ Simon S.Y Lawy

WHO’S ANNA ?????? SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME !!!!!

  • tavoris

Greek dude…Iverson is TWO years younger than Kidd. Not 5.
Oh, and ur “expertise” has been grossly disproven this summer, so feel free to put your tail back between your legs and saunter off.

Good write up on Kidd, BTW.

  • larrylegend

Anna = A…. come on, it’s not that difficult!

  • tavoris

@Simon-he calls Allen Iverson the “Anna Kournikova” of basketball. he’s mainly speaking about an unsubstantiated rumor that Iverson was considering playing in China. What really happened is that the team made him an initial offer, and it was ignored.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

lol @Jukai 1:29- take your talents to ESPN and take 3 hours to make a Decision.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Nash’s shooting % and offensive efficiency are about just as far ahead of Westbrook as Westbrook is athletically and defensively ahead of Nash. They are like polar opposites that contribute a similar amount on their overall body of work.

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

One of the best pgs of all time, and hes don it at the highest level his whole career, not just the last 5 like a certain ‘mvp’ we all know

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

once again…: I tried really hard to find somebody else in the world of sports who has achieved what our cute “answer” achieved (meaning: almost global stardom WITHOUT winning ANYTHING, NOWHERE,NEVER.) and Anna Kournikova is the closest thing i could find. If somebody else can find something better i would really apreciate.all started when SLAM 3 years ago put one of the all time greats who HAS WON, EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE(MANU) under(!!!!) somebody who is his exact opposite (never won nothing, nowhere, never…),putting a future hall of famer under a bball nobody.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

so….stop blah, blah, blah, and give me a closer equivalent.difficult eh??? Better keep try(cause even tihs you can’t do properly) to insult…

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Hmm, this one i don’t agree with. Two regular seasons in a row, Ason has been in the upper PG-echelon of the Nba, even making improvements on 3Pt shooting. Then 2 seasons ago, he couldn’t handle a rejuvenated Billups in the playoffs and clanked every open shot he took, especially in crucial game situations. Last playoffs, the George Hill/Tony Parker duo truly dominated Kidd/Terry (and to a lesser degree) Barea. And his often lauded ‘improved shot’? Nowhere to be found. When the games count, Ason becomes a liability on both ends of the court, thus making the Mavs a fairly simple team to beat. Of course Carlysle jerking around the PT for 3(!) players and ignoring his most explosive Guard (Beaubois) didn’t help matters, but Kidd played badly against the Spurs. I truly believe that he is less important to his team than Ray Allen is to his squad, next season, especially in the post season. 44th, too high.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

(sssss……silence in the “Anna suporters” section of my kindergarden )

  • larrylegend

damn dark, that’s cold, sadly, i have to agree. but still the best court vision, and that you can’t take away. i would keep him around as long as i could to teach the young pg’s the position.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

g**gle has almost broken down….billions of tries with the same Q(‘athlete not named Anna Kournikova that achieved multi year stardom without winning ANYTHING,NOWHERE,NEVER’) and still no result….

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

@larrylegend: yeah, i know. 9 dimes per game at 37 is nothing short of incredible. He defines the term ‘court vision’, but his disadvantages are now plain to see and are outweighing his strengths, in my opinion. If Coach Carlysle knew his ish, he’d limit Jason to around 30 mins/game and work Beaubois (when he heals of course) into that PG-rotation. It would help the Mavs in the playoffs, cause Roddy has shooting range, athleticism but sadly still no poise/experience.

“athlete not named Anna Kournikova that achieved multi year stardom without winning ANYTHING,NOWHERE,NEVER”

    Lebron James

unless you count mvps but didnt ai win one too?
im not sure if he did or not and im too lazy to google it

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

C-LO : Lebron won a gold medal( with the help of other future Hof’s but was on the team)

  • BostonBaller

Kidd is still one of the best at his position, point blank.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

1)Lebron didn’t won a gold medal,Kobe did. Lebron&wade were twice BRONZE,till Kobe came and took the ball in most possesions in the final minutes of the game that mattered. 2 years ago in the other crussial game(agianst greece) Lebron didn’t manage nothing close to kobe’s. In 2004 he was too young so i won’t count it.(Those are FACTS, i will enter no discussion).
2)Lebron cannot enter tihs Anna discussion,at least not yet. His career is not complete (although it will end earlier than most of you think…you cannot dirnk “gatorade” for ever as ZO and many track&field guys has proven…) so i’m giving him the next 5 years to be HIM the one who leads a team to somenthing really big.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Stro Show: you left Gerald Wallace off your list. Cute.

  • wottywo

I give slam their props for putting kid in this spot, he has somehow beaten father time. But I’m going to go ahead and say it, Rondo is overrated I’m sorry but he is. Tony Parker is better then Rondo. The baddest thing about my confession is I don’t like Tony Parker that much. Say what you will and praise Rondo while you can, but when its all said and down, Rondo will just be a normal point guard without any true style, plain and simple. I’m sorry again Kidd, this is your section, and I give your props again for being in the top 50.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@wottywo…..:give props to SLAM for putting him in the top-50, jkidd knows enough ball to never make such a silly thing by himself…the guy can’t move but do not underestimate his bball understaning. Parker> Rondo is a no-brainer, you didn’t discover America….

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

I said with help of other future Hof’s, but he did contribute to the team winning gold. It was a team effort nobody won it by themselves.

  • wottywo

@GIANNIS BOUROUSIS….. If it’s such a no brainer why do I see people ranking Rondo over Parker. That’s letting me know somebody doesn’t know.

  • JTaylor21

Why do people have this idea that Kobe was the reason the US won the gold in 08. Just because he hit a 3pt+1 in the 4th quarter doesn’t mean that they would’ve lost to those whiny spaniards. Dude was very average throughout the whole tournament, then hits one shot and people swear he carried the team, F*CK OUTTA HERE.

  • The Stro Show

@BETCATS My bad, Gerald Wallace is one of my favourite players. I’d slot him in at #32 and take David West off the list.
