Pietrus Gets Out of Jail Free Pass

Apparently, it wasn’t enough of a Hulk Smash for the NBA: “The NBA on Friday quickly completed its review of Mickael Pietrus’ two-handed shove into Pau Gasol’s back in the final seconds of Game 4 of the NBA Finals and ruled that no further action will be taken against the Orlando Magic swingman.”

Awesome, now Phil needs to put Congo Dacos in the game and let him pull the same move on Frenchie.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Pau gasol was like, “hey, f*ck you motherf*cker!” Pietrus was like,”This is bullsh*t! F*ck you mothertrucker!” play wit it.

  • Stan

Apparently, unless a player is injured by a hard foul, that’s the only time that it merits a suspension. WTF! If Gasol let go after the slam and fell on his back, hitting his head on the floor, then threw up blood, that could merit a suspension. I can’t believe this. They are still not making any calls against the Magic even after the game.

  • Stan

I’d really like to see the same sht done to, not Pietrus, but to the person who made the decision not to suspend Pietrus in Game 5. Would be funny to see Mr. Stern or Throrn try to dunk and have Walton double elbow slam him.

  • http://dsjklff.com Jukai

This is BS. I wasn’t expection a suspension, but no freaking FINE? Wasn’t Rafer suspended for slapping a dude in the back of the head? How is WINDING UP YOUR ARMS AND THROWING THEM DOWN INTO SOMEOEN’S BACK NOT WORSE.

  • Word of God

Please. How childish. Pau is a wuss.

  • Word of God

Kobe decks Nelson with a flying elbow to the chin and you kids don’t complain. So why the indignation over a hard NBA Finals push under the rim?

  • http://dsjklff.com Jukai

Word of God: Kobe decking Jameer with an errant elbow in Kobe’s body space while looking to pass is fair play: it was an iffy foul because Jameer pretty much shoved his head in as Bryant was turning. Pietrus winding up his arms and punching Gasol’s back as hard as he could is not entirely fair play.
I’m not sure why I have to explain this to you.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Jukai:It’s because he’s a dumbass with no basketball sense. Now you know.

  • http://www.myspace.com/linkstigatorkevin Kevin Wilson

Good, no point in suspending Pietrus for something that led to no punches and didn’t even put Gasol on the floor, let alone injure him. Rodman shoved Pippen into the stands in the 1991 ECF and I don’t even remember him getting a flagrant.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

if you actually paid attn, kobe was standing there for a couple seconds, nothing in his field of vision other than jameer coming over to him, raised his arms up and over putting the elbow right on jameer’s chin. its quite obvious, esp if you see it from the above court camera

  • knock knock

Tarzan you dont play basketball do you? Kobe was standing there for a few seconds, and jameer was all over him, what did he do then?? Passed the ball and incidentily hit jameer with the elbow. Maybe the fact that jameer fell like a truck hit him in the head might lead you to believe that it warrants a suspension. Or the fact that you are just a magic fan. But as a basketball fan, Kobe wasn’t even lookin at him.

  • Word of God

Jukai-B.Long — get real. Kobe was clearing out to get an open pass out for a trey. Check your facts before you show your foolishness.

  • Word of God

Tarzan is right. Kobe was facing away from Fish. Nelson was in Kobe’s way in his attempt to dish to the Fish. So, Kobe flipped his elbow high and into Nelson’s chin. This has been called against Dwight plenty of times in the playoffs, even in Game 4 as Dwight was fighting for position against Gasol. You can’t have it both ways, even under the Kobe rules of refereeing.

  • Word of God

The simple fact is that Gasol is soft and a whiner.

  • Diogo

This is total bullsh*t. But I guess it’s to be expected, the NBA is as shady as it gets. I put more faith on cops than NBA refs and officials. This only hurts their reputation though; saying it isn’t rigged is one thing, but bias is blatantly obvious.

  • http://www.facebook.com mat smith

there is no point comparing 80′s basketball with today’s, in the 1st or 2nd round that would have been a game ban, but with TV ratings and all, they won’t do squat, wierd, no consistency whatsoever.

  • Stan

For Tarzan and Word, I’m not sure if you play basketball but when you make a pass, don’t you normally raise your elbows that high to throw the ball? Or do you have guys throw underhanded passes? You can say that Kobe should’ve been called for a flagrant but I don’t understand why you think that what Pietrus did was not worthy of a fine or suspension. Even as a Laker fan i thought the Fisher check on Scola should’ve been called a flagrant plus fine.

  • http://slamonline.com B. Long

Word of God might be Louis Scola.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

This is actually consistent with the inconsistent interpretation of the rules this post season.

  • Holiday

If Kobe’s elbow was an accident why didn’t he have any problem taking the hit and then get the pass off instantly with ease? It was a cheap shot, that’s all, and why is Gasol showboating? Have some class any other team would have dribble the clock out like a gracious winner! Dirty Spaniard!

  • Holiday

Guaranteed a large majority of you are Lakers fans cause anybody commenting without a bias opinion would clearly see that there is an edge the Lakers have and its having the refs on there side!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sesa-Opas/738856357 Sesa

Word of God: it’s true that Pau Gasol is soft but that’s an obvious flagrant foul right there. At least the league can fine him. And Probably you’re just another hater

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sesa-Opas/738856357 Sesa

It’s too bad, I kinda like the Air France tag on Pietrus. Now it’s just an Air Bag

Jukai, Kobe’s elbows are never clearly errant. He’s the elbow king. I’m sure when you watched it go down with Raja Bell as your man in PHX way back when you were screaming foul, literal or not, so you should have empathy on this. Nelson didn’t get there in time to stick his face in Kobe’s space, as soon as he got there he took one in the chops, his face was never squared straight up at all. Coming in arms first, Kobe doin’ his infamous work. Forever to add to youtube search terms that go hand in hand: Kobe Elbow. That should be his nickname, nobody should be nicknaming themselves how many years into their career. Kobelbow.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Blinguo

Didn’t know Pietrus learned the Dirt McGirt from former GSW player Matt Barnes, now on Jukai’s Suns. But hey, with this, you could be seeing him soon on that roster too. Following in Barnes and Jason’s footsteps.

  • holiday

I don’t deny the flagrant, I think it should be overlooked though considering the circumstances! It was pretty much adding insult to injury dunking like that when the game was clearly over, add that to the flagrant that should have been called on Kobe and well lets just say there even! Now clearly the Magic lost by missing free throws late, and failing to properly guard or foul Fischer! All i’m saying is stop crying they got the win and all but wrapped up the Finals!

  • HighYE

LA does not need any favors for game 5. So Pietrus’ confidence because of a second chance at playing, instead of sitting on the pine in a designer suit, closes in on a rebound and dunk over Ariza, similar to game 3 … Magic win by one. Game 6, Pietrus rides his high, blankets Kobe like he’s been doing for stretches in the finals … Magic pulls out another close one at Staples. Game 7, all the pressure is on the Lakers, Pietrus gets super hot and goes 7 for 8 threes … Magic win. What if?

Double fisted, hammer fist to the back, at full speed from 10 feet away, while you shooting/dunking the ball requies a suspension!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sesa-Opas/738856357 Sesa

I dunno ’bout y’all thinkin’. Did Pau throwdown a 360 or somethin’? That dunk was meant to seal the win

  • b4ever

face it if the lakers decide too get em back then they aint gonna like a tough hitting odom, bryant and bynum etc.

  • underdog

Yes, it’s BS, but I’d rater watch a exciting game 5 than a winning march by the Lakers.

  • Jolst

    Wow they’re really weird sometimes

  • airs

    haha, swingman. aah…

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

All who say that Pietrus should get a free pass on this one surely doesn’t understand the big picture here. Young kids watch these games and emulate what they see. Wrong is wrong. Why put suits on NBA players to create the illusion of class, when in fact you allow them to act like a bunch of thugs on the streets and get away with it. And as for Pau’s so called “classless actions”, he was getting beat up by the Magic the entire game. Howard’s consistent elbowing, shoving Pau on the ground and Pietrus hitting him in the face earlier and what’s worst all the fouls were called on Pau. I feel Pau showed a lot of class till that last HIT. After a while a person can only take so much.

  • bulldog

Let me see if I got this straight. Peitrus winds up with both hands and maliciously delivers a double fisted martial arts hammer blow directly to the back of a vulnerable player who is midair facing the opposite direction. Immediately following this atrocious cheap shot attack he rushes forward in an antagonistic manner and verbally berates the same player, daring him to retaliate for this cowardly, unsportsmanlike assault. Oh yeah, it makes perfect sense how the NBA decided no further action taken. Increased revenue generated from higher ratings as a result of the unpredictable senseless violence. I know they are praying for a Game 7 – by then we can have Kimbo Slice sing the National Anthem and we can change the NBA acronym to stand for “Nothing But A–holes”.

  • Holiday

Seriously, why is there no column for Kobe’s elbow? Why isn’t that an issue? Don’t cry about a foul on a guy trying showboat, and rub a win in another teams face in there house, and then act like Kobe’s elbow didn’t happen or wasn’t significant! Gasol was just as wrong, any standup respectable guy would have stopped and dribbled the clock out!

  • harry

Kobe’s elbow was not intentional. Nelson ran into the elbow as Kobe was turning to pass. Just remember that Howard was suspended for a game for throwing an elbow intentionally. There’s a difference. The NBA isn’t going to suspend Pietrus, not because he doesn’t deserve it,but because this is the Finals, and the NBA wants this to be a competitve series. It’s all about dollars. Totally inconsistent.

  • al

NBA just want longer series. Would it had been the other way, Gasol would be suspended for a couple of games, enough to reach game 7 if necessary

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

Ok, yall are making it sound like Pietrus killed the guy. I didn’t think it was much at all. Let them play. Emotions are emotions, and sometimes this happens. Yes, call a flagrant. Yes, maybe even fine him. But suspend him? Seriously? For THAT?! No way.

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

And I’m completely unbiased in this. I hate both teams.

  • http://Nicekicks.com MeloMan22

I Didnt start reading SLAM until after DP was editor sooo can someone explain to me why he always says “play wit it” at the end of his comments. i find that line alone is worth reading

  • Diogo

Holly Baller: Alston slapped House in the head and got suspended. There must be consistency.

  • Erik

kobe’s elbow to jameer’s face. And all the pulling of dwight’s shoulders an arms when he catches close to the basket, the kobe foul for dwight to shoot free throws at the end of regulation was silly, he grabbed his arms, an pulled down, how was he goin for the ball? the fouls are gettin ridiculous, so pietrus’s foul was just as wack as all the other laker ones.

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Holly Baller — “not much at all”, are you serious?! I’m surprised Pau didn’t get whiplash and all you are concerned about is that he didn’t kill him? What planet are you from? I think you would think differently if that were your son who got fouled from that gorilla’s two fisted punch. There were a number of fouls both ways. I too was shocked to see no foul was called on Kobe’s elbow considering all the fake fouls that were called against The Lakers earlier. The reffs need to get a hold of this thug game before someone does gets seriously injured. This is basketball — not boxing or that fake WWF stuff. If the Magic represent Disney World, I sure don’t want to visit that place again and if you “hate both team” so much then why are you watching the games?

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Holiday, why are you so worried about Kobe’s elbow and not how Pau was so brutally fouled? There were a number of uncalled fouls, especially to the Magic’s favor. “Showboating” ? That was clearly a fast break with plenty of time to make that basket. If the Magic had the same opportunity they would have done it too. For all those who think Pau is weak, I think not. “Stand up and respectable” yes. Just because he is not someone who would allow something like that last basket get the best of him by acting like an animal (gorilla) by pounding on someone’s back out of frustration doesn’t make him weak (class act I would say). Pau was also trying to make a statement especially after being brutally elbowed and shoved to the ground by Howard all game long and Pietrus hitting him in the face ( no fouls were called against them). ” A standup respectable guy”, You bet-cha!

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Erik, not sure which foul you speak of because two come to mind. One by Farmar, who is a much smaller player then Howard. Farmar grabbed his arm and pulled it down to ensure no basket was made — LIGET FOUL which happens all the time. Point being, THERE WAS NO INTENT to HURT HOWARD. All Farmar wanted to do was to stop an easy basket. Kobe’s foul was because Howard has a bad habit of bringing his arms down after receiving the ball under the basket. He should put it straight in as Pau does most times. Kobe then grabbed the ball trying to get it away from Howard. Howard then brought his arms up (bad habit again) and it ends up looking like Kobe was pulling him down, when in fact he was pulling on the ball. Instead of Howard insuring 2 points, he created a foul. No big deal because for most he’s not a very good free-throw shooter. Sorry Howard, but you’re not.

  • Holiday

“Have some class” your obviously a Laker fan, Gasol flops or complains in just about every situation that’s why he is soft! The elbow was intentional no doubt, he would have at least bobbled the ball a little bit or hesitated to pass if he had no idea that was gonna happen!

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Holiday, your obviously a Laker hater. Weather YOU feel Gasol is soft is not the point. Actually he’s very strong keeping up with all that thug pushing around of him. Class act weather you believe it or not. Obviously you enjoy THUG BALL, I prefer to watch a real basketball game. I have no problem admitting when someone is a bruit just like Shaq was when he was with the Lakers. I didn’t like him nor Karl Malone. I also agreed with Fisher’s suspension. It doesn’t have to do with me being a Laker fan because if the Lakers played thug ball I wouldn’t support them. Get over your hating the Lakers. They are a very talented team.

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Are you watching the game??? Howard is pushing Gasol all over the place with no fouls called against him and the Lakers are still holding their ground. Favoritism??? —- Not for the Lakers.

Wow! I’m surprised they just called a foul on Howard when he lowered his shoulder on Gasol and pushed him down.

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

Are you watching the game???? Kobe got fouled, # 11 grabbed his jersey — No foul called. Gasol just got pushed — No foul called. I’m just trying to point out where the favoritism and the Lakers re still head.

  • http://Slamonline Have some class

There’s nothing left to say, The LAKERS ARE A CLASS ACT!!!!!
