Marbury Demands $2 Million in China

Reportedly unhappy with the Shanxi cold weather, Steph has left his team after only a month and a half. Roughly translated (Sina via Hoops Market): “Although the team has confirmed that in Shanxi missed the playoffs, but still praised Marbury is said to be willing to Zachu Shanxi Team 2 million U.S. dollars to retain ‘Baixinho.’ Match against Shanghai, despite the team leader before the race in Shanxi said, ‘do not adapt to the south of the weather, a little cold … …,’ but this has not affected the Marbury play, 34 points 8 rebounds and 8 assists, only 23 voted The hit rate of some 9 unsatisfactory.”

Vaseline is expensive over there I guess

  • Ghost (of Otis Thorpe) Posted: Mar.9 at 2:00 pm
Marbury and Iverson should have had their own Hoop Dreams

  • BigWalt206 Posted: Mar.9 at 2:16 pm
The hit rate of some 9 is indeed unsatisfactory!

  • niQ Posted: Mar.9 at 2:21 pm
    Awesome!

  • Ansonpanson Posted: Mar.9 at 2:45 pm
    very bad translation…

  • mike Posted: Mar.9 at 2:56 pm
    What??? does it mean

  • M Cho Posted: Mar.9 at 3:05 pm
They need to hire some human translators, not some software. My head hurts from trying to read that.

  • Papa Smurf Posted: Mar.9 at 3:17 pm
I’d rather try to read the Chinese version.

  • D Posted: Mar.9 at 3:20 pm
im confused. Is the team actually willing to offer 2 mil or not?

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Mar.9 at 3:26 pm
@ Papa Smurf: have at it…http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_49b030550100i6kb.html?tj=1

  • Papa Smurf Posted: Mar.9 at 3:36 pm
ha ha, I can’t understand either of them.

  • Will Lee Posted: Mar.9 at 3:39 pm
The way Iverson and Marbury is acting, in fact made me a Kobe Bryant fan. Time proves everything, Bryant is a hard worker, admit it or not. He’s the best now.

  • riggs Posted: Mar.9 at 4:11 pm
thats not software translated, thats marbury translated.

  • Papa Smurf Posted: Mar.9 at 4:23 pm
riggs, He must have been talking to the translator with a mouth full of vaseline.

  • J Roc Posted: Mar.9 at 4:38 pm
Upset over cold weather, Wolves fans have heard that one before…smh

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 4:42 pm
How can Marbury have issues with cold weather when he’s from New York? Marbury has to be careful over there. They will… him. I wonder if he is aware of what kind of entity is in control over there? He’d better get out of there.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.9 at 4:44 pm
Hold up everyone, you’re all shocked at the translation, I’m shocked the dude is averaging 34-8-8????? He’s god damn Lebron James in China!!!

  • CSP8 Posted: Mar.9 at 4:44 pm
LOL I was lost since “Although”

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.9 at 4:45 pm
The Philosopher: that was borderline ignorant, man. The Chinese government isn’t going to off an American citizen playing the most popular sport in China because he complained about the weather. Or was that some sort of dull joke?

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 4:57 pm
Jukai; I’m not going to get into that kind of engagement. I don’t want to get banned from SLAM. But, Bruce Lee was an American Citizen, was he not? I’m just saying that Marbury has to be very careful about how he goes about his business over there.

  • NAS Posted: Mar.9 at 5:07 pm
to whoever posted this, if you dont understand the post then dont post it cuz i think no one got anything out of that

  • M Cho Posted: Mar.9 at 5:26 pm
@The Philosopher: Maaaaan, I never in a million years thought I’d hear Bruce Lee and Stephon Marbury mentioned together in one comment. You’re messing with the fabric of space/time there, LOL.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.9 at 5:32 pm
The Philosopher: What the hell? Bruce Lee? Bruce Lee was an incredible symbol of Chinese nationalism… Wow, I mean, I hope you’re not inferring what I think you’re inferring. Bruce Lee died from a cerebral edema due to a severe reaction from Equagesic. I’d stop frequenting whatever websites you’re frequenting bro… It’s very sad…

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.9 at 5:33 pm
I really hope Teddy doesn’t see this mess.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 5:35 pm
@ M Cho: That’s all I had. Jukai was gettin’ me!

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 5:41 pm
Jukai, SLAM is the only site I frequent. And you’re right, Bruce Lee was a hero to the masses, but all I’m going to say is DO YOUR RESEARCH. I really want to school you, but I don’t want to get banned from SLAM.

LOL too late, Jukai. Philosopher has said some dumb sh!t before though, so I’m not going to respond.
However, I am curious to know what sort of hilarious conspiracy theories Philosopher can come up with. Ah, the internet.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.9 at 6:26 pm
You pretty much said all that needed to be said in response to his ignorant comments though, Jukai. Thanks.

  • LA Huey Posted: Mar.9 at 6:32 pm
This post made no sense but I loved it. Keep up the great work!

  • The Seed Posted: Mar.9 at 7:00 pm
MY Lakers need a point guard, he is averaging 34-8-8, get the China Starbury.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 7:34 pm
This guy Teddy the Bear. You have no idea. For a guy who posts comments on the internet, you’re pretty high on yourself. A self proclaimed smart person. Smart people you can’t educate. They already know everything. So, they post comments on the internet and judge not theirselves, but everyone else. You try to judge like you’re self secure when you’re not.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.9 at 7:42 pm
One could wonder if Teddy the Bear has self confidence. It doesn’t seem like it. Does Teddy have to convince themself that their important? They try to use the computer for that because in their househoud they’re irrelevant.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.9 at 8:41 pm
I could use the Magic Hohnson translator machine right about now.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 8:48 pm
Hey guys, what up from Shenzhen. The translation was simultaneously terrible and hilarious.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 8:53 pm
    Hello. Testing.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 8:53 pm
Great! What up peoples from Shenzhen.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 9:03 pm
Well, since I’m pretty sure there are many more of you guys who are genuinely interested in how Steph is doing than there are ignorant “贤者” wannabes around, I’m going to try n translate it.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 9:04 pm
The first paragraph is some kung fu novel reference. Apparently Steph’s nickname is the “Lone Wolf”, probably a mix of his reputation and his early success as a T-Wolf. Ridiculous as it sounds in English, it goes along the lines of “the pugilistic world has invited Marbury, leader of the ‘Lone Wolf Sect’ to the annual kung fu meet where swords will let fly”.

  • tomtom Posted: Mar.9 at 9:10 pm
I understand that he plays in china now. But did this f**king thing have to be written as if you have never spoke a word of English before? Jesus. Standards SLAM please…

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 9:23 pm
The body of the article goes like this. “The Shanxi team failed to make the postseason, but Marbury still got a lot of praise – Shanxi is reported willing to pay USD $2m to keep the “Lone Wolf”. The southern Shanghai climate did not affect Marbury’s play, and he put up 34 points, 8 boards and 8 assists against Shanghai, but only hit 9 of 23 shots in a ‘merely passable’ shooting performance.” It goes on to say that Marbury has some history with Shanghai – he originally wanted to play for Shanghai, since it was Yao Ming’s old team, but couldn’t since their roster already was at the ‘foreign talent’ limit. “Marbury’s arrival in Shanxi answered the team’s urgent “call of distress”, where he instantly became the CBA’s biggest foreign talent. Marbury quickly overcame an initial adjustment period, and his steadily improving play gave Shanxi a tangible hope to make the playoffs. Unforuntately, the team’s overall talent level wasn’t enough, and their hopes were dashed.”

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 9:39 pm
The article ends off on a bittersweet note. “Despite the disappointment of not making the playoffs, Marbury has only garnered praise and admiration. His reputation of being being a “weird, me-first, headstrong trash-talker” did not fit this seemingly reformed Marbury. Everyone who worked with Marbury had only good things to say about him. If only Marbury could hold himself like this in the NBA, what would his future be? Perhaps last summer’s misguided experience has caused the ‘Lone Wolf’ to be reborn.” The writer then says that the Shanxi team still has serious issues, particularly with their interior play – allowing opponents Shanghai to wreak havoc in the paint – and that adding a decent big man would make the playoffs not just a dream for them. It concludes poignantly that Marbury, as with his “Lone Wolf” monicker, is again “alone”. This probably points at Steph’s status as the sole decent player on his mediocre squad.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 9:45 pm
Ouch. Excuse the typos. But it looks like Starbury is doing fine. I hope he “gets it” and goes back to the L on a winner.

  • mike Posted: Mar.9 at 9:50 pm
JOEL O’S . THANK YOU VERY MUCH. i appreciate you doin that for everyone. and Jukai and The Philosopher, thanx for keeping the comments interesting.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 10:03 pm
@mike: No problem man, I’m here to brush up my Mandarin anyway, so reading up on Steph’s exploits was icing on the cake.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.9 at 10:08 pm
Interesting, “Philosopher.” Aren’t you doing the EXACT same thing you’re accusing me of? F*cking idiot. Thanks for making me laugh at you.
    Oh, and good job Joel!

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Mar.9 at 10:09 pm
    Good stuff Joel O

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 10:12 pm
It’s also pretty funny when someone who calls himself “the philosopher” goes on a rather uninformed rant after grossly misunderstanding a computer-generated translation. Funny too that he thinks that “smart people already know everything”. Because if we’re talking about real philosophers here, Socrates and LaoZi, who themselves were mfing zeniths of Western and Eastern thought, both set about their quest for knowledge with the mindset that “a wise man knows nothing”.

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.9 at 10:18 pm
    Thanks Joel.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.9 at 10:23 pm
    @teddy and albie: Anytime, guys.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Mar.9 at 11:38 pm
thanks for the translation joel…… yyyyyyyyyeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.10 at 12:38 am
Thanks, guys. It seems Steph is one the right track, that’s just good to know. Even if he stays another season in China or whatever, or if he lands on a contender sometime, as long as I don’t see him breaking down into tears or eating vaseline or getting into a road accident or whatever on some live streaming video ever again, it’ll be great.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.10 at 12:44 am
Thanks for the translation Joel, VERY appreciated!
Looks like I’ll have to wait for the Philosopher’s gems of knowledge, since the only e-mail I got was some La Quinta coupons.

  • Ken Posted: Mar.10 at 1:50 am
Mad props to Joel. Turned this from a worthless but hilarious thread, to an actual good read. Props man, and thanks.

  • chintao Posted: Mar.10 at 1:57 am
My co-worker read the sina post, and according to her, the thrust of the “translation” above is all wrong. Marbury is still with Shanxi Zhongyu. He is not making any demands. Rather the team is talking about setting aside $2 million to keep him on their squad next year. Also, Steph is not complaining about the cold weather in Shanxi. He was complaining about his personal performance during a recent game in Shanghai. He attributed some of his sub-standard play to the fact that he had a cold at the time of the game.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.10 at 2:04 am
chintao: Much appreciated bud, but Joel beat ya to it. Thanks for adding the part about having a cold.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.10 at 2:12 am
@chintao: Yeah. That’s close to the truth. The “complaining about the weather” thing has been ghastly mistranslated around the net. Steph plays in the NORTHERN part (and very cold) part of China. The actual quote was that he said “I’m not too used to the Southern China weather, and think I’ve got a bit of a cold”, in the context of him being able to play that game. He shook it off for 34, 8 and 8. It’s pretty hilarious how that terrible translation from Hoops Market has spread around the internet, with so many commentors showing disdain for Steph “complaining about the weather”. Ironically, he wasn’t even commenting about the weather in HIS city, heh, when Shanxi is substantially colder than the south.Just goes to show how the same article, lost in translation and taken wholly out of context, can cause such a misunderstanding.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.10 at 2:19 am
Well I got bored and went to read more about Steph’s adventures. Apparently, at his team’s last home game, the crowd was chanting “MVP” and “Marbury, please stay, we love you”. And it seems he might be getting the MJ treatment at the CBA All Star game; by the time Marbury signed with Shanxi, the All Stars had already been selected, but the league officials are trying to make an exception, and some Liaoning baller seems to have given his spot on the squad to Steph. Yup, Steph had better watch his back here all right.

  • chintao Posted: Mar.10 at 2:33 am
Sorry. Erratum: Steph said that he played decently against Shanghai, DESPITE having a cold. Further, to be clear, Marbury is not averaging 34,8, & 8. Those were his numbers from the Shanghai game (he shot 30% from two-point range, but was 5-10 from downtown). Through 13 games in China, Marbury is averaging 23 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, and 3 steals per. Unfortunately, his effort has not really translated into many victories. Shanxi Zhongyu won 5 and lost 8 over Stephon’s tenure. Still, at 9 and 21, Marbury’s squad is fairing better than my hometown Beijing Ducks, who are just 7 and 22.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.10 at 2:35 am
That said, all this pales to the fact that “only 23 voted The hit rate of some 9 unsatisfactory”. That line is too incredible for words. You can’t even make that up.

  • Jukai Posted: Mar.10 at 2:44 am
That was suppose to be he went 9-23? Wow… wow…

  • jub_al Posted: Mar.10 at 3:35 am
i think Joel hit it right on with the translation, good job~ so it’s not that Marbury is DEMANDING 2 mil to stay, the article simply points out that Shanxi is willing to offer him 2 mil to stay… i just don’t understand why he chose Shanxi.. of all places.. sure the Beijing Ducks have an even worse record, but at least Beijing is more fun….

  • Darksaber Posted: Mar.10 at 4:17 am
Chintao: long time no read, my mamba hating friend. How’s life in China?

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.10 at 8:47 am
Some of you take this quite seriously, no? For some reason Ted seems to feel threatened.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.10 at 8:51 am
And some people still feel qualified enough to call othe people what they really feel about themselves.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.10 at 9:08 am
Jukai: I apologize for my taking my time. I have occupational obligations to tend to, so sometimes I can’t spend hours upon hours on SLAM. But I haven’t forgotten about you. And for the rest of the people, much love and respect. Even Ted. Ted, I’m offering services to people on how to get over themselves. No charge.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Mar.10 at 9:16 am
Joel, I was being sarcastic about the whole “smart people” comment. As smart as you allegedly are you should have been on it. You seem to know every and anything else that exists.

  • AlbertBarr Posted: Mar.10 at 11:19 am
Hey Philosopher, I’d rather read a spanny rant about marbury than any tripe you may type. Take your lame fightin’ words and mosey on over to the dime or something. Joel O is the man of this thread.

  • LB Posted: Mar.10 at 11:24 am
I would offer him 800K and a quart of Pork Fried Rice. Period.

maybe you should take a philosophy class. learn about the good. maybe learn how to argue, or how to present your ideas without sounding like an ignorant kid. either way, good luck with your “china will make whoever talks bad about them disappear” theory.

  • Joel O's Posted: Mar.10 at 7:44 pm
You’re welcome, guys. I think thanks to you guys and chintao and all of us here, SlamOnline actually has the sole accurate idea of what Steph is up to right now. The rest of the internet still thinks he 1.) hates the Shanxi weather, 2.) is “demanding” $2m, and 3.) “left” the team.

  • the nerve Posted: Mar.10 at 9:43 pm
bruce lee was ahead of every one with that electric machine he train with , so he is smart ahead of most in his time and knew the outcome wouid be making his body at the best shape

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Mar.10 at 10:46 pm
Shan Xi is my Chinese hometown and my place of heritage so having Steph playing ball there is pretty awesome, actually. Maybe if I ever visit during the CBA season I’ll catch a game and get to watch Steph play. Haha that would be awesome, and I can finally wear my Marbury KNICKS jersey again. KNICKS jersey.

  • the nerve Posted: Mar.11 at 12:23 am
i think the lakers is gonna take it all the way cant no one slow them down the cavs are real good but not ready for them boys

  • Darryl Rhodes Posted: Mar.11 at 8:44 am
Come on SLAM, you’re better than this. Let’s get a good translation and double check before posting. This is pathetic stuff.

  • chintao Posted: Mar.12 at 4:39 am
Yeah. Thanks for video link and for helping to make things much clearer, Joel. Shout-out to the one, Darksaber. I got back from New Year’s break and have been swamped at work, so my ppd (posts per-day have) have fallen off. Hopefully, I will become unbusy once again real soon. That will allow me to devote my full attention to spreading the Kobe-hate.
