Team USA Topples Greece, 89-57

The US looked good in its final friendly match ahead of the world championship. Watch Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose make it look so easy on the break after the USA Basketball release:”The 2010 USA Men’s World Championship Team turned up its defensive pressure in the second half and ran away with an 87-59 victory over Greece on Wednesday night at OAKA Arena in Athens, Greece. Guard Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers) came off the bench to lead the U.S. with 18 points while shooting 4-of-7 from 3-point range as the American men closed out its pre-FIBA World Championship exhibition schedule with a perfect 4-0 slate. Also scoring in double digits in the win were Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder) with 15 points and seven boards, Player of the Game Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls) shot 6-of-7 from the field and scored 13, while Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves) checked in with a double-double of 10 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.”

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Wish these games were televised.. Other then in the middle of the night..

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

When Kevin Love kicks yer ass, you know yer dominated

  • JV Shaq

This one was on from noon to 2 PM EST on ESPN – I imagine they’ll replay it on NBATV at some point tonight/tomorrow night. Also, their first two World Championship games will air Saturday and Sunday during the morning/midday hours EST.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^^love is becoming more and more dominating

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

10 and 12 is probably what Love will average this year.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Rose is definitely stepping up his game this summer. I can’t wait for the NBA season to start.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

c_cantrell: True, but hypothetically these are the best in the world. With split playing time, no one should be getting double doubles unless you’re Diwght Howard

  • RedRum

Greece was not playing with its two starting bigs though… no way Love grabs 12 rebounds against Big Sofo and Bourousis

  • RedRum

Greece was not playing its two starting bigs, Big Sofo and Bourousis. No way Love grabs 12 boards against them

  • Brian

ESPN and NBATV couldn’t make their broadcast more boring if they tried.

  • http://google c_cantrell

love will turn alot of heads this year with his rebounding and he will certainly average more than 10 and 12 moron

What did Billups do, anybody know?

rose is one spry young lad

  • logues

Jukai: dont know why ur underestimating loves rebounding. dude avged 11 a game in under 30 mins playin time.

  • http://google c_cantrell

dude is the best rebounder in the league according to boards per 48 min.. even better than dwights.. dont believe me? look it up

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Love’s big body is gonna be really relied upon as the tourney progresses, he’s really the one true space-eating big man we have and he’s not even a natural 5. Other than that, yeah I’ve seen a lot of negative comments about the play of the team so far….we’re still taking gold :) Fun match to watch btw, but like Fran said during the telecast Greece definitely didn’t wanna show their whole hand. Wait till they unleash Big Sofo…lol big black dude was a terror back in 07

  • JTaylor21

@c-cantrell isn’t that a travesty that a player of DHow caliaber and talent cannot even lead the league in that area. For those who think that 14 rebounds a game is great need to go look at great rebounders of the past. You will be amazed at how much their numbers dwarf Howards. Dude is the biggest underachiever in the league by a wide margin

  • http://twitter.com/queerballs dma

@JTaylor you also have to remember today’s NBA is different. the game is slowed down so much more and less shots are taken per game, and i’m going to go out on a limb and say shooting percentage is up.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Jeez, a lot of Kevin Love fans. Sorry I said anything!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

I just saw the boxscore. Greece got killed on the Turnovers. And Love needs to get more than just 11 minutes a game! He got a double double playing with so little minutes!

  • Robb

    Rose = Superbeast

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com Clutch Performer

they should Hire the TNT guys to do the play by play and half time report for the Worlds and Olympics, hear Chuck and the gang talking bout the teams, and Marv Albert ,Reggie and the Czar calling plays would be sick

  • ab_40

kevin love is this teams carlos boozer aka 10mpg or less guy. greece didn’t play with their real bigs and played their bench more than their starters. Do you realy think they’d go all out in an exhibition game? Furthermore the us team needs to stop celebrating. We all saw what happened to the teams who were almost partying on the sideline (cavs, magic anyone) they got destroyed by a serious veteran team. Better buckle up and get ready I read that they could face spain in the quarters? that would mean a very tough out for both teams. and games in the middle of the night? these are daytime games for you guys early in the morning or in the afternoon. not like us in europe we have to stay up till at least 1 am to see a glimps of an nba game.

THE GAME: everybody was waiting for greece to lose, common tactic before a big tournament against one of your major opponents. That doesn’t mean ofcourse that greece would have won if it wanted to do so…winning team USA is not something that happens every day for the rest of the world. Spain has not won since 2002, only argentina i think has won 2 times against them in the past decade (part of the reason Argentina is number 1 bball nation in the pst 10 years). To make things worst Greece played a run&gun/free game against the U.S…that’s like me challenging Bolt on running 100m….the game was really spectacular since many of the great U.S athletes were able to display in many cases their spectacular speed and hang-time.I liked especially Westbrook, in many times he took the ball at the three point line and slashed the greek defence like a rocket, if not for some fouls near the rim we could have witnessed some major dunks.Tsatsaris by the way had a great game and proved that he is one of the most skilled big men at the moment in the non NBA world. Diamantidis had also some nice passes while the rest was all U.S.
TEAM USA: From what i’ve seen up to now it is still the favorite for getting back the world title after 16 years (imagine that…). They have the obvious disadvantages compared to 2008 but they have some advantages that IMO cover most of the gap. Young guys that are willing to give it all and have lots of thing to gain if the get the gold. Also this team is completely under the control of its great coach, more than the previous ones. Thy basically luck their best big man (Bosh) and their best player(kobe). At the same time Spain (that played them to an equal 2 years ago) is also without their best 2 players, with one of them being also the best big man in the world…Argentina will be without its best player, Lithounia is playing without its top-3 and greece is at least without Papaloukas. So most everybody has major absenses like team U.S.A.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

THE WORLDS: at this moment the ranking of the participants propabilities to capture GOLD goes something like this:
1)U.S.A(40%).if they are consistent on hitting their outside shots ,a big if, the will propably win it all. They are well coached and have the usual load of talent.
2)SPAIN(30%).The closest team talent-wise to the U.S. , if it had all its players would have been the clearcut feavorite..
3)SERBIA(15%).Young talented team under the lead of the best coach in the world. Something like U.S without the athletisism but with great shouting.
4)GREECE(15%).Many big bodies, only one major absense(Papaloukas) and maybe the final appearence of one of the greatest players in the world of the past decade (Diamantidis). The 31 august game against Turkey will propably determine if they take a medal or not…

ON DURANT: i saw him yesterday and i can say once again that the guy like a breath of fresh air for the world basketball. He is the only player the last 15 years that i’ve seen and has left me truly amazed (ok, the others are Carter&Lebron but they are purelly athletisism. kOBE’S thing was not original, jordan had done it 20 years ago). Yesterday he was dribling the ball like shooting guard going against Zisis while actually having the size of Tsarsaris. On the break his movement and fluidity for such a tall guy was unreal…i don’t know, if nothing bad happens to this guy he will go down as one of the top-5 all time.At least (after what happened this summer) we avoided once and for all the propability to have Lebronze taking the torch from Kobe…

ON MY KIDS: many of my little ones are already making excuses for a possible U.S. failure(typical child behavior)…most say that this is a second rate team and ,some of the dambest ones(eboy, jukaitavoris, etc), went even as far as comparing the world champ with the annual winner of the U.S. basketball league (NBA. i know this is laughable but they actually did it…). At the same time all those fantasy leaguers/videogamers would have already crowned “perrenial dinasty” a THUNDER team (already ranked between 4 and 8 in the projected NBA power-rankings for next year ) that somehow adds BILLUPS,ODOM,CHANDLER,ROSE,RONDO,CURRY,GRANGER,IGUODALA and RUDY GAY….well, thats my kids!!!

    ok kids, SCHOOLS OUT.

  • Red

Giannis do u seriously have no life? :/ and you just said ‘dambest ones’ you realize you just countered your statement onto yourself by saying that and stating you yourself are dumb?

Anyways all this Kevin Love hoopa la is uncalled for.

If he was as amazing as people say he’d be starting. Whine all you want but front offices hire professionals and those stats are not overseen.personally I think he’s an average player. But he could surprise me and start and become rebound leader. Either way I don’t like him.

  • newzealanderinlondon

    who’s better Kobe or LeBron?

  • http://www.twitter.com/BigFutureLg ElGee

Kevin Loveis an animal on the boards, rebounding like he does can’t be taught, and kevin durants has so many tools at his disposal he can do alot because of his size and skill level

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

He’s BAAAAAACK! What would international tournaments be without Spanny sharing the “wisdom” here. Now the WC can begin. (btw, Spanny, Serbia is FREAKING dangerous. Teodosic, Rasic, Markovic, Macvan, Krstic, Perovic are very good players)

  • The Philosopher

    ^^True, indeed!
Shout out to PAPALOUKAS, The Leader.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@DARK…..:saying that Fotsis is one of the dirtiest players is so “world bball ignorant” as matching one of the greatest winners of the past decade (Siskauskas) with a perrenial loser (Carter).Ok i’m exagerating a bit, comparing Siska with Vince is on another level, after all it’s pretty tough to match jukaitavoris stupidity…but it was really dissapointing to come out by somebody supposedly following european bball. First of all Fotsis doesn’t even have the smarts to be dirty,….anyway, doesn’t really matter, just dissapointed…

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

Oh well, sorry that i disappoint you, oh Greek expert. Didn’t know i wasn’t entitled to my own opinion here. Guess i’ll just crawl back into my hole now… Wait, i don’t care. I don’t watch every single one of Antonis’s games (cause i hate Pana) but have seen my share of dirty/dumb plays from him in every game i’ve noticed him in since 2002. Of course if you as a Greek national team connaisseur have a different view, it’s your liberty to express it.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

I repeat (for those not acustomed to world bbball):Calling Fotsis ‘dirty’ is like calling Duncan ‘NBA’s bad boy’. As i said he is basically dumb. (and by noting “dirty/dumb plays” i can see you corecting it there. Nice try….)

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

Yeah, i’m gonna start an irrelevant argument based on subjective criteria with Slamonline’s most notorious european troll, especially on something i wrote last week. Yep, thats gonna happen. FWIW, Fotsis to me is a dirty player. You have fun arguing contra. This bores me.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Greece is going to be without a lot of players when these suspensions get handed down.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@Allenp….:this is one of the reasons our coach used many line-ups without the players that are to be suspended – Fotsis, big sofo, bourousis, basically all our frontline- and that led to an even easier afternoon for U.S…at the same time it is expected that the suspensions won’t be really hard on greek players since Kristic was basically the one who REALLY crossed the line…i expect to lose some players (fotsis&sofo) for maximum 2 games. This will not be a big problem, we face inferior opponents saturday & sunday. Problem will be if we have to face Turkey without our full roster…
@DARK….: and Duncan is the NBA’s bad boy.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/all-decade/main-page/i/64902/4259/euroleague-all-decade-selection-theodoros-papaloukas?lang=en&itemid=64902&mid=4259&tabid=1143&itemname=EUROLEAGU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

BREAKING NEWS: Kristic got 3 games, teodosic-fotsis-sofo got 2. No problem for greece the same most propably for Serbia also (the germans without Dirk are usually a team to experiment with..)
