All-Star ‘11: Second Balloting Returns

In the second returns, Carmelo jumps into the starting spot over Pau Gasol, but Melo’s lead remains tenuous at best. Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo continue in a tight race for the starting spot in the East. Knicks fans finally picked up their ballots, nearly doubling Amar’e Stoudemire‘s votes from when we last checked in. STAT very well could surpass Kevin Garnett for a starting spot in the East. Ray Felton and Danilo Gallinari also make respectable cameos. Blake Griffin is proving himself as an emerging fan-favorite, with nearly triple John Wall‘s votes despite being among the crowded West Forwards.

caboose no that is not what I am saying..steals per game is an important stat but the thing here is that CP3 is known for great defensive, and leads the stat by a good margin above the nearest. He has made 2 all defensive teams in the last 2 years and is excellent at staying in front of his man, putting pressure on the ball, and forcing deflections. He is no doubt the best defensive guard in basketball. To put it in perspective you must look at both ends and each teams in detail before gladly dishing out that Williams is having a better season. You must also realize CP3 averages 11 FG attempts pergame in comparison to Dwills 15-16 FG attempts. And please lets not talk about efficiency on the court. CP3 wins in that category…face it, the Jazz have better players than the hornets, and that along with DWills spectacular play sum up their record.

  • guueeestt123

no Rudy Gay? cmon, the guy deserves to be an all star after what he did to LBJ.

  • Chazz Michael Michaels

KG deserves some good voting. hes been in beast mode. he proves hard work gets you there

  • Felix

So whoever “wins” the western center spot is a dead lock for worst all star ever in my opinion… who’s their competition? I think Jamal Magloire or Chris Kaman… who do y’all think is the worst all star ever? not least deserving because I know VC and Yao have both been voted in injured(theoretically someone who hasn’t played at all would be less deserving than someone who plays and sucks)… I’m talking worst skill-wise

  • Felix

Can someone at Slam put up a “worst all star ever” (in my best comic book guy from simpsons voice) Poll?

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

CP3 is head and shoulders above any PG in the L. LOL at people mentioning casual fans, for the KG’S, Yao’s & Shaq’s (who is second in C voting in the East) then maybe it’s relevant. In CP3′s case no it isn’t. Who here has watched more than ten games this year of both D-Will and CP? If you have and still have D Will 1st then we can debate it all day. Lets just look at stats:
    CP3 – 16.6, 9.8, 4.4, 2.8 stl, 2.4 to’s, 50% fg, 46% 3fg, 91% FT, in 34 minutes a game.
    D Will – 22.3, 9.4, 4.0, 1.2 steals, 3.3 TO’s, 47% FG, 37% 3FG, 85 % FT, in 38 minutes a game.
So, CP3 is better in every statistic (including ass/TO ration) apart from scoring, whilst taking less shots and playing less minutes. Unless you watch CP3 consistently (which most people don’t) then you shouldn’t comment. If you do, then you should know CP3 is the best PG in the L.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

bashmo – co signing everything you said. You obviously know the game.

  • Felix

CP3 is an innovator at drawing fouls too… he has that dribble-in-front-of-his-dude-then slow down move, so the guy gets beat then trys to chase him and ends up fouling… he also has a -make-a-face-throw-a- hard-dribble whilst leaning away from “contact” move he does whenever anyone gets near his hip that draws a lot of fouls-lots of dudes are tryin to do these two moves also now but he’s definitely the best at it, and I may be wrong but he seemed to be doin them first… people IN THE NBA are copying his moves…which is I guess a way of saying he’s actually changing the game…his shooting% is retarded right now, he clearly got his shots up in practice when he was recovering from the knee injury…add in that a lot of these guys are really combo guards…I don’t want to rant here, but…even with the injury, if you offered CP3 straight up for ANY PG- the other GM would be going for it- even the jazz… no disrespect to Deron Williams or any of those other dudes

  • Felix

CP3 can handle the ball… his dribble is uncanny

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Who the hell is voting for Rondo over Rose??!! This is just ri-god-d*mn-diculous and Blake Griffin should start, ASG is about fun, dunks and stuff, who’s more exciting than Blake? Nobody, that’s who. Dwill behind CP3, yeah right, I think fan voting should be stopped, just let coaches, GM´s and those kind of people vote, because, obviosuly, fans suck.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

If GM’s and Coaches were voting you don’t think CP3 would still be starting Jahmai? Just look at his stats, then combine that with watching a few of his games. This is ridiculous that its actually a debate. He was unanimously better than Deron, he misses 37 games all of a sudden he’s no longer better than the same player?

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

And, you say ASG is about ‘fun, dunks & stuff’. You think any Coaches or GM’s are putting Blake in the game over Timmy D or Carmelo RIGHT NOW? don’t contradict yourself.

  • Felix

Doesn’t anyone want to debate “worst all star ever”?… no one in my real life ever wants to talk hoops-sigh… I don’t know the emoticon for sadness, but I would put one here

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Reading my initial comment, I mis spoke/typed when I said that the casual fan is a reason for KG currently in a starters spot. He is rejuvenated this year, and is the best PF in the East, regardless of Amar’e terrific play.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

@Terry, Roy belongs no were near the ASG.

  • Felix

Some candidates for worst all star (no disrespect to these guys, they just suck compared to other all stars)- Kaman, Magliore, Mo Williams, Tyronne Hill, Wally Sczerbiak…

  • Chris Ujma

    @Felix….another name for the hat…
    Dale Davis, All Star 2000.

Dependable, solid? Yes. All star skill-set? No.

p.s, if anyone would like a good cry before 2010 is out, go and look up the rosters for the 1992 Nba All-Star game. Sob….

  • Chris Ujma

for those too lazy to look, Stockton, Olajuwon,Worthy, Pippen, Rodman, Nique, Mark Price, Dumars, Mutombo….were all on the BENCH….

  • Felix

Damn Chris…That’s a sick list of reserves… some top fifty all time guys playin reserve…

  • Chris Ujma

Apologies, Pippen started, he didn’t come off the bench. Pip replaced the injured Larry Bird in the starting lineup….
Which is an amazing sentence to type in itself!

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Oh, and imagine if Sean Elliot wasn’t voting for Manu, thats his votes halved right there.

  • BostonBaller

Hey Twatter, please don’t lump us in w/ the China fans, I for one am not delusional just factional. (I don’t vote, just enjoy the game) to BlackPhantom, KG is near the top for the east b/c he has been playing great, point blank. (facts = his stats are on point w/ Amare’s and some are better w/ less minutes. My man miguel should watch some games and look at the stats for old man Shaq who’s FG% is 2nd among centers w/ 20 plus games and 1st among “top centers”. He brings things to the table that some others don’t. I’m not saying Shaq should start or even make the team (I wouldn’t be mad if he did) but don’t question his play this season. You make it sound like his play sucks this year. come on ppl!

  • BostonBaller

Chris P & DWill are both top notch and I think it’s just a matter of taste to which you think is better. Griffin is a beast. Lastly for Jahmai, the reason RR & DRose are going back and forth with votes is b/c they are evenly matched in their games. Pts= DR, Ast = RR, FT=DR, FG%= RR, Stls = RR, TO’s equal, rbs equal, Efficiency = almost identical So please stop saying RR doesn’t belong b/c as w/ CP3 & DWill is depends on your taste. it’s not hard folks, it’s ball….

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

And LOL at whoever said that CP3 doesn’t will his teams to victory. When people actually watch NOH then talk. Utah have been on ESPN & TNT several times this year, so the ‘casual fans’ have plenty of chance to see him. CP3 hasn’t been on once. Unless you have League Pass then you ain’t gonna see CP regularly, if you do have LP and you watch CP3 then you will know he is better.

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Boston Baller, CP3 is statistically superior.

Besides that, if you don’t think Rajon Rondo has been playing like an All Star this year then your crazy. He’s averaging 14 assists. That wasn’t at you Boston Baller, someone mentioned that a while back.

  • BostonBaller

I use stats b/c no matter what someone writes there are always going to be a few that says it’s favoritism but stats don’t always tell the whole truth about a player. The situations and the makeup of the team has an effect on a players stats. With that said, CP# & Dwill are very statistically close. assts& rbs almost identical, to’s separated b 1, FG% goes to CP3 by 3%, FT% to CP3 by 6%, stls to CP3 by almost 2, double doubles to DWill by 2 and pts to DWill by 6. I personally don’t have a preference but would take either one on My C’s squad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

If Rondo could shoot, he’d be the best PG in the league, and yes, D-Will is better than CP3 this year undeniably.

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Well that settles it then. How many times have you watched CP this year?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    not many. about 2-3 times

  • http://www.ebay.com Tariq

Wait, voting for Rondo as a starter over Rose is ridiculous?! I don’t mind people voting for Rose. Great player. Deserves to start. But Rondo deserves to start as well. He was averaging 29 assists and zero turnovers when he got hurt, or at least that’s what it seemed like. Rondo can stack up against any PG in the league. Ridiculous would be Raymond Felton or Mike Bibby ahead of Rose.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I never said Rondo didn’t belong, my point was that Rose should absolutely start over Rondo. Rose is 2nd on NBA.com on the MVP list and he’s 3rd on ESPN, rondo isn’t even on those list. Rondo is very good but Rose has been carrying the team and is still THE most imortant player on the Bulls. @Airball, yes coaches and GM’s would put Blake over Tim duncan right now. Are you kidding me? TD had 7(!) points over his last 2 games, don’t tell me ANY team right now is gameplanning harder for tim duncan than BG. 21.5 and 12 rebounds! This guy is one of the best rookies in the last 20 years.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

+ Who would you rather see, I guy who throws up alley-oops, or the guy who can dunk with the best of em AND throws up alley-oops. Rondo’s assists are great, but Rose has to be one of the top 5 most exciting players to watch. Sounds like a perfect fit in the ASG to me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

As for everyone who thinks that I think that Rondo shouldn’t be an AS, that’s a conclusion you made, not me. He can come off the bench sure but he SHOULD NOT be starting over Rose. That’s my opinion and I am entitled to it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I have Rose as a starter in the east as well with Rondo coming off the bench

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Right now? for this season only? You seriously think GM’s would pick Blake over TD?
Listen, you wrote something about how ASG is about dunks excitement whatever, then said you want Coaches/GM’s to be voting. You think Stan Van is gonna care about Griffins hops? If Coaches from West were picking best in the West to beat best in East, you would have both CP & TD starting.

  • BostonBaller

My East for sures: (F) LBJ, Amare, KG & PDouble (G) Rose, RR, DWade & Ray (C) Howard & Horford plus Shaq & Noah My West for sures: (F) Durant, Anthony, Dirk, Gasol (G) Westbrook, Kobe, CP3, DWil (C) BGriff plus KLove and TD or Manu It’s not perfect but it’s mine which is subject to change at any time. lol

  • BostonBaller

I could not care less which pg started for the East as long as RR was on the team, same with KG & Ray. No, I’m not trying to get an all C’s starting lineup. lol. I just think that they have a seriously legit 4 guys deserving at least a bench spot. How many guys in the East match Ray, KG or even PDouble. If it weren’t true they wouldn’t be in the position they are in now. I say we let Glen Davis come just for practice to see his goofy expressions and drooling.

  • http://www.twitter,com/AllBall247 AllBall247

I think Miami should have 3, Boston should have 4. That doesn’t really leave much room for rest of the conference.

  • http://www.ebay.com Tariq

Jahmai: You’re entitled to believe that Mookie Blaylock should start in the 2011 all-star game if you want. I’m not trying to censor you. I’m just saying that while your opinion that Rose as a starter is definitely valid, Rondo as a starter is also valid. In other words, Rose is not CLEARLY better than Rondo to the point that it would be, and I quote, “ri-god-dam-diculous” for Rondo to start. I’m not saying Rondo should start. I’m saying it’s arguable either way. Rose averages like twice as many points as Rondo. Rondo averages almost twice as many assists. Pick your poison.

  • Crackhead Jay

Monta Ellis should get some consideration. The guy brings it every night

  • Felix

you know what… watching him today… hurts me to say this but I have to say CP3 WAS the best point guard- pre knee injury- and should be again (hopefully a complete recovery- especially w his improved shooting) WHEN his knee gets back to 100%… Im just glad there are so many great points to watch though… pretty soon were gonna have to bring John Wall into this debate too… not a lot separating top PG’s (DW/CP3/DRose/Rondo- but these four are so close that it almost depends on whose hot right now)- then Westbrook and Wall waiting to step into the conversation…

  • Felix

I don’t rate Nash as high as most because often the best point in the league is whoever Nash is guarding

  • Felix

Monta is one of the coolest dudes to watch on league pass… he makes a lot of jaw dropping type drives

  • BostonBaller

Monta is legit no doubt, there are so many guards that are right there it’s tough to decide at times..it’s just a matter of taste and allegiance I guess. It should be good regardless of who is left off of the team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign about Monta Ellis. He should have been an all-star last year too.

  • Felix

Stephen Jackson just took the worst crunch time shot I ever saw… down one eight seconds… Captain Jack nonchalantly lets the clock run out before hoisting up a DEEP three… down ONE…wtf drive to the hoop

  • Felix

or pass or do F$%^ing anything else.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Which guards are the coaches picking out West? Great PGs on losing teams…- Steve Nash. Or Great PGs on winning teams…-Deron Williams? And that Centre position is atrocious – Start Pau at centre with Melo and Dirk at the forwards. Coaches vote B. Griffin for a back up Centre. That solves a position problem for an exhibition game and we will get some terrific videogame style dunks…

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Jamal Maglore was an all star once..
