BYU, Fredette Fall to New Mexico

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

It didn’t take long for BYU to get hit with a dose of reality after its win over San Diego State on Wednesday. The Cougars could not get past New Mexico on Saturday and fell victim to an 86-77 upset at the Pit.

Jimmer Fredette was his usual self, finishing with a line of 32 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, but the BYU defense had too many holes to give the team a quality road win in a tough enviornment. The Lobos shot nearly 51 percent from the field and scored 54 points in the second half alone.

While the win was huge for New Mexico’s hopes of turning the season around and making a run at the Mountain West Conference title, it did take a toll on its historic venue.

From The Salt Lake Tribune:

Seven rows of benches broke in the lower portion of the student section on Saturday, but weren’t discovered until the students rushed the floor after the 86-77 win over BYU.

A UNM spokesperson said nobody was hurt.

Of course, the Pit recently underwent a $60 million renovation that has been dogged by problems, including the failure to meet fire code standards. The benches are expected to be repaired before UNM’s next home game.

As for BYU, Fredette will make the Cougars media darlings for as far as they go, but Saturday’s loss most likely squashes any hopes of being a one- or two-seed in March. Despite having such a talented player, the Mountain West is as deep as a non-BCS conference can be and just surviving week-to-week will be a much taller task than people realized following Wednesday’s win over San Diego State.

Dude is gonna be like Redick/Morrison in the NBA………..I hope Im wrong

Hey, he’s a future Eddie House!

  • AlbZ

Well Reddick has a good career and fits perfectly fine with the Magic. Got a multiyear deal this summer. Can’t really compare him to Morrison.

I see Fredette being more of Reddick than a Morrison.

i see jimmer as more of a composite construct of every undersized white shooter since white guys started being white. This includes everyone from Jerry West (white) to Adam Morrison (also white, albeit with moustache, and not undersized). Apologies to Eddie House.

Also: apologies extended to Steph Curry, Salim Stoudamire, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Shakin Bakin Mark Macon, Michael Adams, JET, Dana Barros, and Vinnie the microwave Johnson.

reddick and morrison are not the same morrison came in and cried because it wasnt easy, reddick worked on his skills as a player and worked on becoming a quicker and stronger athlete

Just because he is white doesn’t mean we have to compare him to over white players… Got damn stereotypers…

I would say he will be exactly like Eddie House but you know, I can’t, cause House is black.

I’m just stealing nbk’s comparison, I like the way he talks about it as if it’s a fact.

AllBall: it’s an on-point comparison, in my mind. Ball handling and spacing on the floor screams point guard, but his lack of court vision negates even decent passing skills.
Still, too dead-eye of a shooter and scorer to not make the league, so he’ll be a combo guard ala Eddie House.
Reddick is way different. Reddick is short but has the leap and the lateral movement to be a two guard.
The Morrison comparison is stupid, Morrison had the height and scoring ability to be a starter in the L but had ACL surgery which robbed him of his SLIGHT athleticism and his mental blocks robbed him of everything else.

I actually talk about it like its my opinion, and I believe it. They aren’t carbon copies, Fredette is obviously the better ball handler, he isn’t the catch and shoot player house is, and with the lack of athleticism, height, and defensive decency he will not be more then a off the bench scorer / role player. Except I don’t think he will see Eddie Houses career minutes. Sorry my opinion is strong, maybe I should start second guessing myself to make you feel better
