BYU’s Leading Rebounder Dismissed From Team

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

It’s been nothing but smooth sailing for Jimmer Fredette and BYU the past month, but it appears that the Cougars will need to deal with a little adversity in March as sophomore forward Brandon Davies was dismissed from the team on Tuesday for violating the school’s honor code.

Davies was third on the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg and led the team with 6.2 rpg. He had more than doubled both his scoring and rebounding averages in his second season and was the tallest player in the starting five.

BYU has a very strict honor code, which can be found here. It is unclear what violation Davies made, but the team plans to make a statement after Wednesday’s game.

It does not appear this decision has any chance to be overturned.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

School spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Tuesday night that the school does not release details regarding violations of the code. She said the Honor Code Office of the university owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints became aware of the violation on Monday and that a review is under way.

“Some decisions regarding Brandon’s future on the basketball team and his status as a student are yet to be determined,” Jenkins said.

With just two regular season games remaining on the schedule, the Cougars will have very little time to adapt to a new rotation. With Fredette, BYU should be able to hang with any team in the country, but its thin frontcourt might now be its demise in the NCAA tournament.

I guess Fredette will now have to chuck up shots AND rebound, such is life in the mean streets of BYU….

I’m guessing he either kissed a girl, said a curse word, or made eye contact with alcohol at the local 7-Eleven. Either way, a violation at BYU can be ANYTHING. Here’s to hoping Jimmer and the crew can overcome.

    @LexLuther:

None of those things would get a student kicked out of BYU. But yes, let’s hope Kimmer & Co. can distribute the weight.

why are they ranked so high anyways??? MWC is garbage. I don’t care what type of winning streak you go on in that conference you don’t deserve to be in the top 10 until you’ve played some real talen. That goes for SDSU too….anyways, you wonder why the kid wasn’t just suspended indefinitely?? anyways

    “Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
    Use clean language
    Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
    Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code”

I wouldn’t have lasted a week at that school. Abstain from tobacco, tea and coffee? Use clean language? F*ck that sh*t, son!

    enigmatic,
that’s why BYU is a great school. They don’t have people like you attending. thank goodness.

  • ch

great stuff, enigmatic. Great stuff. lol

  • Lucas

@ Black Rick Kamla, yeah you’re right. Just two good teams and a bunch of hacks. Wait a second, doesn’t that describe the ACC too?

@Jana – PLEASE, one of my co-workers is a BYU alum.
    Dude is straight scum.
Don’t even act all holier than thou.

  • youngmuggsy

As an Englishman I couldn’t possibly abstain from drinking tea. Alcohol, sex and swearing maybe but tea? Never!

Right on Jana! Damn those son of a b*tch tea and coffee drinkers. Why can’t everyone be good people like you and me and just abstain….and then do freaky sh*t behind closed doors where no one can see. I mean obviously we’ll both struggle with who we really are and suffer from severe depression, but at least the illusion of the perfect life lives on! Preach it sister! Are you a cutter too? Long sleeve shirts rule! Just like Jesus said: judge thy neighbor

my girl had a mormon roommate in college. without getting into too great of detail, your religion isn’t what makes you a great person. but rules are rules.

I damn near spilled my forbidden coffee when I read “Long sleeve shirts rule!”

I can imagine me blazin a spliff outside the area.

real world* – I play in a mormon basketball league, in a mormon church, no restrictions on anything but cussing and drinking, just saying. (and no i’m not mormon)

Rose Petal swings and a miss, strrrrrike two.

  • DeeDre

@ Black Karma- The NCAA does this every year with a team. They did it with Davidson in 08 just because Steph Curry was on the team and they do it just about every year with Gonzaga and Saint Marys. They have to include those “cinderella” teams in the 25 just to keep things interesting and to look equal opportunity.

  • Skippa

Tea?! honestly?! and coffee?! and swearing. they are in college. its what they are there to do. and alcohol?!

  • TheBarberShop

I heard he got his girlfriend pregnant, but I’m not sure it’s true.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Yeah they’re saying he had sex with his girlfriend, don’t know about the pregnant part. In the grand scheme of things, a 19/20 year old having sex is no biggie, but BYU has its rules. Hopefully he can be reinstated, or transfer to another D1 school without having to sit out. And BYU needs to officially make an announcement so people don’t think the kid is a criminal.

  • James

Boys boys boys… Think boy here, male. Second commenter said he kissed a girl? Rules in this honor code on homosexuality. Maybe someone saw him holding hands with another dude and they decided to go nuclear.

One in ten is the ratio, people (or so I’ve read). As far as simple explanations go that would seem to explain the situation to me.

  • L

You can’t dismiss a kid just because he had sex with his GF. F**k them, he should transfer to some normal school..L

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

It’s college. You’re supposed to get laid.

  • RM#9

    @Youngmuggsy
Rick James voice: Earl Grey is a hell of a flavor !!

  • Ali

I’m dying laughing from some of these comments…WUUUUWEEE! but the kid did know the rules before he decided on BYU. It’ still a damn shame though. Sad to say there’s list of top teir H.S./College athletes that get booted from BYU, he’s not the first and won’t be the last. Come to USC or UCLA kids, you can’t go wrong, and you can get paid, Hahaha….
