Report: Kenyon Martin Will Sign Largest Contract in Chinese League History

Another member of the Nuggets is signing in China, where — sorry, Denver fans — he won’t have an NBA opt-out clause. Via the Denver Post: “Longtime Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin will sign a contract to play with Xingiang Guanghui in the Chinese Basketball Association. Martin’s contract will be the the biggest in CBA history. ‘It’s a great opportunity for him to stay in shape and stay fresh,’ said Andy Miller, Martin’s agent. ‘And it also gives him an opportunity to expand his name globally.’ It’s an exciting career opportunity for Martin, an unrestricted free agent, who won’t have an out-clause in his contract. The CBA ends on Feb. 16, but Martin’s team is talented and could make a playoff run toward the end of March. Wilson Chandler and J.R. Smith, Martin’s Denver teammates, are also playing in China this year.”

How does Kenyon Martin get to sign the largest contract in CBA history? Seriously…

What does this say about the Denver Nuggets franchise, let alone the NBA? Chandler, Smith and now Martin??

  • add

i think the nuggets lost the most players out of any team, kenyon, gallinari, chandler and j.r.

    Iverson, Wilson, JR, KMart…

    I’m sensing a pattern here…

Some guys have all the luck. One could argue that, at about 13 mill/year, Kenyon was overpaid over here. Now he signs largest contract in CBA ever. What do they see in a guy who will spend half the time on the bench injured?

i wonder how masai urij feels right about now. He was pretty good in tdot

imagine the kind of cash a good player could get. If Carmelo hadn’t signed that extension he probably woulda been given roughly the amount of money the US owes to China

So, if a Chinese team plays a “friendly exhibition” game against an American college, would Martin/Smith/Chandler back up their respective Chinese teammates? Or side with the American school?
Bet that would be a conflicting feeling!

*I meant to add if there was another brawl with the American team

^If it’s between two pro teams, I’d expect Kenyon to back up the guys on his team. If it’s against college student, like you said, he’d better know the right thing to do or just defect from the USA entirely.

Kenneth Faried gonna win ROY if Nene leaves too.

Also, it’d be hilarious to see Smith, Chandler, and Martin repping the Middle Kingdom in FIBA play as a result of this. China better start issuing those passports!

At least Xingiang Guanghui didn’t give up three first round picks for him.

LOL… not to worried about Kenyon Martin leaving his best days are well behind him

Great move by Kenyon Martin, he was the heart of soul of the Nuggets for a while, with his passion play. BOOK IT!!

Ty Lawson, JR, Wilson Chandler, Kenyon, and Gallinari are out now. Not so sure about others leaving, but Denver really needs to look at FA with JR, Wilson, and Kenyon leaving for the season.

Just want to point out that Gallinari DOES have an opt-out clause with his non-NBA team; the others don’t.

Not sure how Kenyon makes more $$$ than Stephon Marbury in the CBA. Kinda odd.

Kenyon Martin must have the best agent in the NBA. Doesn’t China know that Kenyon doesn’t have any knees? I think his agent sent the China team some 1999 University of Cincinatti footage.

yeah, as teddy said, gallo has an out and so does ty law. i don’t think they were planning to move forward with k-mart and chandler so that’s not a huge loss. jr smith was in the plans tho.
