DeRozan: ‘I Feel Comfortable’ with Three-Point Shot

We’ve taken some shit for omitting DeMar DeRozan from the 2011 SLAMonline Top 50, and we’ll be eating our words if his three ball is on point this season. DeMar tells the National Post: “‘My three-point shooting has been a lot better. I’m more comfortable with it. I’m a lot stronger and a lot more confident. That’s one aspect I definitely feel comfortable with now.’”

The truth is, as of right now, the Raptors dont have anyone on their roster worthy of a top 50 spot. And the few guys who would be up for consideration either have huge holes in there game (Bargnani) or havent really proven enough yet (DeRozan) to be in the top 50. So Slam shouldnt let the rabid Toronto fans feel bad about not having him on. Although, when you jock-rode Brandon Jennings onto the list, that brought the rest of the list into question.

Antoine Walker was more than comfortable with his three point shot….Lol just saying

  • MUBWAR

double D will quit the storm with his play once the season goes underway

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

I think a case could be made for him in the bottom 5 of the Top 50. Not higher.

  • ghettablaster

lol hopefully he can help lead the team this season, If there is a season…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

F that, DeRozan deserved to be omitted this year.
Even if his three is on point, he still won’t be good enough to crack the top 50, in my opinion.
All that being said, he has a long career ahead of him and could very well be top 30 or 20 down the line.

YESSS MY MANNNNN, WAYYY BETTER THAN THAT CHUMP PAUL PIERCE!!!!!
    LEGOOOOO

  • BRAVO

Demar derozan is way better than paul pierce

The weed in Toronto must be outta this world…

  • idrees

demar derozan isn’t good at 3pts? and i thought i knew the team in which their city i live in, i thought 2k sports made a mistake…

  • MUBWAR

trust enigmatic the weed is good down here and decriminalized. But can you stop you haterade juice on Derozan. Dude got mad skills. I think he might have the same ceiling as Vince Carter with a better will to win.

  • MUBWAR

anywayz the blueberry is calling me so peace out

  • pzl

As a Toronto fan, I would have been questioning what you guys were smoking if he HAD been in the top 50. He hasn’t done nothin yet.

  • Heals

Zogs took the words right outta my keyboard and the caps are back baby…

  • Buschfire

I Like DeRozan, but he’s got a lot to prove. I have a good feeling about him & Ed Davis. I think Ed Davis has a higher ceiling then DeMar, I see Ed being better then Camby. DeMar needs to improve his consistency, strength and 3 ball. If he can do that I see good potential in him too. I’m coming from Toronto and been a Raptors fan since day 1. DeMar does not deserve to be on the top 50 Slamonline yet. Yes… the chronic is off the hook in T dot.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

MUBWAR – me saying DeRozan has a long way to go to be an elite player isn’t hating.
You constantly saying Derrick Rose is overrated and is a sh*tty point guard, damn, now that’s hating.
One just came off a so-so season, one just came off an MVP season.
    See the difference?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Anyways, MUBWAR, like I said in another post, I been a fan of DeRozan since he was like 15, way before most, if not all of y’all knew he existed, so I’m rooting for dude.
Just don’t think all this hype coming from the T. Dot is warranted just yet.

  • MikeC.

I’ve seen way too many Raptors games the last couple years. It’s a side-effect of loving NBA basketball and living in Canada. Sometimes we have to watch Raptors games so that we can see what 50% of a real NBA game looks like. DeRozan is decent. As of now, he’s “the guy that’s good enough because the last guy that was good enough isn’t good enough any more and the other guy is in Miami and there was another guy but he pretended to be hurt so we traded him for Zo and Zo didn’t show up.” On an actual honest to goodness NBA team, DeRozan is a 4th or 5th guy. On the Raptors, he’s “The Man”. Give him a max contract so he won’t leave! Ladies and gentlemen, your 2018 lockout begins!!!

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

sucks talking about real NBA news for us diehards like this without a season. just frustrating. putting all this on hold

  • http://www.slamonline.com Megatron

well luol deng was #50, and demar has nothing on deng except for athletisim. He is my pick for most improved player this season though and in a couple years I think he could be a top 30 player.. just not yet.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Angel of Stern

co-sign megatron, derozan has mad potential but he isnt there yet

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    LOL, co-sign Mike C.

  • CubicleWorker

There was a point a couple months into last season that DD started putting in the extra work, you could definitely see his future star potential in the second half. I remember one play he was isolating on the baseline, backed the guy down a bit, shimmy shake, turn around swish J looking like Kobe…. we’ll see what happens, he’s a pretty lonely bright spot on my raptors

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Josh Smith is also comfortable shooting threes, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. And DeRozan is top 75 at best, top 50 is atleast 2 years down the line if it’s coming. Just because Toronto is horrid and needs someone to look decent doesn’t translate to being a top 50 player.

  • Brar

I would be surprised if he wasn’t working on his three point shot this summer… but as for comfortable, we’ll see when the season starts. Great work ethic and potential though. I can see him becoming an all star in the future.

  • MUBWAR

hey enigmatic Rose got game. nobody is gonna deny that. But the media hype around him is how he landed on number 9 at last season on Slam and will probably put him in the top 5th in this season which is not deserved. He brings to the table as much as Westbrook. But apparently everyone is saying 1 is a cancer to his team and won’t pass the rock while the other holds the MVP.

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

    DEMAR IS BETTER THAN JORDAN

  • spit hot fiyah

@mubwar slam ranked rose 9th last year, and it is not deserved eventhough he won mvp? or did i misunderstand u?

  • http://www.slamonline.com AllBall

Derozan could have been top 50 this year, he’s not better than Deng but neither are half of the players listed so far. People are sleeping on him, don’t know why but I ended up watching a lot of Raps games this year. He should definitely be in next year. Not too high, but 35-50.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Should have won the DC

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

    Vince Carter 2.0

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Dirk was number 9 last year.
Derrick Rose was number 12 last year.
And people thought that was WAY too high.
You either don’t understand basketball or have some serious bias against either Rose or the Bulls or both if you think the hype last year or the MVP award weren’t deserved, or that he brings as much to the table as Russell Westbrook.
If you’re at all able to, I suggest you watch some Bulls games next season, without bias, because I’m convinced you never take the time to watch them unless they’re playing the Heat, and THEN tell me the hype surrounding Rose isn’t warranted.
I’ll admit, some people take it too far.
I’ve heard he’s the third best player in the game behind James and Wade.
I’ve even heard he’s the best player in the NBA.
I don’t buy that, but he is definitely top 10.

  • http://slamonline slams chuck barkley

Derozen jus looks like he deserves to be in the top 50 because of his team
mates playin so badly ..if he was on a good team he would not have even been in this discussion..I do love his potental tho..its more of wat he cud be rather then wat he is

  • MUBWAR

rose in the top 10 is fine. but top 5 nooo(which was my original ARGUMENT). So im curious to where would you put westbrook for next season?

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Cosign Enig some peeps are crazy..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Overall it’s kinda tough, but as far as point guards go, I’d go like this -

    1. Chris Paul
    2. Derrick Rose
    3. Deron Williams
    4. Russell Westbrook
    5. John Wall or Rajon Rondo (can’t decide)

I used to have Williams at 2 and Rose at 3, but Williams kinda disappointed last year and he was injured, and Rose busted his a** up both times they met last year.
And in my opinion, Rose isn’t that far from top 5. I’d say -

    1. LeBron James
    2. Dwyane Wade
    3. Kobe Bryant
    4. Dwight Howard
    5. Kevin Durant
    6. Chris Paul
    7. Derrick Rose

I know you feel Kobe shouldn’t be top 5 either, but F that, dude still puts in work, he’s just been relegated to third by your Heat supa dupa duo.
Also, I know everyone wants to put Dirk way up high now cause he won a ring and all, but minus the ring he’s still the same player he was last year, I don’t see any significant improvement in his game or anything that would warrant him jumping to like, number 4 or something. I think he’s still good in that 8 or 9 spot.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

This is music to my ears! I, along with probably all of Toronto, have been waiting for DeMar to work on that 3. He just needs more confidence to take the shot. With that said, I hope he doesn’t end up making a full 180 and start ONLY taking 3′s like what VC did when they said he’s just a dunker. What I mean is, although it’s nice to have the 3 point shot in your arsenal, I hope he doesn’t change his slashing ways. Can’t wait to see him in the upcoming season!

  • MUBWAR

mine would loo like 1. James
    2. Wade
    3. Durant
    4. Howard
    5. Dirk(yes cause he outworked Kobe/Pau Durant/Russ and the top duo in the league)
    6. Paul
    7. Williams
    8. Amar’e
    9. Rose

  • Cheers

    1. james
    2. durant
    3. wade
    4. rose
    5. kobe

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Amare over Rose?
    Wow.
Amare isn’t even the best on his own team.

  • http://ZOGS.COM ZOGS

    1. KOBE
    2. Durant
    3. Lebron
    4. Bargnani
    5. Howard
    6. Rose
    7. Wade
    8. Amare
    9. Paul
    10. John Wall – WATCH

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

And once you realize you left out Melo I bet Rose will fall to number 10, huh?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    So where does Kobe fall?
Is he even in your top 20?

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

Kobe not making that guys top ten doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

  • seun

if derozan is going to be a top 50 player it will be next year because one thing I’ve noticed with talented young players is that they make a big leap from year two to three. derozan is about to enter his third season in the league so if he is going to become a elite player he will begin to show signs of it this year.

  • MUBWAR

oh crab i forget Kobe. He is 6th right after Dirk ahead pf Chris Paul

  • http://www.kbv4.com KBV4

    ZOGS u fool

  • asgf

Im a TO fan but this Pau has a better midrange game then this guy.

  • balher

As a Raptor fan myself I will honestly say Demar isn’t there yet, and your crazy to think after two seasons in the L with a developing mid range game he should be there.Down the line for sure he should be there, but it must be these crazy leaf fans giving SLAM dis nonsense.

  • RVBizzy

DeRozan will be in the top 50 three to four seasons down the line. That’s what it looks like with his potential ONLY IF he continually improves every season like he’s been doing and if the Raptors continually increase in the win column. The Raptors becoming a 40 game winning team? That seems possibly only if management can get their heads together and somehow miraculously receive that hand of god and somehow can sign big name players. Which in Toronto, is impossible. The only way the Raptors have ever gotten any almost all-star potential is through a draft, of from Europe. Face it other Raptor fans, the big guys just don’t come here. The weed must be too strong for them up here. But back to DeMar, he needs to lead the team. Screw Bargs, he sucks. He sucks as much as he sucks those Banana’s. He’s gotta go. This team needs to build pieces around DeMar and Ed Davis, and that’s real talk. But as far as him being top 50, its possible in atleast three-four seasons from now, and if the dinosaurs can start winning, which that in it self, relies on management choices. All we can do is hope for the best. And as for the VC comments, yes there are parallels in their games. But c’mon, that’s VC. All haterade aside, VC was rookie of the year, was a leading all-star vote getter, won the dunk contest, brought basketball to the rest of Canada, and lead us to the playoffs for 3 seasons. (does 2001 vs Philly ring a bell? if he hadn’t missed in game 7, we would have been in the conference finals, in just his third season. When VC was good, DeMar is not even close, as of now. He’s definitely top 100 though, thats for sure.

  • zach

ZOGS list was probably the worst I’ve seen beside’s Slams

  • Rainman

as a guy from toronto, i can only hope so, and have to see it to beleive it. Cuz if he has his 3 point shot down to at least respectable? this guys gonna have a monster season. 20 + ppg, i call it. Why? this guy played 20 + ball in the second half of the season, WITHOUT a decent shot… also, he doubled his points from his rookie season in his sophomore season. He went from 8 to almost 17 this past season, expect another jump and some eyes to open this season, WHETHER his 3 point shot is there or not.

  • Rainman

i also agree he’s not in the top 50 this year, but he will be the comnig year for sure, keep an eye out guys
