No. 1 North Carolina Falls to UNLV, 90-80

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

The biggest upset of the college basketball season officially belongs to the Rebels as UNLV used 13 3-pointers to upset the No. 1 Tar Heels, 90-80, on a “neutral” floor at the Las Vegas Invitational.

After North Carolina jumped ahead by four points at halftime, UNLV took over in the second half, outscoring the top-ranked Tar Heels, 52-38. Aside from the outside shooting, UNLV held a decisive edge on the glass, winning the rebounding margin, 46-37.

The game was the nation’s introduction to two of the most underrated players in the country. Mike Moser, who is second in the country in rebounding a 13.7 rpg, pulled down 18 boards to go along with 16 points. Meanwhile, senior swingman Chace Stanback had a double-double of his own, tallying a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds.

Much like the rest of their team, Moser and Stanback are underrated no more.

From The Washington Post:

“I could tell on the bus on the way over and at shoot-around how focused we were,” said first-year UNLV coach Dave Rice. “North Carolina is so well coached. We expected to play really, really well. We felt we had a chance to be competitive. We have four seniors. We don’t want one game to define our program. We want to be judged on our consistency.”

A loss is bad enough for the Tar Heels, but the timing couldn’t be worse. North Carolina is entering its toughest stretch of the non-conference schedule with games against No. 11 Wisconsin on Wednesday and No.2 Kentucky on Saturday. Unthinkable weeks ago, the Tar Heels could fall outside the top-10 by next week.

“Tar Heels could fall outside the top-10 by next week.” they could but they won’t so relax.

Greg Anthony is a proud Runnin’ Rebels right about now. That cat was born in Vegas…he bleeds Scarlet and Gray.

UNC can’t defend anyone with a good gaurds man to man. SMH. Kendall Marshall is slow (although he’s a great passer)

So. This is CB not the BCS.

Mike Moser is a beast on the boards.

been kinda dissapointed with what I’ve seen from UNC early on…same with Duke, and a few other squads. I was kinda tryna ride with UNC this season, they just still look a little soft, and they still lack offensive continuity. I’m sitting here thinking they’ve got all the talent in the world, one of the best coaches on the planet, give them a year and they’ll be great…..I just don’t quite see it to be honest. Tyler Zeller is the anti-Tyler Hansborough…dude couldn’t keep Brittany Griner off the boards. I love Kendall Marshall…at times I just think Dexter Strickland does the best job running the squad from the point, more explosiveness, slightly underrated court-vision. You got guys like Reggie Bullock, Hairston, McAdoo, not to mention Harrison Barnes who all need to have their fair share of the rock to be effective, and don’t get me worng Kendall Marshall does a FABULOUS job facilitating but he eats up so much of the rock doing it…he slows down the pace so much which is completely counter-intuitive with all of the athletes on that squad. When Dexter’s in you really see what they can do in transition, he injects some get-up-and go….really its just a clash of too much talent and too many playing styles, and I’m sorry it all comes down to the coach…Roy ain’t putting it together well…….its early though lol

  • Byebye

Kentucky is the best team I’ve seen in 10 years they are 2 deep at each position and they are unselfish they don’t care who gets the shine smh

    Ps I’m back

as much as I loved seeing UNC lose to UNLV, that game could be the turning point for Vegas in the recruitment of Shabazz Muhammad…UCLA’s poor start and questions about how many UK players will actually be eligible for next season’s NBA draft may persuade the #1 recruit to stay home…could be a huge coup for Rice and co….although, as a UK fan, would love to see him don the blue and white (the right shade of blue)

UNC played terrible for 20 minutes… Kentucky deserves #1 now

    and where’s Leslie McDonald been?

UNC has too many players on it. Also Roy Williams is overrated as a coach. Didn’t do anything with Kansas, won with a stack team and should have lost the year they won with Marvin Williams coming off bench. Roy almost choked that one away if you remember the Final games. BOOK IT!!

    HaHaHA GO DUKE!!!!!!!!!

Roy Williams IS overrated as a coach. He’s just a great recruiter, nothing more.

  • Enigmatic

I have to say, Kentucky looks like a much scarier squad than UNC thus far.
Talent-wise, no one is effin’ with Kentucky, but prior to the season JTaylor and I were going back and forth about who was the better squad and I thought UK’s lack of experience would ultimately make UNC superior, but thus far that hasn’t slowed UK down any.

  • da real

cosign Enigmatic – UK has more just as much or more talent and Calipari lets them be themselves…… the bottom line is that with all the best players leaving after one year for the past few seasons, outside of the top 5, most of these teams are even are evenly matched with talent. NCAA’s should be interesting

Roy Williams is overrated as a coach? Second most wins at two storied programs (behind Phog Allen at Kansas and behind Dean Smith at UNC). Been to 7 Final Fours, the 3rd fastest coach to 600 wins and one of 13 coaches with 2 chips. If that’s overrated then Coach K must be an average coach and Calipari’s a bum.
Enigmatic, one loss in NOV and you’re bailing on them? Give them time and the game between UK/UNC is coming up, so we’ll see who’s the better team in no time.

Ol Roy isnt a bad coach but he’s well defined at this point. He needs his PG to facilitate most of the scoring and they basically try to overwhelm the opponent. This team is inconsistent from outside and doesn’t guard anyone. Add that to the fact that no one can get to the rim off the bounce (KM only drives to dish and HB always pulls up to the jumper). That’s going to lead to some losses that they shouldn’t have with their talent.

BRK- not sure how you can include Duke in the disappointments. All their players are adjusting to new roles and they’ve gotten better every game. Belmont was tight but that was a team full of seniors that won 30 last year. Duke stood up to a rugged KU and dictated everything against #15 Michigan. If they beat OSU at OSU, that should really open some eyes.

I really like Thomas Robinson from Kansas.

  • Sayaboi

Good too see Mike Moser flourishing at UNLV. Use to catch him at his high school in NE Portland, so be ups to him. Always been a supporter of NW products from PDX to 206 #proud

JP is a wise man. GO DUKE

  • Zack

Doesn’t help that UNC shot 25% from the field in the second half… Combine that with ZERO defense and that’s what you get. Sad day at my house, LOL.

  • Cizzo

a lot of yall top rated squads will fall at the the hands of some of these programs that got upperclassmen lead teams… When I was a Senior in college we didn’t lose to children no matter how talented and overrated they had been geeked up to….

  • Enigmatic

Not bailing on them, JTaylor, just pointing out UK looks like the better team thus far.

  • http://dgcoursereview.com Bro.D.

Nah, give me the same talent that Roy has had at Kansas and UNC and I’d have comparable stats. He’s like the Man Citeh of NCAA, just puts all the talent he can get on the floor and let’s it play out. The man does no game managing from the sidelines, he just stands around with his arm crossed like he’s a poor man’s Zen Master, does his angry Sumo stance and yells at his NBA bound one and dones when they’re getting their asses rightfully kicked by a team with their ish together like UNLV.
