Pierce: ‘How Many Records Would I Have Without Two Lockouts?’

Paul Pierce has made it known he’s unhappy with the state of the lockout. He’s long been a strong voice from the players’ camp, expressing his displeasure with how things have played out thus far. But Pierce vehemently denies being the driving force behind the push for decertification, and wondered aloud about the impact of multiple lockouts on his legacy. As The Boston Globe reports: ”While the NBPA did disband this past week, Pierce said he only viewed decertification as an option and denied that he was encouraging fellow players to dissolve the union. ”I never told nobody to decertify,” he said. “That’s not something I was (doing). A lot of players around the league have respect for me and they call me in the summer because they know I got an understanding of what’s going on with the negotiations and a lot of players asked me about decertification. And all I did was bring the information to them. I didn’t push it one way or another.” Pierce said players began calling him about their options. ”It was like they wanted to know so we got a conference call with a lot of the guys that was interested in it, talked to a lawyer about the ins and outs about it and that was pretty much it,” he said. “At the end of the day, it ain’t Paul Pierce saying this is what the guys are going to do. I’m only one vote. It’s got to be decided by everybody.”…If the schedule was intact, Boston would host Golden State on Sunday at TD Garden. ”I’m very disappointed. I should be playing today,” Pierce said. “Who’s on the schedule? I think there’s disappointment on both sides. I was in here in ’98, who knows how many records I would have broken if I hadn’t gone through two lockouts?”

I like how of all the things he said there, Slam chose the bit at the end after all the important quotes, nice work.

  • ch

I think he’s talking more about Celtics records and not NBA records.

I got a lot of respect for PP but come on “I never told nobody”.

  • Heals

Ahhh, mike and GP, you guys know there are these things called team records too. So when you play for a team with the richest history in the L (Lakers fans ya’ll needed 2 cities to do it and you’re still down 1, not to mention the lopsided head-to-head record) breaking team records means something. Especially when a majority of your teams’ fanbase idolizes previous greats, but doesn’t know if you (PDouble) would crack the teams all-time starting 5. I was torn with him being one of the more vocal players for the NBAPA. On one hand you gotta respect the POV ad clout, but on the other you gotta live with the backlash from being front and center. Anyways just more of the same PP34 living up to his nickname on and off the court as always…

  • Stroshow

I’m really excited for two years from now when the Celtics are completely irrelevant again.

  • http://slamonline.com illwill

damn i didnt know Paul was near record breaking status lol

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Does Paul Pierce realize the lockouts has only cost him like 45 games so far? You would have zero more records. Even Celtics Records. Plus those were 45 games out of Kobe’s career too. And you’re beaten him in nothin.

Lots of mouth breathers here unable to distinguish league and team records. Oh, and for the illiterate commenters: he’s referring to lost playing time from both lockouts

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Yeah which is a total of approximately 42 games. Give or take a couple.

^what *Heals said… I would just add that Paul Pierce would definately crack the starting-5 with PG Cousy SG Pierce SF Havlicek PF Bird C Russell 6th man Dave Cowens

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

    1. John Havlicek 26,395 2. Larry Bird 21,791 3. Paul Pierce 19,094

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

well the first lockout they missed like 30 games, and maybe 10 so far this year, so…none.

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

GTWeezy, Bird wasnt a PF and have to put Mchale on that list, slide Bird and Havlicek down one spot…..and take peirce off the list.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

^ Yep. Although Bird definitely could play PF. You just can’t leave McHale out.

With no NBA and no drug testing Pierce has obviously taken up smokin’ weed

Dear Paul Pierce, When you abuse Union power to shut down a mini-economy like the NBA, at the time when America needs more business, not less, you show your true character. We are scrambling to find ways to pay our bills and feed our families. The NBA used to be an escape from all that, but Big Labor got its dirty fingers in our sport. As happens with every union, it has become more about the Union’s legalities and what’s good for the Union than anything to do with fans, basketball, or even business. Unions were supposed to protect business and keep people working. If you added up all the stoppages, violence, and pain that Unions have caused, are they worth serving any more? Unions are the new land barons: untouchable, power-hungry at all costs, and accountable to no one.

  • http://nba.com/celtics lights out

one day we’ll be asking, how many more threes would ray have had without two lockouts?

  • Heals

Yup this is all on PDouble Georgie Boy. You Ucking Moron, enjoy your Cain in 2012 campaign run douche. I love idiots like yourself that twist facts and reality to fit perceptions that are warped or counterproductive to begin with. It’s all about the 9-5er’s right? Your freemarket ideologies should have you clamouring for shht owners to sell their clubs, but instead your criticism is reserved for the players (who are predominantly what?). So rather than speak the truth and go down fighting for what’s right you dikk ride for people who are way richer than you’ll ever be with the hopes you can come up by riding their coattails. “If you added up all the stoppages, violence, and pain that Unions have caused, are they worth serving any more?” – You ucking tool. Here’s to hoping your puppet master doesn’t tug too hard on the strings tonight. We both know that you know PP34 has less than nothing to do with why “We are scrambling to find ways to pay our bills and feed our families,” but enjoy scapegoating your issues. The absurdity of assuming that moniker to go at The Truth in way you did is beyond comprehension, so I’ll give you the credit of being the most sarcastic person on Earth rather than believe all the shht I typed earlier…

What a arrogant prick, honestly i dont like PP at all. People losing jobs etc and he is worried about his records, shut your mouth, youve never been better then Kobe.

    I hate Paul Pierce, he’s such a complaining b*tch

  • Heals

Ha, it’s too sweet, you’re a Breitbart lemming. I love it, you folks are so transparent, I just stereotyped your a$$ up and down, but was spot-on. Talk about blowhards, Breitbart, ahhhhhh, thanks man I needed a good laugh tonight…

  • robb

you’re an idiot Pierce. That’s the truth.

  • BBaller

Bird owns that 3 spot forever. Is KG a Celtic or a Timberwolve? If he is, he is the only active Celtic that can argue about being in the top 5 all time Celts.

  • Chukaz

I wonder if people realize that ppl that work security and the ushers and concession stand workers don’t actually do those things for a living. If anybody thinks that those people actually live off working less than 5 hrs per game and there’s 41 games per season then they need a reality check. There’s economic data that shows that the NBA doesn’t bring much to a city’s economy. Also, Paul Pierce ain’t doing this for himself he’s doing it for the young people. He’s under contract for the next 3 years if I’m not mistaken so whatever happens with the new CBA doesn’t affect him financially as long as there’s no salary rollbacks. NBA vets are taking a hit for the young players. Kobe will never see the 25 million he’s missing out on. KG won’t see his 20 million. PP won’t see his money. Ray Allen won’t see his money. This is for D Rose and John Wall and Blake Griffin and kids that are still in college. Players aren’t being greedy. They were willing to take a 12 percent pay cut as long as they were free to sign where they pleased. This is America. The players are employees not property and the fact that the owners wanted to keep the players from looking for work in different cities is criminal. This is all on the owners. They’re claiming losses and the players where willing to cover those fictitious losses. Why aren’t there games? Its all on the owners. All of it.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

^ Chukaz is a smart man.

  • EJ

No way KG is higher on the Celtics list than Pierce.

  • http://knicks.com Gametimeweezy

Bird used to start at the 4 when Reggie Lewis started at the 3 thats the only reason I considered it…. and does anyone else think Reggie Lewis could have been the original Paul Pierce?

  • http://www.nba.com/2011/news/features/steve_aschburner/10/27/lockout-q-and-a-kevin-murphy/index.html Allenp

The media has pushed the “People are losing jobs!” meme.
It’s silly. Data shows that if people don’t spend money around arenas, they spend it somewhere else. So, if one business cuts staff, another business hires staff. So the jobs move around, they aren’t lost totally. And that’s pretty much how the economy works all the time.
The amount of bad information people have is telling. People are either willfully ignorant of some basic facts, or they’ve been fed some inaccurate data for some reason. Whether it’s laziness or an ulterior motive there is no reason so many people should not have basic information with which to make their judgements. It’s cool if you disagree with me, I just hate when people disagree and spout bogus information to justify it.
