Report: Kobe Supports 50-50 Split of BRI

There is a slim chance that a deal can be reached at Saturday’s session, and this may be the Players Union’s last chance to land the 50-50 BRI deal. The Lakers’ superstar allegedly would take the even split: “Two sources with knowledge of his thinking, meanwhile, told SI.com that Bryant has indeed made it known that he’s open to considering the down-the-middle split. Bryant, it is believed, has indicated to union leaders on numerous occasions that — so long as the system issues were adequately resolved — the season was not worth sacrificing if the negotiations came down to a couple percentage points on BRI (which, to be clear, are hardly chump change considering they’re worth approximately $40 million annually per percentage point).”

Even thought i cant stand most of the owners, i agree wit Kobe. Just take the 50/50 deal. and try to make up for it next CBA in 7 years.

just listen to the mamba and let’s start this season already

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com yada

lol make it up next 7 years? its gonna be 40 60 then. kobe just thirsty cause he only got a few years left. which is understandable

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Once again, Kobe sells out his teammates.

  • Heals

On board with Cho and yada. Mamba making me eat my words from the MJ piece(try to support him once a year and this how he repays me!?) I wish they’d report Buss feels the same way, but we all know why that’s not happening…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

BS. Of course he doesn’t care about the ramifications of what a 50/50 split does to future players down the road because he has about 3-4yrs left in his career. Don’t agree with him but I can’t blame him.

  • http://gmail.com z

    @jtaylor: hate kobe much?

  • robb

Kobe’s just being reallistic. The owners won’t go lower than 50-50. There’s a time during any negotiation where people have to know when it’s time to stop pushing. For the NBA players, now it’s the time, otherwise they could get even less. Take the 50-50 split.

  • neaorin

what exactly does “open to considering the down-the-middle split” mean?

  • Jeremy(Georgia Boy)

Kobe can say the sky is blue and JTaylor and the other kobe haters would say he wrong

Guess What It’s either 50/50 Or NO NBA

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Kobe is not “just being realistic.” He just doesn’t want to miss a season for his own reasons. I don’t personally blame him, but if I were any of the players at the negotiating table then I WOULD blame him.

  • jayb

kobe just wants to play..he got 3 years left and dont wanna play a 50 game season and i dont blame him. sure the future players get screwed but i kinda wanna see a season..hopefully they settle and can extend something in april..it aint too late for that!

  • robb

It maybe too late even for a 50-50 split. The owners are having second thoughts about it.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

The only time I’ve ever agreed with Kobe.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe is right, the owners are not going lower than 50-50. Also there are plenty of other players who feel the same way. Kobe does want to play, just like others. Honestly Kobe would have more time to heal from the nagging injuries that hurt him last year. So actually Kobe missing this season is better for his body, but his mind is ready to play. BOOK IT!!!

  • Patrick

Screw 40M times a few % points..lets get the season on.

  • Patrick

A more fundamental question, that is not being discussed, is why even have a CBA? Why not just allow teams and players to contract on whatever terms they voluntarily agree upon?

Who cares about the NBA? The gay NBA can disappear. So can the gay NFL. And gay MLB. Just give me my 82-game WNBA schedule. The WNBA is the only real sports league in the United States. Only one worth watching, anyway.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

hey kobe is making not want to buy this undrcrwn shirt now lol http://hoopeduponline.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/undrcrwn_i_hate_kobe-prl.jpg

A handshake deal is going to get done this weekend. They’ll cross the t’s and dot the i’s later, but the framework of a new CBA will be in place, and we will have basketball. REALITY > ILLUMINATI

  • Cameron

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH…@pilight..you serious?PLEASE tell me your not serious?

IF plight was serious, which I doubt, then he needs to come out of the closet.

The WNBA: What we lack in dunking, we make up for in fundamentals

  • shutupallenp

Im sick of people saying the wnba is nothing but fundamentals its really not. Lack of athletic ability doesnt mean more fundamental. watch a game a see how many ill-advised or off balance shots are taken as well as a multitude of awkward layup attempts. And lets not talk about gay, 90% of the wnba is “gay” lol

Together here’s what the NBA owners and players gotta do… Straighten it out. Straighten it out. That’s right ya’ll. Click my name, this one’s for you.

  • http://members.cox.net/pilight pilight

@Kenny: You do realize that the NBA is, by far, the most fundamentally sound basketball league in the world, right. Don’t let the outer-worldly athleticism fool you. As a league, the NBA is incredibly fundamentally sound.

Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers! Geaux Tigers!

  • Truth

Listen the stands are not filling up!! We are in a Global Recession. The middle class is disappearing!! Tickets are too expensive. 50/50 is good players!! take it!! .. Luke Walton makes more money than his Dad and Bill was a Beast and Luke is well… just warms the bench nicely. Players make enough. Either that or get rid of two sorry teams. Either way Lakers win the championship!

  • Yesse

It might be cool, but think about it in the future and then the players have to settle for less than 50/50.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I’m fine with 50/50. Stop acting like these guys are starving for food, yeah the owners are greedy, but guess what if they accept a 50/50 deal they only get paid about mmmmhh… I don’t know, maybe millions of dollars (endorsements included) a year? Oh yeah. Let’s play some f*ck*ng ball.

    NBA: Where Empty Seats Happen

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

Dear fans, arena workers, parking lot attendants, and vendors, whatever has to happen will happen for a deal to get done no later than this coming humpday. Too much is at stake for the NBA to miss an entire season. Cooler heads will prevail, and a deal will get done. Those small market teams that are pouting the most, will stop holding their breath, and eventually start to breathe. A fair deal will be accepted which allows everyone to get back to WORK and continue to grow the NBA product, which in the end, makes everyone money. Now I am about to go enjoy some football today and witness the Jets grounding and pounding the Bills for their 3rd straight W and a share of 1st place in the AFC EAST. Using Bart Scott’s voice, “CAN’T WAIT!”

  • thehypemachine

Im with Jahmai, it’s gonna cost more to not play any games, sure the first month of the season is gone, how much will NBA players lose for the 4 weeks? 50-100K….oh wait what happens when they don’t play any games this season? How much is that gonna cost players? Yeah ouch! Thats gonna hurt the bank :( I don’t think the owners will be asking for cash advances to keep on living the good life, take the deal 50/50 and get back on the court and earn your $$$

  • Red Star

    Really Slam? Really!!

  • manu

i agree wit plight…the wnba players aren’t pansies ther only makin 30,000 a year and still competing night in n out i respect them….nbas a bunch of soft fuchsias who think ther worth 1mil when ther not at all…half of the guys in the nba r complete waste of space can’t shoot a jumper to save ther life

  • robb

The owners offered a deal yesterday. Stern said the players should accept it by wednesday, if not the next deal they’d be offering could go as low as 47%.

  • DOE

Kobe will take 50/50 split because he wants to play basketball above everything else what does that say about all the other players in the NBA

  • Nigel

Meh, he’s got 72 mil comin his way for the next 3 years. This doesn’t really affect him.

  • jayb

owners might think they have all the leverage but they are also out thinking themselves which they fail to realize..i am a die hard nba fan but truth be told i care about 6 teams and a handful of players. rest of the league is garbage and basically the d-league. i would love to see all these idiot owners try to do a tv deal without kobe, bron and wade in the fold..throw in drose and melo…you could not pay me to watch! owners are not coming off 50-50 if we want to play ball this year and in this lifetime..take the deal!

  • http://slamonline.com Big D

Little too late for 50/50 split. Sounds like some of these small market owners would not take that split anymore.

  • FL23

I”ll take the 50/50 but there are other issues that players must win such as the contract lenghts, rookies salaries etc. The reporting on BRI gets way too much attention.First, SI hasn’t even confrimed Kobe Bryant says he”ll take this split and second if he agrees no change to bball system

  • http://www.ImproveU-Co. Ben Cannon

Maybe we as well as NBA players should look at it this way… In an economy that’s yielding less and less employment do to fewer and fewer dollars being able to go towards the recreation of even attending a game during an 82 game season these days, just maybe the players should take it in the shorts, which by the way I’d like to take in the shorts the way they are… I think Jordan is taking the stand he’s taking because Jordan at one time was the 5th highest paid player on his team at one time… I think Jordan truly loved the sport of basketball the competitive spirit of knowing that he was unbeatable at his craft, and on any given night he could take your breath away… We have players with that much talent on the floor, but money has sort of blinded some players from the fact that a lot of us that go to the gyms during the week on or on weekends with our high medium and low skills play the game for the simple joy of exercise, and would play for what we make at work if we thought someone would actually come watch…

I’m not anyone’s side I’m a consumer of a game that I learned how to play after High School it replaced football which I didn’t think had the same art form as basketball. I thought baseball was way too slow and long wanna talk about being over-hyped and paid see MLB. But basketball is a brand I’ve backed since I first saw Magic pass, Bird shoot, Dr. J rise and MJ fly… I’m still in love with the game that gives you Kobe’s will/skill, Lebron’s brute athletics, Wade’s Flash, and Durant’s Splash… I don’t think I’d ever give up on the sport but the first timers that were captured last year might…

My only question to the players is do you really care about the sport and people that come to watch or is it that you you’re no better than the owners…, caring for dollars first and fans later???

  • rico

the players should take whatever the owners agree to. The players make to much money now. if they don’t like the offer leave he NBA and give up basketball and see what else they would be able to do.They do not need 5 -10 cars and a 10 bedroom 15 bath house.and they also would have to cut bak on their dope needs ( They are spoiled little babies )the owners are the ones who invested their money and took a big chance. They deserve more profits then the players.
and believe me, I love sports and the players, BUT THE HUGE SALARIES ARE GETTING OUT OF HAND. if the players take a salary cut , Maybe the owners can cut cost of admission to the games, and cost of concession stands items such as pop, beer and food. as it stands now majority of young kids, seniors and many working stiffs cannot afford to go basket ball games, but baseball football and Hockey also.
So players quit crying and thinking only of yourself and start playing> Really how much money does a person really need.
