Griffin, Irving, Rubio Highlight Rookie-Sophomore Game Rosters

The NBA announced the roster pool of rooks and sophomores for the All-Star ’12 Rising Stars Challenge. Check out the release below for a complete list of participants in the League’s first Team Chuck-Team Shaq game.

Reigning Rookie of the Year Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, and Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Ricky Rubio, who ranks third overall in assists, lead a list of 18 players selected for the 2012 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge to be held on Friday, Feb. 24, in Orlando during NBA All-Star 2012.

Joining Griffin from the Sophomore class are: DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Landry Fields (New York Knicks), Paul George (Indiana Pacers), Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz), Greg Monroe (Detroit Pistons), Tiago Splitter (San Antonio Spurs), Evan Turner (Philadelphia 76ers), and John Wall (Washington Wizards).

Irving and Rubio are joined by fellow first-year players MarShon Brooks (New Jersey Nets), Brandon Knight (Detroit Pistons), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio Spurs), Markieff Morris (Phoenix Suns), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland Cavaliers), Kemba Walker (Charlotte Bobcats), and Derrick Williams (Minnesota Timberwolves).

The participants in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge were selected by the NBA’s assistant coaches, with each team submitting one ballot.

The new concept should make this game pretty interesting. I literally forgot that Blake is technically a Sophomore though.

RICKY! I reckon this will be fun.

  • nbk Posted: Feb.8 at 3:07 pm
I feel like Charles is going to destroy Shaq if they are really picking the players for their teams playground style.

  • KHoliday Posted: Feb.8 at 3:14 pm
Why is Blake Griffin playing in this game??? If he’s an all star starter, this shouldnt be part of his all star weekend!

  • Fresh Boirdee Posted: Feb.8 at 3:16 pm
I feel that there are enough talented rookies this year to just make it a straight up Rookie game like how it used to be. I would like to see Jimmer, Kenneth Faried, Shumpert, Zeke, Norris Cole, on there. Landry Fields, Gordon Hayward, and Evan Turner… ain’t nobody checking for these guys.

  • nbk Posted: Feb.8 at 3:21 pm
They switched the format because the rookies get stomped the vast majority of the time. And because although people like some rookies, they are pretty terrible overall. Jimmer, Isiah, Faried have done nothing that would warrant any kind of positive attention at this point. Having a game that features them would be like lying to the public about how good they are.

last guy picked will be clowned forever.

  • Fresh Boirdee Posted: Feb.8 at 3:44 pm
@nbk… but that should be the point… these guys don’t get enough PT, this game should be a stage for them to showcase their skills. We’ve all seen the highlights of their summer games, they can ball, they’re just stuck on teams where they just have to wait their turn. I feel like Evan Turner and them dudes are in the rotations, they get their 20-30 a game. Let these young dudes get some shine, let’em eat. Cole and Shumpert have been steady if not impressive this season and they got no love. Markief Morris!?! I get it they need another big man, but come on! And Kawhi only getting burn because Ginobli is injured.

  • nbk Posted: Feb.8 at 3:54 pm
Showcase their talents? it’s the rookie/sophomore version of an All-Star game. You have to earn the right to play in it. And Markieff Morris has according to many, been better then Cole and Shumpert. He just hasn’t received any attention because he plays for Phoenix, not New York or Miami.

  • Red Posted: Feb.8 at 3:55 pm
I feel Omer Asik is a snub..

  • Max Posted: Feb.8 at 3:57 pm
    Markief is good.

  • LP Posted: Feb.8 at 3:57 pm
The fact that they don’t get enough PT means they shouldn’t be in the game. There’s like 40 rookies in the League, everybody can’t make it. ALL rookies selected have been productive somewhat…they’ve had decent rookie season…Shumpert shoulda made it, but its too many guards already…

  • Max Posted: Feb.8 at 4:05 pm
Oh, and Paul George for MVP!

  • Do Work Posted: Feb.8 at 4:11 pm
there are no rookie centers that got picked to play in the game…that’s sad

  • startown Posted: Feb.8 at 4:12 pm
    no jimmer?!

  • Max Posted: Feb.8 at 4:12 pm
    ^
That’s because the only decent center still plays oversea’s.

  • Jono Posted: Feb.8 at 4:14 pm
WHAT?! NO JEREMY LIN OR KENNETH FARIED?!?!

  • Fresh Boirdee Posted: Feb.8 at 4:34 pm
I personally feel like fans should be able to vote for who we want to see. I feel like because there has to be an even amount of rookies/sophomores depending on position certain guys are gonna get snubbed and certain rookies are gonna get in cause they fill a position. Why not use the best rookies first and use sophomores to fill in open spots?

  • BossTerry Posted: Feb.8 at 4:36 pm
Would be dope if Rubio pulled-off the JWill elbow pass….

  • TBEASTIN Posted: Feb.8 at 4:57 pm
    ^ i think he might!

  • Red Posted: Feb.8 at 5:20 pm
I like Faried but he hasn’t played or anything. Lin isn’t good enough. And no decent Centers? Omer Asik is more than decent.

  • LA Huey Posted: Feb.8 at 5:43 pm
Off-the-elbow-alley-oop to Blake. I think John Wall might break down in tears when he sees what it feels like to play without knucklehead teammates.

  • manu Posted: Feb.8 at 5:48 pm
    No Ivan the terrible?

  • LAgunero Fan Posted: Feb.8 at 6:01 pm
the rookies have no chance on the matchups in the paint at all. their biggest guy is maybe 6″9′ and thats a big maybe

  • TSmoove Posted: Feb.8 at 7:40 pm
    No Shump? smh

  • ai come back Posted: Feb.8 at 7:53 pm
lins good enougd but two games wont convince anybody

  • LaKid Posted: Feb.8 at 8:33 pm
$1000 dollars says Griffin goes first.

  • fernandogarcia Posted: Feb.8 at 8:52 pm
Norris Cole not making this game is ridiculous!

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.8 at 11:11 pm
Norris Cole hasn’t been THAT good. Relax people.

  • Will Lee Posted: Feb.8 at 11:17 pm
    what? No Klay Thompson?

  • Bt Posted: Feb.8 at 11:45 pm
Besides cole’s game against the celtics hes been retry poor. 8.2 points At 41% and 2.4 assists with 1.7 turnovers a game isn’t exactly that great

If i was Vinny Del Negro, i’d say BG isn’t allowed more than 4 minutes for this game.

  • Jk Posted: Feb.9 at 3:21 am
Shump needs to be in there!

  • mytiman Posted: Feb.9 at 4:20 am
Blake’s already a starter in the All Star game, he should be excused from this Rookie-Sophomore game. And, if I’m not mistaken, Marshon Brooks of the Nets suffered a broken foot. This should give Jeremy Lin, Kenneth Faried, Iman Shumpert and other rookie snubs a chance to enter the draft pool.

  • A l a n Posted: Feb.9 at 4:32 am
I hope BG will be in the same team as Rubio. The show would be guaranteed.

  • majic Posted: Feb.9 at 4:33 am
Boogie Cousins as 1st pick. Book it

  • MeloMan15 Posted: Feb.9 at 11:05 am
as much as I love the kid, Shumpert started off strong but has fizzled of late

  • mgrealdeas Posted: Feb.9 at 1:13 pm
