No. 1 Kentucky Drops No. 8 Florida By 20

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

After three straight wins by at least 20 points, No. 1 Kentucky was supposed to finally be tested against No. 8 Florida on Tuesday night. Instead it was more of the same as the Wildcats dropped the Gators, 78-58.

As usual, Kentucky’s contributions came from all over the place. Leading the team in scoring was sophomore guard Doron Lamb, who had 18 points for the second straight game. Helping out in all ways with 13 points and 13 rebounds was freshman forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

But the biggest impact continues to come from freshman forward Anthony Davis. His stats (16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks) are expected at this point, but the Chicago native’s defensive contribution cannot be understated. Davis makes it nearly impossible to get an uncontested shot off in the lane, one of the reasons why Florida shot just 34.9 percent from the field.

After the game, Davis was talking about a title.

From the Courier-Journal:

“We’re very capable of winning a national championship if we keep playing this way,” he said. “We have this little swagger.”

While Kentucky has been dominant, most of their notable wins have come at home. It will have an opportunity to change that with three of its final six games coming at Vanderbilt, at No. 20 Mississippi State and at Florida.

That was a great game. I have to admit that I was a little concerned when Kentucky was slow getting on the boards and Florida leading by as much as 6, but the Wildcats came back to prove to ANY doubters (i.e., those that don’t know college basketball) that THEY are the supreme choice for number one. Anthony Davis did what he does…it’s undescribable. No wonder he is up for a lot of the college superlatives. MKG continued to show off his versatility (one of the reasons why Kentucky is such a dangerous team). And Lamb, Teague, and Jones played great!!!

But Brad Beal played well too, so much so to the point that it seemed like Florida was TOTALLY dependent upon him at one point. Boynton started knocking down 3s but a little too late. To Florida’s credit, they did keep up with Kentucky for most of the first half. It’s kind of messed up because I’m a Gator fan too, but since I had to choose, I had to go with the team I’ve been down with since day one….BBN!!!!

    UK is on another level

UF has great players but the team is way too overloaded with shooters. And Young is the classic ripped but soft big. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.

Cats are legit. BBN! But Florida will play much better when they get the Cats at home. They won’t go 6-27 from 3 in the swamp. Florida just looks like they are built for pick-up games, not high-level competition.

can’t understand how nbadraftdotnet still has drummond at no 1. Davis seems like a lock right now. I heard during one game that at that point he had more blocks as an individual than something like 286 teams!!!!!!!

He should block shots like that! He got $250g’s to go to Kentucky

    Money well spent then.
