Kansas Knocks Off UNC to Make Final Four

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

Kansas was able to take advantage of a North Carolina squad that was without Kendall Marshall to win 80-67 and advance to the Final Four. This is the furthest Kansas has advanced since winning the national title in 2008.

Much was made of North Carolina’s starting five heading into the season, but it was the Jayhawks who had all their starters score in double figures on Sunday. Senior guard Tyshawn Taylor, who had struggled for much of the tournament, finished with a game-high 22 points. He had scored a total of 26 points in his previous three games.

North Carolina stayed with Kansas for most of the game but not having Marshall showed down the stretch for the Tar Heels. Stillman White, who started in place of Marshall, had just four points and missed two crucial shots late.

It was hard for head coach Roy Williams to come to terms with the loss.

From stltoday.com:

“There’s no way to put into words the way we feel,” Williams said. “There’s no way to put into words the way I feel. … It’s the NCAA tournament. One team wins and one team loses, and that’s what we have to understand.”

Kansas will now face Ohio State in the Final Four. The Jayhawks defeated the Buckeyes, 78-67, on Dec. 10, but Jared Sullinger did not play in the game.

Screw crybaby roy. What did the winning coach have to say? What did tyshawn and thomas say?

T-Rob is the Player of the Year!!!!!

Good win by Kansas. Barnes and Zeller couldn’t get it going. Henson was hurting, Kendall was missed, and Dexter/Leslie Mcdonald have been gone the same year. The better team won

  • riggs

Blame Zeller 100%, dude could not do anything to TRob and he was pretty much a liability.

  • logues

actually zeller got like 3 easy layups vs robinson… and ya its too bad unc had all those injuries this year, they had a ridiculously deep team

I’ve always stated that HBarnes’ overrated and this game among many others proves it. I don’t see how so many draft sites have him as the second pick behind ADavis, I much rather have TRob or MKG.

^100% agree, way overrated, not a really good handle, below avg athlete, basically a spot up shooter

TRob is a beast, can’t understand the hate for Taylor, sure he makes some mistakes (I’ve noticed he misses alot of clutch FT’s but does make big-time 3′s) but every time I watch this kid play he plays terrific. OSU-KU is going to be fun. TRob is basicly a much better version of Sullinger, stronger, better body, way more athletic, fast, nice touch around the rim decent defender, good rebounder, team leader.

Agree with JTaylor. To think me & my brother were trying to figure out who’s better between Barnes or Jeremy Lamb. Both fell way short.

This falls on Roy Williams and HArrison Barnes…6 minutes left, the game was maybe tied, ROY decides to put a small freshman in to finish the game (After Tyshawn Taylor has ~18 pts already) …This game was lost defensively more than anything.. TYshawn Taylor had 26 the whole tournament and explodes for 22+ on this kid…Crazy. Fire Roy.

Barnes = Felipe Lopez. Hyped beyond abilities.

  • bike

Several draft boards have Barnes going # 2 and I can’t see it. He has not improved at all from last year. Way overrated.

  • logues

maybe im bias cuz im a unc fan but i think barnes will be a good nba player.. his offensive game seems nba ready, he just seems like he has a mature game, esp with the post up ability.. but who knows if it will transition the L

The only problem with Barnes is that he doesn’t play up to his abilities he is to passive needs to force the issue more but I think he will be a great NBA player I believe the hype was too much which isn’t his fault who can blame him for bad scouting reports and over hype.

  • GC6

I think he will be a candidate for Rookie of the year smooth jump shot, good post up game, good all around player more athletic then people might believe. His down sides he has no aggression watched the game and when he was aggressive for a handful of possessions he looked like a man amongst boys but then he faded away but I have him for rookie of the year if he looks for his offence.
